This video has quickly become a MAJOR point of contention on our channel. We have received a large amount of negative comments, comments mean enough to bring Kara to tears.
I usually deal with negative comments by ignoring them and not instigating the discussion any further than necessary. However, in this case I feel the need to respond not only for ourselves, but our friends who have been working in Thailand for the last 10 years.
To be completely honest, we have deleted most of the negative comments. Whether this was the right or wrong way to handle the situation, I’m not sure. I’m sure that on one hand it makes us seem very closed minded. But on the other hand we didn’t want anyone else reading through the comments to be exposed to the hatred and negativity that we’ve been bombarded with since publishing the video.
The negative comments have centered around a few of the same key issues, and I will attempt to address each one below.
"We were 'fresh off the plane' and did not truly understand the situation": First, we came to Bangkok via train… Second, the information that we conveyed in the video was not an opinion that we had formed during only two days in Bangkok. We were doing our best to pass along information that from our friends who live there. One is Thai who’s lived there her whole life, and the other has lived in Thailand and worked closely with girls from this industry since 2004.
"The girls WANT to be prostitutes and they ENJOY their job": This type of comment is the one that made me the maddest, because it could only be made out of pure ignorance. If you had heard the stories of the way these girls are treated, you would be horrified. I’ll offer two specific examples. One of the girls was locked in shed (for a YEAR) where she was raped and beaten repeatedly. Another girl went to the hotel room with one of her customers. When she arrived, there were five other men there who proceeded to gang rape her the entire night. These are just two of the specific stories that we heard, but I think it goes to show that this is a dangerous life style that no girl would CHOOSE if they were given alternatives.
"There’s a difference between prostitution and sex trafficking": We definitely messed up on this one. We used these words interchangeably at times and we shouldn’t have. I apologize for the confusion. However, to believe that sex trafficking does not exist in Bangkok is very naive. Specifically in Pattaya, there is a large amount foreign girls who walk the street not by their choosing. We were told the girls were SOLD (to who knows) in Pattaya in order to pay off debts that their families had incurred.
We also received a lot of comments that said something along the lines of, “Bad things are happening everywhere why did you choose this topic to focus on." That was the nice version. Add in your own expletives and hatred to get a truer sense of the comments.
I’ll be the first to admit that this world is screwed up, and that there’s a ton of bad things happening all around the world. We could devote every vlog to raising awareness for a different injustice that’s happening somewhere in the world. We didn’t fly all the way around the world to highlight this specific issue and nothing else. We were close to Bangkok, we had friends there who we think are doing amazing work, and we wanted to tell their story through our platform. That’s why we chose to spend a day highlighting this organization. Also, this will not be the last injustice that we bring to light on this vlog.
A few people thought it was "pointless to fight against a billion industry because we could never stop it". That may or may not be true, but what I KNOW to be true is that many girls' lives have been changed for the better thanks to the Home of New Beginnings.
In regards to the reason we set up a GoFundMe page: The Home of New Beginnings does not have a way for people to donate directly to their organization online. GoFundMe was a fast and easy way for us to allow people to donate if they wanted to support the organization, and it is ALL going to them.
I’m sure there were other hateful things said that I did not address, but I believe that covers the reoccurring themes. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on the situation, but if your opinion is left as a hateful comment below we’ll probably delete it.

+Kara and Nate No negative comments here, were I in your shoes with your background (My mother is a strong christian) I would also feel the same way. I simply want to engage in meaningful dialogue on the situation in a public forum with the ability for others to judge the situation on their own, positive or negative. Your response was very eloquent and well thought out overall. Wish you all the best, hope to engage in some conversation in public or private in the near future. Keep in mind, there is a major organization similar to you, the Tamar Center (google it) currently in business on the street I run my bar on and they are cordial and polite to us as we are to them. Take care.

Stay strong on your cause, this is a tuff topic to understand in Thailand, I agree there is trafficking inn Thailand but these are not the girls you meet in the tourist spots they are reserved for the Thais (Caution on going down this route). Most of the girls you are right feel the need to support for there family's however a large majority just want the money and it's something that's been handed down from mother to daughter. Never ending cycle.

