This could have been saved if they had simply wrote Wanda to ask if he had kids, and when he says yes she tells him "Then go, run to them" and had him leave or make Wanda banish him to somewhere else. I think him leaving willingly would have been the ultimate characterization as it would have shown something other than hubris from him and that he loves his family above all else, while also leaving fans to think "He would have definitely been planning something"
