- Greater Coucal or Crow Pheasant . In ‘Malayalam’ vernacular, the bird is called “Chempothu”, ‘” Uppan”, “Chakoram” or “ Iswaran Kakka”.
Scientific name of the bird is Centropus sinensis
The birds occur in a wide range of habitat from the scrub jungle, sacred groves, home gardens, plantations and agricultural fields.
The bird is resident, a large non-parasitic member of the Cuckoo Order, the Cuculiformes
They are large, crow-like with a long broad tail and coppery brown wings. The mature bird is about 50 cm long. The head is glossy black, upper mantle and underside are black glossed with purple. The eyes are ruby red. Juveniles are duller black with spots on the crown and there are whitish bars on the underside and tail. Sexes are alike.
The bird takes a wide range of insects, caterpillars, vertebrates, small snakes, lizards, and snails. They are also known to eat bird eggs, nestlings, fruits and seeds. They are largely terrestrial and stalk along the ground or clambers and hops with agility amongst branches of shrubs in search of food. The birds usually look very lazy but are most active in the morning and in the late afternoon. They sunbathe in the mornings singly or in pairs on the top of vegetation with their wings spread out.
The calls are a booming low goob-goob-goob repeated and with variations and some duets between individuals. Other calls include a rapid rattling "lotok, lotok ..." and a harsh scolding "skeeaaawz" and a hissing threat call. During the mating season, they make sweet calls like “Gum- Gum - Gum-“.
The breeding season is from January to June. The nest is a deep cup with a dome in dense vegetation inside tangles of creepers, bamboo clump or on the crown of small coconut palms. Both the male and the female take part in nest building. They use small sticks, splinters, cuttings of coconut palm leaf, etc. The typical clutch is 3-4 eggs. The eggs are chalky white with a yellow glaze when laid that wears off. The eggs hatch after 15-16 days of incubation. The chicks take 18-22 days to fledge. The bird is associated with many superstitions and beliefs.
Five subspecies have been recorded. C. s. paroti occurs in Kerala.
The birds occur in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Indonesia. More than four subspecies of the bird have been recorded.
In IUCN Global red List, the bird is included under ‘Least concern’.
