Shredxcam22 Agreed. Sold our 28 foot trailer and bought a rooftop tent for my F150. Love it. High and dry and away from creepy crawlers and dirt. If I can get my truck there, I'm camping for the night.
We tent camped for twenty years, so the only question you’ll get from us is, are you content that your $150 tent will keep you safe from the elements? Last year we purchased a used RV for $7000. Best. Decision. Ever.
Christopher Parks We are fair weather campers to be sure. But saying that, we traveled all the way up through the Yukon and into Alaska, and loved every minute of it. We did have some stormy weather at times, but always remained warm and dry. Wouldn't trade our rooftop tent for anything.

Quality is in the eye of the beholder. It dissapeared 40 to 50 years ago in the components and materials and roughly 30 in the skilled labor. 33K for a 9 year old Redwood is dreaming. Only an uneducated consumer with money to burn would pay this premium. In today's market in this condition I might give you 15. As far as paying for it quicker u don't have many finance options with a 9 YO unit. Rvs will be a dime a dozen used for the next 3 to 5 years.

No.....take it from a former RV owner. Don't buy an RV period. They are all garbage. I don't care how much you pay for them. Dealers are backed up trying to fix these heaps because they are thrown together and therefore won't last.
Good review. We bought a Redwood 36FL, new in 2012. Paid $87k cad. Front living room, Dishwasher, king sized bed and Goodyear G rated tires were some of the upgrades we opted for. We have loved owning it and have full timed in it for the past 2 years. Negligible problems in those 8 years too. They really were better built back then. We have looked at many many different, newer models in the past few years, but still won't change it. Sure, sometimes we think we might want to change furniture and cosmetics, but our layout suits us to a tee. Of course the depreciation stings, but our pragmatic approach is we no longer have a huge mortgage and all the associated costs of running a house. Bills, property taxes, insurances, maintenance and repairs. We have the added bonus of taking our home anywhere we choose! Canada, USA even Mexico.
WOW! I guessed 60K!! What a deal! You mentioned you might have to go around and repair a few issues. Heck, my brand new Raptor toy hauler I have been doing that from day one. This thing is shaken out and ready to go!!! Love it!
I sold my 2018 stick & tin travel trailer I bought new and got a 7 year old toy hauler. Other than dry cracked decals on the outside the trailer is like brand new inside and out. I spent a few hundred $$ upgrading the lighting to LED and putting a modern stereo in. It was over $60,000 new and I got it for mid 20's, I have zero regrets going used. It's not like cars where you're missing out on safety or very many technology features by going older, the only difference between mine and a brand new model is the colours and finishings. I don't think I'll ever buy another new trailer.
For some reason I love RV’s, I feel like if I lived in one it would be A LOT better on my wallet then living in a house. Plus you can literally move anywhere without actually moving. In particular? I love 5th wheel ones, we never owned one but I’ve been in a few with friends and at RV dealers. I love the fact they have their own laundry hookups, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms. Yeah you definitely don’t need a lot to have a nice roof over your head. With all the stuff you want or need.
membear True, but if you have disposable income (i.e., are wealthy enough) then perhaps this is something you want to do, travel and RV. Not my style, but my home is paid for and I don’t have to be greedy enough to just keep making money. I saved and am well off enough to be able to afford a nice trailer if I want and travel at my leisure instead of trying to flip houses.
Depends on a lot of factors. Houses depreciate just like anything else, and for that house to double in value you'd have to put some serious money into updating and renovating.
Great video JD. lotta value in this fifth wheel and with most all of the depreciation gone it would be a real safe choice for a first time buyer in a fifth wheel.
We have a 2015 redwood we bought it new for 60k off the lot in 2016 after numerous price deductions. We got an incredible deal. It is nearly the same as this rig.
That thing is bigger and nice than my first home. A 28 footer with a tilt out. Not a slide, a tilt out. On the beach in Malibu 40 years ago. Couldn't afford the space rent today.
First thing I would do is offer way lower... More importantly try to find it before it ends up at a dealership, because the original owner got paid way less for this rig. I wouldn't pay that much for that rig, especially since I would want to throw out all the cloth furniture and get new stuff that is not as worn. Like you said, get rid of that mattress, and the couch and anything else that might still be harboring bugs. Then bomb it really well pay someone to clean up the chemicals and start with fresh coat of paint and my own décor!
