    Just for those wondering, here's the differences between the Mitsubishi GTO and Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4:
    *The 3000GT name was only used in the US, everywhere else it was under the GTO guise. This was because Mitsubishi thought Americans would be offended at a foreign vehicle using the GTO name.
    * The GTO was rated at 280bhp in Europe (all generations) and 276HP in Japan (all generations.). In the US, the 3000GT VR-4 was rated at 300HP@6000RPM / 307TQ@2500RPM with a 5 speed manual until 1993, in 1994 they were rated at 320HP@6000RPM / 315 TQ@2500RPM with a 6 speed manual, all gens had a Twin-Turbo 24V 3.0L DOHC V-6 and were manual transmission only. In 1994, all 3000GT VR-4s and GTO TT / MR had 320HP@2500RPM and 315TQ@2500RPM, despite stated otherwise.
    *In Europe, only the Twin Turbo version was available. The European spec GTO TT had 13g turbos instead of the 9b turbos everywhere else got - it was rated at 280BHP in Europe, but that was vastly incorrect. The 13gs allowed for high 12 second quarter miles stock. Mitsubishi did this for the Autobahn.
    *In Japan (and through the grey market in the UK), there was a GTO MR. The MR model was about 100lbs lighter (from deletion of the electronic things like 4WS, Active Aereo tunable exhaust as well as light weight BBS rims) and had shorter gear ratios as a factory option, which most did. The GTO MR was made to compete with the R32 / R33 Skyline GTR, which it handily beat in a straight line: czcams.com/video/ukVsqR66ldE/video.html This is just a snippet, the GTO MR beat the R33 Skyline GTR over the course of a mile by more than a car length, and was able to hang / beat it on the Tsukuba circuit as well.
    *In Japan the base model GTO SR had AWD only - no FWD version was available. Outside of Japan (and the UK grey market) all base model 3000GT / GTO were FWD. The GTO SR had 220HP@6000RPM/ 201TQ@4500RPM and was available with a manual or automatic transmission, and was obviously faster off the line than the FWD models.
    *In the US the base model came in 2 trims: the base model with a SOHC 16V V-6 producing 160HP@5500RPM / 184TQ @4000RPM, and the SL with a DOHC 24V V-6 producing 220HP@6000RPM / 201TQ@4500RPM until 1993, in 1994 the SL got a 3HP increase for 223HP / 204TQ @ the same RPMs.
    *Production of the 3000GT in the US stopped in 1999. Production of the GTO in Japan stopped in 2002.
    *The US motoring press did not know how to launch the VR-4 correctly, yet were still able to pull acceleration times that surpassed all but the MK4 Supra TT, showing the VR-4 to be easily faster in a straight line than the Z32 300ZX TT and FD3 RX-7 TT. With a correct launch, US spec VR-4s are capable of low 13 second quarter mile times - I own a stock 1997 VR-4 and ran a best of 13.18@103.9mph.
    Here is a video of a decently launched bone stock 1999 3000GT VR-4 running a 13.2 @103mph: czcams.com/video/vFEYkgOZdC4/video.html

    • @bliglum
      @bliglum Před 6 lety

      Ehh, it wasn't really underrated. Because this was basically a big FWD car. yes, the VR4 was pretty okay, but all the other Japanese halo sports cars of the time were better.

    • @marcosr666
      @marcosr666 Před 6 lety

      bliglum how so?

    • @bliglum
      @bliglum Před 6 lety +2

      marcos. Because if you don't get the VR4, you basically just have a midsize V6 FWD car, like a Camry... VR4's were pretty badass, they took what Mitsubishi learned with the big Galant VR4 rally race car, and put it in a sexier body. But the standard 3000gt (most of the 3000gt's made) was big, slow and heavy without any of the power or grip. Drove a few of them, they're boats... Never driven a VR4 though.

