    Wearing a helmet doesn't make you "dorky" it makes you a smart person for thinking of safety, I would never ride with out a helmet no matter how much I trust a horse you never know.

      It will help stop serious brain/head damage tho. Yeah it won't stop you from braking a leg, but I'd sooner brake a leg and not have a damaged head.

      Alayna Rossi so your saying that when I fell off, because my hors got his leg in a hole, head first, nothing more would have happened if I wasn't wearing a helmet? I got a mild concussion WITH the helmet on, I don't think I would have been that lucky without the helmet.

    • @alaynarossi2369
      @alaynarossi2369 Před 9 lety

      No thats not what I am saying. It depends in the accident. People have died WITH helmets on and without one. And I still think a helmet can not save you. Its fine if you disagree but this is my opinion.

      Alayna Rossi What I mean is, that i some cases, it can, in fact, save you! No, it won't stop your back from breaking, but it can stop your skull from cracking.

    My sister fell off a horse once and broke her neck. She had surgery and wore a collar for 3 months, within a year she working full time and had minimal problems from the accident. She wore a helmet. If she hadn't wore one, the doctor said she would have died instantly.
    You may never need it, you may never need the belt in your car either, but I guess most of you wear it anyway. Just in case something do happens, it can save your life, so can wearing a helmet while riding.

    What's people's problem about wearing a helmet? They're comfy, look smart and give you a sense of security - like shown on the video above. I can't imagine riding without one on. And that does NOT mean that I'm a bad rider.

    • @josiahigescu7840

      wouldnt the 'extra sense of security' be a bad thing? cos if you dont have that sense of security you'd think twice before doing things.... meaning your less likely to do something stupid... :P

      Josiah Igescu
      I disagree - a good rider tries his/her best to never fall - whether you're on a hack out in the forest or just doing some easy work in the indoor arena. A helmet shouldn't change the way you ride - it's there for safety purposes and that only. A helmet saved my life when I was on a regular hack in my local forest - I wasn't doing anything 'stupid', just a little trot through a forest, something I do quite often. The horse spooked because some eejits decided to have a jog in the woods not looking first before leaving the actual woods and going onto the mud path.

    No reason in the world not to wear a helmet while riding. Some people think they look ugly? Too fucking bad, last time I checked you're not riding horses to pick up at the mall. Do it for your own safety, doesn't matter if you think you're a "good" rider or not, accidents happen. This is a 1500 pound animal, and you are atleast 5+ feet above the ground while on it's back, and generally if you go over, you are going over head first. I've never ridden without a helmet, Wanting to die was not on my list of things to achieve while riding. Some people can just be daft as shit. Natural selection, take em away please. I'm glad you were using your helmet and made this video. You don't look bad in one at all, you look smart, and you look safe. And your horse is beautiful :D

    • @katharinasophie192
      @katharinasophie192 Před 10 lety +5

      actually, it does matter! First of all, if you're an experienced rider, most of the time you'll know when your horse is about to spook, so you are more prepared than someone with less experience. Also you learn to stay in the saddle/back und not simply "flew off".

    • @josiahigescu7840
      @josiahigescu7840 Před 10 lety +1

      IzzyAnd HerHorses if thats so, its obviously the riders fault for not observing their horse and their environment for things that could make em spook or buck. horses NEVER do something for no reason, its just up to us to learn what those reasons are.

    • @josiahigescu7840
      @josiahigescu7840 Před 10 lety

      Thats the point, if the horse spooks at a leaf, twig, rabbit, deer, gunshot ect then don't ride until you've desensitized him and he no longer spooks... simple as that :) hehe at one point my mare spooked at the sight of puddles... lol
      they say that a horse is best at doing what it does most, so instead of riding i went around walking through puddles together, now she LOVES puddles :)

