- From 2010, Dusty Wright presents singer/songwriter Anaïs Mitchell at her farm in Vermont. This is another wonderful song from her album Hadestown (A Folk Opera). Dusty Wright's One-Takes are a series of songs by artists you know, should know, or will know very soon.

Wow, to think Hadestown was so long in the making. It's incredible. And now shes a Tony winner and so is her music :)
Grammy winner now as well ❤️
She started writing it in 2005. Talk about long in the making.
“Alright anaïs, where do you wanna film this one?”
“Hey what about that velvet chair sitting out in the over grown field”
“Why do you have that?”
“This occasion”
“Artists you should know or will now very soon” got that right!!!
And to think 8 years later she’s winner for best composer on broadway!
I love how happy she looks when she plays
I want to be Anais Mitchell when I grow up! Sharp and witty, authentically cool.
sAME
Yes
Incomprehensible that there were only 40 people attended her concert in Nijmegen.
Luckily, I was one of the forty.
En daar kom ik @@$#&^ nou net pas achter, damn..
ik heb zoveel spijt dat ik niet ben gegaan.
I just found out about her recently because philosophy tube used a music of hers in a video
i love seeing how much fun she’s having just performing the song
Hi I love hearing your covers I think you’re both so amazing 😊 please keep up the good work
This is so charmingly authentic, I'm in love
Wow, it feels like you're everywhere in the comments! (It's probably because I have watched practically every video relating to Amber Gray, Hadestown, or Great Comet, but y'know....)
i would love a Persephone that sounds like her
This actually Does sound like how I'd imagine How she'd sound a bit of a Southern accent but high pitched
sings and plays well....I can hear a lot of blues guitar in there.....technique.....she has listened and learned from several string snappers that's for sure. I do the same whenever I can. Love you!
This whole album blows me away and the guest artists add the next dimension that is needed to off set her voice. The fact that she turned an opera into a modern day rock/opera is extraordinary
I've gone down a rabbit hole of videos showing the development of this amazing production, and watching Anaïs play this song a decade before just makes me very happy.
Wow such a cool unique voice
She won a grammy this week!
They had the mic a little hot, slight distortion on the belts, but I have heard a lot of her stuff, beautiful voice, great writer, and one of the best interpreters of old folk songs around. I think she's great.
Never heard this version, this is great stuff.
And soon she’ll win some Tonys !
She did win a Tony last week!!!
Oh my god, I couldn't even imagine how she'd do this live. And then she just DOES it. Exactly as powerful and as poignant as in the studio version. Scary.
This is the best version of this song. I feel it in my soul when anais sings
I love how this acoustic version sounds!
I kinda just love this girl...
She has all the passion for life I wish I had...
She has such a cute voice! Love the setting!
Until about a minute ago I had never heard of this lady. Now I will die if I cannot marry her.
Me too
Sadly she is married
Your happiness fills me up.
This video and this woman are a blessing to this world
XOA is on all my pods and pads, travels everywhere I go. Time to tour Europe, thinketh I, and don't forget Stockholm,Sweden, many venues are suitable for acoustic music with vocals. Ex-pat luthier living here since 80's and everybody should visit Scandinavia, at least once.Love from this side of the globe!
Talent .. No more needed to be spoken... Luv the scene/crickets/wind blowin grass... AWESOME
WHAT. THIS IS INCREDIBLE. I'M IN _LOVE_ .
im love with her -music
I've literally discovered Anaïs Mitchell twice. The first time was her authentic, translated tale of Tam Lin and then this... and I didn't recognize her as the same person.
It would be a shame if she became the next Eva Cassidy.
Love the background to the story:) I am a big fan of Greek mythology and consequently this song. So glad I discovered you through Hadestown!
She's amazing.
she's astounding.
pretty common blues riff...stray cat howl...the cat came back...etc etc.
I like her. very unique individual and voice
Wow. This is so cool
A modern classic
This is quite unique.
Gorgeous performance
Anais Mitchell is my hero
I totally love her
amazing as always
For some reason this is just so damn adorable
Yes, yes, more of that there!!
this reminds me of ricky lee jones. very beautiful!