Beautiful unit. I am totally in love with the new Redwood rear kitchen model. It is absolutely gorgeous. However, when I found out they still use Luann in their construction I was really surprised and dreadfully saddened. Most of the really high end fifth wheel manufacturers have opted to go to a non wood backer for their walls. Wish Redwood would follow suite.
Could you do a video on the depreciation and value of a high end coach to a lower level and discuss the pros/cons of better amenities/construction with a high end and the slower rate of depreciation/lesser quality of a low end unit? Just an interesting thought. You could buy 2 Coachmen Brookstones (not a low end unit, just a monetary example) for the depreciation of that coach in 8 years.
Thank you for your time! About to retire & travel. Your excellent critiquing of RV's and trucks has been a real education for me. Keep up the great work. I'll pass on your site! Contact AARP. You should be featured in their magazine! Be safe. Mike
I bought a 2005 alpenlight 32rl in 2015 and it is still an absolutely wonderful camper even now today in2020 original roof and paint i have taken very good care of it and she never lets us down. Origional sticker was 113,000 from the people that commissioned the build and i payed 20 for it and it was worth every penny live in it year round washer and dryer as well
Thank you again for your reviews! I have a 2012 Alpine (Keystone) which I would show against any 2020. Thor has really down-graded their product immensely. I see way to much painted black "bead board" in the places that used to be solid wood. So you are right in your assessment that the older model will really hold up better that the newer ones!
I like the alpine floorplan but recently saw one on a used lot that clearly had the whole front cap separate from the rest of the trailer! it has been put back on by likely the owner so was easy to tell all the sealant slopped over the seam! terrible! makes we wonder if that is a common issue with them! and it was otherwise a very nice unit hmmm
Stills looks good. I just bought a 2007 Lance truck camper it’s in immaculate condition and hardly used. An elderly man used it to go fishing. Towed a small boat behind his truck.
Nice unit. We bought a DRV Mobile Suites 2011 38TKSB3 last year. Also like new. Very solid built 5th wheel. We upgraded the flooring and a few other items. Bought it from a retired couple that was giving up RVing. Paid $25,000. Original MSRP was also almost $130,000
I guessed $60K too, which makes the $33K asking price a steal for me if I were in the market for a pre-owned 5th wheel and the dealership was in my city. Like you, I'm a newbie.
I first thought 60, bur I'm so consistently bad at valuing things i said 'no way i got this one' so I dropped it to 45, as if i was haggling for a car. Almost got it!
Exact same unit as I have. 2012 36RL bought new in 2013 for 70k canukistan kopek's, I live in it for 6 months a year on average, unskirted down to -55c. They are a great investment, very solid well built rv. I've had a few small issues and one larger over the years, everything was covered under warrenty though. Glad to know it's still worth 45k. If anyone is interested in getting questions answered feel free to ask away.
Agreed, however the cost of renting campers is also inflated so for ex pay $200 a month financing my RV. $2,400 a year in payments is the price of a week-long rental and I use mine about 30 days a year. I can also rent out my RV for at least $100 per night.
Called it at $32,000. BOOM !! Still got it. Everyone has their superpower, and mine is ballparking price on ANYTHING. If I was a superhero I'd call myself the ESTIMATOR or BEST GUESS GUY.
Interesting feedback, 6 months ago, 18 mo after this video, we consigned a similar quality/build 6 yr old fifth wheel to a RV dealership for $69k, they sold it within a day for $79k. The market is constantly changing as is supply and demand, and the means of many people. If we had waited 6 months to sell we surely would not have gotten the same price as we did.
Great video. I purchased my 1998 31 foot Seabreeze from a guy who purchased a 2 year old 5th wheel. He actually offered me a grand more than the 3k I purchased it for to get it back. This 5th wheel is a solidly built unit. The only issue I have is trying to find a door lock for it. The only one I found is $100's on Amazon.
RV's depreciate like cars. There is so much "push" from manufacturers to sell new units that the used ones don't hold value. Also, it is much harder to finance a used RV so many buyers have to buy something new just to get financing, even if it means a smaller RV. At $33,000, this thing isn't cheap for most people. It isn't cash on hand. Plus you need a truck that can tow it so more $$$$.
