  • Red Lights and Civil Rights: LGBTQ History of Hampton
Join Professor Charles Ford for a showing and discussion of the short film "Red Lights and Civil Rights."
While Hampton has never had a specifically gay-identified bar or restaurant, it has nonetheless had a rich LGBTQ history from the beginning.
Dr. Ford is a Professor of History at Norfolk State University who has published works on public school desegregation and civil rights in Norfolk. He currently serves on a number of non-profit and civic boards, most notably as a trustee for the Virginia Queer Film Festival, a director for Hampton Roads Pride, and a board member for STOP, Inc.
This program, presented in partnership with Hampton Roads Pride, was recorded as part of the Hampton History Museum's Port Hampton Culture Series on April 1, 2024.
The Hampton History Museum is located at 120 Old Hampton Lane in Downtown Hampton, VA. For more information visit www.hamptonhistorymuseum.org/hampton.gov/4075/Hampton-History-Museum
