  • Partnering with my friends at the Robb Report and the Mercedes Benz Classic Center, we created this video which captures part of the restoration of one of the most iconic cars of all time, the Mercedes Benz 300SL.
This is part one of a two part series. Most of us have never seen a Mercedes 300SL like this before, you must check it out!
Please take a moment to watch this video and share with your friends in the car community!
Thank you Robb Report and Mercedes Benz Classic Center!
And a very special thank you to my good friend who allowed us to capture his 300SL in the restoration process, it was such a treat!
It is also the first ever 100% restoration of a 300SL by the Mercedes Benz Classic Center, which makes it truly special and quite possibly one of the finest examples to be restored!
    Enjoy,
    Dustin Troyan

I am wondering if its not a better idea to send your Mercedes/Porsche/BMW Restoration Project back to Germany and have them do the work. I think the benefits would be Lower Cost, Higher ROI, Higher Quality Job and a nice opportunity to Road Test it through Europe when it done! I imported two cars (1977 BMW 320 & 1973 Porsche 911T Targa) in 1982, from Antwerp Belgium to Toledo Ohio for $350.00/car.

Wow, amazing. The best or nothing, right?
I'd love to see the Pre-war/Vintage cars restorations! I've heard stories that in Germany the original hand tools are kept and used to e.g. cut and stitch the leather seats and bonnet-belts to attempt to recreate parts as close to original as possible, from materials to manufacturing process, as is here. Help us set this rumor to rest.
    However...
On the one hand; It leaves me to wonder, where is the line between restore and rebuild? Completely rebuilt and immaculate as these cars, it almost seems as if it's history has left it, like a replica or sorts. It lost it's soul, it's memory wiped.
On the other hand; if a car was in bad shape, you restore it with the best or nothing, right? So fair enough.
    Theseus' ship all over again.

When I was a teenager my dad bought a 300SL Gullwing. It was bright red with grey leather interior. He was it's second owner in 1964. The car was near perfection with under 20K miles and rated at 96 out of 100 points. He took it to many shows and I was with him at some of them. I still recall one show when he had to leave to make a phone call (long before cel phones) At this show Miss Pennsylvania was in attendance. I was "watching over" the car when she and her group came around and, of course, noticed the car. I had fun pretending that it was mine (I am sure that they figured that I was not, but allowed me my fun). When dad returned I told him what had happened and, of course, he was disappointed for having missed her. Dad sold the car after having owned it for 20 years and was told not to sell it. He kicked himself for the rest of his life for having done so. But, I have many pictures and many memories of my experiences with a 300SL Gullwing.

unfortunately the host seems to be in some kind of comedy or thriller, and has no proper understanding of the 300 SL. The paint finish thats mentioned was never used by MB in period. I had a gullwing in 1959, and I believe it was the only one specially produced by MB with aluminium body panels as well as the standard parts like hood and door skins. That was done for the first owner, and there seemed to be some secrecy attached, probably because MB might not be responsible if anything went wrong. I suspect that the first owner had those panels made by someone else, but have to admit that back then it did seem quite special. I put a supercharger on it, remember it took the dyno past 400 at MB on the great west road in London, UK. The other thing I did was have a solid gearbox mainshaft, as the original was hollow. The rear swing axle could catch you out though, but as long as you understood how to use the throttle, you were OK. Wonderful days!