    • @marcosr666
      @marcosr666 Před 6 lety +1

      bliglum the VR4 easily competes with any of its contenders. As for the base, I have one with coilovers and trust me when I tell you this. It changes the car so much. The GT stands for grand tourer so it was never really meant to compete

    • @bliglum
      @bliglum Před 6 lety

      Ya ya, I said "VR4's were pretty badass".. Much like how the Mitsubishi Evolution is badass.. But most 3000gt's are more like the standard Lancer, which is to say, slow, and with wrong wheel drive. For comparison, the Supra and 300ZX non turbo's were similarly slow, but at least they boasted rwd so you could still have some fun.

    Lastly, there are some BULLSHIT articles online with WAY off stats for VR4s. *1990 to 1993 3000GT VR4s did 0 to 60 in 4.9s and the 1/4m in 13.6s to 13.8s@100 to 102mph with a good launch - 1994 to 1999 VR4s did 0 to 60 in 4.7s and the 1/4m in 13.0s to 13.4s @ 102 to 105mph* In comparison, *the 300ZX Twin-Turbo did 0 to 60 in 5.1 to 5.9s and the 1/4m in 13.8s to 14.0s @ 101 to 103mph* Ill leave the RX7 TT out of this as it was the slowest, and the Supra TT has already been gone over in the comments.
    The US motoring press couldn't launch these cars for shit. *The 1990 to 1993 3000GT VR4 ate 300ZX Twin Turbos for lunch, without an afterthought and the 1994 to 1999 VR4s RAPED 3000ZX TTs in a straight line*
    I would know, my first Z32 was a pristine 20,000 mile 1991 300ZX TT 5 speed manual (still own it alongside my modded 95 Z32 TT)...I remember my first race against a VR4, it was a 1992 VR4 that my friend still owns - from a dig he pulled 3 car lengths right off the bat and by 150mph I was a little left than half a car behind it. From a roll he had me by a fender. His best run stock was a 13.68@101.8mph. My ALL TIME best in my (still bone stock) 91 Z32 TT was a 13.77@103.9mph, and that was one of the best stock runs of any stock Z32 TTs I've seen..it was the best out of my group of Z32 friends / forum. Most of my friends were running consistent 13.8s to 13.9s @ 100 to 103mph.
    In 1994, when the VR4 gained 320hp / 315tq, another friend bought a 1995 VR4, brand new off the lot. At this point I had a 95 300ZX TT project that I was working on (and is now done), and was still driving my bone stock 91 Z32 TT.
    We lined up stock to stock....he jumped fucking 4 car lengths, and by 120mph I was so far behind it wasn't even funny - by 150mph (speedo indicated) he was 2.5 car lengths ahead of me. From a roll, he pulled 2 cars from 20 or 40mph, and 1 to 1.5 from freeway / high speed roll (80, 100mph).
    So Z32 guys, I love you, but keep it real. Back in the 90's / early 2000s all the owners of the 300ZX TTs were adult enthusiasts, and many owners kept their cars stock - *we knew the 3000GT VR4 / Stealth TT was much faster stock to stock than us* that's why we started modding them, because we were getting gapped by stock VR4s and Supra TTs even with bolt ons.
    /rant over

    Thank you for this. Had one of these in college. The level of refinement was better than any car in the class of the era. So much leather and soft touch trim. Not to mention the gauge pod and the driver set up was probably the coolest around. LS1s of the day and other fast cars of the era were no match on the street from light to light. So much torque down low and the ability to put it down. Quiet on the highway, great handling in the rain. Classic 80s/90s Japanese out-run design. High maintenance, transverse motor and haldex transmission set up that made working on it a nightmare. Still one of the best cars of the era.

