- I shouldn't be shocked....Again...But I am. Reacting to Polyphia is one of my favourite things to do and O.D was no exception.

Tim's guitar contains someone's trapped soul.
multiple trapped souls*
No wonder the tone is so good
epic play on words there.... trapped ...soul
Whole new meaning to trap music 😂
Ah yes, love me genres of trap and soul
“He is in a relationship with his high hat” LOL!
A relationship like what Chris Brown and Rhianna had?
@@hooduswinkus2657 bruh XD
@@BigTime929 bruh
@@Hopstead I think he means hihat, like the cymbal
I want a relationship like this dude has with his high hat
Tim does most of the writing. Hence why the drums sounds like a hip hop beat. Because that’s where it starts and then he goes how can I put guitar over it. Then goes “I’m just going to flex on this part”
Well that's polyphia in a nutshell
Polyphia might be a "guitar based" band but they're highly rhythmic and they let their rhythm section "breathe" instead of pushing their rhythm section. Yes Tim and Scott are total savages on the guitar, but their bassist and dummer are absolute monsters too
Their names are Clay
@@joshstilman4663 your moms name is clay
The Clays hold it all together. :D
Lol all these polyphia cats are final boss level musicians bro. Straight eargasm ass boss mobs.
My favorite part of G.O.A.T. Is the bass solo
That bass is doing something to me...
Yea that bassline is sexy af it's illegal.
@@juliettemcgee9055 Im a dude but Im reporting the bassist for indecent exposure lol
If u double the speed, it seems like a monster roarin
That completely off-time bass line that loops back in with the guitars - I have been playing bass for 17 years and could only dream of writing something like that. His choice of notes and how he works it in is truly something special.
Never apologize for having a long reaction. You bring a ton of insight and value into these. If we wanted a raw listen to the song we'd go to the song itself.
I like how this band uses pauses in the music as part of the song.
"you cant help but be impressed" - the exact feeling of everyone who has ever listened to even a part of a polyphia song.
Can we take a second and talk about the amazing cinematography in this video? I mean... the techniques used are as damn technical as the song itself. The use of lighting is unbelievable in this video
The music video is based off of a really bad acid trip Tim had
"My brain is gonna explode." Wait til you actually see them live, you'd feel high as kite strapped to a spaceship. Saw them with Sleep Token last year. About 13:30 - 13:53, Tim mentioned he got the idea of writing O.D based on Kanye West's song, Champions and said he likes the "chord progression".
At his VIP fan meet he was saying it was that and also based off a bad acid trip. (That concert was awesome, felt the same)
Juliette McGee I saw them with sleep token as well last December and the energy truly is something else. It’s insane
Honestly!! Such an experience!
I also saw them at that tour.
Polyphia AND Sleep Token on the same ticket? Fuuuuuuuuuuuck
Polyphia does not disappoint! New Levels New Devils has been blowing minds ever since it came out.
🔥🖤🔥
I love those moments when youre trying to explain or describe this, but then you sigh, and then smile. because you know that we know. cause we hear it too.
The drummer has come up with a very unique and good style of playing. Creating rhythm for Tim’s technical and “weird” riffs is something that seems very challenging. It takes some serious musicianship to understand rhythm through those killer guitar riffs. Awesome work by them!
this is my favorite bass performance in a polyphia song, it's just so nasty and fills out the body of the piece so well - plus that shared solo section is purely insane
I wish I could experience music like this guy, he hears so much more than me. Blows my mind how much I'm missing for songs I've heard a hundred times much love man
You are not missing sth if you feel it
this is why music theory is worth learning. I had no intention of being a musician, but if you took away my ability to appreciate the components of music it'd be like taking away one of my senses.
Someone should make an Anime about Polyphia with Tim Henson as the main protagonist fighting Ichika Nito, you can also put Davie504 in there as a fun character.
Kenjong Mendez this needs to happen
Brandon Acker could also play a villan.
