Liverpool picked up a 1-1 draw with Manchester City at the weekend, in a smart looking performance that continued their solid start to the season.
Few teams come away from the Etihad with a result, so are Jurgen Klopp’s side back to their best following a slow campaign last season?
JJ Bull and Jon Mackenzie take a look at their performance against Manchester City and their wider chances for Premier League success this season.

I think drawing inferences from the data yielded from the season so far can be misleading for several reasons for Liverpool this year in comparison to other teams. The main issues are: 1. Liverpool have spent around a quarter of their games this year being reduced to 10 men, this undoubtedly has skewed the figures. 2. Liverpool have now played 5 of the top 10 teams away from home (Chelsea, Newcastle, Spurs, Brighton and City) this is much much more than any other team and in these games possession stats are more likely to favour the home side. These two factors give the impression of Liverpool ceding more possession and being more counter attacking. I would argue that it probably won’t be until the midway point of the season you will get a more balanced picture of where Liverpool are at tactically. The sample size here is too skewed to draw conclusions from.

Joel Matip is and has been the most underrated CB in the world for years. His ability in the air is unmatched. His passing range is great. Usually very well positioned. Can make long, line breaking passes. And finally, his dribbling into the opposition is absolutely world class. Even against a team like City, he stormed through their midfield with ease that one time and it almost led to a goal.
What a player. I really want him to stay longer beause his CB partnership with Virgil is one of the best in the world and better than Konate and VVD imo but sadly, he may be at the end of his LFC career.. ❤

He has 3 years more, he is getting less injury layoffs, and the fact that he was so stop and go in the last six years, and missed many games will actually help him in the longevity at the highest level. I think Klopp will have to accept at some point that he should be number two. If it wasn't for VVD'S captaincy I personally would have him as a serious contender for number 1.

Klopp is using substitutes in a more judicious manner than he has done in the past. Elliott and Darwin and recently Gravenberch are changing the game when they come on. The way they set up at the 60 minutes mark in many games seems to suggest they want teams to be on the front foot, with many opposition players in their own half so that they can spring attacks with Elliott as spearhead.

I think we need to take Liverpool’s pressing with a grain of salt at the moment because we’ve played with 10 men and even 9 men on different occasions this season. When you play with less players, you tend to sit back and prioritise compactness rather than pressing. So that’s one of the reasons why Liverpool have “allowed” teams to progress the ball more this season. In the moments where we do play with 11 men, the pressing does seem less intense as previously but again the data shown here is skewed.

  • @JawlessToaster

The funny thing about the arsenal Liverpool comparison towards the end there is we’ve only conceded 1 more goal than arsenal who have conceded the least in the league. So we seem okay defensively even with the extra risk on the way we are playing. Seems Klopp is happy counting on Alisson being as elite as he is. But we saw at city he can have bad days. Great Video! This season Liverpool will continue shocking everyone tactically because they've evolved without necessarily transitioning. This is to say, they are very adaptable to in-game situations. If you look at that Goal Vs City, it had to be Gakpo, taking out Bernado for Trent to get the space. Mind you, Pep had set Bernado on Trent for this whole Game, then mind you, Gakpo is used by Klopp as an 8 too for space creation, as he did with Firmino, then you have Trent's Profile, also versatile! They have been practicing this Trent thing since preason, I remember the Bayern preseason game in Singapore where he was literally a 6 coz Jones - in the same game- did not release passes as a 6 should , Jones is a ball carrier. Then , even with the Reds this season, Szoboszlai has been used as a distributor and facilitator to help MacAllister depending on the wave of the game. Guardiola is just too samrt, setting up the way he did insured his game, if he leaves the midfield for Liverpool, Kloop Gangs it up in the second half with new-player profiles : Gakpo, Gravenberch, Eliot, & Trent. Pep is clever. Otherwise, Liverpool Today cannot be comprehended tactically at all. At Spurs Gakpo was the false 8, after the 1st red they were still too stable because Szoboszlai moved in as a facilitator, literally what Jones does so well.

Nah there's still issues, but we're moving in the right direcition, I mean we're still only 1 point off City and 2 points off the top and we'd be 1st if it wasn't for that robbery against Spurs.
To me the biggest issue is that due to our constant changing front 3 (which is also good because we have better depth than during the Mane-Firmino-Salah era) we lack chemistry up front which also affects our chance output. For example Gakpo plays more of a false 9 creating space and link play, which gives Salah space to run into. Jota plays more like a poacher which forces Salah to stay more wide due to Jota sitting in the central areas and Trent coming into midfield on the right. Nunez does sort of both, but also interchanges with Salah at times. It seems like Klopp still hasn't found his best front 3, or he changes them based on opposition. But I feel like Nunez and Salah together doesn't really fit, as they both look to score from central areas. This was never an issue as Firmino always dropped deep to give Mane and Salah space to run into central areas

So the team has become quickly new look n it appears it suits Klopp immensely as it is easier to groom n control newbies n quite remarkably are not letting the strain of injuries n lay offs to be felt, by much. What is strange as well appreciable is that this new look Liverpool is indeed playing or has played below par or badly but is winning both home n away from situations when most other teams would crumble. Its a highly intrepid n courageous bunch that is not playing or is too technically endowed but is putting n executing their plans better than most teams. I would rather put Endo or Stefan in the six position or even reinvent Trent Alexander-Arnold as a six. Alternatively, Andre could be a potential final missing piece for us. So far the integrity of the system and formation has been good enough to win games, but this is the extra thing that can take us to the next level. Darwin is an absolute weapon but I would be more intrigued to play Gakpo as either a winger or false nine. Sometimes we look at Klopp and think he makes weird substitutions and selections but we ultimately see a good end result because he trusts his players and most of the time they deliver for him. I just hope we use Gakpo more not in midfield because I think that with some playtime he'll start producing very good numbers for us. Trusting in Darwin could eventually result in clinical finishing but he is hot headed and not the brightest so he can be a liability as much as he is an asset.

