I'll Follow the Sun is particular favourite of mine. They had so little time making these records and near the end of the sessions they had run out of songs. So John suggests that finish off a song Paul had started when he was a teenager. You can tell Paul had the ear for a tune and a phrase at an incredibly young age.

I'll Follow The Sun demonstrates so many strengths of the band. Melody. Harmonies. Simple tasteful percussion and guitar solo. Lovely vocal timbre. Gosh, really nothing can be criticized about this, nothing could be changed to make it better.

I always wanted John to sing a descending line on the words "And now the" [time has has come] etc. The notes in C, would C,B, Bb....[and the words "And though I...."] but that's just me being a musician lol

It's stumbling across songs like "I'll Follow the Sun" that makes working through the Beatless catalogue so endlessly surprising, rewarding and joyous. There are plenty of weak songs on these first four albums, but the countless gems you come across make it all worthwhile. Above all though, they set the scene for what's to come next. You've paid your dues. You won't believe the quality of the music you're about to come to.

Paul's voice sounds gorgeous on first song, and then the harmonies match perfectly well together. Great song!!
On Mr Moonlight I knew what your reaction would be at the beginning, that note was great, and the stunning harmonies are amazing, and to be honest I don't really think there is such a thing as 'a worst' Beatles song, less catchy or interesting maybe but all have something to bring out.

I agree with you to a point about Paul’s “prettier” voice, but I must admit I love a good old Macca scream. (Oh! Darling comes to mind) The Beatles 1994 documentary had some outtakes of John trying to get the beginning phrase of “Mr Moonlight” just right. You are so right, that was a tricky bit. It was very funny. It’s a great song and I love what they did with it. I am continuing to love this journey you are taking with us. Great input Luke. 🌺✌️

On Mr. Moonlight John's vocals makes so real, so believable, impassioned. Brought the song up to higher level or performance making it more worth listening to. This song was from their repertoire in the nightclub days in Hamburg, Germany and Liverpool.

"I'll Follow the Sun" is classic mid-period Beatles. I feel like Paul's almost trying too hard to write something commercial, and it's the sort of thing that would inspire legions of TV commercial ditties. IMO "Mr. Moonlight" is John in "F-you" mode. I have a feeling he honestly loved the vocal with that big a cappella opening (which took a few tries based on the studio outtakes.) But's it's almost as if he chose a song that he knew would get a rise out of people. In some ways it's also a throwback to the more exaggerated songs from the Beatle's early days, like "Besame Mucho" and "Three Cool Cats." I'd never considered its connections to African or Caribbean music but that's not off the mark.

Fun reaction as always man. And I forgot how much I liked that second song. I forgot there was even a good studio recording of it. If I remember correctly, that was one of the songs that they were doing at least a few years earlier when they were playing in Hamburg I think. I've heard the super low fidelity bootleg of some of that early live stuff, and I would say they were still going by the band name of the Silver Beatles, and somewhere in there was also when they also nabbed Ringo from some other popular band like Gerry Hart and the Pacemakers. But I'm pretty sure I remember hearing this on those bootleg tapes.
Along with another popular cover at the time, Besame Mucho, which in Spanish means kiss me a whole lot, laugh.

These are not two of my favorites, especially in this point of their careers. However, this is not to say that I dislike them. I do like these songs, and I think that your take on them is very good.
One thing that you say at the beginning of this reaction is that you are trying to do all the albums and singles of the Beatles. One song that I think you may have missed is "This Boy" which is before Hard Days Night. It's a single that was on the second side of I Want to Hold Your Hand. I would appreciate if you can do a reaction to that song. Thank You.

I am a first generation fan and must have heard every song over 50 times and I never thing that hard about the ins and outs of the music as such. but I do enjoy when you give your analysis. You are right about Mr. Moonlight. Many of panned it but I always loved it but I thought they could have done better with the middle organ part, and I never criticize them. "Mr. Moonlight" is one of my lower tier Beatles tracks.. John's vocal performance is great for sure, but there's just something about the song itself that doesn't quite grab me .. However, it's definitely not what I would call a bad song .. I don't think The Beatles knew how to make one of those ! 😉
