I doubt anyone can say enough good things about Joy Leno's Garage videos. But I want to try.
I've never once had the feeling that he's a braggart, or that he's talking down to us. Rather, he's just regular guy, with no hidden agenda, who just plain enjoys sharing his knowledge of automotive history of his cars, with anyone. Of course, he's a natural at interjecting quips of his trademark humor, but never to the point of silly distraction. That, and his videos seem to be around 16 minuets in length; not too long, not too short.
So from me, and all on here: Thank you, Jay Leno.

Why do you find him stuffy? I've never found that really on any of his videos. Jay is one of the most unstuffy guys I've ever heard talk about cars. I find him affable, and one of us, really. He never flaunts his cars or wealth, and is just pure enthusiastic about the mechanics and aesthetics of these historical icons.
Stuffy isn't really a word I would associate with Jay Leno. But hey, each to their own, I guess.

My father was a commercial pilot & CFI in L.A. Some time in late 50's one of his clients was Ross Hadley, owner of the Boyle Maserati, winner of the 38 & 39 Indy 500, and the last foreign built car to win until Jimmy Clark's Lotus in 65. He was at our house with his gullwing, and in our driveway and I needed it moved a little to get the lawnmower past. I was about 13 and he tossed me the keys, my father nearly had a heart attack, ultimately I took it out of gear and let it roll back a little. But I can honestly say the first car I ever drove was a Gullwing!
This has to be in the top 5 most beautiful and classic car designs of all time!
I care nothing for late night talk shows, but I think I've become a fan of Jay Leno the car guy. Nothing like listening to somebody talk about something they love.

his knowledge on cars is amazing
...and, he preps for these videos. He was on TV for 30 years. He understands the value of proper audio/video production and again, he prepares. He knows which car he's going to be filming/driving/talking about and he takes some time before the filming starts to make sure he knows what points he's going to hit. And to be fair, Jay Leno has forgotten more about cars than I and most other people will ever know.

Jay, Have always been a car guy since a young age, now 65. When I was in college I found a Gullwing for $5,000 in a barn and begged my Dad to help me buy it. I told him in twenty years he and I could retire on the investment. He refused and the rest is history. Thank you for sharing my dream that never happened. Just sold my 1954 Porsche, lack of funds to restore. It will be at Pebble Beach next year by Ron Harlan. Someday I would love to drive the cars that I could never afford.
The obsession all started when I was 14 years old and a neighbor gave me a complete Road and Track collection from 1948. Every car I bought, and that was many junkers I could look up there glory days and just dream of the possibilities. I truly enjoy your site. John Schiesel, Santa Cruz Ca.

In 1967 my father bought a Mercedes Benz 200D from Tropical Motors, in Florida. That dealership got a 300-SL roadster around the time of the diesel's first maintenance, and the dealer let my father take the roadster for a spin. After driving for a few miles, I told my father he had to buy it, but he told me the dealer told him the sale price was a firm $3K, and he wouldn't pay that much for a 7 year old car.

I think this car looks great. I wouldn't paint it. I think the patina and faded race numbers are what make this gullwing so unique and special. It looks and sounds like a hot rod while being a cutting-edge 1950s super car. Everyone does these cars shiny and perfect. This example is honest and real. I like that.

In 1989 I went back to Germany. I had been an Army brat living North of Stuttgart in the early '60's. I went to the Mercedes Benz Museum in Stuttgart.Had a great conversation with the gentleman who polished the cars on display. The cars were surrounded by velvet ropes like you see at the movie theater. I got to lean into the gullwing with the doors open to take pictures.If you get to Stuttgart, I recommend the MB Museum.

While in the USAF in 1967 my friend, Paul Weeks, bought a 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe. It was silver with red interior. It was in good condition but not restored. I rode in it a couple of times. It was the fastest car I had ever been in. He got it up to 110 mph on one run, but he wouldn't let any one else drive it. I believe he paid $5,000 for the car. Just before he got out of the Air Force, he sent thhipped the car to Germany to be fully restored. I never got to see it restored. If he kept it, what an investment he made.
Holy, I would think that WAS a fortune in '67! (EDIT: Apparently about $39K today.... A pretty penny for a car in need of a restoration, for sure...)
I know an old Swiss guy who has one of these, plus several other rare European auto-mobiles, in an old warehouse here in Switzerland.
He's very cautious about who sees them - took me about 5 years before I got in there.

My brother operated a German car shop for 35 years. He acquired three of these over the years, sold one and used the money to add three bays onto his shop. His wife's family lived in a town on the other side of the state and I was invited to be the passenger when we drove over for a holiday. I have never been inside a more well put together car. Every detail is solid and purposeful. You are inside a capsule, completely surrounded by a machine that you believe will fly at any moment. And fly it does. At 140mph it feels like it is stuck to the road. No waver. No over travel of the suspension, No sense that it might suddenly yaw to one side or the other. Absolutely no sense of being pushed too hard. Amazing machine.
That engine sound is pure perfection. I mean, when you think of the sound of a perfectly engineered engine, that right there is it!!
It is thrilling that these cars still exist, and someone like Jay is willing to share them so others can get a peek and enjoy.

