    I own the S5II and the X-H2, and the Panasonic is the clear choice. Shared L mount lenses, better autofocus than Fuji, the video quality and tools are freakin amazing. It’s the best video footage I have ever seen out of a hybrid camera. V-log is amazing too, so easy to make look good. It’s my personal favourite camera, and I own an embarrassing number of cameras. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

      @@ChrisOrange I think it's good. I'm happy with the RAW files. One bit of a quirk, if you use single focus mode, rather than continuous, the autofocus is contrast based rather than phase detect. It still works, but it less perfect. I suspect it’s probably still as good as the Leica, but it’s not like a Sony, or as good as the camera is in continuous mode.

      @@markwiemelsI think it is DFD based in AFS only with lenses that support DFD. So only the Panasonic and some Leica lenses. The Sigma lenses do not support DFD and thus use PDAF even in AFS

    I've been using the x_t5, heavily, since it came out. If it turns out to be between the X-H2 and the X-t5, I would advise to handle both for a few long minutes before deciding. The X-t5 is simply a joy to use, I can't think of any other way to put it (ok, I do like the plain grip added). The battery lasts forever, menus are more intuitive than most, autofocus is damn good, including in very low light - I put the front button to turn on/off auto eye because that can sometimes catch an eye in the background. Haven't had a camera I enjoyed shooting so much since my old Canon F1 film camera.

    Hi Chris. I would personally go for the LUMIX S5IIX. Its lenses are compatible with your Leica SL and it’s a fabulous camera. The video specs are off the scale good and now the S5’s have phase detection autofocus. Plus it’s a full frame sensor so maybe dynamic range is also better. The Panasonic colour science is great. I only shoot raw these days so the Fujifilm simulations aren’t really something I’d think about

  • @ThierryQuerette

    I’m also searching for a second kit since I already have a Sony full frame. I’m leaning toward the Lumix G9 II, which has amazing video capabilities and high resolution. Additionally, being a micro four-thirds camera, it is very light. It’s praised for being a superb choice for wildlife photography and capturing action, thanks to its phase-detection autofocus and 8 stops in-body image stabilization.

    • @Democratiser
      @Democratiser Před 5 měsíci +1

      After thinking long and hard about the S5IIX and G9II I think I’m landing in the same position as you. I have Canon 5DIII for FF stills but for video the size of the size / features trade off is compelling with G9II. The only problem now is the price as the G9II, being the newer model is about the same price where I live. So I’ll wait until the prices drop.

      @ThierryQuerette Před 5 měsíci +2

      @@Democratiser I got it tax-free and decided to also buy the Panasonic Leica 12-35 F2.8 lens (24-70 F 2.8 Full Frame equivalent). The G9M2 and lens together weigh almost the same as my Sigma full frame 24-70 F 2.8 alone, which is great for my neck, shoulders, and back! 😊

      @@ThierryQuerette The size weight advantage of MFT is not to be underestimated. I took 5 lenses delivering 20mm-600mm FF equivalent on an overseas holiday last month. Total weight with a G9 = 1270g (or 80% of my Canon 70-200mm f2.8). Sure I didn’t have the f2.8 and bokeh all throttle focal ranges but still, MFT is seductive and makes you want to have it on your person.

    Do you need 8K video or not? If not, I think the X-H2s gives you more of what you need than the X-H2 or X-T5 (less rolling shutter and better AF).
    I have no personal experience with the Panasonic but I have a feeling that for video the S5ii might be the better choice, it probably has better video features, and for stills it might also be the better choice for many of the reasons you mentioned.

    OK Chris, I bought an old Fuji X-T1 because of you, and I like it a lot. This is what I use beside my Lumix S5 so now it's your turn to buy my advise. The Lumix S5 is having amazing video capability, 10 bit color, 4K 60 even Pro res external! very good IBIS and the auto focus is for me more than good enough. (I shoot video always manual focus btw) As long as you do not shoot wild life or sports the S5 is really more than capable to give you extremely nice video and photography results. I bought mine new for Euro 999,- better value for money you will not get anywhere else!

    Choices choices, what a dilemma. I like you had fujis including GFX, x100v, XE4, Then bought Leica q absolutely loved it so sold GFX etc apart from Xt5 and bought SL2s and a few lenses as you know a very good system. I now have 2 systems, Fuji smallish system and Leica a bigger heavier full frame but lighter than GFX system. I am thinking about LUMIX s5iix if it is as small and light as the XT5, and sell the Fuji and lenses as I can use LUMIX lenses on SL2s and S5iix. Currently have the lumix 16-35, 18 f1.8, Sigma 851.8 and a couple of others and very interested in the new LUMIX 100mm 2.8 macro. So we are like two pease in a pod what to do. I know nothing of the LUMIX system but for me you answered your own question. If you can use your existing glass on it then you’re already halfway there and potentially cost effective choice. I did wonder if Sony has anything suitable as they seem to have good autofocus. The XH though,could be a slight compromise technically but a good choice financially. Decisions decisions……

