Tom must've been internally giggling the whole time thinking back to his own Zamboni experience 😆
I too was wondering about how they can cover the Zamboni without mentioning when Tom get to play on one - czcams.com/video/Q1YXekapPdA/video.html
I listened to the question and was like "Well, you drove a Zamboni, didn't you, Tom?"
It's probably why Tom was the one asking the question. He would have mentioned that first thing.
“Are they wearing a costume?”
“No”
SO THEY’RE NAKED
Niiiiiice on iiiiiice. :)

Sabrina with the Gritty reference and then the most epic follow up was absolutely superb.
As they say in comedy, "explanation is the soul of wit".
Good fun
I just woke up and my first thought from hearing the question was "The man's name was Thomas Skate, maker of the skate."
No idea where I got that from but it's most definitely not correct.
Okay I just finished watching it and I came scary close
Of course not! The guy who made the skate was Bauer McKnifefeet!
@@SirExal Common misconception, but Bauer McKnifefeet only made an approximation of the bone skates that the Finns had been using. All signs point to the original inventor being a Teemu Jalkabladenen.
Probably thinking of Thomas TomSka Ridgewell. The ASDF movie guy
I figured it was the inventor of the Zamboni, but only when Tom said that "you know his name" did I think, "Wait, was the Zamboni invented by a guy named Zamboni?!"
The alternative would be that someone _not_ called "Zamboni" would randomly decide to call it "Zamboni".
2:09 the most ambigious silence ever on latteral
Sabrina is up there with the greatest guests on Lateral.
I love when people with the least amount of knowledge about a topic get the answer
I consume hockey.
You monster.
What a Gen Z thing to say lol
1:39
I do not.
Hockey Monster goes nomnomnom
Did not expect to see a Columbus Blue Jackets player represent Hockey
"It's all Ohio"
"It always was" *click*
As a Columbus native, I’m so taking this. This and our sweep of the Tampa Bay Lightning are basically all we can claim.
It’s rough to see the Jackets season end tonight. I’ve been existing on half-off large pizzas since October thanks to them and their official pizza partnership.
@@danielpratt237 Maybe we'll actually win the draft lottery this time? (In denial)
I was even more surprised that it was Johnny Gaudreau. As someone who knows a lot of Flames fans, I'm kind of tired of hearing about people's feelings about that guy.
I'm guessing that they just looked up "american hockey player" and figured a Toronto Maple Leaf player wouldn't fit the thumbnail theme.
Zamboni driver that high fives the crowd and does "donuts, donuts, donuts"
Edit: After several years, administration found out and fired him. He was the best!
This was a great clip! Funny he must have wanted smooth milk too.
Yeah, mold grows on unsafe milk, which would make the surface lumpy (as well as the interior ;) ) so by pasteurizing...
Me seeing the Columbus Blue Jackets in a Tom Scott thumbnail was NOT on my Bingo card for today
And don't forget the episode of Technical Difficulties where Tom fulfills a childhood dream of driving a Zamboni! And the Tokyo drift anime techno remix.
I just wanna say, I absolutely love the Answer in Progress crew and the energy they bring to the podcast, and I'm so glad this podcast introduced me to their channel.
This might be my FAVORITE one!
being from columbus i can respect a blue jackets player! awesome seeing the CBJ on a tom scott video!
Kind of like how the guy that wrote "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" never actually went to a baseball game
It was a desperate plea, and nobody answered!
I think Sabrina is my favourite lateral guest.
My first guess was an engineer/metal smith/manufacturer who came up with some new innovation for ice skates. But when Taha said "manufacturer" half way through, I thought of Zamboni.
He lived in Paramount, CA, not too far from where I grew up, and his family also owned an ice rink there. I think Huell Howser (a southern CA TV icon of sorts) did an episode on the Zamboni company once. I know I've for sure seen them featured on something. I looked up the ice rink, it still exists but is now affiliated/branded with the LA Kings.
He seems an obvious selection for all 3 Halls of Fame, all 3 sports certainly depend on his invention.
"Ew." "It's wonderful."
Yep, that's Gritty.
My first thought had been that Wayne Gretzky might have made a significant financial contribution to the other sports or something, because honestly, if you are asked a question about someone making a monumental accolade that includes ice hockey in any way, 90% of the time it's Gretzky.
The inspiration was, in fact, when he gleefully imagined crushing ice skaters under a giant cartoon steamroller.
I remember when Tom drove one, but he didn't get to do donuts. 😀
I got this one right away.
This was a fun short one
Sometimes I sincerely have to turn captions on just because I know how seriously Tom and his team take them, and I need to see how certain things were transcribed. Was not at all disappointed to do this for "knifefeet" before Tom confirmed it. 😂
I love Sabrina so much for that Gritty reference!
Entirely beside the point, but I couldn't help noticing a linguistic curiosity where Tom mirrored Sabrina's pronunciation of "Gritty" the first time around and then as he talked just a bit more, he normalized into his own accent and said it with a "t" very shortly after. I thought I was weird for doing this sometimes (the other way around) so it's cool to spot this in the wild
Noticed this too, very interesting catch
The invention of the ice-rink resurfacer was serendipitous, as he was trying to invent a machine to fix climate change.
My first thought was the guy who invented the Zamboni
They just don't name enough things after their inventors these days. It'd be much simpler to figure out the etymology of things if they did!
Second time I had the answer before Tom was done with the question. Haha!~
These sports are so related, yet so different, that it must be somebody who made some technical contribution to all of them. E.g. somebody who made some invention/improvement related to the skates or the ice.
Thomas Midgley Junior for his work in refrigeration?
Or Zamboni?
Correct me if I'm wrong, Wayne Gretzky was Canadian, right?
I was thinking it was Airbud
Initial thoughts: someone on ice skates doing a trick, failing to do a trick, having an accident, crashing, something like that. They were going so fast (speed), flipped and spun all around (figure), and hit the boards full force or ended up in the goal (hockey). Basically, they wiped out big time with style.
It probably dates me pop culture-wise that my first joke response was Bo Jackson.
[Potential spoilers]
Gritty reminds me more of a subdued Animal instead of Cookie Monster (now that I spent the time to look this up).
I feel like Gritty is what happens when Cookie Monster grows up, and moves from sugar to caffiene...
Tom: [pulls a face] "They've *made a contribution*, " ...
Were they the *only contestant* ?
Tom knows a lot about Zambonis...
tom didn’t even mention he was on one before
Immidiate guess was some actor that played roles in those fields.
"Bauer Knifefeet" excellent reference to Steve Dangle
The only reason most of us here know what a Zamboni is is cos we watched Tom drive one.
Sabrina, I was RIGHT WITH YOU on Gretzky and Gritty. (My other guess was "toe pick!"-- (the actor from the movie Cutting Edge, although that would only cover 2 of the 3 categories.)
In my version of reality, Baur McKnifefeet is the correct answer... and also became a supervillain immediately after his induction.
Wayne Gretzky is Canadian 🇨🇦
Oh wow! I'm going to go read up on this guy. Find out if his other accomplishments are as influential as this one. (Worded carefully to avoid spoilers)
another funny thing named after the inventor is the spatula
Bit like Leo Fender who didn't play guitar but did all those improvements of which most where good ideas, most.
Taha doesn't watch Tech Diff. I'm not angry just disappointed
i thought for sure it was gonna be airbud
Before actually watching the video, I was wondering if this was about a small number of hockey players who were also accomplished gridiron football, rugby, lacrosse, baseball, rowing, skating, boxing athletes, and have several championships and in induction in a few halls of fame.
Then I quickly realized that most of those guys are pretty obscure to any non-sports history fan and pretty much stopped being a thing after the 1950's. And are not Americans.
Mr. Zamboni was an inventor, and a more successful one than Thomas Midgley Jr., who put lead in gasoline, and then CFCs in refrigerators.
I was guessing someone involved in developing the tech for artificially making ice for ice rinks. Totally overlooked the actual answer.
to be fair, you were on the right track!
Spoiler:
I'm shocked that a Canadian didn't know what a Zamboni was
That was dangerous to drink something while the others are trying to find an answer. Could have made a nice fountain. 😁
As a rec-league hockey player who drove a Zamboni three days ago, somehow I still didn't get this one and I'm ashamed.
(I just did a loop around the rink for fun with the actual driver's supervision, it's an annual event here)
Also I'm definitely going to use "Bauer McKnifeface"
Mr Zambonis sports related equipment was so fast it was past your eyes before you realised it .
Apologies for milking that one, I'll grab my coat & leave.
And Pilates was made by Joseph Pilates.
What's a zamboni with you?
...
Dang, I was thinking it was similar to how the Simpsons are in the baseball Hall of Fame.
Mr. Zamboni?
Was it one person, or three people with the same name?
You've heard of Edward Scissorhands now get ready for Mr Bower McKnifefeet
A coach?
Person invented zamboni
Did Tom forget about driving a Zamboni? He normally comments when a question has the same subject as one of his videos.
I think it'd be a bit hard to comment on the question when you're the one asking the question though, in this format, especially when said comment would spoil the answer.
Like maybe after the answer was revealed, but I think he just didn't think about it within that moment.
I was kinda hoping Tom would mention a related anecdote, but it didn't work out that way! -- David
The only reason I know what a Zamboni is is Plants vs. Zombies.
The only reason I know is that I've watched Tom drive one.
@@qwertyTRiG Neither of you have seen Deadpool???

