  • Ever imagined a plant that grows two vegetables at the same time? This is now a reality thanks to a scientist and his team at the Indian Institute of Vegetable Research. Meet 52-year-old Dr. Anand Bahadur from Uttar Pradesh who has created a plant that bears both Brinjals and Tomatoes. Dr. Bahadur was tasked in 2011 with finding a solution to growing tomatoes during monsoons. After several trials and errors, he found the solution by grafting a tomato stem onto a brinjal plant. Aptly named ‘Brimato’, this hybrid plant can be harvested 5 to 6 times a year and yields 2.5 kg of brinjal and 2 kg of tomato each time! He next aims to create another version of this by growing brinjal, tomato and chilly from the same plant. #India #plants #tomato #farming #vegetables

Amazing, it's nice to see what our country condition was after Independence and now we have the best scientist and horticulturist where our country is becoming self sufficient in terms of food and also exporting.. 🙏❤

If you graft potato root stock you can grow Potato also on the same plant. This works because all these plants belong to the same plant family (Solanaceae). Other plants like Cape Gooseberry, Capsicum, Chilli etc can also be grafted on the same the plant. 🙂 Each plant has be created individually so will be effort intensive to do on a large scale and since these are annuals, each year farmers will have to buy new grafted plants from the scientists to get next year's crop.

Exactly the thing i was thinking about. It's not something out of the fiction but more like fun project rather than making it fully scalable farming practice. The grafting can be useful if plants are prune to certain diseases so we can use the stock of other plants which are resilient to them. The grafting method is expensive and doesn't add much of the advantage because the plant can only distribute limited amount of energy to the fruit so if we add bringal and tomato for example the fruiting capacity of plants is going to reduce.

This is alredy done in our native village.. at least 4-5 years ago., When tomato rate crashed, that time around people started doing this . Also there are also potato plants which were grafted with tomato stems, but later it was found out that it saps arsenic into tomato as well. So it was prohibited for farming. Only brimato is going on.. and for potato-tomato hybrid , agriculture University 8s conducting Rnd. So that they can give some solution.!

Hah what's new about this? I have been doing grafting since I was in 11th standard. I'm doing MSc Botany now. It's the most basic thing. It would be OMG when we could produce a plant without grafting and through genetic engineering and have the same result. Anyway good work. The video teach people about plants and it's good thing for a plant lover like me. Because grafting is my hobby and I have so many grafted plants at home...