interesting stats which actually confirm a lot of what I have been seeing on the pitch for Liverpool. I would say though that Klopp relies more on his back line than his forward line. Matip is having an outstanding season so far, in fact in terms of defensive solidity and his brilliant runs from deep, he is probably more instrumental than VD in Liverpool's best start to the season since the 80's.
Breaking the lines from deep is risky, but less so if you are set up for it and have Matip & Van Djik in your side. It allows quick attacks to form through a transitional opposition and allows the ball carriers that have been purchased, Gravenberch (what a steal!!), Diaz, Sobo and MacAlister to do their thing and it is working like a dream. Great shout out to Pep Linders there, (LFC manager in waiting). Great video lads.

Really good stuff as always lads.
I think having the dual midfield presses further exposes Mac as the lone 6 when countered. He may well learn the role and be able to do a Thiago role effectively when he has done the lone role. Not a 10 out of 10, but a consistent 7 defensively. But what an athletic DM would do for this side...
Bajcetic injuries woes haven't helped neither as he looked set for a massive season this season, but reinjured himself a few weeks ago, of course.
Not a knock on Tsmikas and especially Matip, but things will improve further with Konate/Gomez and Robertson back too in regards to combating a lot issues.
Liverpool are nearly there, but given the form and position they find themselves in, they are 6-12 months ahead of their trajectory.

The thing I hate about this system is that we’re playing salah as a touch line winger. HE NEEDS TO BE AN INSIDE FORWARD. And we never properly replaced mane. Diaz is a completely different player. We would have been better off signing someone like doku or leao. And I feel like the team doesn’t exactly know what they are doing either. Players will sometimes make the same run as each other and run into each other etc. where as back in 2017 we were much more free flowing attacking wise and then sorted the defence with Ali,virg and fab. Still a long way to go but we need to just keep grinding out these results

I take issue with the contention that Salah is playing as a forward or striker and not a winger. I think his heat map is much closer to the touch line (even more so as he's aging) than the likes of Ronaldo when he was playing as a winger. I think we assume that he's playing like a forward because he's scoring crazy goals, but what I think is really happening is just that he is becoming insanely efficient with his attacking runs.

Man city also did very well to shut down Salah, they always had strong defenders to get him off balance. Macallister needs to play further up ideally, Endo is not an ideal first choice and that's still why I'm not all that optimistic.

Also we need to think of the RB problem , either you play a flat back 4 with a proper RB who can defend and put TAA with Alexis as a double pivot or get 2 CB for either side of VVD , Matip does good but his injury record , speed and expiring contract is a liability , then Robbo is a full back not a 3rd CB .

Liverpool at the height of 1.0 with a Henderson, Wijnaldum and Fabinho midfield 3, and Firmino frequently dropping deep to as a False-9 or extra midfielder. This is a simpler setup where pressing, and winning the ball in midfield is the main objective of the midfield. In possession, the Fullbacks Trent and Robbo, provide ball progression and width. Again, it is a simpler setup, often leading to a front-5 in attack.
Liverpool 2.0 has a different midfield. More technical players, more ball-carriers. Gravenberch and Szoboszlai in particular are very good ball-carriers. MacAllister is a better passer than Fabinho, although Fab is the better destroyer. But it is a more complex setup with Trent inverting, and Nunez not as clever as Firmino. I think Klopp is still evolving his team, and it is more adaptable depending on whether they are playing low-block teams vs possession teams. Still a work in progress. Szoboszlai and Graven berch are not up to full speed yet. As are Diaz, Nunez. More to come.

Notice there's almost ZERO progression in the opposition box. More progression down the sides, but we are stuffing the box with 8 guys whenever it gets ugly. The front isn't attacking nearly as much against better teams. I think it's all by design to encourage the counter, instead of the counter press, since Nunez and Salah have the pace. And Trent is the best offensive 6 in the biz.
You really saw it in the first few matches, but teams are getting wise to it. Luton never bit. Bournemouth couldn't stop biting. City thinks they can play through anything, and they're mostly right, but this approach more or less worked against them. Virgil fell asleep for one moment, otherwise our CB vs Haaland scheme worked.

For me Liverpool wont finisg higher than 3rd until they sign an actual DM who can cover ground and spaces, anticipates direction of play and is able to destroy opposition attacks. Alexis MacAllister isnt that, hes a defensive #8 and therefore is doing a serviceable job in the #6 but they will be found out more times than not if they dont address this in the January TW. The ideal player for them is Palhinha from Fulham, profiles just like Fabinho and doesnt have miles of minutes in his legs over his career. However, until they do this then they will concede more big chances and now that Alison is injured and not there to bail them out, these will make the difference in them challenging and them being a decent team in 3rd

  • @eye1.618
    @eye1.618 Před 5 měsíci

IMO, should have made Trent the #6 - can offer some defense, be a Regista, make late attacking runs, and then play a proper defensive minded RB (ex. Gomez). The inverted RB to MF leaves the flank wide open to counters. MACA good player, but not defensive minded, undersized, not strong to be #6. The positive results are because there's plenty of fire power with the 8s and front line