What about TheDooo as the headless horseman?
And Larnell Lewis just shows up every so often, says nothing and does random cool guy shit in the background.
Tim has an antagonist vibe tho

“This is.. I don’t wanna say hundreds, this is thousands of hours of hard work that we are witnessing right here and we are very very lucky to be watching it” QUOTE OF THE DECADE ON POLYPHIA. This clip deserves to be showed in a documentary about the band.
I have watched several reaction videos for this band and i find it interesting how every one gives unqualified praise to the drummer. Every one in the band is phenomenal but Aeschliman was simply next level on this album.
Bro you're about to go down a real deep rabbit hole of instrumental Post Rock/Metal. You're gonna have a great time.
Could you recommend some others like polyphia?
@@senditkevin Chon, Plini, Intervals, David Maxim Micic, Sithu Aye, Jakub Zytecki, If These Trees Could Talk, Animals As Leaders. All really good but slightly different styles. I'm sure you'll find a favorite.
Dance Gavin Dance, Hail The Sun, Sianvar, Royal Coda, A Lot Like Birds, Stolas
Covet, Unprocessed
I love that you can’t stop talking and it is SOOO relatable
😂🙋🏼♂️
What you said ~14:50 regarding the technical playing vs an actual song is EXACTLY how I feel about this style of music . I found Polyphia and fell hard, so I started looking for other artists, and they all seem to miss that mark. They all go down technical rabbit holes where , yes, it's impressive..... but it doesn't hit the right feeling of a song.
Polyphia has a very unique element with the hip hop/trap inspired beats, because they hook you with the catchy riifs, then backhand you with technicality in between each head nod.
Exactly dude
6:56 Being a professional composer and music producer, I can only agree with you. Mixing can eventually fix that type of issue. But it's always better to write and arrange the music in such a way that those issues don't occur. This is a more natural way to make all the instruments hearable, and doing this, you often end up with an arrangement and an harmonic content way more intricate and interesting.
Polyphia understood this and it is what makes them great. There are a lot of good musicians, good writers and arrangers, all over the world. Those guys are all of these at the same time.
tim's (the young guitarist) has a youtube page with some vids showing how he writes the riffs. I highly recommend checking that page out.
You know when a South African says "Sjoe" it means you really got caught by surprise xD
14:14 That's what I love about them, they 're virtuosic but their music is lots of fun to listen to at the same time.
You gotta check out 40oz also by Polyphia
Other Polyphia songs I recommend:
Aviator
Euphoria
Look but don't touch
The worst
Nasty
Yas
Champagne
Goose
Nightmare
Finale
I'll be waiting for Nasty
Nasty is a very good song
Finale is a great song too
@@a.r.1611 yeah for sure, first polyphia song i heard. ill add it to the list
their whole The Most Hated and NLND are fire
one notable memory i have with polyphia was definitely when i heard 40oz. my jaw dropped it sounds more like something programmed in an electronic song lol
You have a video in YT by Tim explaining how he wrote the main riff, believe or not, the inspiration was a Kanye West song. The way he explains it just shows how amazingly talented he is, i have known this band for some years now and their evolution is amazing, not technical wise, because they were already so good, but composition wise they have really grown. Tim is a monster !!!
tim has a video on how he produced it.
"I took chords from one song, changed some notes, then I put on the arpeggiator. and that literally wrote the song for me" 😄😄
You should check out the drummer playing this song in studio its incredible!!
When you find the part of the video he used for the opener, it's really satisfying.
Like when they say the title of the movie in the movie.
Look but don’t touch is a must, especially since they released it on April fools.
They had vocals when they formed back in 2010 until early 2012. I think Tim had said they write the guitar parts to take the place of vocals.
Thrilled you made it back to Polyphia - I was among those recommending O.D. and it's my favorite of theirs alongside G.O.A.T. because it's a _challenging_ listen, at least that's the effect on me, which I love. It seemed a bit stressful for your reaction/spot analysis purposes, though. 😁 I'll add a vote for Nasty as the next or one of the next ones.
