Considering it was written by the man who wrote the character's theme himself, John Barry, it is fairly obvious WHY it fits the character so well, perhaps one of the most fitting themes for Bond, ever.
This movie was out long before my time, I'm 26, but I remember my Gran showing my brother and I classic Bond films when we started getting into Pierce's time in the role. I remember watching this, Doctor No and from Russia with love one rainy weekend, and this was my favourite because of the track. This song just brings me right back to Sunday afternoons watching classic Bond movies, and my Gran telling me about Shirly Bassey. Such a masterpiece, both the song and the soundtrack.
I first watched/heard this in the late 90's after the N64 Goldeneye 007 game came out. That game was what got me interested in James Bond in the first place, and I'l never forget watching this movie back then on one of those holiday James Bond marathons. This theme gave me chills back then and still does.
I'm probably your gran's age. Remember when the new Bond was a big deal. Of course we knew Goldfinger was a baddie when he cheated at golf - the bounder!
It's just not the technical delivery of the song by Ms Bassey that sets this song on fire. It is also the emotion from Shirley Bassey that is dripping from the lyrics. It sounds as if she herself was once one of the girls who fell in love with Goldfinger but found out too late that he loved only gold. She sounds like she is sincerely warning others. It's too late for her she cries out, but for those behind her beware.
Bassey actually went commando to perform this song. She ducked behind a studio partition to remove her bra to give her lungs extra room capacity. So this song truly is big, brassy, sassy and busting out all over.

I just saw Goldfinger in a classic movie palace today. When the Goldfinger theme came on through the extraordinary sound system with Shirley Bassey singing, it gave me chills, because it felt like Shirley was singing in the theater. It is the greatest theme song ever! 👍👍👍👍👍
In 1964, Jimmy Page was a studio musician, and he was one three guitarists to perform "Goldfinger" with Shirley Bassey ... the other two guitarists were Vic Flick and Big Jim Sullivan.
I started with Goldeneye at 10. 2000 year. Then watched Casino Royale last year, then watched Goldfinger a few months ago. What a masterpiece Goldfinger is, I've seen the next two Daniel Craig films after Royale, but they were just alright. Still need to catch Spectre and No Time to Die. But I'm more interested in the older films since I watched Goldfinger.
@InfiniteMushroom Lmao "the culture has fallen", calm down there buddy, this is not The Godfather there is not that much to comprehend, it's still a fun movie. But most of the effects have aged badly, the green screen is beyond obvious and Goldfinger flying out of the plane is just the most goofy shit ever. Also don't forget the rape scene, sorry today's culture doesn't have the degenerate morals of the 60s.
Used to work with a guy that didn't wash his hands after taking a crap. We nicknamed him Brownfinger. We'd play this on youtube whenever he'd walk by and my coworker would sing "Brooooownfiger, he's the man, the man with the ass touch." Good times.
grew up back in these days of 1967. A masterpiece. I was in Jr. High school in San Francisco back in 1967. I was in Art Class and made a collage with a cutout of the woman covered in Gold. never will be a time like the 1960's. we had great T.V. programs, A music explosion across the nation, civil rights, Vietnam war, man on the moon, we had it all. On top of the world.
it sure was a unreal time back then. seemed like it would last forever. I believe after ww2 was over , the 1950, were great, and 1960's also. live your life--try to enjoy. take care-thanks for ur comment friend.
news were the newspapers. I collected boxing, and followed all the fighters back in Ali's day, and would go to liquor store and buy ring magazine. people had more interaction, since there were no cell phones, and people driving on them. also you walked and looked at people. now most look down at their phone. they don't want to interact with anyone. like yesterday I went for a 3 mile walk at this nice park, and three younger women came there, and each one had a I-pad in their hand and were looking at it. give me a break? these people cannot live without it. it was such a great time back in the day. also didn't have all this political correctness, having to worry about what you said to another.
This was the very first full-length movie I ever saw in a theatre. My aunt was sitting for me, I was 11, and while she went shopping she dropped me off in front of this big theatre in the city. I think it was $1.50 to get in and once I was inside I was amazed at the architecture and decor. Everything seemed to be velvet and chrome. The movie really impacted me and I felt like I knew what it was like to be a spy and I wanted to be one. Never forget this movie.
