For winter commuting. I have an Aluminum frame. I rebuilt the bike with anti seize on all threads, eg pedal threads and BB. Put a drop of triflow on everything you don't want to corrode, during regular service especially spoke nipples. Rise with fresh water regularly, in a garden pump sprayer which has a gentle mist. The KMC X series fully nickle plated chain on my winter commuter has held up very well, and I use a wet lube (currently white lightning wet ride). Bringing the bike indoors to thaw and dry out every day makes a massive difference. A good bike polish helps the frame shed salt and dirt when it thaws, and keeps it pretty clean.

    Welcome to Gear Gab.
I like to coat the frame with some sort of wax for foul weather commuting... seems to work. I have the luxury of being able to hose my whip off when i get to work, so I like to do that every so often... and try to clean, and re-lube the chain with some sort of frequency.
Oh, and frame saver until it oozes out of every hole there is. As my other favorite Canadian would say "The bigger the gob, the better the job."

Great stuff! Coat a cotton swab with your spray then use the swab to apply liquid you won’t cry back spray.

When I travel w bikes, I have a set of 1 gallon garden sprayers I bring, 1 soapy water, one just water. In winter it’s great to rinse the fat bike w warm water from inside the car when you get where you’re going, and in summer it’s nice to knock the dirt off the fat bike before you get home

ATF oil for the chain works wonders on my fatbike. Completely stops the chain and cassette from rusting. Buying galvanized replacement bolts will hold rust away for longer as well.

I use waterproof grease on my winter bikes. It's not really as fast as regular grease because it's so sticky. But it works all season.

Where I live they use sand or littles stones on the b-roads and only use salt on main-roads. I still hide the steel frame inside from Dec-Feb though it gives me a chance to strip and re-grease everything. Which in turn gives me the chance to convince myself I NEED new bike parts.

I switched to belt drive and internal gearing for my daily commute. In my town, they use this brine stuff in the winter that just eats chains for breakfast. Now I don't have to worry about anything. Well, except for bolts seizing. I've got plenty of that. XD

FENDERS! Or as we call them over here, mudguards. They protect me from road spray and the bike too!

Question: are the handlebars on the BMX not also steel? Moisture could still get in there.
Well done on the training! I was wondering how it was going
Maybe do a weekly update on progress?

If its just for the drive, could you just wrap the areas in saran-wrap?

As someone commuting in semi rural Nova Scotia with nowhere to bring their bike inside I just spray rust check inside of all of the tubes and wax my frame

More than half the potable water in my town is desalinated sea water, maybe some of it drained off your roads 🙃😂
Salted roads seem like a major pain to deal with, I drive a twenty year old car but I am thinking that's not a thing where you are.

I really like the product called "Fluid Film" for inside steel frames, it does a good job of creeping everywhere and creating a bit of a film on the inside. Smells very weird though.

It's the best anti-rust there is. For those wanting to avoid petroleum, boiled linseed oil does fine as well.

I personally install bolts into any open holes in the frame or at least put a piece of electrical tape over them, unless it's a drain hole in the bottom of the frame bb area

use vaseline, that is what we use here in Newfoundland on fat bikes, all surfaces, and bolts coated, not the brakes, lol.

For the people who don't have much money if you have an oily rag laying around your garage just wipe your bike down because all you need is a thin layer of coating to protect it and you keep doing it every once in a while in the winter time and you will never have rust those that have aluminum or carbon bikes yeah we're not talking to you

Not to be an Eco Freak, but Road Salt ALSO impacts our waterways, both plant and animal life. And our waterways affect the entire rest of our living environments.

Road salt is a nightmare (i'm in the uk), but is it better or worse than turbo salt 🤮