+Kara and Nate I know a guy who has been going to Thailand for 20+ years and is now retired there in his 60's. He knows many bar girls. I showed him this video and he just laughed and continued to tell me a story about one girl he was with who's phone constantly rang.. after she got off the phone he asked her who it was.. she proceeded to tell him that it was her "boyfriend" aka "sponsor" in Australia who sends her $800 / monthly to keep out of the bars. The girl was taking his $800, telling him she no longer "works" in the bars. Most bar girls are just like that. They'll happily take your money too and run right back to the bar. Most are only interested in easy money and the latest cell phone model to show off to their friends. What you two don't seem to understand is that the majority of these girls are quite happy doing what they do. They have lots of friends who do the same thing. Just watch some of the videos of bar girls on youtube.. most of the girls are hanging out with their friends, dancing, laughing, drinking, and having a good time. They are not forced to go with any man if they do not want to. Most of the guys these girls run into are just normal guys, lonely guys, regular guys.....

    • @danielk2035
      @danielk2035 Před 8 lety +7

Do you know why the girls are hiding their faces from the camera in many of the youtube videos? Because they don't want their boyfriends aka foreign "sponsors" who send them money every month to keep out of the bars to see that they are still working in the bars

Just remember that helping just a few people can have profound effects and ripples out like a stone being thrown in water. You never know how those small acts will grow. You both are blessed with this opportunity and I'm so excited to see what the future has in store for you on your travels.

This video came up as a "recommended" video and this is the first time I've seen it. I watched a few minutes then scrolled down and read Nate's comments regarded the hate and negativity that's being lobbed at them. I went back and watched the entire video, expecting to see something that would anger people but I'm stumped. What in the heck are people so mad at? Has the entire world gotten so vulgar and perverted that we can't even discuss decency and morality in a civilized manner anymore?

This is so near and dear to my heart. Having adopted our 5 kids from another country known for being a hub of sex tourism, and them being directly affected by that, I am appalled that anyone could say anything but GOOD about this video. I'm just now watching from the beginning, and read Nate's reply from four years ago. Guys...I'm so glad you did this, and I'm so glad you left it up. Unbelievable that anyone would think to leave any kind of negative comment on this video! Why? How? It just boggles my mind! Here you have an organization trying (and succeeding) to help young girls in terrible situations and you have these two young, selfless Americans who happen to know one of the owners of the organization and they're using their platform to tell everyone about it. I thought it was a beautiful and noble thing. Some people have issues with things no matter WHAT you do! Take heart, Kara and Nate, you did a good thing. Don't let anyone tell you any different.

The primary memory I have was seeing OLD men (primarily from Russia, other eastern block countries, America & Australia) preying on VERY young girls & boys. Wow, what a stunning amount of negativity. It's just more proof of the polarizing nature that, sadly, is our world today. Everyone is an expert on everything, and the most vitriolic of those are not above spewing hatred in an attempt to make their inane logic heard.
Kara and Nate, I think what you did was perfectly fine. You are helping friends helping girls that are in a terrible situation. If these girls are making a better lives for themselves, who is it for ANYONE to judge or criticize those that are assisting them with that goal? If these haters took half a moment to put themselves in someone else's shoes, to think beyond their tunnel vision, they might actually learn something.

Woah did not expect to see so much hate when I scrolled down to the comments.
I honestly don't know much about this particular problem in Bangkok until you guys highlighted it in this video and I thank you for showing this side of Bangkok. I see your heart in trying to address this issue and also applaud Home of New Beginnings for doing what they do and giving the girls another option to raise money for their families.
The one opinion I don't understand is the one which claims that the girls WANT to be prostitutes and they ENJOY their job. //Start rant// Um I'd understand if they wanted this job at first because to them initially, it gives the most amount of money which they send back home to provide for their families. If they really wanted to continue working as a prostitute and that they enjoyed it tremendously, I doubt there was anything that the Home of New Beginnings people could do to get them off the streets.
What they did was to offer them another option of earning money. And those who didn't truly want to work as a prostitute could take it, educate themselves and see that, "Oh! I can actually do something else which makes me much happier and I can send money back home too!" A win-win in my opinion. //End rant//
I hope these negative comments doesn't influence you guys in any to stop doing these types of videos. By vlogging, you guys have this amazing opportunity to share these types of issues in this broken world to other people (like me). So thank you once again and continue to do what God has placed in your hearts!

