  • This a video of us building a pressure treated raised garden bed and talking about why you should build one this time of year. In addition we know pressure treated wood is a very controversial topic due to everyone remembering a long time ago it was treated differently and the wood contained ARSENIC.

    So nice!! I can’t lift anymore, blown out shoulders from lifting 40 years of nursing. But I love watching this as when young I could do anything. I was so strong. Anyway, I guess lining them will keep the soil away from the boards? This is going to be great come gardening…fun!! 👏🏼👏🏼👍😄

    This is a great video! I just went to our local saw mill and picked up some 2x12. I am going to let them dry out before I assemble them together. Thank you for the easy design!

    No question the 2x planks with 4x4 posts are going to be durable, but frankly you can get by with some 2x4s and rough 1x6 fence material and build your plant box for less than $50. I cut the posts so that about 18" sticks in the ground (probably more than needed). For beds more than say, 12" tall, I would keep posts 4 feet apart max. I also lined the interior walls with heavyduty polyethylene (because I can't wait till they tell us that copper azole -PT wood preservative- is not benign) overlapping the bottom, and geotextile filling out the bottom.

    What are the exact dimensions you used for your cuts? Or can you provide materials list I can go to store and replicate the same size you built.

    so its safe because you say its safe? or its safe because its isnt as toxic as before. but its still toxic. just less toxic? is that right?

      Pressure treated lumber is not toxic. Soley because it isn't.

      There is no study showing it is toxic.
      The fear is based on myth and a level of paranoia.

    3 QUESTIONS- Could you just line the inside with thinner cedar or maybe cedar shingles? Then it could be called organic.
    Question 2 - Do you or can you fill the cracks with wood putty? We have lots of fire ants in SE Texas. They get into everything!
    Question 3 Do you sale your Prime Ark Freedom Blackberry Cuttings & can you ship to Texas?
    These may seem like silly questions but I'm a 71 y/o granny & dont know much about building things or growing things. It seems it will be necessary if I want to eat in the future.😊
    I have watched several of your videis & liked them so I subscribed. Thank you & have a blessed day.
    Ignore question 3, I just watched a video where you talked about your etsy shop.

    What about if you build the 5gallon bucket stand out of gc pt wood but your food is growing in food safe containers ?

      Been wondering this too. I have a platform I need to add wood to for the planters to sit on, but don’t want to use the wrong wood

      @@mcgritty8842 I said fuck it and just full sent it lol I used pressure treated ground contact 2x4 and 4x4s
      If I were doing it on raised beds I would probably put some kind of barrier on the inside
      I’m just using 5 gallon buckets I have 10 buckets currently: 2 asparagus/potatoes, 1 carrot, beet, squash, zucchini, cucumber, and a cherry tomato(sun sugar)
      I have some more tomatoes (brandywine pink), Brussels sprouts, and watermelon I’m waiting to transplant when they get a little bigger lol #fullsend

    I see no reason to make the beds so tall. One can easily get by with 12 inch wide boards. The taller beds are easier to manage as in planting, harvesting, etc.
    A couple of things that worked for me. I do not put my beds that close to a fence. It is a pain getting out grass and weeds between the box and the fence. Also, I make sure all the grass is dead in the box. If a quack grass is alive underneath it will haunt you forever. They seem to have a million lives as their rhizomes spread. I put down a layer of plastic To prevent quack grass from getting in the box I bury the box about 4 inches in the ground.

    Anything in the wood will leach into the ground period

    • @priayief
      @priayief Před 6 měsíci +2

      Of course ...even untreated wood will leach substances into the soil. The question is, will treated lumber leach harmful chemicals in anything close to toxic levels. Do you know the answer to that question, or are you offering an unsubstantiated opinion?

      @@priayiefI can’t tell you for sure . However , I’ve been a carpenter for 34 years . He is correct about the arsenic removal . Which was terrible for us cutting and breathing. However , what they replaced it with wad a product called ACQ … from what I understand is copper based but is alkaline … which is the A and C in the “ACQ” I believe it’s called - Alkaline Copper Qaurintain???? basically what is in batteries … I guess ?🤷🏼‍♂️
      Which just as bad for us cutting and breathing - I CANNOT be sure if he is using a different product . Remember - if the wood will deteriorate steel nails it will prob not be healthy . I like the video and the guy building it . I would just use cedar .

    • @priayief
      @priayief Před 4 měsíci +2

      @@mattstanley8944 Did you know that even pure water can be "toxic". Did you know that arsenic is present in all soils?
      It's all about the amount of a particular element or compound that determines toxicity.
      As for ACQ, laboratory testing has shown that the amount of ACQ used in preserved wood is not of significance and "leeching" into garden soil is not a concern.
      Of course, you can deny the science, but I would rather rely on the science than anecdotal and unsupported opinions.