    Happy I came across this video. Thanks for reviewing. I personally believe the 3KGT is the most underrated and under-mentioned of the JDM road beasts, even in Japan. You never hear these mentioned with the likes of Skylines, Supras, RX7s, STIs, and NSXs. As a matter of fact, the only time you hear about a Mittsu powerhouse, is the Lancer. As if the manufacturer never made an AWD, twin turbo demon coupe. I love getting on race sims, and destroying the monotonous JDM fanboys online with this and the Dodge Stealth. The only complaints I ever hear about these cars in videos is that "it's heavy". I'm like "bruh, ever hear of weight reduction?". This model should be way more celebrated and unicorned' than it is. Good thing it's not totally a unicorn tho, and you can still afford these, or an earlier Dodge Stealth.

      @rtturboguy Před 3 lety

      Part of the reason is, they only sold 225,000 of them between 1991 and 1999 ALL models/trim levels
      INCLUDING the dodge stealth (base, SL Vr4, RT, ES, Base, RTTT), which was mechanically identical. Motor was interference, and the clutch/awd/transfercase system was WAY complicated vs say the skyline GTR of the time, or the plain simple RWD setup of the supra. People shied away from them because of that. Also, starting points were less aggressive in the 3S platform. small TDO4 9b turbos, and 360cc fuel injectors from the factory didn't make for ease of power gains like the aforementioned supra, or skyline, or FDRx7... The 3S, however, is infectious and its a pleasure to own/drive. I've had 5 of them, Currently own MKIV Supra, R33GTR and #88 99 3000GT VR4.

    My dream turned into reality in 2012, where I bought a basically one owner ride with a little over 80,000 miles, in pristine condition.
    I never like to drive what everybody else has and in '98, I got stopped. A LOT. Just to ask what I did for a living. Smh.
    I SWEAR BY 3000GTs and would drive no other sports car under 100 grand.

    I currently own a 1999 3000GT. Color is in the 3000GT's "Signature" Bright Caracus Red Color & was bought brand NEW from the Mitsu Dealership way back in 1999 itself by my family. Unfortunately, our 3000GT is only a Base Model & NOT a VR4 one :(
    But no matter, VR4, SL or Base, it's still a 3000GT & we still kept ours in good hands with only ~60,000 miles as of now I am writing this in 2024. Our 3000GT Base is still a beauty, especially with her bright red caracus red color still glistening as of today in 2024 & despite our base 3000GT is weaker than the VR4 version, she is still a 3000GT, one of Mitsubishi's finest!
    For those who currently own any 1999 Mitsubishi 3000GT of Base, SL or VR4 models, Happy 25th Birthday to your 1999 3000GTs & congratulations for keeping your 1999 3000GTs in good hands for 25 years (aka. 1/4 of a century).

    Oh god, this brings back memories. Had a 98 red VR4, the one with the hoop wing, but I could not get it registered in CA, due to having a check engine light. Would pass the sniffer test, but the P505 code for intake manifold sensor error... Replaced it but it would not go away. Unfortunately, after 3 years of it sitting in CA, had to get rid of it. Got a C6 Vette instead, but my heart is always with that VR4.

