It's time to end the tyranny of petty bureaucrats in councils and I'm the man to do it.

- Here in Tokoroa, New Zealand, a 70 year-old man with Parkinson's must not be allowed to fly his RC planes and drones at the local flying field (as he has done, safely, for almost 20 years without incident) so the local council has deliberately chosen to mis-interpret the aviation regulations in order to make his life hell. Is it time to hold these petty bureaucrats and politicians to account?

Clearly this allows people to fly under "direct supervision" regardless of any memberships or qualifications they may/may not have. The SWDC says otherwise and refuses to acknowledge they are wrong.

One thing to consider is to not only sue the council entity, but also to sue the individual counselors personally. They are all covered by tax payer funded indemnity insurance so even if they loose, it doesn't cost them anything other than face.. Suing them personally will cost them personally!

I'm a councillor in the UK. They should be ashamed of themselves.
If you are a councillor, maybee you should be aware that most things have 2 sides. At least 2 sides.
And that there might be more to this ? Maybee the local government have a reason, that might even be valid?
I don't know. I only watch maybee one in 20 of Mr S videos these days. But I do know he has flown a plane into the tower on purpose. Destroyed a battery on the grass, at the airfield I belive, so that it caught fire. Again on purpose.
Far from recently. But again I don't know what he have been doing lately.
No mention in this video why they did this. Only insiniation that it was unfair, or even without reason.
When people present a case strictly one-sided like that I think they might have something to hide.

The fact is many people cannot stand bureaucrats overstepping their authority and interfering in peoples' personsal lives, and I'm one of them, so count me in!
People in power don't like people who don't just blindly follow.
Bruce is one of the people who I followed when I started learning about RC modeling and is a pillar of the community.
To think that a bunch of people who know basically nothing about modeling decides to impede upon a person just out of spite is alarming to say the least.

It's hard to believe how the officialdom's opinion on model flying has universally changed since the 70's. Your ban situation is quite unbelievable given others can still fly within the formal regulations.

I absolutely support Bruce and his common sense approach to Model Aviation. He has gone to extraordinary links to ensure safety in operating these model aircraft. I hope the council reconsider in very short order.
People who work for the taxpayer need to realize who they work for. Public servants are to serve those who pay them, the people - not their own personal agendas. Give them hell Bruce!
Bruce is a good, honest, wholesome person. He doesn’t deserve to be struck down by anyone or anything for any reason. He has the best interest of all humans at heart which is all that matters. He only seeks to educate those who are in the process of hurting innocent people such as those in the rc flying community who mean no harm. They should be held accountable for their actions and so should the FAA for making MODEL aircraft nearly impossible for future pilots to exist.
I’m here in Western Australia but I’m down for $50. It’s getting nearly impossible to find places to fly and I don’t like clubs. I like venal local councils even less. $50 is a nominal sum. It’s much less than I spend on other things that are on the fun police radar - like motorcycles, and could be increased. If you decide to go you’ll be supported. You’re fighting the good fight for all of us. But I’m not wealthy. Offer stands!

I am with you Bruce. My local regional council in NZ has been developing along these sames lines and the madness needs to stop. We pay rates for the maintenance and development of our districts. I'm fully behind you Bruce. Losing the Tower can quite easily be shown as a waist of public money and a dent in the income of the local community. As your channel had made it a local landmark.. There is no legal reason why you shouldn't fly. You are just as safe as anyone. Infact, more safe as you created a device to make it even safer. They should be promoting you rather than embarrassing themselves with petty historical rivalry. They should be for the local community and encourage your channel. The local council in Bolsover England where I fly are very supportive of our club. They wanted to make a video of us but we had to decline as membership was full already. No way should you be grounded they have no grounds other than you ruffled a few public feathers.

Hi Bruce, I'm with you as well. I worked in Local Government for 35 years in Australia, and if the Aussy system is similar to yours then you may be able to take steps to avoid litigation even though it may not be possible in this case. You may be able to contact your Local Government Ombudsman (if he/her exists) and lodge a formal complaint against the Council. I know that Councillors & Mayors & Council Staff hate being investigated particularly when they have not followed the overarching laws which allows their Governance . Another alternative is to Contact the Local Government Ministers Office and ask this Office to intervene and lodge a probe into the Elected members (again if he/she exists in your government system). Finally you can always run for Office in the next election and try and turn the Council on it head. If you need cash to help with the legal case I'm in. Cheers & I hope things get better.
P.S. In Australia Councils controls only the ground space, it has little or no jurisdiction over the air space. This leaves you able to stand on the foot path of a road (take off & Land) and Fly over a park area, as you have not technically been in the Park... Also it may be the case that the Local Council is only the custodian of the park area and the park is actually owned by the State. You can thus try and bypass the Council and apply directly to the State Government for approval to fly. Just a thought. The Devil is in the detail, particularly when elected officials make rules with out reading the fine print of the underlying legislation.

I'm with you but your council won't give a damn about a lawsuit because they have lawyers already on the payroll. The only time they may put any thought into it is if it looks like they could lose a lot of taxpayer money in a settlement.
If these councillors have abused their positions and lied to make up regulations they MUST be sacked, simple as that.

SWDC needs to appreciate how far their notoriety has spread. I'm in Scotland, pretty much on the opposite side of the planet. They can't just reinterpret official rules to suit their own petty agendas.
Incidentally, I'm surprised the CAA hasn't already prosecuted the council over the white crosses fiasco - if a plane lands on the runway while cars are driving on it there could be dire consequences, such as fatalities, criminal proceedings, and litigation.

That council and all people in charge over the world have to be aware that they are not above the law.
They also need to be aware that the amateur model aviation is a sport/hobby/activity of public interest that stimulate people for the continuous improvement and involvement of more people in aviation activities.
Commercial drone activities and regulations can be tempting for legislators (licensings, taxes, etc., €, $, NZ $, allways the same greedy stuff...) but if people lose interest in the amateur path all commercial activities will also have impact on the future.