For a 5th wheel, its not a bad looking interior. The exterior paint looks brand new. Not a fan of carpet, but like he said, easy fix. I would be curious to know what they owner traded this in on. Did they buy something new or just get out of camping?
People who don't have much money buy mobile homes because they need a place to live. People who have lots of discretionary funds buy a camper because they like to travel. It's all about perspective since they're two different groups of people.
That’s a great price. I love this fifth wheel. It’s really nice for being 8 years old. $33,000. Is a great price. Thank you JD! This Rv is great really nice!
This is a great lesson on that wonderful word: Depreciation. Follow me with this one... Just imagine being the person who spent $110-$130k. With as fickle as people are, and how quickly people go for the next best thing...there are excellent deals on pre owned homes, travel trailers, RV, trucks etc.
I'm trading in an RV that I bought brand new last year and I'm taking a 40% hit! They just don't hold their value like they should. The only RV's that seem to hold their value are class "C" motorhomes, Airstream travel trailers and those lightweight fiberglass travel trailers (Scamp, Casita and Oliver). There might be others but this is what I have seen on the open market. If you're new to RV's then I would recommend buying used just to try out the lifestyle without breaking the bank.
Back in the day i sold my 72 Holiday Rambler for more than I paid for it. (In a different market 400 miles away) it was sooooo solid! I was full time before it was even heard of. People thought I was nuts.
I bought a one year old 5th wheel, the guy paid $36k plus TTL, he paid cash and a year later things changed in his life and needed to sell it. I walked in and handed him $25k cash with hitch. That may not sound like much of a savings but I did the math and it was over $13000 in cash what I paid over what he paid, probably more. That's over a thousand dollars a month for a year. Think about that a minute? Buying used is for sure the way to go in my opinion. Oh and the F250 Diesel I pull it with I bought used with 84K miles on it for $13,500 so for what he paid I got it and a truck for the same amount of money. #winning! lol.
Have a business where we have to house employees in travel trailers. Have a HR from 2009. And it was the top of the line at the time for a bumper pull. Everyone assumes it's 5 years old at most. And we have newer models from maybe 2014-2015. And they are in worse shape then the 2009. And the 2009 has been lived in full time for 6 months every year since. Might be cheaper overall to buy better quality when buying new. Then the cheap stuff
Its really nice and the full paint thats the winner, i`ve would guess 45k for this nice unit but at 33 thats a bargain. Those new unit do not have the clearcoat or the full paint and the build quality is not there anymore.A good choice for a used unit.Nice video
If it’s 10 years old and looks this good you won’t have any problems getting into a park. We’ve seen much worse! Plus you can always get some $5 vinyl letters at Michaels and stick an updated model ID next to the door like “2019 RL” or similar. This will help stave off any busy bodies that might want to push age discrimination on your RV.
Yes. That's a big part of it. Also it's the type of person that gets in RVing. Many of them treat RV's like they do leased cars. Just get a new one every three years and never really own it.
azt26 absolutely love that comment! Made me laugh my gf has leased for a while then thought she’d buy a nice used diesel for a 5th wheel. Well she has beaten it up like she’s going to turn it in. When I refused to take over the payments she freaked out on how much they aren’t giving her lol. Now she is starting to realize not to tear stuff up.
Tyler the depreciation is a direct result of the true value of an RV. The park's reluctance to accept older RVs also corresponds to the actual value of an RV. The default rate is much higher for lot leases the older an RV. The cost to recover their investment cant be made up on the value of an older RV. Not to mention the cost of getting rid of one once they are not salvageable. It's a real problem in some areas
I would definitely buy a unit like that if it was just me and the wife. I looked at quite a few older units before we decided to spec out our North Point. For us at the time it was definitely the better way to go. Once the kids are gone, all bets are off!! Have always loved those Redwood units!
Around $45,000.00. Way lower price than I thought for sure. Thanks for sharing JD. The only bad part about buying a TT, 5th wheel or coach that old is you will not be able to get into some resorts/campgrounds after a couple more years. I have noticed more an more campgrounds are asking what year you RV is or post on their website Rv can't be over 10 years old. Thanks for sharing JD it is a beautiful RV.
