  • I realized that I never really talked about how the various tank tech trees in War Thunder play, mostly just about vehicles Gaijin could add to them. Since a lot of you guys are relatively new to the game or are just starting out, it was a no-brainer to make this video.

You forgot to mention one of the biggest factors in gameplay!
      THE TEAM
when playing germany for example the team mostly will be horrifying, since a lot of new players expect germany to be automatically op.
On the other hand, only someone who already mastered the game would actually try to play italy and therefore your team will be better on average.
(This does not work for lower tiers though because pretty much anyone can access them)

  • @cheesecakedoublepeanutbutt6511

I started with Germany, and I must say...I don't recommend it as a new player's first tech tree.
As stated in the video, German tech tree encourages passive playstyle, and that can cause you to form a lot of bad habits. Personally I know nothing other than sit back and snipe until I get Leopard I, and I suddenly realize I don't know how to move around the map, and don't know how to aim for weak spots. Then I went back and played a lot of US and Russia, and finally learnt those skills.
Germany has some of the best tanks for sure, but it also tends to make new players one-trick pony, especially when your team needs to push and capture, and you realize everyone is in a Tiger II sitting near the spawn.

    • @babyboijeremy

I agree with this so much. I main germany and it had its ups and downs. Getting uptierd facing cold war tanks with stabilizers, ALWAYS gettibg flanked by a fking m18 cancer machine.
But that was bearable, because the tiger tanks are good tanks, jt just depends what you face. It was only after i got the leopard 1 that i quit the game for almost a year.
You grind for so long in a decently armoured heavy tank, just to get pushed over into a glass cannon medium tank. If you arent s pro, dont know good map placements etc. You will simply cease to exist every match. I comeback and quickly realize why i left. Now i cant even go back to my comfort zone. The tiger 105 is 15k sl repair cost PER DEATH. Fk. As a f2p player that is not sustainable. I just get back to grinding japanese or british air to keep my sanity. The lack of good german light tanks means most german teams all play the same. Its a stupid cycle.

I have noticed that sometimes leopard players defintly use its mobility to die faster. However there are no other choises but to struggle until all that map knowledge, positioning, movement etc is relearned. Good thing is enemy always points out your mistakes. With their gun that is.

i've been playing for awhile (French and Russia being my mains) but from introducing new players to the game my biggest regrets was recommending Germany as a starting nation. Because of how consistently good the tanks were many of the new players i introduced developed bad habits and ended up being spoiled by the German Big cats. This usually led the to struggle when trying to pick up a second tech tree as they were simply not used to having average to sub par vehicles and would always either quit or fall back to only playing Germany.

For a new player I wouldn’t recommend GB purely because of the repairs costs associated with the 7.0-8.0 range. Dying once in a fully loaded Caernarvon is almost as expensive as dying in every vehicle in the (stock, I don’t have them) German 7.3 lineup. And if you get clapped in spawn by air or while slowly heading back into battle with a Cent or FV, the cost can slowly bankrupt a free player. I do love the Crusader 3 and a few other of their low tier vehicles such as the firefly and the peculiar archer though, but long term I feel GB can be a painful experience.

      @DerAlleinTiger Před rokem +9

@@michaelfick5086 Meanwhile, I never felt more pain in the US tree than 5.7, but I had an absolute blast in US low tiers. When everyone is so squishy, having that mobility and good gun handling makes you a god among men even in the humble M2, and anything with a .50 on a pintle is death incarnate for those low tier tanks. All of that becomes a lot less relevant when you have panthers and tigers facing Shermans with 75's. Flanking is great and all... until you find 3 more panthers on that flank. Flanking is a great strategy in theory for the US when you're facing a lone panther or tiger, but not so much when you're facing 3 tigers and 4 panthers all covering each other (not intentionally, of course, but by sheer coincidence with German mains). It was only at 6.0 with the Walker-Bulldog that I saw the light at the end of the tunnel that was 5.0-5.7 US. I am still glad I started with them, even if 5.0 made me a German main through its sheer frustration and pain, because it makes me truly appreciate the power that other factions have at that same tier, and made me generally more cautious and fight smarter even when I don't *have* to in something like German tanks.
As a side note, Italy low tier has also been super fun to me, probably because it's kind of like low tier US but taken to the extreme of high mobility.

