- The Killer is a 1989 Hong Kong action and crime film directed and written by John Woo. The film stars Chow Yun-fat, Danny Lee, and Sally Yeh. Chow plays the assassin Ah Jong, who accidentally damages the eyes of the singer Jennie (Sally Yeh) during a shootout. He later discovers that if Jennie does not have an expensive operation soon, she will go blind. To get the money for Jennie, Ah Jong decides to perform one last hit. Meanwhile, the police detective Li (Danny Lee) who has been tracking Ah Jong for a long time, is determined to bring him to justice. The film's music was composed by Lowell Lo and edited by David Wu. The film became Woo's stepping stone to make Hollywood films and has been a strong influence on many directors, including Quentin Tarantino.

Sally Yeh was legendary in the 90s.... she sang so many theme songs for so many Hong Kong movies and dramas.... Hong Kong will never be able to recreate the glory of Cantonese entertainment industry of the 90s again

One of my favorite films of all time. In the USA this film has become very expensive (at least the Criterion Edition) I finally broke down this week and bought a cheap VHS copy of this film. I can’t wait to watch this again.
Saw it way back in school during the early 90's, and loved it back then, loved the song..Thumbs up if you saw this in the 90's and are seeing it again in 2014..been a long time.

It definitely is Chinese and the dialect is indeed Cantonese. I am 150% certain as I speak it.
Ironically I probably cry more watching this traditionally categorized action movie than I ever do at the dramas that legitimately try to tug your heartstrings.
The moment when they crawl past each other is heartbreaking and puts The Killer well above the more highly praised Hard Boiled.

Still a masterpiece! We need a Blu-Ray from this movie.
I have it on a Blu-Ray. It doesn't really look Blu-Ray quality, but I reckon the original film wasn't preserved. From what I understand, HK cinema was a bit of a Wild West in that era. Archival wasn't really a consideration.
It was the Dragon Dynasty release I believe. My only real complaint is the poor quality English "dubtitles". When Netflix had The Killer available, they had a much higher quality translation for their subtitles. The subs you get on the Dragon Dynasty Blu-Ray are just a transcript of the poor quality 80s dub.

The killer is the ideal and greatest form of action cinema. Any action movie in comparison only sounds and looks like cheap half finished sentences out of a dime novel. It is perfect and unchanging in such a way that transcends time and space. It is the action movie ideal to which all other cinema fails in comparison.

This is the real heart of Woo movies. People talk about the awesome action, but they're really earnest, almost schmaltzy stories about love, loyalty, family, friendship etc.
Woo imitators don't have the heartfelt elements that make you care when the shooting starts.
This movie, is why i've been in love with Chow Yun-Fat, for 15 years.
I just saw this masterpiece today and I can't beleive i haven't seen it before. Trully a work of art nd ahead of its time in tears of cinematography, action and acting truly a classic. Best action movie of all time , no wonder it was used as inspiration for John Wick film series.

Since then it made such a huge impact on me, unforgettable memory and return to mine childhood. I will never forget this movie 🎬, such a masterpiece. Actors are fenomenal, role-play magnificent, music in film unforgettable, it's in my ears Since then. I have no words to describe how much do I love this movie and Actors in it. Like said huge impact 😌 mix of action, drama and romance. They don't film anymore at present like at that time this movie was. Killer ❤❤❤

Best John Woo film ever. Has the most deep character development in any HK movie. I met Chow Yun Fat in the Scala cinema film Festival. And co star Danny Lee is my father's friend in HK and he taught me to drive when I was only 7 yrs old in a big car park and he took me to the HK film studio on a day tour..I called him Uncle Danny.
Been looking for this song since only God knows. Heard it first from the movie "the killer" and heard it also from this movie " the man with the iron fist" I recorded the scene in which the song was sang. So I got the title and the singer's name by using google voice..you don't know how happy I am now 😃