Great great great performance. Thanks for posting!
WOW! Fantastic!
Wow - great performance!
Damn, that's good. My ears slapped me round the back of my head 'Hey listen up you!' Gutsy. Sharp. verve.
And she's coming to England soon...
So beautiful! :) Glad of my discovery ! Love particulary her song with Justin Vernon ! AWESOME!!
this is lovely.
wow she's awesome
Only just over a week before I can see this wonderful artist live can' t wait
so how did it go?
Just wow!
I love you Anais
Crazy good!
love her
she smashes her guitar strings... with a big smile as she sings. I love her high pitched voice when she talks, those north american girls have such a low voice, I don't know why...
Lovely lovely
ay preciosa, Rosita tiene tus mismos ojos y como me haces recordarla
sounds very much along the lines of Michelle Shocked...esp. the Texas Campfire Tapes...but good none the less. See 'fogtown'..
🖤🖤
Well said sir!
Is there a functional harmony in what is sung here vs what sung the show for “there’s a crack in the wall”?
the solfege for this version is: la la mi re do mi
and the solfege for the show is: mi mi la so mi la (higher, the first two notes are a fifth apart and the rest are a fourth apart, except for "the" which is a third apart as the show's version needs that note to be "mi" to fit the chord/overall harmony better)
the melody for this version does work as a harmony for the show's version! i'm not sure how to explain how it "functions" per se but they definitely harmonise
That guitar has been played a little bit. She's hitting the strings hard in this one. She looks so young there

Better than the album version!
Anyone know what the bluesy acoustic guitar licks in the intro are from?
Why we build the wall, also by Anais Mitchell!
so fucking sick!
Were you saying it before it was cool?
I’d be all over that Duke box x
I would seriously marry this girl
Reminiscent of John Martyn's version of Cocaine
Using the word "hipster" is so hipster.
Don't bother my jaded world view with facts.
anyone know what the chords to this are?
Also reminiscent of everything Joanna Newsom ever did.
#AvaBenincasa #TheActorsFund #HateCrime #DomesticViolence
C minor..... basically. Move the bass route around B, Am, Gm.
she wrote a song about her self. LOLOLOLOL didn't even realise it.
For giving you my best, and you paying no attention to it whatsoever. My hatred for you has reached insanity level. For such that you have strived for, if you do not strive for what is right from this point on. I no longer have any use for you. For it is written so shall it be done.
what
just reprise it.
@yamasedogI can actually smell the hipster seeping off of you.
Well... She is in her 30's
Oh, were you talking about someone else?
ice cream man
such a fragile voice
Sexy captivating and masterly done
Being about mythology doesn't make something an opera. If here is no orchestra involve it is not an opera. If you want to make a musical, call it a musical. The genre of musical has been unfairly stigmatized long enough and by calling pieces of art that are clearly not operas "opera", you are furthering that stigmatization.
Opera means a musical story with no spoken words, so yes it is an opera.
Not really, no.
The Magic Flute has spoken words, and many other operas as well. An Opera is a "musical" but in the classical tradition as opposed to being jazz or another popular musical genre.
Opera.
noun
1. an extended dramatic composition, in which all parts are sung to instrumental accompaniment, that usually includes arias, choruses, and recitatives, and that sometimes includes ballet.
Compare comic opera, grand opera.
2. the form or branch of musical and dramatic art represented by such compositions.
3. the score or the words of such a composition.
It's a folk opera.
no body can be this bad
She won a Grammy for an album this song was on
it's ok, but her voice annoys me
Fake fake fake. What a faker.
Elaborate? I’m interested.
You do know she wrote the song don’t you?
i'm getting tired of all the attractive 20 year old girls who somehow live on 'farms' that they own making hipster operas.
lopside0 Bruh..... this shit is on broadway. right now. and you really wrote this seven years agi
making *tony-award winning best musicals*
It's a Tony award winning musical now.
Dude...what even is this comment lol
Crazy good!