    I'm in the UK, we have every version of this platform here, and my Mitsu mates own quite a few. They are insanely fast cars in factory stock spec form. I'm a Honda enthusiast, and have owned Type Rs for years and years now, and any GTO TT / MR would easily beat any Type R (aside from the new NSX) in a straight line. If I was going to buy an AWD performance car, the GTO TT would be in my top 3 choices - they are faster on the motorway and have way more top end power than all the STIs and Evos (besides the FQ series), and will do an honest 170mph flat out. It was also much, much faster in a straight line race than the 300ZX TT, RX-7 TT, and Supra TT, and remember we have the grey market here!
    My mate's 2018 FK8 Type R (320bhp, intake) lost by 2 and 2.5 car lengths in a race from 0 to 260kph against my other mates bone stock 1993 UK spec GTO TT and bone stock US spec 1995 3000GT VR-4. These cars dyno at 280 to 295 bhp at the wheels. In the UK they were rated at 280bhp, measured at the wheels, so the US spec models 320hp rating is shite - these cars make more like 350hp. Again, the GTO TT / VR-4s are much faster in a straight line than the 300ZX TT, RX7 TT, and Supra TT stock for stock, but all those other cars handle much better and are much more engaging to drive, so it's a trade off.
    *UK spec GTO TTs will do 0 to 100kph in 4.9s to 5.3s and the 1/4m in 13.3s to 13.6s @ 103 to 105mph (5speed) and 0 to 100kph in 4.6s to 5.0s, 1/4m 12.8s to 13.1s @ 104 to 106mph (6-speed). US-spec 3000GT VR4s will do 0 to 100kph in 4.7s to 4.9s and the 1/4m in 13.0 to 13.4s @ 101 to 104mph (6-speed), and JDM GTO TTs are identical. The 94 to 96 GTO MR does 0 to 100kph in 4.5s to 4.7s and the 1/4m in 12.5s to 12.8s @ 105 to 108mph*
    My mates stock 1993 GTO TT (280bhp, UK spec, 5 speed) ran the 1/4m in 13.41 @ 105.2mph. Other mates stock 1995 3000GT VR-4 (320hp, US-spec, 6 speed) did the 1/4m in 13.21 @ 103.8mph.
    Differences are due to the fact that the UK spec GTO TT had 13G turbos stock and longer gearing (the 6 speed models are very rare, GTO TT production stopped in 1996) and the US spec models have 9B turbos but shorter gearing, so UK models trap higher but US models have a lower ET.
    The J-spec models are a mixed bag. The J-spec GTO TT is identical to the US-spec 3000GT VR-4 down to the gearing and turbos. However, the 1994 to 1996 GTO MR is a whole different monster. I had a mate with a pristine low mileage 1996 GTO MR, all factory spec down to the cloth seats - he not only beat my 1993 NSX R from 0 to 260kph by half a car, but ran a 12.6@107mph at the quarter mile strip. That car would walk all over R32 and R33 Skyline GTRs, and was neck and neck with the R34 Skyline.
    Here in the UK, this car was never a 'black sheep', or 'underrated' in car communities. It was well known to be the fastest 90s JDM supercar as far as straight line speed, the 300ZX TT following in particular really suffered because of how much faster the GTO TT was. It was the most powerful / fastest production vehicle in Japan until the R34 Skyline GTR.

    Typical story with Mitsubishis. Like the Evo's story will be in 10 years - especially the X. People will still mod and track them, but it's likely that no one will talk about them. Thanks for posting, Wick - definitely good to see some love for the GTO. Beautiful car, especially a Final in white (awesome work, and keeping it clean, John!) One can only hope that Mitsu bounces back and has some margin to spend on another halo. How that's looking considering the world is going caveman on Utes... dismal prospect. And thats why those who have cars like these will forever be rockstars. Much love from a fellow MMC enthusiast.

