I hate that equipment is what prevented this before. All the janky stuff we had used growing up on games and then have to find out about overclocking controllers and refresh rates etc to actually perform how our brains were able to all along. It is infuriating that sony, ms, nintendo, konami etc sold equipment that could of done things like this but they just dont care.
Also DDR Extreme having bugged tracks and screwing with your mind thinking its yourself making mistakes. Its so unacceptable we had to become in our mid 30s until this was common knowledge. 1000hz pad and that was the difference maker? You were already hitting those quints in other songs too but your equipment was LYING about your scores before on account of its polling rate.

Part of it is the equipment, but it's kind of just, everything. We were all dumber and less experienced. We had less community knowledge and resources. Engines for playing rhythm games were worse. We literally didn't know what tech was or the best consistency and cheese strats. At one point no DDR charts existed, and then we had like, *10* songs in the first mix, and now the number of songs stepped across the entire commnunity is probably like, 10k-100k. We stand on the shoulders of giants (well, Chris and Dimo do, I'm just here to cheer)

Back in the days of DDR Extreme we didn't have Marvelous in normal gameplay because it was considered too hard at the location test. It was long believed that Yasu's 1 Great on PSMO was the best score we would ever see on the song, that it was just too hard and the AAA required too much precision. When they finally added it in SuperNOVA 2 there was a grind on Sunkiss Drop *BEGINNER* for the first MFC and it was generally believed we would never see one on Expert. PSMO has now been MFC'd, as well as so many songs harder than it. You're faulting Konami for the skill of the player base in 2002, dude. Yeah, we can go on about how Extreme polls input and how on some notes the early or late Perfect doesn't even exist in Marvelous enabled modes or in Extreme Pro. But also it was 2002. You're looking at it from a 2024 skill set. Point your energy at DDR World please. It needs it. It's several steps forward but also a couple back and there's still work to do. You're mad at the engine and hardware limitations of a game released back when SDGing Captain Jack made you the local god.

@@Nifterific It's not just ddr, my fury is from many equipment abomination discoveries over time. How subtle equipment flaws were the reason for many skill walls of the past. Every single genre is effected and I've been through them all. Decades of using equipment in shooters, fighting games, RTS that made my buttons come out a few frames slower and all manner of other jank crap effecting performance in subtle ways that we naturally believed was our own bad awareness, reflex etc, until we learn about this equipment crap. Back in 2010 everyone finally got mass aware of 240 fps and 144hz screens multiplying skill levels on first game using it. Then controller users had to learn about overclocking and oh what do you know, no more weird brain error feelings on diagonal aiming and melee trades, your synchronicity with the controller and your mind finally feels normal. Chris getting a pad that polls at 1000hz and it's EASY for him to Quint. That means he's likely quinted many times, but had no choice but to think it was his skill or brain preventing him from doing it, but it NEVER was. It was the tool registering the inputs, this is abomination to me because our gamer youth was wasted using these things.

@@killout18 our gamer youth wasn’t wasted on these things. You missed my point entirely. We weren’t that good at the game back then. 1000hz polling wasn’t magically going to have anyone in 2002, even 2006, or 2010 MFCing songs on Extreme, SuperNOVA, or even X. The player base just wasn’t that good. Best case scenario some of the top players spent less attempts on some AAAs and maybe PSMO would get got back then. And arcade operators aren’t just going to throw money at these things just because we get better, either. SN2 cabs just stopped getting updates this year. X cabs have World on them now. And Konami really had no way of knowing just how good players would get. This goes back a long ways, like you say. Look at Super Street Fighter II Turbo. The turbo speeds just crank up the frame rate, but at like 75 FPS on a 60hz monitor what happens is it drops frames and can only do 60 of them. So there is a possibility when you’re knocked down you lose the frame for your reversal. There is a possibility during your combo you won’t have the frame needed for that link or cancel. Also it was 1994. I mean, what do people really expect from old games and old hardware. Things are made for the player base at the time. And even then, how many players *now* can actually take advantage of these kinds of pads? Not many. Only the very best in the world. If I had to guess, maybe 10-15 total players altogether could do something better with this kind of pad. The rest of us might get a couple less perfects or a few less greats. 10ms timing was just adopted by the ITG community this year, it’s wild to me that someone is trying to slam machines made in like 2009 like the X cabs running World for not doing this.

yeah man he really had to rely hard on the bar for this score. and you're so right, the way the signal gets to the computer about what arrow you stepped on and when is really just so important to the integrity of the game!
do you practice being this stupid or does it just come naturally to you?
