They all sound great but that Benetton opening up onto the straight at 1:25 is unreal, you can feel it through the sound in this video, tearing up the track. The old circuits were so much better for the spectacle then, Brands, Old Osterreichring, Kalyana, Paul Ricard etc. San Marino too. It was a great time in the sport

This was the turbo charged era of F1 in the 1980's and those engines roared in such anger. And it was just explosive ear shattering during gear changes when they let the clutch out! I went twelve times to the Montreal GP and I'm from there lucky me!

1:46 IIRC, even the Tyrrell team, who were the only team consistently running the Ford Cosworth 3.5 liter normally aspirated V8's during the majority of the Turbo era, were forced to switch to the 1.5 liter Renault turbo V6 during the second half of the 1985 season because the FIA banned normally aspirated engines for the 1986 season which also goes back to the fallout created after the 1984 United States Grand Prix at Detroit when Tyrrell were disqualified and subsequently excluded from the '84 World Championship. They would return to running their traditional Cosworth V8's in 1987.

at that time (1986) you looked out onto the circuit and entered the Jurassic, you listened to the T rex screaming and shaking the earth, power dominated and only the driver could manage everything. Now you look at a grand prix and it feels like you're in a big amusement park for children, all controlled by electronics, no soul. no sensations, just rules, like our current life (2023)

The 1000+ bhp was for qualifying set up only for the race it was more like 800 bhp and don't forget the V10 engines in the early 00's where generating 950bhp naturally aspirated and tuned upto 20,000rpm so they where arguably more powerful in the truest sense as they weren't relying on turbo injections. I agree though the golden age of Formula One was from about the early 80's through till the early / mid 90's before the technology began to takeover too much with driver aids and grooved tyres etc... The best sounding era was definitely the early 90's even if not necessarily the loudest (that would be the early 00's), but in the 90's you had a wonderful variation of different engine tones with V8's, V10's and even the odd V12 all racing together. Once they started running engine regulations on the number of cylinders and capacity etc... it became alot harder to distinguish one engine from another and the cars lost alot of their charm and character, this was even more the case after 2008 when they introduced Rev limiters and made the comparatively small and less powerful V8 spec engines sound even more flat then they did around 2006 / 7.