    Here is my opinion on helmets. Keep in mind I have more experience with dirt bikes than horses, so I am going to use one accident with my dirt bike as an example.
    I've grown up riding dirt bikes and I have never ridden my dirt bike WITHOUT a helmet, and not a cheap helmet that you buy for $90.00 (I have no clue how much a horse riding helmet would cost I've always borrowed them.) There have been many times when I could have been seriously injured had I not had a helmet on. One of the worst was at a race someone pretty much rammed into my rear fender in a corner. There was a cement barrier by the corner and of course I lost my balance and wrecked. My head rammed straight into the cement barrier. I wasn't allowed to take my helmet off until the ambulance got there. My head was fine but had I not had a helmet on it would have been very very very ugly. The helmet pretty much saved me that time.
    Saying that it is too hot to wear a helmet is not a valid excuse! Where I live there is nothing but dirt. There are no trees or anything. (Well we do have a lot of sagebrush and snakes though). It gets 100+ degrees in the summer, but anyone I ride with always wears all of their protection. (Jersey, riding pants, boots, helmet, goggles, and gloves). Yes it get s HOT...incredibly HOT, but if I didn't wear all of my protective gear I would be incredibly screwed up right now. At that race I could have cracked my skull...that was the amount of damage that was done to the helmet. Poor helmet didn't stand a chance, but of course even if my helmet didn't look like it had gotten run over by a semi I still would have replaced it.
    That brings me to another thing. After you get into a serious accident with a helmet on ALWAYS replace it for safety measures.
    (Poor helmet, and it was only like two months old too.)
    *EDIT*
    Also, they were worried about damage to my neck, so I get to wear a neck brace now...YAY ME! >:(

    • @andrewcrow5787
      @andrewcrow5787 Před 10 lety +1

      Thank you for your story. Yes, even after a minor accident, a helmet does need to be replaced. It costs a lot less for a helmet than it does all the bills that you would get if you didn't have one. Helmets, just like seat belts do save lives.

    Hi, I am glad that you lived and was able to recuperate. I totally agree with you that a helmet is needed. I am new at riding and was up to cantering until about a week ago when I got my first "bucking off". Now, I am hesitant to canter but will keep working up to it. What I want to say mostly is that I am glad that I was wearing my helmet. I know it kept me from a severe head injury. I hit the right side of my head very hard but I thank God my helmet was on properly and that it helped prevent what could have been a busted head.

    • @sarahbarham8592
      @sarahbarham8592 Před 9 lety +1

      I fell off the second or third time I cantered. I wasn't too good at trot-to-canter transitions yet, and the horse went into a really really fast, bumpy trot before cantering. Of course, I lost my balance trying to sit the bumpy trot, so when she went into the canter I was already a lost cause and eventually fell off. It also didn't help that the horse was wearing a half-blanket because it was so cold outside, and the material was so soft and slippery that my legs had been having trouble gripping. Anyway, we were going pretty fast, and I landed on my back, hit my head on the ground, and the wind was knocked out of me. I was bruised and sore for about a week and a half, and my helmet was pretty scratched up. It was a mild fall as far as falling off a horse goes, but I could have gotten a concussion if I hadn't been wearing my helmet. I was really scared to canter again after that, but I got the hang of it pretty soon. And now eight months later, I'm cantering around like a natural and jumping 2 ft. fences. haha :)

I've been working with horses since I was four and trust me all you people out there who moan about horses sneezing on you, how about you think about a horse refusing a jump and swerving making the rider land with their back against the wall and the horse stamp on the riders leg while spooking. What made my accident worse was that I hit my head on the concrete wall. My hat practically saved my life! Because of my hat protecting my head I was riding again within a week! So all you people out there who think that you don't need a helmet, you shouldn't be near these gracious gentle creatures. And that's all I'm gonna say to y'all

      Never had a bad accident with a horse, got a few blue toes only, but when I was working with cows, one of them accidentally stepped on my foot. She stepped just were the steeltoe stopped, so even with that boot I couldn't walk properly for 2 weeks. Without the steeltoe I might never been able to walk normally again.

