How Brett Deadlifts for Maximum Strength! | The Art of Manliness
Vložit
- čas přidán 2. 08. 2024
- Whenever I post a video of me deadlifting on Instagram, I get bombarded with questions asking why my feet are so close together. If you’ve been wondering about my close stance deadlift, all is revealed in this video! My coach, Matt Reynolds, changed my stance width, toe angle, and how I set my back to help me lift the most amount of weight - the perfect competitive deadlift!
With these deadlift adjustments, I pulled a lifetime PR of 605lb.

WE LOVE BRETT! Congrats on your 605 deadlift!
Hi All, this method worked for me! Better starting position and added 22lb (10Kg) to my Deadlift. From 170 kg to 180 kg, very happy for a 59 yea old. Thanks for the great advice.
Deadlift stance is extremely individual. I’m glad you made this video to widen the perspective of newer lifters because most of them seem to assume that everyone does every lift exactly the same.
Bro, you should post more often, you’re CRAZY strong for your age
No cuts in your coaches explanation, sharp and professional. Love to see so much passion in a person at work
Brett's just been quietly transforming into an absolute beast. So cool! Can't wait for more videos...
Yeah I can’t wait either
Still wating
I'm 66, 150 lbs, just started deadlifting 6 months ago . I've been stuck at 233 lbs for the last month. I've seen just about every video on deadlifting. You are the only one who's talked about reducing the hip moment arm by narrowing the stance and bowing the legs. I tried it today for the first time and hit 255 lbs for the first time. Not only that, but I felt strong doing it, and envision future gains using your method. Thanks for sharing this!
I really liked Eddie Hall's tutorials.

This video has motivated me to get back to the gym. I hope more videos (fitness and non-fitness related) are on the way!
You needed this video to motivate you to go to the gym??? Sorry buddy but you just do not "have it". Time to buy some golf clubs.
Viking Strongman thanks for the additional motivation, bro. As for golf, I’ve never really cared for it.
@@ryancascardo66 - I almost got beaten to death 15 years ago. Never missed a gym session since. Best motivation ever. PEACE!
Yeah! I miss all the aom videos!
Great video Brett. You were the one that showed me SS. You are what people hoped they would look like in the 10 year challenge.
Brett, your podcasts are awesome but I'm so happy to see you back here on youtube. You're the man!
Two years until a 700 pound deadlift?! What a great goal! I'm looking forward to watching your journey!
Not gonna happen
@@sonicnendez depends on what program he was using and what is he going to use, and what diet he used and he will and what form, if he attaned 605 with bad program or skipping a lot of sessions, bad diet and bad form and he now does everything perfect I would say it os possible in one year, but he has to had sucked at diet programming and form and I dont think thats the case, he also has to now do everything perfect. So to sum up... It depends

Awesome video! This explains so much information I did not know about and in such detail. Great stuff.
Brett, you've been missed on CZcams. Loved getting a notification that you were back with a new video. Love this medium for AoM content!

What I love about this video, it explains what a lot of people don’t understand, the difference between a exercise and a feat of strength.
Please post more videos.
Hey Brett have you ever considered doing a meet and greet type of thing? I’ve been a follower for 4-5 years from New England but now I’m living in Oklahoma and would love to get the chance to meet you. Keep up the great content!
Yay! Happy to have a video from you again. We always are here for you, even if you don't want to make videos.
Guy looks like your stereotypical dad yet he can pull 600+ lbs.
Great video!
yoooo alpha!! big fan here
alpha m. Love you alpha
Thanks Aaron!
Hi alpha
What is it about the starting strength community that just breaks it down so well and I understand fully what he means the first time. Most other youtube channels I just end up confused or have to watch like 5 times to understand. The methods work and it shows. 605, that is awesome.
Excellent video as always, Brother! Please keep videos like these and your older ones coming, as they are informative, interesting, and entertaining. Meanwhile, keep up the great work with AOM!
Been listening to the AOM podcasts for a long time but it’s great to see you back on CZcams .
Welcome back! and love the new video editing style looks good!
This technique works so well! I feel the bar move much smoother and can make my reps complete , from bottom to the top.
This is one of the most helpful deadlift videos I have seen . Thanks!
Just looking at this guy I would have never attributed those numbers to him.
It's largely because he isn't on shit loads of drugs unlike 95% of lifters on youtube.
Curious about his nutrition and routine
I can't believe you are back....
I so happy to see you sir welcome back🎉🎉🎉
Where has he been

Hey late to the video here but just wanted to say keep up the great work. I've been a reader since you first started, really can't thank you enough for all the great articles over the years.
I know Im bit late but Thanks for this video, I picked up few things as pre-loading of the bar and made my stance bit narrower. I also pointed my toes out a bit and now my deadlift feels more solid (at least with working sets). Looking forward to try it on my next pr attempt.
What a gem of a video. We need more stuff like this and a collab with barbell medicine-which will never happen...but one can hope.
So good to to see you back
This is an awesome video. I had started deadlifting like this about a year ago since it feels comfortable to me. Definitely would recommend it to experience lifters.
Very glad to see you posting videos again (even if it's only one).
Thank you. That "weird" stance saves a couple of centimeter, but what a difference that makes.
You havent made a video in a while. At first you wont get the views you use too and it might bum you out. But if you keep consistency and always keep your head up youll come back to your glory age and maybe even better. Dont stop brett. We love you
I think the Deadlift is my favourite exercise, it's such a powerful exercise!!
What do you mean by powerful?
@@alexandessattsattie5892 When Hugh Jackson was training for Logan, the deadlift was one if his major exercises
Nice! New video from AoM is always a treat
Really cool that you kept working on this stuff
You're back!
Very intelligent video. I've always used a fairly "narrow" stance, but nowhere near this level. My current deadlift max is 435 LBs, hoping to shoot it up, might try this after I hit 500 lbs.
Brett,
Brotha, I've been following you since 2009. Man, you have come such a long way. I am happy to see this and to get a notification of a video on CZcams and pinterest. I don't do any of the social accounts.
Thank you for this video, and the website and all the helpful content. As always, stay manly!

