To put into perspective just how OP the Smart Pistol is in Titanfall 2, the lore of the game says that it cannot be mass manufactured because of how bonkers expensive it is. During the home stretch of the campaign, you're literally firing BILLIONS of dollars worth of shots.

Honestly, in so many games with optional stealth mechanics or melee insta-kills the starter knife (or equivalent thereof) is ludicrously powerful. Like in Far Cry 3 it’s fairly easy to chain melee kills and get rid of loads of enemies without ever needing to pull out a gun. It helps that melee kill animations usually give you invincibility frames.

Not a weapon, but the best starting armor in a video game was the Stalker Suit from S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. You could find it in the starting area of the Cordon, but you had to know where to look. It was tucked away in an attic but the only way to access it was to make a rather hard jump from the roof of one building to another. Then, once you’re on the second roof, you have to go to the other side, find where part of the roof is missing, then crouch down right on the edge of the roof, and break the crate hidden there concealing the Stalker Suit. This armor was so good to have at the start of the game in fact, that the developers actually replaced it with the far less good (but better than nearly any other armor at the start of the game) Merc Suit in an early patch of the game.

    • @satannstuff

It's alt ability was a shield with about 100% block and the components to level it up are easy to get. The pistol you get at the start of The Last of Us Part II is great for the same reasons the silverballer is: You can use silencers, and it kills quickly if you land a good shot. It also helps in shooting legs out for easy kills with how much ammo they have

@@thatguyinthecorner4648 sharpness isn't everything though, a fire axe having more weight and momentum could have the dullest blade in the world and still cause more dmg than a knife. Try swinging the sharpest knife at a tree, then try swinging a dull axe at a tree, what does more dmg. A mace is duller than both and I would rather have a mace in combat than a knife cause smashing bones and skulls is a very effective way to maim and kill people.

I think the thing with weapons in Bloodborne is that each weapon offers something unique, like a different swing or reach or damage type. So there are very few (if any?) examples of a weapon just being a straight upgrade - they're pretty much all viable. The thing that's a pain is if you want to play with a particular weapon for its unqiue moveset but you can't get it until late in the game.

Seriously, the E-11 Blaster Rifle from Star Wars Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight is absolutely brilliant. You don't start-start with it, but you get it from your second enemy, and it's your best friend from then on. You'll get Thermal Detonators but they're not great in a pitched battle, you'll get the crossbow which is finicky and the repeater whose damage output is fine but uses a ton of ammo. And there's a lot of slow and/or explosive weaponry which are situational. The Lightsaber should be your best friend but they hadn't got the lightsaber combat down yet, so really you're just tanking a bunch of shots to do what a gun could do from a distance. They're just useful against dark jedi. Give me an E-11 Blaster Rifle (aka Stormtrooper Rifle) and I'll take care of 95% of enemies in the game, the missile launcher and lightsaber are just for the walkers and dark jedi.

The first one I think of for this is Dragon's Dogma. Sort of. Stat-wise, the Rusted Weapons you start with are, and always will be, terrible. However, if you manage to scrape together the materials to upgrade them, or better yet kill a dragon and get them Dragonforged, then they become incredible support weapons as some of the only weapons in the game to innately apply Torpor to enemies, significantly slowing down even gigantic monsters, as well as poisoning them leaving them open for a righteous pummelling from your hardest hitting teammates.
You can also put these upgraded rusted weapons in the hands of your pawn to allow them to take the supporting role instead. So while they're not powerful by themselves, they can make everything else so much stronger and easily earn themselves a place in even the game's hardest content.

For starters, it shoots 8 mini nukes at once and with mini nukes being rather limited in Fallout 3, it means you're going to be going through your limited ammo for it rather quickly. Not to mention most enemies in the game can be defeated with 1-2 mini nuke hits so you're really just beyond overkill with it. You will then be shot dead if things go even slightly wrong, true. But when it goes *right*...

The plasma cutter is my favorite weapon to use in the Dead Space series, it does good damage, it has decent reload speed and excellent ammo capacity and in the second game when it's fully upgraded, it lights enemies on fire.

Honestly in every dead space game ( well maybe not 3 haven't played ) the plasma cutter can literally carry you though the whole game there's a reason it's a category in speedruns

A huge part of the Saw Cleaver's appeal is how wildly powerful the transform attack (R1>L1) was and how much stagger it built too, meaning it was literally one of the most optimised weapons, farming for a special one from Rune Dungeons was a lot of fun!

The tether from the Just Cause series. It's not quite a weapon, but you know it's destructive potential with the grapnel's total defiance of physics!

You forgot to mention the plasma cutter from Dead Space. Most of the game could be completed with that weapon only. Only a few specific combat scenes required a different specialized weapon.

It probably doesn't count on this list but to throw my own recommendation, the Grenade Launchers from MW2009. My goodness were those things broken beyond belief. If you know, you know.

Jane's training has worked brilliantly. Ellen's adorable little smirk when she sedates Luke was sublime. She's really embracing her inner chaos.

Saw Cleaver is the best all around weapon in Bloodborne, really. I used a handful of weapons, but I always would default back to the saw cleaver. Lady Maria was the boss who made me switch to the threaded cane for better parries (she also taught me to parry, lol). I used the threaded cane for the Orphan's first phase, but I immediately switched back to the saw cleaver (untransformed) for phase 2 and it was brilliant. Tonitrus is one of my favorite non-starting weapons, because that free bolt damage is sweet and it's what helped me killed Amydala.
I love seeing just how far Luke is in his NG+ run of Bloodborne.
I guess it's because of when I started the Hitman games, but I usually pick the Black Lily for whatever reason. Not that I ended up using whatever silenced pistol I pick. I usually end up having to ditch it to get frisked or I end up using a screwdriver or scissors or something instead. It's mainly my shoot the cameras and the security equipment tool at this point.

Technically, the nail from Hollow Knight. Even though it's the only weapon you can get, it eventually becomes the strongest weapon in Hallownest.

What about the deku club from ocarina of time? A glitched version of the deku stick that you can technically get before your first sword, it does at least as much damage as the master sword, and doesn't require you to complete the longest fetch quest in the game

Siphon Filter. The taser, there was something satisfying watching the enemy twitch out then catch fire. Lol

Not sure if you've already done it, but in Morrowind you could get an end game Daedric weapon within 10 minutes of starting by doing an unmarked quest. No combat involved, just finding a mine outside Balmora and reporting its location to someone in Vivec, who gives you a Daedric weapon of your choice. The game never informs you about any of it, so most people miss it. First thing I do every time I boot up the game.

The revolver from ultrakill not only packs a nice punch, but with coins, it is arguably the best one in the game.

If we're talking tranquilisers, it's hard to go past the crossbow from Deus Ex. It's silent (in a game that rewards stealth), non-lethal (in a game that often punishes killing), and can take down a basic enemy in one or two shots. Also, your brother praises you for asking for it, and obviously we're all looking for that kind of approval!

Noted, but the GEP Gun from Paul Denton is still the better choice, especially since the wrist Crossbow can be acquired later on in the Liberty Island level.