Best thing is to buy with cash. A unit a couple years old and well taken care of. Same thing with cars/trucks. A new 2020 Platinum 2020 F-350 Tremor with 6.7 powerstroke is 83k new! My brother in law purchased a new camaro ss in 2018, $38,000. He just traded it for a 2020 GMC duramax Denali 2500hd, $75,000. They gave him 20k for trade in for camaro, 16,000 miles!!!! He lost almost 50% value in 2 years!!!! He still owed 30,000 on the camaro....so total for new gmc duramax was $85,000!!!!!!!!! In Tampa FL...thats insane!!!
nahhh even at 33k its a gamble, everything thats visible looks good though, what about about all the mechanicals, the plumbing, the appliances, water heater, etc...i bet those are all problematic at this age....
I know Airstreams are not for everyone. But my first new Airstream cost much less than this and was worth much more after the 12 years I had it. I’m glad I purchased another Airstream which in 2018 was less than the 100k this probably sold for new.
I’ve worked at the repair shop , it was filled with current year models lol. Rv’s and motorhomes are made from toothpicks and hopes and dreams. Cardboard walls , every component is of the absolute cheapest quality available. Not worth anything! Have to pay me to take that damn money pit.
@@macalewesp4082 yeah I actually built rv’s so I’m gonna have to call bs. I’ve also built houses with these two hands and know quality and anything on wheels is trash.
If I ever buy one it has to have an aluminum frame, 4 season and a permanent roof. I have seen quite a few with beautiful white rubber roofs that shrink and deteriorate in the sun and need replaced at 7 years. At least the old metal Holiday Rambler TT's would have a metal roof and could be coated with mobile home roof coat for $80 or less for the good stuff. I like 3 or 4 slides but many top end models have rubber shades/awnings on the slides to prevent leaks and sun damage. 3 a/c units is a big plus but when that unit reaches 10 years old or older it won't be allowed at many RV parks because of it's age regardless of how nice it looks.
My buddy has 2 of these one he travels in and keeps at his home in SD the other is permanently placed in Yuma he’s owned others he’s never paid more than $30 k used. And his are just as nice
It's a nice rig and a nice price. That being said, I bought our brand new, with warranty, 40 ft Forest River Cardinal Limited with similar floorplan for $45k. We have a king bed, larger shower, although no bedroom access but same location, and a warranty on everything. Less weight bc our frame isn't that beefy, Mor ryde suspension, Lippert 2.0 which has it's advantages and not. Full electric fridge with inverter. There are some things I wish I had that I can upgrade over time(Fantastic Fan, battery bank, possibly solar, definitely a generator) but trying it out is the true test. So far I'm loving this rig compared to our 2012 destination model Road King by Bridgeway. It had ok amenities and room but the family that were saying we will stay with in the 2nd bedroom never materialized, plus 8 yr old RV problems will rear their butt as soon as you put the systems into use.
That's a very nice beautiful unit... Price Caught me totally by surprise... Terrible depreciation hit... Feel sorry for the person that traded it in he got nothing for a trade in value.... Maybe he should've kept it
Very nice trailer did notice that beautiful ruby red F450 in the background that trailer would look get behind it. I would never guessed 33,000 for it. This is really a good video to show you what you can pick up 2nd hand.
My 2009 Keystone Montana was £25,000 British pounds three years and that included importing it from Florida. I guessed $25-$30,000. What is clear, don't buy new ,as the depreciation hit is huge.
Wow! Love it. Older models so much more homey. Wouldn't change a thing. Would have guessed 70s but it's 2022. Prices crazier now. I bet it's worth even more now. Would love you to have more older models. New ones are getting a little boring. 😴
This is why we buy airstreams 10 years later you get back close to 100% of cost. I see used airstream going for more then I paid. I talk to a gentleman who had five and never lost money on them. Airstreams are not as fancy as this but they hold value
70k was my guess! But when buying an RV or 5th wheel I was buying New and got a model when gas was at its height! So I got a good deal in my mind on a model used at a show for 50k off the sticker! Like I said I was happy! Anyway the guy selling it to took me through a bunch first and I ask why so many had low miles? He said people buy them and want another bigger or different when in a few years to fit their life style better! 2 years later we traded in on another larger model from Cali that was ordered but not picked up and wasn’t moved so we got another good deal 3 years later we sold it for the same price we bought it for! Blind squirrel type of thing I guess! 6 years later we bought a small Itasca Mercedes model and we love it and it fits us perfectly! We’ve had it for 5 years and put more miles on it than the former 2 by double! So look newer used but have it checked out all those I traded in were very nice and keep up well!