Man I want more videos from you guys. Can you do more parenting videos! You did such great stuff in the past.
Incredible progress, keep it up!
I Have to say great video, I love you enthusiasm so inspirational. i am going to try and implement some of the things you said into my own life.
It was really cool to revisit this video. Good luck at hitting 700 man! I weigh 225 and am almost to 300. Almost there!
MAC Outdoors You’ll get it man! Don’t give up!
@@ReynoldsStrong1 I appreciate that man! Been training hard and am continuing to progress. I'm impatient so in my head i've been training awhile but to be honest its only been 6 mos. From starting at 85 lbs and almost to 300 lbs in 6 mos on my DL i guess i can't complain lol
Take your time, and let your tendons adapt. Muscle adapts much faster than tendons due to the larger blood supply. Remember to lift with longevity in mind.
This is just what I needed, very informative! Thanks
Great video dude!
Love the channel and love your site!
All the best! -John
Miss the videos! Congratulations on all your progress!
Thats amazing progress! Keep it coming!
Okay, this literally FIXED my deadlift. We're talking night and day difference... Turns out us lanky lads have a pretty mean pull when we figure out how to get our legs out of the way of the bar... THANK YOU!!!
Brett!! More videos please! We've missed you
Ahhh, 😌AoM videos, the best kind of videos.
It is great to see a new video on my favorite channel
Brett is back! Please give us more videos!
Waited forever for a video from you!
This is new to me, just seen it now 19 oct 2020, will give it a go
Those are some solid numbers
This was a great video. Lots of unique information.
Good to see you back sr.
I thought I’d never see the day when Art of Manliness posted another video
Great video!
As well as changing your technique, did you also adjust your program, or remain on linear progression?
Seeing this on my newsfeed made my day
I start this narrow stanc for 2 weeks before i saw this video and never feelt så strong!. For me it work awesome
Thank god a new vídeo
Your lifts are mad impressive!
Awesome Video Guys!
hey man, I just used the same stance, or very similar, yesterday. works like a charm. really interesting. Would love to see a vid about how you program your training these days. And as it is roughly 2 years since you made that video: did you pull 700 yet?
Your back!!!! 💪🏼❤️
Edit: you put on 40lbs??? How!? Make a video on muscle mass gain!! 💪🏼
I believe he did it with Matt's coaching, eating a LOT more, and eating better food. The SSOC guys helped him with his diet.
Yeah, he definitely didn’t just put on 40lbs of muscle. He has obviously gotten fatter than he used to be.
@Someone Thirsty What are you talking about? He doesn't look fatter at all. He even said he's dropped 2 inches off his waist.
@@JakeLovesSteak wrong tag there
Eat food. More than you think you need. Then, train big lifts, and outside of that, limit physical activity. Add weight to the bar, be safe.
Good food. Real food.
Very nice video guys. Great information. I was just doing my squats and dead’s yesterday :)
I love his home gym. Ive been putting some serious thought into getting my own. I think I could build one for under 4K. My public gym is way too small with no designated dead lifting area and only 2 squat racks. When its busy, I don’t bother going until 8pm which is a drag.
Thank you! I love having my own home gym!
ReynoldsStrong you’re welcome! Looks clean, well designed and roomy 👍🏻
@@ReynoldsStrong1 What does something like that cost?
The legend has returned!
Ooh he came back from Victorian era to 21 century to greet everyone.
My god. He posted, what have we done to be graced by this miracle.
Excellent video Brett!!!
605lb. pull is pretty damn impressive. good job
very informative . good work boys!
Brett: So glad you're doing CZcams again.
Great video and really interesting advice. I'm on a 400lb deadlift, so will probably wait until I get closer to 450 before I try this.
The coach in the video recommends this form if you're _competitively_ lifting, if you're just trying to get "generally strong" it's probably a bad idea. But to know for sure I'd recommend some kind of in-person coach who can either help you adopt the form or explain why it wouldn't be necessary at this time. I just don't want you to get hurt is all
@@kirkendauhl6990 cheers mate, I'm not going to start deadlifting with the feet close together form the whole time, I just meant that it will be interesting to try it once I get a bit stronger, to see if the decreased ROM does help with heavy pulls. Don't worry I'd build up to it, not gonna just try and yank 450 of the ground with a form I haven't first mastered 👍🏻
Finalllly you came back
yo its been a long while, welcome back
Love the new video!
Two years ago was the prediction of a 700lb deadlift in two years … lessssggggooooo Brett!
Welcome back!!
That’s amazing information, thank you

Solid information. I miss some words about breathing an bracing though. When do i breath, when shall i brace?
This is wonderful

AOM Back on CZcams? What is this?! This is great!
I decided to narrow my stance and it felt more natural. Plus I hit a PR with the stance adjustments.