@@aloysiuskurnia7643 Can you make an ice rink out of milk?

"Must be smooth...must be smooooooooth..."
Tom's theme song: czcams.com/video/vVkJbvv3pHg/video.html
This was played every time the Zamboni came out on the ice between periods during hockey games at my college.
seeing both of them together feels like a marvel avengers moment for some reason lol
Turns out none of the guests are Tom Scott fans... :'(
Are we not all wearing costumes?
My hope was that it'd be Will Ferrell for starring in Blades of Glory
Are you telling me that wasn't a documentary?
Mr. Bower McKnifefeet, white courtesy telephone, please.
A disappointing lack of support for Tom's "Not much, what's a Zamboni with you?" in the comments
Wilt Chamberlain got the basketball and volleyball hall of fame so people have done two sports before
With this video I finally understood the name of Zomboni from PvZ. As a non-native English speaker it just never came to me that the vehicle he rides is what he was named after.
also gretsky is canadian
Yes. Also, Gretzky.
My first guess was Gretsky too, him being Canadian being the ironic part.
@@daerdevvyl4314 didnt realise its spelt that way i dont follow ice hockey
@@melissareohorn7436 I grew up in the same town as him and the street that I lived on was renamed after him, yet I still have a hard time spelling the name correctly.
My guess (currently at 2:42) is Zamboni.
you did it!
I got it as soon as the question was asked.
I got it before the question ever appeared on screen!
It was one-legged Joe.
