  • The speaker is Hendrik (Rick) Hertzberg. He has been a long time journalist/writer for The New Yorker and the New Republic. He was also the speechwriter for Jimmy Carter. Whether or not you agree with his point of view, I feel that he is a wonderful storyteller with a unique way of presenting his experiences. This interview was conducted in 1989. #hertzberg #1950s #1960s #liberal #newyorker

      Liberalism today is so miscued by the left and the right it’s actually insane .. all real liberalism ever really was supposed to be was a form a rationality .. I lean to the left but goddamn do I hate communism .. not to say I wouldn’t be in favor of Medicare and government aid but this idea that just because the right hate communism the left love it is so horrendously stupid that it boggles my mind how this reality even exist .. propaganda from all sides is winning and it’s pathetic .

      I'm Far left Liberal I see the feminist as center right and the republican party as far right.
      Also I hate how people in the middle right say the left & right are the same using horseshoe theory. It would only apply to the center and the right yet I'm here on the far left 100 miles from the center looking at how Washington D.C. and Lamestream Media only show center right & far right politics

    • @johncalvinhall
      @johncalvinhall Před 2 lety +1

      @@Multi1163 I understand what you're saying, and believe you when viewing others who are different. When you turn to the "right" and see feminists, they are to the "right" and Republicans and further "right" so they must be far-right . From MY perspective though, most Republicans are centrist with feminists to the left. But to the right of my stance are neo-nazis, and those who are intolerant of differing views. These would be far-right. Most Republicans are centrists. You can tell this by going to a Trump rally. I personally know several who are left of my personal politics, who've attended these rallies and were amazed by how welcome they were by most others. Sure, there are a few who are fearful of the left, but on the majority, Republicans are more centristic.

      I'm a liberal. My parents are strong Democrats and they go to church every Sunday. We see no conflict. I am not a god damn communist and I do not support Marxism or Communism, nor do I want it in my country. I want to help the poor, I want to tax the ultra rich to create some basic programs that I believe people deserve: tuition free/or cheap PUBLIC university education, and affordable healthcare for all.

    When you listen to libertarians it's as if you listen to Marxists. To help the poor is socialist. To be feminist is socialist. To think there are higher things then money is socialist.
    It's like yeah are you running a argumentation for socialism or againt there?
    The right needs to starkly work out the difference between social aid as part of a societiy, civic obligation and socialism.

    David, you’re a brave man, or well-entertained, or both, for posting this one. Thanks for it.
    I’m always amazed at how your commenters don’t understand or willfully misunderstand what the terms communist, socialist, liberal, conservative, and alt-right, actually mean. The dumbing down of the average American is real and painful. My brother for example is a Trotskyite i.e. a type of communist, and would have most liberals shot or guillotined, while self-styled social democrats like Bernie or AOC would merely be sent to labor camps for re-education. Liberals are a core problem to a ‘real’ socialist, and disgusting, while anyone who thinks themself ‘conservative’ is just a type of liberal. The Scots economist Adam Smith would likely be a liberal or a democratic socialist today for example - if you know anything about Smith and Hume. Americans need to have better education systems. I view the situation as hopeless and the American Republic about to melt into its Empire phase - maybe three generations? - before a bloody end. Curious if you think I’m overly pessimistic.

      I am concerned as well. I believe in the rule of law and hope that it will see its way to lead us back to a semblance of partisanship that can communicate across the walls that now divide us. The terms that so many seem to misunderstand even though my interview subjects I believe present them clearly, seem to be a desire to just further the divide between them and us or us and them. A bit scary. I am watching with hope, I always have hope, and faith in the younger leaders to find a way back to an America where we can talk to one another again. In my own little way, I'm hoping that the clips on my channel aid in that direction.

      I'm so glad you said this. I've been watching these interviews and scrolling through the comments, and I'm shocked at how thoroughly viewers misunderstand what's being said.
      Something that's continually amazed and perplexed me during the last 4 years is how some people really live in a different perceived reality where conspiracy theories are legitimate and people with different perspectives are trying to "destroy America." They can't think rationally or independently, or conceive of anything being true outside the ideology they've bought into--and they don't want to.
      Only recently have I come to understand the terrifying truth that rational argument and facts simply have no effect on roughly half the country. Even ethics--even the suffering of children separated from their families--doesn't stir a shred of humanity or compassion. Heaven help us.

It wasnt something our family really talked about. At least so I could hear it. All I really understood, was that the communists would bomb us, that was scary for us kids. Bomb shelters were being built eveywhere, & we would have drills at school. But guess we werent too savy about all the politics of it. We just wondered why, the communists hated us so much !