    Im in s. Philly, we have a huge scene here. Lots of mk4 Supra TTs, fd3 tts, z32 tts and VR4s. Out of the 4 we have more VR4s and mk4 Supra TTs than the other two, with the z32 tt being more common than the fd3 tt.
    This guy is correct, the GTO / VR4 platform was aimed to take on the Skyline GTR series. The GTO MR is faster stock to stock than the r33 Skyline GTR and as fast as the r34 Skyline GTR V-Spec in the 400m dash and mile dash. It also obliterated the j spec mk4 Supra TT in all acceleration tests, no contest, let alone the z32 and fd3 which both weren't even close. In Japan theyre all equals and sell for the same prices.
    When i had my stock 93 300ZX TT i got gapped by so many stock VR4s that i would have switched platforms, but i don't like how VR4s handle or how they look, and they are disconnected feeling to drive vs the z32.
    However, stock to stock the VR4 smashes on the 300ZX TT and RX7 TT in a straight line, by quite a bit, and is faster than the mk4 Supra TT until highway speeds (off a high speed roll the mk4 tt dominates the others, but from a 20 roll the VR4 actually pulls on the Supra TT for a bit).
    My boy just copped a bone stock 1998 3000GT VR4 with 120k miles and 50% tread on it, full interior, nothing done but a basic oil change...he ran a fucking *13.09@107mph* at the track the other night, he's shooting for high 12s stock. Gotta respect the VR4.
    I ended up selling my 93 300ZX TT, got a 95 300ZX N/A and did a tt engine swap, stripped interior and major bpu mods, im pushing well over 400@whp now, im deep in the 12s with 115 plus trap speeds, and i STILL get gapped by stock VR4s off the line and don't pass until highway speeds from a dig.
    Would i own a VR4? No. Do i respect them? Hell yes. There's a reason we have so many in our crew, they're hard to launch right but when you DO get it right, it launches harder than any Evo or STI (we have a ton of those in our crew as well).
    Awhile back someone in a bone stock 2017 Subaru WRX STI wanted to run my boys stock 97 3000GT VR4, this was when i realized why the z32 and fd3tt couldn't keep up, i was in the pasenger seat of the VR4 filming it - they went from a dig, and the STI (being way easier to launch) got the jump...they were neck and neck until about 90mph when the VR4 just started pulling, by 120mph the STI was 2 cars behind and fading. The VR4s 6 speed keeps the speed going from a dig, and the pull doesnt stop until 6th gear, whereas the Evo and STI both run out of breath on the highway. Guy ended up modding his STI, same with the VR4, they haven't lined up yet but both are running deep 12s.
    Anyways, to every one who thinks the VR4 is "heavy" or "unreliable" or "shit"....take it from a z32 tt owner, don't sleep on any VR4, they're fast as fuck even stock, and even stock are more than a match for 'newer' performace cars - from a dig 370zs, STI / Evos, FK8 Type Rs, etc, get gapped. 94 and up VR4s give 2017 Golf Rs and Focus RS's fits, same with Audi S4s and shit. Seen it. Hate it or love it, the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 is a beast.

    I've been trying for a few years now to get the 3.0L from one of those things and put it in my 1990 Daytona.

    I owned an mk4 Supra TT, it was almost too fast on the highway, i kept it stock. I cross shopped all 4 (fd3, vr4, z32, mk4), and it came down to the 94 3000GT VR4 or 94 Supra TT, i went with the mk4 for the reliability and RWD.
    However, i had friend's with VR4s, they're amazing machines. They're a lot faster acceleration wise than people think - they easily left the fd3 tt and z32 tt eating gas all the way til top speed, and can trap low 13s stock. My friend had a 95 VR4 and ran my other friend with a 92 z32 tt, they were both stock low mileage cars, the VR4 dusted that z like no one's buisness, dig or roll; my friend with the z32 immediately did some modding on his car after losing to the VR4.
    All 4 were awesome, all 4 were different. The fd3 handled amazing, as did the z, imo the VR4 was the fastest accelerating as my mk4 wasnt as impressive until highway speeds where it would blow past my friends VR4.

    Those seats are amazing, the only few things I would change in the interior of a 99 vr4 is the steering wheel to a Mitsubishi Colt which looks like it should have been made for that car. And the head unit to the eclipse infinity head unite from a 2003 model and lastly the white overlay dials on the gauge cluster like the way they did on their eclipse 99 gsx models. Awesome car

    When Chrysler and Mitsubishi split Mitsubishi didn't have any ideas and I just heard recently there bring back the eclipse...... As a crossover that's so bad knowing it used to be a 2 door coupe and a hatchback but it's whatever I own a 98 eclipse myself

    Liked for being in DFW. I'm more of a Stealth guy, but the 99 3000GT is a great looking car.

    I own a 93 vr4, it's amazing car when it was running, the turbo kicks in at very low rpm and made it super fun to drive, but these cars need alot of maintenance. Mine has been sitting for 2 yrs, leaking aws lines, transfer case leaking... problems after problems, that's why they were forgotten.

      a 93 skyline with the same miles would have the same issues. not just a mitsubishi thing its a 90s japanese turbo car thing. takes money to keep them running
