  • Animals of different species rarely get it on, and when they do, they rarely produce offspring. But even rarer than the ligers, zonkeys, camas, and beefalo of the world are hybrid animals capable of making babies of their own.

    - Hybrid organisms: The offspring of two animals or plants of different breeds, varieties, species or genera.
    - Mitosis: A process of cell division that produces copies of the original cell.
    - Meiosis: A process of cell dividion that produces new daughter cells with half the chromosome number of the original cell.
    - Sex cell, or gamete: a cell that fuses with another cell during fertilization (conception) in organisms that sexually reproduce.
    - Hemiclonal transmission: The rare occurence in which only maternal DNA gets passed along during the creation of sex cells.
    Species featured in this video:
    - Mule, is the offspring of a male donkey (jack) and a female horse (mare)
    - Liger, is a hybrid cross between a male lion (Panthera leo) and a female tiger (Panthera tigris)

Your description of miosis is wrong...students might get confused ...fix it ...don't edit a video like this with that much flaw
Sex cells are different they are formed by taking each set of chromosomes then swaping a bunch of cards( crossing over in profaze-1 stage of Miosis-1) between decks... then they decks splitting up(miosos 1) ..... then each of deck duplicate them and they break up....and in this way it creates 4 cells where each of them has 1 complete deck of cards...

Big cat hybrids are strange because all male hybrids are sterile, while females are fertile (though they have cubs pretty infrequently). I've personally always wondered if it were possible for the descendent of a big cat hybrid of a liger for example to have perfectly normal lion descendants, and how many generations it would take before the male descendants of said hybrid to regain fertility, or if they would at all. Like how many generations would it take for that one tiger ancestor to just not matter in the bigger genetic picture.

  • @jmhinnen
    @jmhinnen Před 7 lety +918

That's a pretty good explanation for mule sterility, and I'll add to that:
Mules also have an odd number of chromosomes. You see, a horse has 64 chromosomes, while donkeys have 62. That leaves mules in the middle with 63. Because it's an odd number, it can't split evenly for sexual reproduction. The video kinda touched on that with the "different deck of cards" analogy. :)
Also on that note, the total number of recorded cases of a female mule giving birth within the past 500 years have been 60. Let that sink in: 60 in 500 years, versus millions of mules within that same time span. That's why it's just easier to say that mules are sterile, without having to explained just how miraculously rare it is for a molly (the word for a female mule) to be fertile.

The looks and temperament of that foal would potentially be different than if, instead, the mule's horse mother mated with that same stallion and had a foal with the exact same DNA.
I just looked up "hinny" because I remembered that being mentioned in a book I once read as somehow related to donkeys and mules, but didn't remember how. Well, mules come from a male donkey and a female horse, hinnies come from a female donkey and a male horse, and they're worth distinguishing because not only are hinnies rarer but they also tend towards somewhat different phenotypes than mules do.
Apparently, researchers think this is probably due to two main things: 1.) Genes from different sources being expressed differently-- meaning, I believe, genes from a male parent versus a female parent being expressed differently even if they're otherwise the same; I could be wrong though, I didn't look into it further. This, of course, doesn't apply to our two theoretical foals, who would have identical genomes from effectively the same source. 2.) Conditions in the womb-- such as, say, the size of the womb, and any differences in the hormones running through it (even the same mare could have different hormone conditions in one pregnancy than the next, but the difference between species would be much, much greater). Which certainly would apply.
So the foal would be a horse, but might not be the horse its genetics would suggest. Given the precedent of mule versus hinny, this could wind up assigned a new name of its own.
Of course, I'm not at all an expert. This should all be taken with a grain of salt.
What would be really interesting would be to see if it bred true. Potentially it could... different womb size and other conditions in the resulting horse than if the mule had never been involved could lead to the same general result in the next generation, which could be stable or could get less and less over further generations.
So, thank you KvaGram for accidentally causing this thought experiment.

Fun fact: one hybrid pairing that DOES produce fertile offspring is a polar/grizzly bear hybrid, known as either a grolar bear or a pizzly bear.

A jenny is a female donkey. (Jacks and Jennies). Horses are stallions and mares.
A cross between a jackass and a mare is a mule, while a stallion and a jenny is a hinny.

We say "When red snow falls in white "drops"!, here in Hungary. Yes, we say flakes normally but in this idiom we use drops, like we would talk about the rain and not the snow. Quite a mess, just like when pigs fly or fish climb trees.

Chickens actually have teeth, but due to epigenetic factors, they are shrunken down to a minuscule size where they are fused together and thus become unnoticeable.

  • @whyareyoustillsuscribed3722

"When pigs fly" is a achevement in Minecraft when you ride a pig down a 5 block deep cliff.
