"Hasan Minhaj has mostly stayed quiet about a September New Yorker profile that alleges he fabricated or exaggerated elements of stories he tells in his stand-up comedy, a bombshell story that raised questions about his public persona.
Although he gave a statement Sept. 15 after the article’s publication that said, in part, “All my standup stories are based on events that happened to me,” Minhaj hasn’t responded in detail - until now, and in, as the comedian puts it, “the most Hasan Minhaj way possible: a 20-minute deep dive with graphics and excessive hand motions.”"

It's wild to me that Hasan's standup routine is being "fact-checked." Has this ever been done to any other standup comedian, ever??? We, as viewers, need to know the difference between a standup routine (where the artist is expected to use creative license to bring home his point), and political comedic commentary (where comedy is weaved into factual political news.) The New Yorker did not criticize his work on political commentary shows like The Daily Show or Patriot Act. They (the New Yorker) needs to be held accountable for bungling this and smearing his reputation.

Wait- I’m confused. The outrage comes from alleged life experiences from a stand up routine? Exaggerated, fabricated and Completely made up events meant to come across and real life experiences in storytelling format is literally what stand up comedy is. Even comedians that go as far as to add a “and this really happened” or “I swear I’m not making any of this up” line before the bit 9 times out of 10 are still totally made up. I can’t think of any comedian that a) the majority of their routine isn’t literally full on storytelling and b) all of the accounts they claim are accurate, true life experiences. Some are inspired by experiences that are fabricated for comedic effect, or stories they heard through friends or read/heard in the news that claim are their own, or a combo of both, but the majority are straight up made up completely. If I’m missing something, please inform me because I’m totally lost. If you have ever watched 10 minutes of a Black comedian’s stand up routine, you will more likely than not hear a bit storytelling a detailed account of a racist encounter claiming to be a real personal experience that is totally fabricated or possibly inspired by a real event, but is so far fabricated for the sake of comedy that it’s nothing even close to the event that inspired the bit. If these are the new standards, you can cancel the majority of Black comedy all together. It’s not meant to be factual, it’s meant to make you think a little deeper about reality of racism or the Black experience in America with laughter.

I don't even think of Hasan's embellishments as lies, fictional stories maybe. Even if they were completely made up I wouldn't care. Unlike some sensitive little flowers, I don't see a comedy show expecting historical accuracy. It doesn't matter if it's true. It only matters if it is funny. I also attend scientific and history lectures, where humor is nice but only accuracy is required. I normally assume that stories told by comedians are not real, just like the stories performed by actors in a movie, it only needs to entertain.

No one expects the stories comedian tell during their set are totally true. It's entertainment. Health Care industry... Amazon.. The Saudis... The Far Right Indian Government... China Oppression... Never doubt that pushing the buttons of the wrong group in power can wind up coming back to you. Not necessarily directly either. Even Jon Stewart got pushed out of his excellent show since even he found out there were topics that he could go after. He differentiates between stand up comedy, in which facts are secondary to "emotional truths", and political reporting, in which facts are primary. Hasan performs both, and all of the embellishments were part of his stand up routine. His political reporting was never called into question, nor are there any examples of his "emotional truths" being associated with those programs, as far as I am aware.