    I have an X-T3 and X-T5 (and others) if you don't need the 40MP but wanted better video features is the X-H2s not an option?
    The 4K video I have always been happy with on the X-T3 and never needed anything better than that. But if I was going to buy another camera it would be the X-H2s as it is the only fuji body that ticks boxes my current gear doesn't (but right now, it is not needed)
    One thing I have started doing, for specific commissions, I've been hiring gear (especially lenses) e.g. I need the 50mm - 140mm F/2.8 once a year for a few days... I could buy it and spend £1500 or just hire it for 3 days for £50

    Hi Chris
    I wanted only one system and bought the Leica Q, basically because it was complete in itself; I could then justify retaining the X-H2 in order to expand/contract the "kit", should the "work", photographing dog shows etc, require eg. a wide angle zoom or general purpose prime.
    In many ways I'd have preferred retaining the X-Pro2+ XF18mm F/2, but cost & common sense (?) prevailed. And this kit was always slow in comparison even with the Leica Q, and was certainly getting old!! Never mind ...you can always find a reason to buy/change camera, if you try hard enough! John Greenwood.
    PS. I'm not sure where you're based, and it may be a bit presumptive of me to suggest that a meeting with you, and like minded enthusiasts, could be a rewarding photographic experience?

    I think the LUMIX S5II would be a great addition. I doubt you need the S5IIx. The camera has full HDMI. AF is much improved. The f1.8 primes have very little focus breathing so all are good for video. And you can use your Leica glass. Good Luck with the decision.

    Hmmm... Interesting conundrum. I wonder whether it would inspire more to go into different newer ground for you at a price that is good and will do it all... I mean I love Fuji, I really do. I am less enamoured of the colour science and overall stability of Lumix systems, but aware that many swear by them. But what about a classy flagship with a surprisingly excellent wide zoom from a less familiar (for you) system? I would be very tempted to go down the route of the excellent Sony 6700 hybrid APS-C body - with some of the best video features of any hybrid system (even when competing against full frame). Probably the best autofocus system ever, which is also very quick, and is a cheaper body than the alternatives you presented in the video. Pair this with the new Sigma 10-18 f2.8 zoom. There's wider lenses that are interesting from Viltrox and TT Artisan... Add the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 zoom and it's remarkable sharpness for the price... I just think this is an interesting alternative setup that's also less expensive than the full frame Lumix or Fuji alternatives and in a system that has already proven to be the centre of many a pro kit.

For video, the Lumix is the clear option. Boththe Fujis overheat with 8k and 8k oversampled 4k, the Lumix will shoot 6k and 6k open gate continuously since it is actively cooled and you get the IQ benefits of FF.

    I think this is the 3rd or 4th video in a row I've watched of yours and found that they've echoed my views.
    Thanks to watching some of your earlier videos, I'm in the process of exchanging my much loved X-Pro2, XF18mm F/2, XF35mm F/1.4, and possibly also my XF23mm F/1.4 (WR), or XF16-80mm F/4, for a mint used Leica "Q". This kit should more than satisfy my requirements for a compact (fairly light?), travel/street photography outfit.
    I also agree that you should only purchase equipment that you can afford & need. When the X-H2 came out, I needed to cover "dog shows", & "dog portraits", which I still do for my wife & co-breeders, so I needed a faster auto focus combination, than my then current X-T3 & XF55-200 could provide. The X-H2 & XF50-140mm F2.8, does not disappoint. The auto focus is better, probably not the best, but more than adequate. To my mind X-H2 is a better handling camera than the X-T5, especially when used with larger, heavier zoom lenses. Yes ...I don't love it like my old X-Pro2, but is better handling than my old X-T3.
    Ideally I guess I'd like a complete full frame Leica SL system but costs prevent that choice; the Panasonic would enable to use Leica "L" (and adapted "M" & in my case ,"R" mount lenses), but I'm not sure about the Panasonic ecosystem when it comes down to extreme wide angle, & wide angle zoom lenses. In that regard, I doubt whether fast auto focus speed, would really apply.
    I think your best bet would be to try out an X-H2, with one of the new primes, focal length of your choice (don't know about the new XF8mm f4 (?) lens). I have, & use the new 23mm F/1.4, and it is much quieter & faster to use with the X-H2, than the previous Mk1. edition, with the X-Pro2, for example.
    Having said that, I could see you with an X-T5 (your favourite "X" camera (?)) & latest (wr) XF10-24mm F4 lenses & , although I don't like their form factor much, either a 35mm or 50mm, F/2 "Fujicrons" lens.
    I doubt whether this will help much. I had to use similar thought processes when changing to the Leica Q camera. (I hope I've made the right decision ...I so love my X-Pro2, but it's getting very old in the tooth now & I'm not so keen on high megapixel aps-c on what looks like the latest X-Pro4 replacement!)

      Thank you for such a well thought out response to my video. I find that I have to separate my heart and head decisions to keep me focussed on what I need. I can see upsides to both the Fujifilm and the L mount directions, but need to decide if I want two separate systems, or just one…

    No. stick to what you have, what you need, and know. There's never a reson to upgrade until a client pay for it, or you have a broken set.
