Jerry Lee was the 1st to record Great Balls of Fire (released 1957), but the Elvis vibe likely comes from 2 reasons. 1-It made at Sun Records (where Elvis recorded at the same time) & 2-It was written by Otis Blackwell (& Jack Hammer). Otis wrote/co-wrote some massive hits, including Jerry Lee’s Breathless & Elvis’ All Shook Up, Return to Sender & Don’t Be Cruel (as well as Fever, most famous by Peggy Lee). Sun has a huge place in early R&R. The kind of studio where Elvis, Jerry Lee, Johnny Cash & Carl Perkins just bumped into each other one day (Dec. 1956) &, impromptu, gathered around a piano, talking & singing (later referred to as the Million Dollar Quartet session), Thankfully, somebody thought to record that!

Remember, Rock and Roll only started in the mid 1950s with Elvis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, and a few others. These were the pioneers of Rock and Roll. Without guys like Jerry Lee, there would be no Beatles, Rolling Stones etc. Jerry Lee Lewis was a madman! Early Rock and Roll was great.

Good point. Before people like those you cited, it's stuff like Duke Ellington and Doris Day. They were great too, but that is a massive shift in what music sounds like, and what's acceptable in terms of performance. And those changes then led to all of the great early 60's rock bands which stretched all the way into androgyny and glam in the 70's.

The best story about this song is Jerry Lee and Chuck Berry were on the same show. They were arguing about who was going to close the show, Jerry Lee argued that he had the #1 song at the time, Chuck argued he had more hits, Chuck then stated it was in his contract to close. So Jerry Lee went on first. He closed his set with this song, which while playing he poured gas into piano and set it on fire while he continued to play. When he finished, he walked off the stage and told Berry....."Follow that, killer!"

Jerry Lee Lewis was a phenomenal piano player who walked into Sun Records in Memphis to audition all cocky and full of himself as if he already knew how great he was. It cannot be overstated how much Jerry Lee loved himself. Every song he recorded for Sun Records he finished in 2 takes tops - except "Great Balls of Fire." Aside from being a great piano player, Jerry Lee was also a devout Christian and, while recording "Great Balls of Fire," he kept having panic attacks thinking that he was going to Hell for playing Rock 'n' Roll, which detractors called the Devil's music. It took label owner Sam Philips a few hours to convince Jerry Lee that he was not going to Hell for playing Rock 'n' Roll.

    And they blasted me sky-high

Elvis never recorded this song, although he played it live sometimes. Elvis and Jerry Lee were buddies, although Jerry Lee was a LOT wilder than Elvis. Elvis was the first to become a star, though, so he was more of an influence on Jerry Lee than the other way around. The two of them were members of the legendary Million Dollar Quartet for Sun Records along with Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash. They recorded an informal jam session together that remained unreleased for many years (largely because Elvis had already left Sun for RCA at that time), but is now a highly sought after collectors item...especially the versions that include all the songs (they recorded about 60 songs in ONE DAY!). Jerry Lee is the last of the Sun legends who remains alive, and has recorded a series of "Last Man Standing" albums to commemorate that fact.

Loved seeing both of you guys’ faces immediately brighten up when the song started playing. Then grinning and grooving to the music. “It’s gets in your body” like BJ said! Y’all are super cute and fun to watch and I enjoy watching you guys discover lots of great music, especially music I listened to growing up in the 80’s, which was mostly 60’s, 70’s and 80’s music. Keep up the great videos

Jerry Lee rocked! He plays the heck out of the piano. You should watch the movie "Great Balls of Fire" about Jerry's life. It stars Dennis Quaid, and he plays that role to the tee! It goes from the beginning of his career to when he blows it by marrying his underage cousin. It's a darn good movie. Dennis rocks it.

I saw him perform in 1989 on a floating stage at La Ronde Montreal after the concert my girlfriend and I with another couple were leaving the venue and we see a white limo and who do we see see but him. We walk over asking for his autograph and he gave it to us but stood there with us for about 20 minutes just talking with us.

Elvis never recorded this. You're probably thinking of "Blue Suede Shoes" by Elvis which has a similar feel. But alas, even that was a cover of the Carl Perkins original.

Rock evolved from Rock n Roll. Parents hated it and called it Devil's Music. So of course it then gave their rebellious teeny boppers more reason to love it. Even the name had a sexual innuendo that shocked Bible thumping elders. Rocking and rolling was what couples did in the hay when they snuck off to the barn

This was jerry Lee’s song. His first real claim
    To international
Fame. He was so jelous of Elvis. I’ve probably seen 20 videos where he talks about that He couldn’t break through the the way Elvis did. Massive talent but his arrogance and his personal life choices kept him from being even bigger than he was. My mother LOVED him. Not more than Elvis, but he was at the top for her. He was fun.

Otis Blackwell is the song writer, from his records i recall he was more a Jazz/blues artist. I was blessed to grow up in a time when all this music was being revived during the British Rockabilly explosion of the late 1970's. it meant the fashions of the late 50's was just being relived with an 80's vibe, crazy, cool time to be in that scene with so many others.

Like a lot of artist from this period, many of Jerry Lee’s hits were covers. Jerry Lee did write this song though. There is actually a recording of Jerry Lee first developing the idea for the song while having a conversation with Sam Phillips (owner of Sun Records) about the Bible.

I knew a pastor that played just like that. He said he was a cousin of JLL and that their grandmother had taught them to play. I generally don't believe anything people say but I had no qualms believing what he said. He put his money where his mouth was, so to speak. That man played like he had 4 hands from one end of the piano to the other with that same rockin' style and you just don't see that every day.

******* Mickey Rourke was at one time going to play Jerry Lee Lewis ,However owing to contract issues it didn't come to pass. He would have made a better person portraying Jerry Lee . Gary Busey was also due to play the part. Can't remember as to why he didn't do it. - it may have been owing to him having put on a little weight. --- ****** Jerry Lee changed his mind as re. The film. He wasn't very happy with it ,the way he was portrayed etc. Even though he did say at the time when the film first came out that he thought Dennis quaid had done a good Job. --- The Best part of the film is Jerry Lee's re.recordings of his Sun records hits . ---

I'm 80 years old, so I grew up with all these oldies, but goodies !! Jerry Lee was HUGELY popular and remained on the charts for several years. Unfortunately his career took a turn downward when he married his 14 year old cousin and the record companies sort of blackballed him. However, you can't keep a great entertainer down forever...he was appropriately elected into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame !!
Check out some of his other songs...like "Whole Lotta Shakin Going On"
BTW...there's a TON of oldies in that generation...Sam Cook, Marvin Gaye, Doobie Bros., Temptations, and loads of others, that will knock your socks off !!