I have played the entirety of Italy, owning every tank air aircraft (besides the c13 because I have not played much this update) and I can confidently say that if you want a nation to grind you should choose any other nation. Italy isn't awful, and there's a lot of fun lineups and vehicles, but they are definitely an afterthought for the devs.
starting with low tier, the sevomentes are alright, and the line ups are quite diverse, in this area it feels kinda like china or japan with mashup lineups of domestic and foreign tanks, there are also some real gems too such as the Breda 501, cas is limited, the fc20 bis is cool but not the most effective, and you get a ju87 as well but IMO the best bet is getting the iar81c with the german rockets and the 250kg bomb, the hs129 with them 30mm, or the bf110 with its bombs depending on what you like. overall a decent experience but nothing to write home about.
At mid-tier Italy starts to have its own I identity. this is where you start to see interesting stuff like the recoilless cars and the aubl74 you do also get the m26 and m47 to round out your line up with an actual tank atleast. once again you are out of luck for cas though, the re2005 gets a 500kg bomb but costs an arm and a leg to repair, and there really isn't anything else in the TT that you can use, so stick with the previously mentioned low tier aircraft but don't rely on them. the of40 is a very versatile tank, good gun handling, and mobility and a very stable and predictable tank. feels very nice to use and the optics are amazing.
top tier is where stuff becomes massively depressing, let me break it down:
    MBT
The arietes simply do not compete. sure you can do well in them but in general, you will be slower, softer, and easier to kill than most any other MBT. the round it get's is good enough, it has one of the highest masses of any APFSDS in the game so it's spalling is amazing and 1-2 shots are all you will really ever need, but the pen that used to be amazing has gone though a nerf and power creep as better armor is added to the game.
    Centauros
The centauros are stunning, the presieres gets decent APFSDS and gen 1 thermals at 8.7 and is very mobile for the tier it's a must use, the romor is not quite as good but it pairs well with the leo 1a5, that add on armor makes it noticeably more sluggish but you can still outpace most people especially on favorable terrain, the Centauro 120 is the star of your top tier line up, same heavy APFSDS as the ariete but now it's parred with a 6.5-5 second reload (depending on crew skill) giving you at least that advantage, as you sacrifice almost all protection form anything more than light autocannons for a higher top speed, allowing you to move around favorable terrain and outflank most MBTs. you get the same turms fire control as the ariete, so the optics are quite nice too, gen2 thermals for the gunner and commander, definitely get this vehicle if you want to play Italian top tier.
    SPAA
The otomatic is given this god-tier status in-game, but in reality, is much more disappointing, it's a lumbering, massive target with no armor that is ready to blow up if you sneeze too hard. the he-vt is nice but good luck hitting anything past 4-5km as it has terrible accuracy and an insanely long time to target, SAP is funny vs light tanks and that's about it, the APFSDS has lackluster pen and hardly does any post pen damage and you only get 12 rounds, enough to defend yourself vs 2-4 MBTs depending on how good your aim and luck is. the mistal simply is there, I haven't used it much but I've heard it's alright. at 8.3 the base sidam is dog shit compared to other spaa tbh.
The shining light at the end of the tunnel
The dardo is truly a god amongst mere IFVs, one of the best in the game with amazing mobility, a high ROF APFSDS slinging autocannon, and tow2Bs. 10/10 best tank in the tree IMO.
    CAS
premium r/4 exists if you wanna buy that. 4 nords and IDK how they are after the nerf. You have 2 f104s to choose from with dumb bombs and no guided weapons. the YS gets 2 drops of bombs as well. once again the case is bad, easily the worst of any nation at the top tier IMO. your best option is 8k GE so pay up.
you do get helis at least. The a129CBT has a funny name and is one of the best flying helis of its class IMO. the 20mm makes minced meat of tanks from the top and can protect you from plans that get too close. if you want to take 8 hellfires you will not get to bring AAMs. good enough I guess but gaijin could easily add better.
overall I say avoid Italy for now. The tree doesn't have a lot to offer and additions are typically sparse and/or uninteresting. France will give you a similar feeling while being much more meta.

    • @braedenh4687
      @braedenh4687 Před rokem +1

With the lowest tier, you can avoid everything except the 20mms and the AS42/47. They used to have 64mm of penetration, probably still did when your comment was posted. You could reliably kill literally anything even at a max uptier except for the b1 bis. Now it’s a lot more painful, what with the 16mm of penetration loss, but most things can be taken out with the standard AS42 still. I’m at 8.3, but I mostly play 1.3/1.7 bc i actually have fun with it and have a lot of friends who are very new to ground who play other nations at 1.3. All in all, in my opinion, 1.3 has been the best experience I’ve ever had with Italy.

L3 is literally the best tank in the whole game. When a panther player sees an L3 coming at him at 20 km/h he shits himself. Every panther players biggest nightmare is those 10 Perforante mod.35 APHE rounds. Legends say that 1 of those rounds can penetrate a maus frontally. If an L3 somehow manages to get penetrated by an enemy shell it just bounces off of the massive balls those 2 crew members have. I have played L3 in high tiers and let me tell you the enemy is scared of shooting at you. Because of thoose massive balls rounds will bounce right back at the enemy. Killing them instantly.