My favorite car of all time. My grade school friend bought one in 1962 from doctor in Kansas City (we lived in Independence, MO). One time we were driving on I-70 freeway and he decided to push the accelerator to the floor. The car actually got up to 120 MPH and the tach and speedometer were still climbing. I was getting scared because we were coming up to cars doing 65 and 70 MPH so fast it seemed they were standing still, and he had to make terrifyingly quick lane changes. Incidentally, you were curious about the extra horn button; it's my understanding that it was a carry-over from the 300SLR racing car that Stirling Moss drove to win the 1955 Mille Miglia, where Dennis Jenkinson was his navigator and would be telling Moss when there were turns ahead and other obstacles. Since it was run on public roads, the horn button was for the navigator to warn unwary pedestrians. That car averaged almost 100 MPH over the thousand miles of public roads.
One of my favorites from your collection, what an amazing car. You guys really have it tuned well too, it sounds great.

This engine has the desmodromic direct injection, like the DB 601 Engine from the ME 109 producing 1.380 HP from 26 LItres and 12 cylinders what is a synthetic hytech stuff of today against this ???????

What a more simple time! I'm not talking about the 1950's, I'm talking about when this was filmed. The thought of a post war car selling for over a million dollars was extreme.
I revisit this video frequently, & fall more in love with it each time. I think that is in large part to Jay's presentation. I love that he shares these clips with us. I have been around since the website days & they never get old. Thank you Jay, as well to the Big Dog garage crew, & the production crew.
I am 74. I remember when this came out, thinking to myself, this is the way all sports cars can be made, and should be made, but I was just 12 years old, what did I know. Have always loved the look, styling, manufacturing quality, design and thoughtful engineering of this car. Had I the moolah today, I would be driving one. Glad it is in the hands of Jay Leno who walks us through this.
I'm 84 and retired Navy, remember when stationed at Harbor Defense, Long Beach mid '50s a 3rd class(Radioman?)-his aunt left him money/he bought a 300SL and bitched about the price go the am/fm/sw radio...!

I love classic cars with the original paint job and cosmetic damage. It looks like it had an awesome life and it gives the car more value (in my eyes at least). Fresh painted cars still look badass but I think the style of this kind of paint job is my favorite.
No need to restore it, he should keep it just as it is, gives it character.
I meant that some people have cars with impeccable and/or flashy paint jobs but this weathered car tops them all easily. He definitely shouldn't restore the paint... I'd get sad.
I agree. I think it looks fantastic as it is. Restoring it to "Concourse" would destroy the character and history of the car. Like having Botox.

My purely subjective preference would be to restore the car.
I never sign in for hardly anything but ide thought id do it for this, I had my preconceptions about Jay Leno showing off his car collection but after watching a number of episodes i can honestly say this guy is a cool down to earth guy and most importantly a genuine fan motor cars. Look at the time this man has dedicated to following his dream, its admirable, as with anything its easy to look at the end result and be a hater but understand this guy built his dream and deserves it. Very impressed, the average person has trouble getting finance on a modern day bmw, a massive contrast but it shows anythings possible if you work hard...
Donato Libor - same sentiments exactly. I've been avoiding this series since the start because of preconceived notions of Jay from late night tv. So wrong was I. Sorry Jay! It's great to hear him just talk away about his collection and go along for the drive. Such interesting stuff, huge knowledge and such a low key guy. Now I'm working my way through all the shows. I also vote to leave that car's paint as is. Shiny trailer queens are a dime a dozen (or a million a dozen) but to see a true classic in battle worn condition is something special. BTW - Stirling Moss I discovered when I was about ten is my grandmother's cousin. Whaddaya know!

Guys, don’t bring politics into the mix, just enjoy the car and the knowledge/trivia Leno passed on to us. It would have been cool if he had explained the reason behind the chassis design. They were made from artillery barrels due to the shortage of metal in Germany as a result of reconstruction. It’s what was just lying around and when they welded them together to make the frame they discovered how stiff it was for being as light as it was, making it perfect for racing. That is most likely the reason behind why it’s still nice and stiff after all these years.

I visited the Mercedes Benz Museum in Stuttgart
When I was walking around near the Gullwing when a man came walking around. An employee completely dressed in heavy felt. He carried an old style tool carrier filled with plastic bottles. He started cleaning and polishing a car. The care and attention this man showed was like a man being with a beautiful woman. Took his time. Talked to her in a loving tone. I asked him in German if he spoke American. He said he spoke a little. I asked how he got the job of looking after the Museum cars. Seniority helped him but demonstrating attention to the tiniest detail impressed the bosses. At the time the cars were only separated from the public by a velvet rope like they had at the movies. I got some great pictures of the Museum car. I wish I knew where they were.

