    A G9 mark II would definitely be interesting. Now that Panasonic is incorporating phase detection AF into their cameras, I can see the Mark II becoming an excellent sports and wildlife camera. It can one-up the OM-1 in the m43 space.

  • @raksh9
    @raksh9 Před rokem +7

    I just did a real estate shoot with the G9 - the last time I did one of those was about 10 years ago with the 5D Mark II. Setting up the G9 for exposure bracketing was easy, and the settings could be saved to a Custom preset as usual. The Panasonic 7-14 performed really well, and five bracketed exposures blended with Lightroom/Enfuse produced lovely files. I took identical bracketed images with the S5 and there really wasn't much between them in those conditions. The S5 had more highlight retention, even with the exposure bracketing, but I'm happy to use the G9 as primary interiors camera.

    If a new G9ii would have 3 keyfeatures I would consider upgrading from my Olympus OM-D E-M10ii:
    1.) Phase AF
    2.) USB-C power supply
    3.) No 30 minutes video time limit

    The way the G9 is set up just feels right. The buttons, the mode dials, the back button focus, the menus and colors. I absolutely adore this camera. It's been pretty adequate for my BIF shooting but shines whenever I do people or when doing manual focus on macro. I carry it and the EM-1 MKII with me everywhere when I'm shooting.

    • @jeffslade1892
      @jeffslade1892 Před rokem

      Yebbut back button focus is where there is an appreciable lag between AF look and focus. It's for where you focus and the subject moves out of focus before to use the shutter. Use AFC/AFF then. Some brands are inherently slow to focus and then shoot, which is where use back button comes from. G9 has DFD, do not delay between lock and release. It also has AF-Near and AF-Far to sort things out. I have had the E-M5ii as second camera but it lacks the minimum shutter speed that the PEN-F has although it is easier to hold with a long lens.

  • @jpsteiner2
    @jpsteiner2 Před rokem +5

    The G9 is an awesome photography camera. The DFD works well for what I shoot. I don’t shoot things such as birds in flight with a zoom or prime telephoto, though. This may be where phase detect shines for photography. Beyond the camera, I think the area that could use some refresh is the lenses. The 20mm, for example, while a nice lens, has an archaic drive motor. Some of the telephotos could be upgraded to a constant f/stop, which benefits both photography and videography. And weather seal them.

    • @jeffslade1892
      @jeffslade1892 Před rokem +1

      I do shoot birds in flight and no phase detect does not shine here. PDAF is actually hybrid, it uses CDAF to finalise focus. What PDAF can do that straight CDAF cannot is tell the lens how far to move, which DFD has solved. DFD relies on having a fully characterised lens, the camera knows how far to shift it. Straight PDAF is inaccurate. The Panasonic DFD focus speed has only recently been beaten bu Sony. What the OM-1 has brought to the table is better recognition, you can tell it what to focus on. The G9 recognition is more automated, it will focus on what it thinks you want. With birds in flight we get no time to fiddle with the camera selecting the focus point. Animal recognition means the G9 has to think about what the subject is, which takes longer.. The AFS is quickest and has a degree of intelligence built into it. If it sees a bird against the sky, it assumes the bird is the subject, or any other subject/background for that matter, it guesses and is usually right.

    Absolutely one of the best cameras ever made regardless of sensor size

  • @brucegraner5901
    @brucegraner5901 Před rokem +2

    The G9 is under appreciated mainly because of its contrast focusing system. However, I think this is unfair, based on my experience with the camera if given just a little bit of direct sunlight, assuming you max out the autofocus sensitivity and overlap subject detection using the center square focusing pattern. I've managed to get sharp photos of even black skimmers coming straight at the camera. Ergonomics are about perfect. An upgraded sensor to reduce rolling shutter would be appreciated and a slightly higher resolution EVF wouldn't hurt. I wonder what improvements Lumix could make at the $1,999.00 price point? Even as is, the G9 is worthy of greater recognition than it's received.

    Thanks Grant, I've been using a GX8 and Sony Alpha Full-frame for years for still and video and unless it's serous landscape stills or ultra low-light video, I typically grab the GX-8, and for most routine stuff the GX-8 gives adequate or superior results with less hassle, and often get's the shots I miss with the Sony. If I'm shooting candid or street, or news gathering, the GX-8 is my goto, and having non-cropped, 10-bit 4k and IBIS for 4k video with the G9 would be a huge benefit for video over the GX8. I will miss the form factor and flip-up EFV of the GX8 very much.

    I just saw this video and subbed. I started with the G7 then the G85 and about 1 year ago purchased the G9 used at a local camera store. I like what you said about what do we really want in a G9 Mark 2? I know I would like maybe 30 megapixels and 120 with hig res mode and phase detect auto focus for the video part and unlimited recording in all modes but when you think of it you can get that now almost if you go to the S5 Mark 2 and you get full frame but that means buying new lenses which I don't want to do. So maybe someday I will get the GH6 on sale or used and then I can use all of my current lenses! Good video looking forward to another one.

    I have the lumix s5iix and have been enjoying it . Its my first real full frame, But ive been eyeing the MFT cams because these sigma lenses i have for full frame are just very heavy and expensive. I get so jelly seeing all these high quality cheap mft lenses. The g9 or g9ii with two of the summerlux zoom lenses would cover soo much ground and be very gimbal friendly. I actually bought the sigma 150-600 sport dg dn lens and omg its a tank. I regret it. MFT for that stuff is fine enough for me.