Your correct not all like there job i worked for a large corporation for 25 years never liked it and liked it less every year but it was a job very few people get to do a job they love, but these girls are on a pay scale equivalent too a doctor or lawyer in Thailand.
4 years ago im sitting in a bar in the Philippines talking to an expat working as the manager there, in walks a group he looks at them rolls his eyes they were a group very similar to the one in this video. They brought down two girls that i new very well, over the course of a week they had convinced one of them too leave with them to go too school they would support her and her child. Jump up to now a few month after finishing her college course she is back in the bar pissed off on all the money she did not earn and now is 4 years older and in her mind cant earn like she used too.
Now the second girl they were not interested in her why I asked her, because she all ready had a college degree and was smart and kept asking questions what happens after, so they left her alone. She loved her job loved sex but did not want to do it because every one where she lived looked down on her which meant she could not do it where she was from and was separated from her daughter but loved her job.
Kara and Nate needed to spend months there do there own investigations there is a lot of trafficking going on there but not in the bars for tourists, the brothels set up for local guys is where the abuse and trafficking takes place and these groups do very little for those girls because there would be reprisals if they did.

Wow- a part of travelling is so that you become aware of culture, and perspectives and see how the world lives- both the good and the bad. This requires you to see things with eyes wide open; this is all about being a global citizen and responding like-wise which includes advocating for those who cannot advocate for themselves. I know my comment is many years later, but you both are doing a wonderful job of being respectful and also showing your humanity to others. Keep going xx

K&N, I'm really sorry about the response you got from so many people. It's amazing that they look only at the money they make, and don't stop to think about the lifestyle they're living, as well as the fact that your friends don't go out and kidnap these girls to force them out of this lifestyle. Rather, they voluntarily come to them because they're sick of it, and up until they arrive, they've felt stuck on a treadmill with no way off.

I love how you both bring awareness and are genuinely concern for ppl. I love how you dedicate some of your vlogs to awareness on different subjects. I love how kind and respectful of traditions and how self aware you both are. There are always going to be hateful ignorant people who think commenting angry ugly stuff makes them feel important when in reality it’s just self reflection. I just wanted to add a positive comment because there are so many bad ones. Nope, you can't change the whole world. That's ok, just do the part given to you. There may be some girls who choose that life, but there are also some that don't. There will be help for the girls who want it. I think it's great what you've done to help your friends.

I just started covid binge watching your channel from the beginning. I love that you brought light to this issue and did not glaze over it like every other tourist vlog. I had hoped to travel to bangkok after covid, but I'm a solo traveling female. Would you say it is too unsafe to solo travel Thailand? Maybe from Kara's perspective of if she had been without Nate?
Also I would love an update (if there is not already one) on how their operation is going. :-)

Thailand is really safe as a solo female traveler! Thailand is one of the biggest backpacker destinations for a reason ;) I must say I felt safer in the islands of Thailand than in Bangkok but that is just because it’s a big overwhelming city. As long as you are smart, don’t go flashing around with important belongings and radiate confidence you are fine 😄

Thank you so much for posting this! I know it's not your normal fare, but this is just such a serious issue! I have seen a few videos of the sex trade in Thailand and Cambodia because I am looking for videos of Laos where I plan to visit in a year or so. As a single guy I made a conscious decision not to visit Thailand knowing what people might think. But the stories of the girls there have broken my heart. I plan on donating to save them soon! I know a guy who has gone to Thailand a few times for the sex, but I seriously don't think he understands that it is not an easy choice for them, or sometimes not even a choice at all. they are sold, and trapped into a horrific life! So heartbreaking!

First you guys are great and I think this vid is very informative. Second I honestly can’t understand why would someone be so negative about this video when actually a normal person would encourage you guys to do more videos like this and even they would be inspired to make vids like this in their countries, yes Thailand is not the only country that’s screwed up, pretty much the whole world is chaos right now, but maybe if more people would raise awareness in different countries with different social problems, maybe they would be contributing and do their part to make a better world, instead of sitting in front of their computers giving negative messages being ignorants. Anyway This is a great video again keep the good work guys :).