I started with the US and I’d personally recommend it. The US tanks are very well rounded and do have good guns. US shells are also some of the best, with the APHE for many tanks being able to one shot many enemies. The US planes can be difficult to use in the mid tier levels, as you don’t get cannons with large amounts of explosive filler, but you get APIT belts which set everything on fire, which I actually prefer. I suggest using US ships first, because they are very well rounded. The US destroyers are arguably the best as they have Dual purpose guns with VT shells and high rates of fire. The US cruisers are also solid and have the 5in guns as secondaries. The PT boats are also fast and well armed.

It is true that grinding is pain in all tiers and tech trees, however when struggling one should not try to proggess to next br asap. The struggle means that one has not acquired the required skills for that br and those are definetly needed in the next ones. If you skip a br without learning to perform well, you will have "REALLY bad time" in the next +1.0 br increase instead of just "bad time". This is especially true for br 7.0 / 8.0 / 9.0 / 10.0 around where the gameplay changes dramatically.

For the record, Gaijin considers Britain one of the big 4 nations, and they do have a fairly big tech tree, especially now they added the south africa stuff.
As for how fun it is to play... well I've played few tech trees by now but unironically Britain does suffer. The vast majority of vehicles are over tiered, and I consistently perform worse as Britain than any other nation.
Even their areas where they used to be good (centurions around 7 ish br's) have since been heavily uptiered, and thats after gaijin boosted their repair costs to make them virtually unplayable, even with a premium account. Given this isn't just one vehicle, but basically entire BR brackets, it's probably some of the worst repair cost experience in the game.
All that aside though, if you're a veteran their ww2 era stuff can be very enjoyable. A lot of British vehicles have high skill ceilings due to quirks of the design giving them unique play styles. Even the poor post-pen on most British rounds can be enjoyable as it forces you to play smarter with your aiming.

    Some tips for new players:
Do not trust your armor. Very few tanks can boast having competent armor for bouncing and can be trusted, and that is usually when they are downtiered. It is better to just assume almost every tank can pen you and play carefully.
No armor is best armor. For people who do not know why we say this, it is because APHE rounds and others generally have a fuse sensitivity, it has to go through so much armor before it can fuse. With no armor, it will just go through and through and not detonate helping to keep you alive, but in the same vain, MG's will slaughter you especially .50cal.
Learn your map positions. This is what I would say is KEY to having good high kill matches. Know where to sit, which way the enemy is coming, and how to reach good locations safely, especially if you are playing a slow tank. Some positions are absolutely key in certain matches, and for fast tanks, can abuse some locations really well.
Know enemy weak spots, and your own. In shooting, knowing where to hit and where to not is going to save you, and if you don't think you can pen, shooting out the gun is always viable as it can either buy you time, or help guarantee side shots. Just be careful of multi-gun tanks. For your own, know where you can be easily pened and do your best to either cover or hide them as some hits are survivable if they hit certain areas. If your entire tank is a weak spot, light tanks, just be aware that the first thing to hit you will probably kill you.
Know your ammo and how much to bring. Know how your ammo works, luckily the small videos help but know when to use certain ammos types and what not to bring. Also knowing how much to bring, different tanks have different load outs and bringing full racks is almost always ill advised. Exceptions can be made for some tanks with low ammo counts or fast firing but otherwise just be careful of how much you bring and know where it is stored in your tank.
Parts and Fire Prevention Equipment(FPE). For gods sake get these first, if you don't know why, you soon will.
Bombs incoming. The planes will come, the bombs will kill you, and you will get strafed, get ready for revenge killing and pray you have some competent planes or AA to keep you alive and the skies free.
The uptier. You will get this, and you will get it OFTEN. Be ready and figure out when you have been uptiered. I always tend to assume uptier and it has worked out for me so far.
The crew skills. Generally I think it is dependent on the player except for three. Targeting, Weapon Reloading, and Vitality in that order. I think these three are THE most important and should be leveled up first. Others have their own preferences but those are mine. I would recommend Targeting to 3 before anything else.
The modifications. Outside of Parts and FPE, it comes down to the tank and preference. Better ammo I believe should always be priority, if not, I would recommend going for Horizontal Drive and Elevation Mechanism first. Besides gunning for those, your choice, though for fast light tanks I would HIGHLY recommend ramping up the Mobility quick.
The left turret face or the right? Know which side of the tank the enemy gunner is. If you are front on shooting at the turret, taking out the gunner is essential and knowing which side can be the difference between getting a kill, and getting killed.
I'm sure there are more and others can fill in the spaces but this is my SHORT list. Hope this helps!