    One of the main reasons for considering a new G9 with upgraded specs is that we can get incredible Video Specs on top of the great stills capability. And most likely better stills capabilit y 5 years on now. But, the single most important reason for me not "upgrading" to FF is that I see a vastly improved (if it is the case upon release) MFT camera as being a very sensible growth path since it's not the body but the Massive Lens investment required to change systems. It remains to be seen how extensive an upgrade the G9ii is. If it's underwhelming then I'm happy with my G9. But every time I look at a FF change, I resist because I know the lens investment will far exceed the FF body cost and for what real advantage in a world of online photo posts? If I was a full time landscape/nature/wildlife photographer, the sensor real estate would be compelling but once again the lens costs and size are a deal breaker for me.

Mine's a red 50th Anni. model (painted headstock!), but because my girl gave it to me as a present, i've made peace with the aesthetic. So I know I can change... hmm, baby blue... does it feel different in the hand and mind? Thanks for the vid (Lkd. & Subbed). All the best from a cabin in a swamp in a rain-forest in Taranaki.

      If you compare the S5 with 50/1.8 with the G9 and Olympus 25/1.8 or even f1.2, there is a considerable difference in dynamic range and low light performance. I have both, and the S5 would be my pick for night photography or shooting in very challenging light conditions. There is a lot more leeway for recovering under or overexposed images with the S5, too. The G9 is an excellent camera, but the S5 is just better in image quality and file malleability.

    Why the G9 for me rather then the E-M1iii or the later OM-1 - the stabilisation. The Ollies don't have that Dual-IS except with a couple of hideously expensive IS-Pro lenses. What the OM-1 has brought to the table is better (or is that just more) focus functions. No not the PDAF because DFD is still quicker, but the ability to better select moving subjects. But we only get DFD with Lumix lenses. The Ollie IBIS is good but the G9 Body-IS is good too. However the Dual2 goes one stage further and makes big long lenses truly hand-held. This means that when framing the shot, the image is rock solid. That can be important with wildlife where the mft already gives us the advantage of a smaller angle of view. G9 mk.2? improve the intelligence of the AF system. Bird recognised in tree? - focus on the bird not the branches.

    I probably can’t outgrow my G9 as a stills camera. Any future replacement would come from a need for higher video resolution. But buy the time 6 or 8k video is common place, my G9 will be pretty worn out.

  • @wolfganghnida-eichenlaub2537

    During the period between 1971 and 2000 I used two SLR cameras, I never had any autofocus and used different films with different ISO. I bought the GH2 in 2011 because of its video capability in HD. At the moment, the G9 is the cheapest MFT camera, made preferably for stills. The OM1 is probably better due to phase detection and due to its sensor. Would I buy a G9 for my purposes? Probably not, because my GX8 and GX9 are excellent for stills. Panasonic went over to full format with the S1 and the S5, therefore I don't know if an updated G9 (phase detection, 25 MP sensor, some more video gimmicks) has a real chance on the market. On an excursion in Sofia/Bulgaria last year, my wife and I were the only people with a camera. All the younger people used their smartphones for taking pictures. The picture quality is getting better and better. Artificial intelligence will probably make photography obsolete. You can upload video and still content easily with your phone. For my personal purposes, I prefer stills which I can watch more intensively than a 7-second movie scene followed by another one.

      One caveat I'll add, on a personal note, is that AI's impact on photography will have little effect on people like 'Me'. The reason being that I place a high value on the way in which photography (digital and film) engages my brain, not least in respect of the multitude of questions it asks of us... the problems posed. So will 'we' continue to think (and explore), or will we devolve into passive consumers of thought and experiences generated from without? I know where I sit on that one.

      @wolfganghnida-eichenlaub2537 Před rokem

      @@luzr6613 The most important part in photography is the photographer himself, not his tools. We live in a world of pictures, which we can see everywhere. Their style is also influencing the way, we compose our photos. For instance, selfies are very common since smartphones are widespread. Most of them have a wide angle lens as a normal lens. These technical preconditions are in my opinion the way of seeing and taking pictures. When I started with photography 50 years ago, the “normal” lens was a 50 mm lens. I added a 28 mm and a 135 mm lens to my equipment and was very content with this gear. Was the way of seeing interesting subjects and composing your picture different when you have only these three perspectives? Nowadays, you can change the sky, can delete unwanted subjects, change the color and so on. Do these opportunities change somebody's photography? We can develop more creativity with modern digital cameras!

    • @luzr6613
      @luzr6613 Před rokem +1

      @@wolfganghnida-eichenlaub2537 I think that one of the most fundamental of the changes we have experienced as people who take photographs is not particularly the transition from film to digital per se, but the way that transition has un-limited the sheer volume of images we can aquire. I remember making a roll of IP4 last a week because that was the rate at which I could afford to consume film... and then the agony of waiting to see if the roll held anything of merit. Now we can burn a comparable number of images in one second, maintaining that rate until the camera melts through our fingers. Measured only by volume metrics, we have 'more creativity'. Considered as a ratio of quality to quantity, I'm not confident there's been much in the way of progress.
