  • Which is the best version of Star Wars Galaxies? Pre-CU was a pure sandbox, and arguably one of the best examples of the genre ever made, but it had it's problems. The CU (Combat Upgrade) was meant to solve some of these but how successful was it ultimately?
    And why in 2005 did SOE decide the game needed a third revamp with the much maligned NGE (New Game Experience)?

    I feel like it doesnt matter what version, NGE, CU, etc. The important thing is the player count. This is a massive sandbox game with typically bad questing and not the most interesting combat, so being able to see lots of people running around and interact with is mega-important to ones enjoyment in SWG. Like my funnest moments in game was being on Tatooine and being at the starting player hub, and seeing all sorts of players running around, while i figured out my directions and hung out for buffs.

    Great footage, especially the part with Bree's new shop!
    I think what they're doing on Restoration 3 will be the best version of SWG. I remember combat, especially pvp combat being the most fun during the CU, it still had all the classes too with all the better animations and complex crowd control abilities. They're bringing in all the best parts from NGE like entertainer build a buff, and jump to lightspeed. Smuggler will be slicing and selling spice again, player bounties will be the same as NGE, end game heroics and expansions are all on there etc...
    Unless you're already heavily invested on Legends like myself I think giving R3 a shot would be a good idea.

    Man, I'm so hyped for R3 and going back to the version of SWG that I really got into back in the day! I had dabbled with the pre-cu briefly back around '03, but coming from games like EQ, DAoC, and the like, I was never able to get into it for whatever reason.
    When I came back to try again during the brief CU-era, I don't think I realized that I had came back during a transitional period (I was still young and not so perceptive to such things) but I was now really loving the game! I remember getting so close to being force sensitive that I could almost taste it. I had pre-ordered the expansion (something I rarely ever do) and then out of nowhere, everything was different. I was so pissed! I quit the game just days later and didn't try again until years later when the NGE had been polished, but just like the Pre-CU, I couldn't get into it for one reason or another.
    I followed, and have continued to follow, the SWGEMU team and their progress since they started back in '06 (I think?) but it wasn't until I tried Basilisk that I realized it wasn't the version of the game I had enjoyed so much back then; and that the version I played was a very short-lived one that no one seemed interested in bringing back. I was bummed about it but I kept following their progress.
    Fast-forward to R3 and their plans for SWG--basically taking the best parts from the NGE version and the parts missing from the SWGEMU (JTL) and incorporating them with the CU combat system--and I felt like I may have finally found my SWG home again. It will be so cool getting to play the game the way I remember it, while having the questing system and other extras that the NGE version added. I think it will be the definitive version of Galaxies for me. I only hope the team behind R3 will be as committed as the SWGEMU and Legends teams have been and that the CU version of the game will live on for years to come. Fingers crossed!
    (Please excuse the wall of text.)

    I do wonder what sort of trajectory SWG would have taken in a market without WoW or if SOE has embraced a free to play model in 2004/2005 and stayed ahead of the curb of market forces. I also feel that the term NGE does a disservice to the game game post 2007 where they really built up the mechanics and content far in the excess of Pre-CU. It's really the 4th and final era of the game.

About that time I was hyped with TOR and that was my first star wars mmo. Having said that I play the game for 5 years but alas Bioware decided to make the game for more casual players so I decided leave. Then i discovered the swg legends server. I try it but for some reason it was like an older version of swtor. The swg restoration 3 on the other hand, OMG it has evrything i dreamed about of a star wars mmorpg and is coming live this Friday. It really is a shame how many "IPs" have essentially been shot in the back by the devs over the years. Especially in an effort to compete instead of worrying about what makes their player base happy... SWG, C&C, and Battlefield come to mind for me.

    i didnt mind the CU, i unlocked my jedi 9 months before the cu, was just done leveling out master healer 3 months before completing my first build, once the cu hit, the jedi unlock system still held to the 2 week village cycle, meaning it was 3 months MINIMUM to even become a padawan if you played everyday. but, most of us got use to it, who loved the game, also. we had rage of the wookiees a week or so, before the CU, got vaders ship, then the cu, was designed to be more like wow, thats the only reason they released CU, to try and compete with wow, which some of the Hardcore VERY Hardcore pre cu players, that didnt want ANYTHING else but it, didn't like it but, they played anyway LOL. the cu, was more like pre cu then NGE, once the NGE came out, us that stayed, were saying uhhh yea about us bitching about the CU, we wanted it back, they said it was gone from the datamines, it obviously wasn't

    Honestly, the Ridiculousness of Pre-CU is #1 (serious fan of the Ridiculousness of “BOFURI”), Sorta like the profession stat balancing of CU, & the questing of NGE is also awesome. Just take the best of the three & combine them. I also think that all combat professions (Entertainers & Medics can be considered a sort of Support with their own Tank/Damage Dealer abilities Usually low), but all professions are synonymous to the Old Republic’s Economic professions of gathering resources & crafting items to sell.
    The only thing that I’d keep from the NGE, but apply it to the Pre-CU/CU is preplanning specializations &, depending on how well you progress in certain aspects, auto-level accordingly & such…

Later I came back for the NGE, all excited about getting to be a jedi, and quickly found they had ruined the game. The combat was dull and there were jedi everywhere. The thing that always interested me was how rare a jedi was and seeing one was actually exciting. I knew I would never be one but it was very cool that they existed and were hunted.

