    Absolutely great take on the MacBook Air. I've been using the base M2 Air since release day and this thing handles everything I throw at it without a problem. The heaviest tasks I do weekly are with Photoshop and audio editing. I have done a few small video edits as well. The Air breezes through it all. It's a great machine for most people.

    I live in Asia and the recent heatwave here has highlighted one of the biggest issues with the MacBook Air. Mine kept overheating meaning I was getting the spinning beach ball. It was the first time I had ever experienced instability with the machine and it lasted all week. I think the lack of cooling is not a problem if you live in temperate regions but in this part of the world, it made the machine unreliable. Of course this won't be the norm for many people but in hot climate the MacBook Pro is a much better option. I had the same issue with my iPad Pro and so these chips do run hotter than people realise. Laptops really do need fans simply to prolong their lifespan if for nothing else.

      @@lelin4732 my wife's iPad mini 6 is terrible for this. It runs so hot and the battery gets decimated. She cannot use it at all while it's charging. Seems ridiculous right? I think there must be faulty batches of these products.

      It's very interesting that you mention that as it's something that's been on my mind, I visit Asia quite a bit and I'm thinking that active cooling in the machine may be a requirement for me so I'll likely need to go with the Pro option. I know at the moment the temperature in some parts of Thailand are over 40C

      @@ANomadOverseasthe other issue I have is that I have a portable 16-inch 4K external display connected to the MacBook Air as I work as I produce a lot of digital training resources for my business (this is set up in portrait format). This requires extra power input and so I need to work with the power cable connected. This also taxes the MacBook Air M3 and it seems to generate a lot more heat which it is not easily able to dissipate. This clearly has issues for the battery but I also get slow down especially when switching between apps. Hence the spinning beach ball... a daily occurrence. By comparison, my girlfriend uses the slightly older MacBook Pro 13 M2 and she has none of these issues whatsoever. A lot of the Apple snobs and CZcams gurus slate her MacBook (the touch bar model) because it is of the older style. But I will tell you this, it is a far, far better machine for those people needing to do creative work throughout the day, for many hours, regardless of climate and the environment. Simply because it has active cooling. I think you have to take a lot of these CZcams reviews with a pinch of salt because most of these people sit in there air conditioned American apartments playing around with basic apps, doing low intensity work. I think that if you rely on hardware to make money or to run a business, you need to have active cooling. I have reverted back to my Thinkbook Carbon X1 because the MacBook Air M3 simply is not up to the job. It is probably fine for students but not for doing serious work over prolonged periods. Do yourself a favour and buy the MacBook Pro whether the old M2 model on discount or one of the expensive new models. The older MacBook Pro 13 M2 model is much lighter and more portable than the new ones. Or go for a quality windows laptop like a ThinkPad X1 Carbon or similar. Also if you have an external display connected to the MacBook Air, the 8 GB of memory is not enough whatsoever because video memory is required to drive an external display, especially a 4K one. I swear this makes mine panic far too often. I'm going to be selling this MacBook Air M3 as soon as possible.

      @@theflyingscott1 I'm primarily a Windows user, this would be my first Mac that I'd purchase, have used them previously in different jobs and I do like them, just generally don't like the insane premium that Apple tends to apply. That being said, a lot of the systems I use for work now are cloud based so compatibility shouldn't be an issue. When I'm based in Asia then cooling will be a factor for sure. If was doing video editing then it wouldn't be a massive amount, but I think I'd be happy enough to fork out the extra for the pro 14 model as I'd expect to get a few years out of it.
      When travelling, I'm using a gaming laptop that's a few years old, it was insanely powerful at the time but is showing its age now, including charger it weighs almost 3kg which is almost half of your carry on luggage allowance lol! Oh, and it has a battery life of about 3 or 4 hours :D

    the MacBook M3 Air 16GB/512GB (€1,760) or the MacBook M3 Pro 8GB/512GB (€1,850). I would mainly use it to edit photos on photoschop. the better screen quality and SD card slot on the PRO model is a big advantage for me. Or am I better off with the Air M3 16GB/512GB because it has more RAM? I use a Nikon D750 and shoot an average of 500 photos per year. So not a heavy user I guess? My current laptop is an Acer nitro 5 (8GB/512GB) from 2019, but not really optimal

      Look at your Activity Monitor: available physical memory will be memory used minus cached files. For example, mine is currently 6.8GB minus 1.14GB meaning I still have 2.3GB of physical RAM available. Yet I have all my apps and tabs open, so 8GB is more than enough for me. I am using 2.3GB of swap (resting compressed cache). You will only need more than 8GB if you use RAM-intensive apps on a regular basis, like video editing.

    Is there actually a person who is buying a 999usd laptop, but can't afford to spend a hunderd more? 100usd is certainly not nothing, but considering the longetivity of a laptop it almost is. If 100usd is a problem for you, you shouldn't be spending 1k on a laptop nowadays.

      @andyH_England Před 29 dny

      I agree. Most people keep their laptops for 5-7 years so investing an extra $100 over that period seems a no-brainer especially as the benefits of the M3 over the M2 are significant. I would never recommend buying the M2 for $100 less. Obviously, if a better deal comes up, say secondhand M2, then that may be worth revisiting.