No, Goldfinger is definitely a better movie than From Russia With Love, but my own personal favorite is Dr. No. The first three though were the best three Bond films in my own opinion.
FRWL 🐐 -Best Connery performance -Best hand to hand fight scene in the entire series (against an actual realistic, human, savage assassin henchman and not an unrealistic, emotionless terminator-like henchman in the next film) -First look into SPECTRE organization with Blofeld running the show behind the machinations of his minions -Intro to Q and gadgets -Climactic Bond vs Klebb tension-filled fight with the infamous poison tipped shoe
@@mannysmith5397 FRWL is cool, but Goldfinger is, imo, the first true Bond film with the Bond film formula. Dr. No and FRWL almost feel experimental with what they were doing, and Goldfinger got everything right.
Shirley Basseys classy vocals and the sleazy overbearing trumpets or horns chiming in with the mellow pace of this tune do great to highlight the villain.
When I was growing up in the 70s, people appreciated such theme music, especially John Barry movie scores, so much more than today. I remember it was normal to hear it regularly on radio back then 70s even early 80s.
Fourteen years old, sitting in a rundown movie theatre, the curtain parts, this song starts and Shirley belts it out in a way no other singer could ever do. WOW! In that instant I knew I was about to see the most iconic movie of my life. I mean, after all!!! They dropped a brand new 1964 Lincoln Continental into a car crusher!!!!! In those days you just did not do that!!! 🤣
It was an iconic moment sitting at the "flics" in N London, in 1964, with our dad next to us, as the film exploded into our young minds + souls. In those days the doors were opened to let the public out in the dark! We just remained seated and watched the film a 2nd time! RIP Sean Connery, and in the same year as Honor Blackmann, Diana Rigg! Difficult to believe that German TV couldn't show more than a 15-minute documentary after his passing away had been announced! Could not have happened in West Germany!
Absolutely agree with RacoonEvil below - Sean was the greatest Bond ever when the Bond films were more tongue-in-cheek fantasy for men not the deep psychological explorations of Bond's character we get today. And, for me, "Goldfinger" was the best Bond theme ever with this terrific, powerful performance by Shirley Bassey.
Sorry to hear about Sir Sean. This movie is my fav of his.It came out when I was young, we saw it at a cinema in my town, the same place we saw Hard Days Night with the Beatles.
Munich is the town in Bavaria/Germany, where Gert Fröbe lived the last 30 years of his life and where he's buried too. He died in 1988 by a sudden heart attack just after having successfully fought tongue cancer, that threatened him to loose his tongue, a fate his doctors were luckily able to save him from. As a matter of fact Fröbe was initionally very reluctant to accept the offer to play the role of "Goldfinger", since by the time he'd just played quite a row of villain roles in German and French films and he really feared to be typecast as a villain for the rest of his career. In an interview Fröbe once told, that even his old mother was not amused, even shocked about the kind of men, he had recently played in a row. He reported her having said to him: "Oh, boy ! What did you do there once again...?!" 😁 He had to be convinced by his agent and actor colleaques, who told him, that playing the title role in a James-Bond-movie could be his big chance to gain international recognition and to make an international career as a movie actor, and so he accepted the offer. The last point persuading him was, when the producers told him , they had offered the role to Orson Welles , who had declined. Fröbe was an great admirer of Orson Welles and had made a movie with him in France a few years earlier . He would play again with Welles shortly after "Goldfinger" in "Paris, is it burning?". And so "Goldfinger" became his most famous movie character and the role, for wich he's best remembered until today. In Germany he is considered as one of the greatest German character actors of the twentieth century , both in the movies and on stage ! He was ( apart from romantic roles of course 😁) very versatile and was as great a comedian as he was a great villain . Check for instance his role as Colonel Manfred von Holstein in "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flyin' machines", a comedy , where he played a Prussian officer in an fictional aviation race, that took place in England in 1910. ! 😷👍 A movie he made in GB at the same time he played in "Goldfinger". He is absolutely hilarious in it and stole the whole picture imho, and that in an all-star-cast.! 😷👍
"Do you expect me to talk,...?"