I do the same things without a helmet that I do with and I've never met someone that suddenly has been gifted with confidence because they've got a helmet on. If you're not confident a helmet does not grant that to you. If you are confident you'll be the same with or without a helmet.

    thank you. I too am a fellow horse back rider and trainer. i am training 3 horses currently and wearing a helmet is EXTREMELY important cause these horses are unpredictable. My helmet has saved my life tons of times yet luckily i haven't had to go to the hospital for my injuries. Good luck with your jumping!

    I absolutely agree. An Arab bucked me off onto a road once. I stayed on for the first three bucks but came off on the fourth head first into the tar. My helmet was cracked and the visor was ripped off. My neck and shoulder were badly strained. 3 cracked ribs and a cracked scapula (triangular bones attached to your upper back. NO HEAD OR FACE INJURY. I would have been dead or brain damaged for sure. I believe the helmet absorbed some of the impact as well preventing my neck from breaking. Not wearing helmets seems to be a cowboy fashion thing. I do Dressage and ride more English style so fashion isn't an issue for me (except for the hat hair problem and the sweating!). It's well and truly worth it. The horse that bucked me off was generally not a problem horse. You never know what could happen. Thanks for the video.
    Lovely horse, by the way.

    My opinion on helmets is coming from a barrel racers point of view and I believe that if the Good Lord wants to take my life, he's gonna take it whether I'm wearing a helmet or not. Land in a certain way and that helmet will snap your neck. If I get in a wreck that's bad enough to paralyze me or give me enough brain damage I couldn't live how I normally would, I personally wouldn't want to live through it. Helmets could save lives in car wrecks, so why not push on people to wear them in their cars? Just my opinion. You don't have to agree

    • @nohomo4u
      @nohomo4u Před 10 lety +1

      Helmets dont protect your neck so if you snap your neck, a helmet wont save you. Also if you get in a car accedent they have airbags so you dont need a helmet

    I respect you ^_^ I'm 50 50 on helmets, and don't complain when people wear or don't wear them-- if somebody feels safe when not wearing one, it's their business and I can respect it. I like how you aren't really trying to force anyone to wear a helmet, but at the same time make it clear that you think they are safer to ride with without being rude about it ^~^

    A helmet is a fantastic piece of kit. Just because your horse is very steady and you've never fallen, doesn't mean it can't happen. He could always trip or be scared by something he's never seen before. Hats are sensible when leading a horse too. Strong footwear would ideally be better than the trainers in the video too

  • @petrodvoretz
    @petrodvoretz Před 10 lety

    I wear a helmet... because anything can happen. On a trail with a horse you come across so many dangers, on the roads you come across cars or trucks or more that don't always slow down. Even if your horse is perfectly trained you can never be sure about the environment. A tree can fall, banks of a river can disappear under your horses' feet and under you is just a river full of rocks..... Thx for this video and glad you were wearing your helmet.

  • @blakealexis8391
    @blakealexis8391 Před 10 lety +2

    Being prepared is always the best thing to do. If your horse spooks at least you won't get injured as bad. The people who say they have had accidents and they were fine are really lucky. I'd rather be safe than to be sorry. Also I don't think it matters what level of experiance you have or how much you trust your horse because all it takes is one little thing to spook a horse. Helmets are in no way uncomfortable and they can be adjusted if they are so there really is no excuse not to wear one.

    I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to post this video. I think some of us can get complacent and forget to wear a helmet every time we ride or even do ground work with a green or unpredictable horse. Besides being a horse person, I've been a nurse for many years and I have seen the catastrophic effects of head injuries. Let's all remind ourselves and our fellow riders to be safe.

He fell and I cracked my head on the pavement and was unconscious for at least 5 minutes. What a lovely horse. :) I always ride with a helmet, and I've fallen twice in the 14 months I've been riding. Both times I walked away with only a few bruises, but the first time I fell it knocked the wind out of me and I hit my head pretty hard and scratched my helmet up (no dents or cracks, though). If I hadn't been wearing a helmet, it's entirely possible I could have concussed. I know concussions aren't life-threatening, but they do have a lasting impact, and I'd like to keep my brain as safe and healthy as possible. :p