And that's why we are buying a tent for $150 this year
I was given a pop up camper ..lol. much smaller. Much more manageable.
Dang man i got mine on ebay for $20 8x8 lol

Shawn_358 “back then”

100%.
@Ms. Tal Depends on the mattress. A cheap one sure, but expensive mattresses cost thousands.
Love it.
Put 3k in personal touches and make it your own. Sleep number mattress, new counter and floors, flat screen and your good to go.
Jesus. RV depreciation makes buying a boat look like a great investment. 😂
I think you get what you pay for.
Pride in ownership. I have that with my cheap Travel trailer and my 2011 Tahoe. This is a nice unit that someone is going to get a bargain on.
Origional sticker was 113,000 from the people that commissioned the build and i payed 20 for it and it was worth every penny live in it year round washer and dryer as well
Sue from Ontario Canada, wow I guessed $70,00 what an awesome trailer..
i think this is my favorite 5th wheel rv in the world
Thank you again for your reviews!
Towed a small boat behind his truck.
lost 100k in value, god damn! definitely looking for a gently used RV/5th wheel when it's on my retirement list
Wow. My first guess was$60K. 😂 I’m a newbie!
I guessed $60K too, which makes the $33K asking price a steal for me if I were in the market for a pre-owned 5th wheel and the dealership was in my city. Like you, I'm a newbie.
Same here... 33k seems like a steal
I geussed 30k at first then thought, cant be that cheap, so bumped it to 55k
You don't pay that much for a 7 year old anything except maybe a collector car like a 67 Mustang GT restored.
130k new, 8 years later 33k and (guessing) 20k on trade, the motor vehicle industry is the worst thing to put your money in and a criminal business.
Agreed, however the cost of renting campers is also inflated so for ex pay $200 a month financing my RV. $2,400 a year in payments is the price of a week-long rental and I use mine about 30 days a year. I can also rent out my RV for at least $100 per night.
All the RV buying guides suggest you negotiate to 50% of the MSRP as a fair price.
@@snippittmaster Agree. If you only look at new ones on website's for small ones, They have "MSRP 30k" but selling for 18k.
@Mm Mm Thank god if you buy new and dont wreck it or damage it due to user error, insurance and warranties take care of the bulk of those costs.
There's nothing criminal about a voluntary exchange
Called it at $32,000. BOOM !! Still got it. Everyone has their superpower, and mine is ballparking price on ANYTHING. If I was a superhero I'd call myself the ESTIMATOR or BEST GUESS GUY.
I wonder if being a 5th wheel has something to due with depreciation since this type of rv is limited to those with larger tow vehicles
Beautiful RV and I'm saying 26 gran for my guess on price....
WOW, I'm shocked that it's priced this low!
Dam -- that is a nice rig - thanks for sharing
W
I owe a 2012 Redwood 36RE with full body paint just in black and silver... She's Beautiful inside, and out...
If someone paid $130000 for a mobile home, people would say they're crazy...but $130000 for a camper is a "great deal"..lol. Crazy world...
People who don't have much money buy mobile homes because they need a place to live. People who have lots of discretionary funds buy a camper because they like to travel. It's all about perspective since they're two different groups of people.
A mobile home only has enough brake pad to go down the road once or twice
A mobile home only has enough brake pad to go down the road once or twice
That’s a great price. I love this fifth wheel. It’s really nice for being 8 years old. $33,000. Is a great price. Thank you JD! This Rv is great really nice!
This is a great lesson on that wonderful word: Depreciation. Follow me with this one... Just imagine being the person who spent $110-$130k. With as fickle as people are, and how quickly people go for the next best thing...there are excellent deals on pre owned homes, travel trailers, RV, trucks etc.