Domingo Naranjo When this movie was made, he couldn’t speak a word of English. Brilliant performance.
Best 007 movie ever
*One* *of* *the* *most* *Iconic* *Shirley* *Bassey* *theme* *songs* *ever* *.*
The best Bond and the best Bond film ever, and that will never ever change. RIP Connery
We're on the same page about "the best bond", but mate, Casino Royale (2006) is something else.
RIP Gerd Fröbe, ein großartiger Schauspieler, der anfänglich den Goldfinger nicht spielen wollte.
Just heard about the passing of Honor Blackman, Rest In Peace 🌹…...and this song by Shirley Bassey always gives me thrills....what a voice, and LOVE that horn section ~ WOW : )))))))))))
RIP Sean Connery. First Bond, best Bond. Passed away at the age of 90. You will be missed.
I just saw Goldfinger in a classic movie palace today. When the Goldfinger theme came on through the extraordinary sound system with Shirley Bassey singing, it gave me chills, because it felt like Shirley was singing in the theater. It is the greatest theme song ever! 👍👍👍👍👍
that note she lands at the end..... chills every time.
RIP Sean, Sean Connery, AKA James Bond
Sean Connery was James Bond. Everyone else was an actor playing a part. May he RIP
_The_ ultimate Bond song ever.
Sean Connery simply the best.
In 1964, Jimmy Page was a studio musician, and he was one three guitarists to perform "Goldfinger" with Shirley Bassey ... the other two guitarists were Vic Flick and Big Jim Sullivan.
So what if he does? No need to be a dick. Plus he is right about Page.
Dave Matheson Thanx 4 the info. One more reason to love this song & Jimmy Page, not that I'd need one.
You're kidding? That's sooooo cool to know! ♫
So this song has some led zeppelin soul in it sort of
@@stephenpeplin7383 He is. Jimmy has talked about this numerous times.
It's been over fifty years since this movie came out, and in fifty more years people will still remember *this* movie over the new ones.
The new ones are Okay, but I think Casino Royale is still my favourite movie
I started with Goldeneye at 10. 2000 year. Then watched Casino Royale last year, then watched Goldfinger a few months ago. What a masterpiece Goldfinger is, I've seen the next two Daniel Craig films after Royale, but they were just alright. Still need to catch Spectre and No Time to Die.
But I'm more interested in the older films since I watched Goldfinger.
@@PopADoseYo Spectre is better than No Time to Die in my opinion, but that's not saying much.
R.I.P Sean Connery
Watched this movie for the first time tonight. Holy shit it's good.
Morgan welcome to Goldfinger
Ive seen this one 100+ times and it never gets old!
Welcome to the Club!
"What does the Club Secretary have to say about it?"
"Oh, nothing Mr. Bond. I own the club."
I feel it's aged poorly, imo. Still a classic, though.
In my opinion this was the best.
Used to work with a guy that didn't wash his hands after taking a crap. We nicknamed him Brownfinger. We'd play this on youtube whenever he'd walk by and my coworker would sing "Brooooownfiger, he's the man, the man with the ass touch."
Good times.
Lmfao
RIP Gert Fröbe, der einzige Gegenpart von Bond, der unvergessen blieb. Ein grandioser und bescheidener Schauspieler!
STILL...the BEST Bond Theme song!!
grew up back in these days of 1967.
As 25 year old, I really wish I could live in late 60s in USA. I don't see any better timeline ever to live.
it sure was a unreal time back then. seemed like it would last forever. I believe after ww2 was over , the 1950, were great, and 1960's also. live your life--try to enjoy. take care-thanks for ur comment friend.
What was it like without the internet? I've been exposed to the internet literally my entire life so i would love to know what it was like without it
news were the newspapers.
How is the Vietnam war a good thing?????
This was the very first full-length movie I ever saw in a theatre. My aunt was sitting for me, I was 11, and while she went shopping she dropped me off in front of this big theatre in the city. I think it was $1.50 to get in and once I was inside I was amazed at the architecture and decor. Everything seemed to be velvet and chrome. The movie really impacted me and I felt like I knew what it was like to be a spy and I wanted to be one. Never forget this movie.