Le Mans 1955. A Jag of the day had better brakes. That was the problem with racing at the time the cars were too different and rules not strict enough. Racing variant of this car rammed into a Jag that emergency braked and all hell broke loose.

Jay Leno is the best, I recently binged watched many of the JLs garage videos, but this one truly shows how much of a car aficionado he is. Before this I watched Supercar Blonde with a similar racing version, and I knew JL had the Gullwing, but never watched the video of that one.. Well.. looking him talking so effortlessly about all the pictures, memorabilia, telling the story, and driving the car with pleasure just proves that he is one of the rarest real deals that you can find.. Hats of JL, may you be blessed good man!
A guy who used to be my neighbor owned (still does) a fabrication shop for vintage automobiles and bikes. I always wondered why I heard so much about him and his work but he lived in such a modest home.
My dad took me to his shop and it was just an entire garage of Ducati's, Harleys, ect. Every bike out there. probably 50 or 60 of them. HIS personal collection. He also had one of these. When I found out the price of this car, that's when you knew his business was on fire.

Back in the early 70's I knew a guy who'd become a multi-millionaire through his knowledge of antiques. He was a farmer's son and as down to earth as any regular guy.
Doing some work at his business one day, I went looking for him to ask how he wanted the job done and found him in his garage, underneath one of his 1930's Rolls Royces. I said "I thought a man of your means would pay someone else to do that stuff ?". He grinned and replied "You don't get rich by spending it, son". 😁

I love the gear whine, straight cut cogs, very mechanical. I was at White Post Restorations in Virginia once, they were doing a 300 SL, body off. What a frame! I worked at a dealership once, my boss had a Gullwing, perfect car. He had sent it back to Mercedes for the restoration. Sit in it, pull the door closed and your ears popped.
Been watching Jay for years, somehow I missed this one? Amazing. Haven't heard a 300SL like his.

Dad bought a '56 in NYC from Max H. When I was 7. Learned how to drive a stick the next week. He sold it after Mom died in '79. So many memories! I made a special tool and could change injector diaphragm in 40 minutes instead of 6 hours. Hit 156 mph on I-70 in the 60's...Dad drove it 140 mph all day long on a trip to TX. It was a running machine!

I graduated college in June 1967 and went to USAF officer’s training school in San Antonio. I had purchased a new GTO. Most of us fresh college graduates/trainees had new cars. This was the muscle car era; Mustangs, Chevelles, Corvettes, etc. We were restricted on base for a month, so the Air Force had a parking lot for us with a chain link fence. On Saturday, we were allowed to start our car engines, but not drive them. One the guys in my class had a gull-wing Mercedes. Grey in color. His grandmother gave it to him as a college graduation present. I went to pilot training and then to Vietnam and never saw him again. His last name was Cotton. After a month in that training course, we were able to take our cars out on Saturday on the loop around San Antonio. The gull wing was the fastest of all.

My stepdad had a 300SL, not the Gullwing though, he had a roadster, and I may just be bias, but I prefer the more oval headlights of the roadster. I was a little boy when he took me around in it, only later would I understand what he meant by "this is a race car". He inherited it from his father, and later it was sold, long before I was ever tall enough to reach the pedals, sadly.
He even took me to school in it once.

This is by far my favorite video on this channel. I've watched it more times than I can keep track of simply because the 300SL is a gorgeous car and Jay's genuine love and admiration and reverence for this car and its history. The imperfections and the fact that this model isn't a "show queen" is what's so charming and almost approachable about the car and subsequently the video. In my numerous fantasies where I visit Jay's garage, this is always the one I keep coming back to.
P.S., I see an MG Midget hiding back there in the garage. I would love to see a video on that. :)

Geez, what a great car. I've admired the 300 Gullwing for many years. I'm now in my late 60's. I found a well detailed model of the 300 at a flea market. The seller didn't give it away, but I am now the proud owner of that model. Along with the rest of my model collection, it is satisfying. Good to know that Jay and company will keep the prototype up and running.
This channel is just one hundred times better than any TV motoring programme. Why watch anything else? Go Jay!

Ugggg.....I turned down a 300SL Roadster for $2,400 in 1973 as the advice I received from an ooooold school WW2 trained Mercedes (german military, russian front) Mechanic was "Ach....the gull wing, yes, the roaster 'absolutely not......they are worth nothing. Only the gull wing" HInd sight.....lovely. Thanks again. I so enjoy your 'Jay Leno's Garage' site. Just a wonderful use of the web!!

Cars like these are one of the reasons I respect Jay Leno. He loves those old classic cars. I really like old Benz cars. I'll never forget being offered to purchase an old Benz with a 5.5 or something like V8. I don't regret not buying it though. The amount of money I would have spent on that car would have been terrible for me at that time. :)
I'd leave it as is. So much character an history with the paint and interior just throw some clear over it and call it done

@Moto Guzzi lots of Nissan stuff is alomost interchangable with Mercedes parts. All thier multilink rear cars have almost identical goemetry to the w201 chassis which was used in every car after,w124 w210 and up to modern Chrysler rwd cars.