    How SOE did not have exclusive license for SW MMO in 2011-14? The 4000y / bby (before battle of Yavin) weasel clause that was in the contract to allow BioWare to launch SWTOR etc? or was it all SWG was dying at time and monthly license fee to Lucas Arts just too steep, so Smedley said F it, shut it down? Smedley can apologize as much as he wants, it doesn't fix that he ruined our game. Years later, I can admit that the NGE isn't bad, it's just at the time it ruined the game we all knew and loved. No longer could we be pretty much anything we wanted. We were forced down specific paths. There were no I'll take a few boxes in four or five different trees to have a truly unique (and possibly useless lol) character. Maybe you had been a MRifleman/MRanger with enough points in artisan to have a vendor to sell your collected hides/bones/meat. Or maybe, like me, you were a BE/CH with some combat skill thrown in. I think that's why people got so upset over the NGE at the time. I know it's why I got upset. A lot of us old timers still feel strongly about it. Also the CU was more of a CD, but that's just my opinion. Anything that made TKM useless was a bad thing. I have played on Basilisk, but I haven't remade my character on the new one. I'm currently on Legends and enjoying the NGE side far more now than I did back when it was actually new. lol Also, to the interview who will never see this, I'm not a fanboi. I'm a fangirl.

  • @Indyday
    @Indyday Před 2 lety

    SOE and Lucas Arts are responsible for the fail. The main problem was the tight deadline. The publisher wanted to see the dollars roll as fast as possible but they hadn't the look for middle- and longterm impact by selling an unfinished product to the customer. It simply came out 1-2 years too early and was completely unfinished. The ppl stayed because of the "Star Wars feeling" and the interactive community. They didn't stay for the "great" content (that didn't exist). Also the ballance was complete sh*t. A single person could kill a krayt dragon! The whole macro system also was the idea of a very stupid person. I have played dozens of MMOs so far but the degree of (InGame) Macro-abuse is the worst in SWG. They never should have implemented such a deep macro system that allows to do almost anyting while afk. The idea of a sandbox game with a star wars setting with a 100% player driven economy and player cities was groundbreaking. It just needed more time to get more and better content in the first place. Then SOE decided to show the middlefinger to the remaining players and killed the original game by butchering the core elements of SWG. No wonder why the game was lost after the CU and NGE. I tried Finalizer (I think the most populated SWG Emu Server out there with about 500-700ppl) for about 2 weeks now and it is still the same crappy game like it was back in the days. But with fewer people and AFK Entertainers, Doctors, Samplers in a few locations like Mos Eisley Cantina etc. It's not worth to invest a lot of time because there is no long term goal. Grinding for 2-3 weeks and you have a fully equipped/skilled character. Playing for another 2-3 weeks and you have seen most of the content the game has to offer.

  • @billlyell8322
    @billlyell8322 Před rokem

    You will always have cheaters abuse the system if you are not proactive in response to problems. Macros where a key part of the gameplay exerience in the original. Everyone thst complains that the combat was cluncky and bad didnt properly use macros. It didnt matter what combat class you played you could create a macro set to fit your play style. You where never a cookie cutter version of the same character.
    Macros also removed the grind to level that was terribly laborious if you where a crafter. Yes later you could set up factories and harvestors but it was laborious hours of grinding to get those.
    It was not the tools that was basd but the implimentation! You complained in overpowered buffs, but putting a maximim cap on buffs was far easier to do than either upgrades. As for player using akf macros to stay on indefinately, i would say a simple timer would have been a much better solution.
    The fact was swg was sold as a sandbox rpg. It was NEVER a shooter that held your hand every step of the way. Omg use your freakin brains for once. If you want a shooter go play one but dont force it into an rpg.
    As a player that was there from day one to when they shut it down to sell swtor. The original was the best. The company was fools to try to shove it into a roll it didnt fit into.
    Was it perfect? Absolutely not. But had they put simple fixes in stead of the moronic chsnges they did make the game could still be going strong today. First by patching the holes in playability, adding exploitation timers, upgrading graphics over the years and finially adding additional content.
    They could have easily added locations that could lead you through independant stories for those that have to be kead through a game with a ring in their nose.