Rest in peace Sean, my absolute hero devastated by the news.
Goldfinger is the best James Bond
Second greatest imo. From Russia With Love is better.
No, Goldfinger is definitely a better movie than From Russia With Love, but my own personal favorite is Dr. No. The first three though were the best three Bond films in my own opinion.
FRWL 🐐
-Best Connery performance
-Best hand to hand fight scene in the entire series (against an actual realistic, human, savage assassin henchman and not an unrealistic, emotionless terminator-like henchman in the next film)
-First look into SPECTRE organization with Blofeld running the show behind the machinations of his minions
-Intro to Q and gadgets
-Climactic Bond vs Klebb tension-filled fight with the infamous poison tipped shoe
Live and let die?
@@mannysmith5397 FRWL is cool, but Goldfinger is, imo, the first true Bond film with the Bond film formula. Dr. No and FRWL almost feel experimental with what they were doing, and Goldfinger got everything right.
Now THIS is a Bond theme. The grand opening, the orchestra, the Bond vibes...
I always loved Bond songs that actually feature the theme itself
Shirley Basseys classy vocals and the sleazy overbearing trumpets or horns chiming in with the mellow pace of this tune do great to highlight the villain.
Nice description
Brilliant piece of music and an excellent theme for the villain, sung impeccably. Still one of the greatest Bond themes ever!
When I was growing up in the 70s, people appreciated such theme music, especially John Barry movie scores, so much more than today. I remember it was normal to hear it regularly on radio back then 70s even early 80s.
I loooove his compositions. It's like, if it touches my heart or my soul it must be a John Barry tune.
The song and the opening images are timeless!!!
This kind of music literally Defines an Era!
Word
That music is so sensual, I love it!
Am I the only one who thinks this is one of the best James Bond theme songs?
no dude it's probably the best opening it's the most bond to me
YES!!! but also like Duran Duran's "View to a Kill" . Sorry grew up in the 80s
Either this or skyfall by Adele
+Mike Decker i prefer diamonds are forever
Yeah cause no one has an appreciation for good music or good movies now-a-days.. Some of the stuff on the radio waves is such garbage.
My favorite bond movie of all time and the best bond song, Sean Connery greatest bond ever!!
Such a beautiful song❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Please dont forget the glorious Goldfinger, Gert Fröbe, who founded the german villains in Bond movies.
As a matter of fact Fröbe was initionally very reluctant to accept the offer to play the role of "Goldfinger",
since by the time he'd just played quite a row of villain roles in German and French films and he really feared to be typecast as a villain for the rest of his career.
In an interview Fröbe once told,
that even his old mother was not amused, even shocked about the kind of men, he had recently played in a row.
He reported her having said to him:
"Oh, boy ! What did you do there once again...?!" 😁
He had to be convinced by his agent and actor colleaques, who told him, that playing the title role in a James-Bond-movie could be his big chance to gain international recognition and to make an international career as a movie actor, and so he accepted the offer.
The last point persuading him was, when the producers told him ,
they had offered the role to Orson Welles , who had declined.
Fröbe was an great admirer of Orson Welles and had made a movie with him in France a few years earlier .
He would play again with
Welles shortly after "Goldfinger"
in "Paris, is it burning?".
And so "Goldfinger" became his most famous movie character and the role, for wich he's best remembered until today.
In Germany he is considered as one of the greatest German character actors of the twentieth century ,
both in the movies and on stage !
He was ( apart from romantic roles of course 😁) very versatile and was as great a comedian as he was a great villain .
Check for instance his role as Colonel Manfred von Holstein in "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flyin' machines",
a comedy , where he played a Prussian officer in an fictional aviation race, that took place in England in 1910. ! 😷👍
A movie he made in GB at the same time he played in "Goldfinger".
He is absolutely hilarious in it and stole the whole picture imho, and that in an all-star-cast.! 😷👍
RIP Honor Blackmon. It was announced today, that she passed away at 94. :(
