    The sound you’re hearing is bagpipes.
    A number of the members of AC/DC are Scottish born or descent, and Bon Scott the lead singer was a drummer in a pipe band growing up. In this song they decided to use bagpipes and he went and bought some; there’s various legends about how it all came to be, but whatever the 100% truth of it, it’s a great sound. I love the dissonance of the outro lines where you can hear the various tones going in and out of tune with each other and causing beats in the sound waves at differing frequencies.
    If you watch the video for this the whole band is on the back of a flatbed truck driving down Swanston Street in my hometown of Melbourne, along with a couple of highland pipers. Bon himself has a set of bagpipes too for the video, but I don’t think he’d have played, he’d just have had them for fun. He was a showman and a larrikin.
    It’s a great old school video that I think U2 paid homage to at one point where they did a similar thing. You see school kids giving Bon a drag on their smokes, and a general sense of confusion by a lot of the public around them. Melbourne was pretty conservative in those days, and AC/DC were pretty much unknown prior to this song coming out.

    Yeah, Bon Scott was the lead singer from their debut album and through the following years up until his death from his own excesses. He died after a huge night out getting himself wasted, officially his death was from acute alcohol poisoning.
    It was early 1980, and they had started working on a new album. Bon left big shoes to fill, but Brian Johnson came in and did an outstanding job on the seminal album Back In Black. That is an incredible hard rock album that they’ve never topped, in my opinion. Brian has been their singer ever since, although I think he may have recently struggled vocally. Not sure on that, but he may have been temporarily or permanently replaced in the last year or so.

  • @sean---the-other-one
    @sean---the-other-one Před 2 lety +2

    I’ve seen them in a decent sized stadium, and it’s one hell of a show.
    They have a format. Brian is up front singing and working the crowd. Angus whips them to a frenzy, often having setups where he can move out right into the audience via catwalks or the like.
    On the backline, the drums are centred and are flanked on both sides by Angus’ brother Malcolm on rhythm guitar on one side and their bass player on the other. Both Malcolm and the bass player just stand in place rocking solidly until the song calls for backing vocals at which point they stride forward to their microphones, sing their parts, and then step back to the backline like a machine.
    The other thing that is a very common part of their concerts are cannons. Their song For Those About To Rock has a bit of s ‘thing’ where the lyrics say ‘for those about to rock… we salute you’ and in the pause there is a blast from the cannons. It’s something to experience.

      Dunno what you call "big" but I recall them being quite famous and popular in the late 1970s. First time I saw them was at Oakland Coliseum in 1978 for one of the Day On The Green concerts, same year I graduated high school (that was one HELL of a graduation present!). They played alongside fellow superstars like Ted Nugent, Blue Oyster Cult, Journey and Cheap Trick. I'd call that "big". Lesser bands don't play Day On The Green shows.
      They didn't come back with scream-singer Brian on vocals until 1981. As far as I felt then and still feel now, it was a completely different sounding band and AD/DC version one was far better. R.I.P. Bon and Malcolm.