John yep people just love to pay for that new car smell, glad I never acquired that symptom.lol
Crazy how long it’s taken RV interiors to catch up with modern home interiors. A 2012 redwood looks like a 1980’s home
You obviously weren't alive in the 1980s lol
Drink Everytime this guy says "unit"
27 times
Or “nice” if u want to get really f*%k up lol
8 year’s old
or trim
Its an industry term :P
I'm trading in an RV that I bought brand new last year and I'm taking a 40% hit! They just don't hold their value like they should. The only RV's that seem to hold their value are class "C" motorhomes, Airstream travel trailers and those lightweight fiberglass travel trailers (Scamp, Casita and Oliver). There might be others but this is what I have seen on the open market. If you're new to RV's then I would recommend buying used just to try out the lifestyle without breaking the bank.
I owe a older Holiday Rambler 5th wheel. I’m guessing the price tag on this unit runs around $45,000 - $50,000.
Back in the day i sold my 72 Holiday Rambler for more than I paid for it. (In a different market 400 miles away) it was sooooo solid! I was full time before it was even heard of. People thought I was nuts.
Running around making apologies for this rig like it was built in the 60's....."Not bad considering the Era it was built in".....
This thing might of had 130k MSRP but would have sold for 90k new.
It does look old inside. But I like it ok.
$33 g’s. Wow that’s nuts. Then again deprecation when you drive it off the lot.
100% the state wins on every transaction taxes, licenses and whatnot fees. Smh
Is the depreciation of RVs due to the fact that some parks won’t allow RV’s older than 10 years?
good question, be a bummer to have this one that looks new and be told you cant stay because of what year it was built, looks great,
If it’s 10 years old and looks this good you won’t have any problems getting into a park.
The previous owners obviously loved this RV. They took excellent care of her.
Ouch, I wonder how much the dealer bought it back for..
20-25k?
Less than 20k I bet.
Probably gave them 50 in trade and added the extra to the price of the new rig.
Carl Rice That how they do and everyone is Happy 😃
I would definitely buy a unit like that if it was just me and the wife. I looked at quite a few older units before we decided to spec out our North Point. For us at the time it was definitely the better way to go. Once the kids are gone, all bets are off!! Have always loved those Redwood units!
Must have been a 2012 style. My alpine was a 12’. And it’s very close to the same layout, colors, floor plan etc.
As a FORMER RV salesman, you really need to do your research before buying one
Can you tell us about the scams the salesmen pull to avoid getting screwed?
As far as worn out stuff goes, we bought a 17 year old tt and everything works great.
That's why we bought our flagstaff 3 years old in perfect condition.
Boy, was I off on the price.
I know Airstreams are not for everyone. But my first new Airstream cost much less than this and was worth much more after the 12 years I had it. I’m glad I purchased another Airstream which in 2018 was less than the 100k this probably sold for new.
33k sign me up! The life long saying for dudes is “if only I was single”
Busta Zac exactly!!
I expected $33,000 so I was pretty close! Good price for a good looking unit!
That's retail used, they got about 10-15K for a trade in.
Search for some videos of the actual builds (Van Leigh, for example.) That is not always the case.
@@macalewesp4082 yeah I actually built rv’s so I’m gonna have to call bs.
I’ve also built houses with these two hands and know quality and anything on wheels is trash.
Would pay that in a heart beat. Beautiful unit.
Anybody that has $30,000 in cash laying around already has an RV.
3 a/c units is a big plus but when that unit reaches 10 years old or older it won't be allowed at many RV parks because of it's age regardless of how nice it looks.
much lower than what I expected
My buddy has 2 of these one he travels in and keeps at his home in SD the other is permanently placed in Yuma he’s owned others he’s never paid more than $30 k used. And his are just as nice
$ 55,000
EDIT. I was off...DAMN
Maybe he should've kept it
I agree, he lost $100.000, this is a reminder that RV's are not an investment
Very nice trailer did notice that beautiful ruby red F450 in the background that trailer would look get behind it. I would never guessed 33,000 for it. This is really a good video to show you what you can pick up 2nd hand.
Hey! You put the old jingle back in with the new graphics....much better.
Just like any other vehicle on the the road it depreciated about 75%, so an adjusted MSRP when new of $110,000. I,m going with $27,500 - $30,000.
I would love to have this . it's beautiful
I was thinking $35,000. Thanks for video.
$33K???? I was thinking $60K. Well worth it. Just goes to show how quickly RVs depreciate. Nice unit, great quality.
$33,000 is a great deal for somebody, but I thought the interior was a bit too outdated. Buying a used RV is definitely the way to go.