In addition to your points I would add:
The main plus of US vehicles is that they less sensitive to which map you get (adaptive). Also, there are often several tanks of similar design, weapons and play style to choose from, which lends your lineups some redundancy (Stewarts, Shermans etc). The Ma Deuce (50 cal) is a lifesaver too.
The main plus of GE vehicles is that you can field a solid lineup with each vehicle type at most BRs that are also close in BR (e.g., a heavy, medium and light tank, plus a TD and SPAA). This depth allows you nice range of vehicle options for the map or enemy team you face.
The main plus of RU vehicles is that you often have multiple versions of the same vehicle at similar BRs, which allows you to keep returning to the battle in basically the same vehicle (T-34s, KVs). When that vehicle works well with the map and enemy you face this can crush your opponent who often have to change vehicle type or take out a vehicle of lower BR when they respawn only to face your terminator like return.
A problem with other nations is that tree gaps mean your lineups either have a large range of BRs, a limited variety of vehicle types, or both. This makes your lineup very map dependent and respawns quickly degrade your effectiveness.

As someone who started his ground tech trees with Britain I must say that the lack of APBC really isn't that big a problem. At the lowest tiers (rank 1) they do get APBC and the tanks themselves aren't half bad. At 3.7+ you often get the 17 pounder which penetrates everything and has very good post pen for a solid shot. The APDS at the mid-high tiers is alright, can definitely be annoying when ammo doesn't ignite or one crew or component slurps it all up but it usually just works. And I never reached British top tier because I really don't like British 7.7 and above, it's usually slow tanks who's armor is basically useless at the tiers it's faces. The stabilizer can make up for it but that doesn't matter if a flanker shoots your side for 1 km away when you haven't even gotten to any point yet.

Something thats worth noting about GB is that their consistent stabilizers teach bad habits mobility wise, but the tree teaches excellent aiming habits, especially around the 7.0 range. If you aim properly, you can usually take a tank out in one shot, but if you aim poorly you can send the round clear through the tank while dealing no damage.

For the German tech tree (which I main and started with): Youre totally right about the "passive" playstyle. Either heavy tanks that are slow and therefore no use in capping but sniping with big guns or Main Battle Tanks with great guns and mobility but no armor so no use to go into CQB :D

I want to give my 2 cents on this, germany is actually quite good, but becomes utter pain at around 6.3-6.7 purely because the vehicles are so utterly massive and pure plane/heat food, so they can be incredibly frustrating at times.
Sweden is incredibly easy at lower tiers, the reserve tanks sabo for gods sake, and perform way too well even in higher tiers, and do i even need to mention the Delat Törn? But after that, they are quite painful.
China is utterly brilliant, they get very capable soviet and american vehicles and are in my experience very competetive up until the Type 59, the tank itself is not awful or anything, but it has no business facing thermals when itself dosen't even get infrared... or powered turret traverse.
Overall i think China might actually be the best starting tech tree, because it has such varied gameplay due to the presence of American and Soviet vehicles, and also the ZBD-86 is bae, it can pen the front turret of a T-80U in my experience fighting in 1v1 with my friend

Even at later tiers they can 1 shot most tanks, decent mobility and speed but aluminium armor that can't even take the weakest of machine gun rounds. Although I feel like they lack spaa types and the repair costs that they've recently received at higher tiers have made them unplayable I mean even for planes the sagettario now has only 3mm pen explosive rounds and has a 40k repair cost. I experimented a bit here and there with the 1.0s of each nation and eventually decided to go with Sweden... just because I like the Strv 103. Even though I'm aware that WT does not model its hull aiming very accurately. Not even on purpose, hull aiming is just so rare that they would have to put a lot more effort into making basically one tank more accurate. Regardless, I find Sweden to not be so bad once you get a number of the Good ones, like the Strv m/42 EH and DT, the Lago I, the AA truck is suprisingly powerful, and several others on the list. I'm still new to the game generally, but I find sweden's lineup pretty good for the most part. Weirdly easy to destroy, but it did teach me good positioning and better tactics. "Any shot can kill me, so always be mindful of my surroundings, and go to places where I'm less likely to get shot first." It's not terrible for beginners imo.

Mid tier is a pain and joy rollecoaster, requires patience, the lack of APHE is almost compensated with APDS, mobility is decent to poor, but 76.2mm guns pack a nice punch when you learn where to aim, same with the 83.4 mm guns. By this time im commenting, far i've reached are the Centurion Mk 10 and the Ratel 20, the british 105 mm gun is delightful to use, HESH is a little tricky but does the job against light armor.