Since you liked Polyphia and Animals as Leaders, give Unprocessed, Chon and Covet a chance
Covet is great, a little less prog metal and more math rock but the guitarist is amazing
Unprocessed Ft. Polyphia would be a good reaction
Ryan Patershall yeah, Real is a pretty interesting song imo
And Plini!!
Yes! Would love to see some Covet
Polyphia + Jason Richardson playing Aviator doesn't disappoint; one crazy solo in there.
Don't worry about the reactions being long, we love the detail you put into it
Babymetal has a ft with Polyphia called "Brand New Day" on their latest album fyi
I was waiting for you to do this, I CANNOT wait for you to react to Yas with the chon bros
Subscribed because I love your exit message "be safe, And be nice to each other" - we need that in our world right now.
We sure do Luis. We sure do.
I love the offhand, almost very-faintly-optimistically-resigned way you said 'my brain's gonna explode'.
I dont want to say hes their focal point but Tim Henson (the guitarist with the shorter hair) is their spokesperson for lack of a better term so a lot of stuff tends to center around him. Great analysis! Loved listening to it! If you want a great live recording they have a warmup session of them playing 40 oz which is an excellent song by them! You should also check out Jason Richardson! He is the guitarist that Replaced Tosin Abasi (animals as leaders) in Born of Osiris and has since gone on to write his own solo album. His guitar work is on another level!
It's always a treat to see someone enjoying Polyphia :) I also recommend Champagne from them. And for more prog: (without vocals) Paper Moon, by Plini; (with vocals) Hexes by Tesseract, Slave by Leprous, Absolom by Periphery, Lunacy by Soen, Iter Impius by Pain of Salvation, Forget Not by Ne Obliviscaris, Where Owls Know My Name by Rivers of Nihil, and Everyday Ghosts by Thank You Scientist. Just to name a few bands you haven't reacted to already ;)
I love these videos, Polyphia is so underrated! Euphoria, Look but don’t touch, Goose, Real (Feat.), Yas, Nasty, etc.. there are so many good ones I could go on forever lol
OMG! A reaction within a reaction video! How dare you? That's what makes you one of the best! Plus, your reactions are also set within a teaching context which brings everything to another level.
Howzit man, love your reactions! Great stuff getting into Polyphia, they are really something else entirely 👌 Keeping prog really fresh
I was so happy to see this video, i have been waiting for Chase to do another polyphia reaction for so long
I'm glad, thanks to you I discover new band, and I like it !!!
Tha bass makes me want to act up.
I've heard this song tons of times, but I couldn't help but click immediately :)
You really need to do Intervals now, I'd recommend "impulsively responsible" or "belvedere"
been looking forward to another polyphia vid!!!
Dude, you should try reacting to ichika nito, chon, or covet, all sound very impressive in their own ways
I can’t get enough of this song. 😂
I also would recommend Real by unprocessed ft. Polyphia
My favorite song by Polyphia is "Nasty"
I'd love to hear your reaction to it
They make really great videos. A bit of a lost art. There so interesting and tell a story along with the song. "Look but dont touch" is a mind blowing video.
I'm glad you dive into the technical/production side of things. In other words, I'm glad you react with actual knowledge.
From what ive seen Tim Henson, the lead guitarist, is pretty much the producer. He is an Ableton wizard.
EDIT: Also what you mention at 11:25 Tim Henson has actually mixed songs live and said he utilizes the 'fake drop' a lot/
🌟 Damn it. From the first note : I just wanna dance!! Love it & your reaction. 💕 😎 💖
“My brain’s gonna explode”- that’s how I felt like when I first listened to Polyphia. 😅
To this day…still 🙏
So excited would LOVE to see you cover look but don’t touch. I quite literally was so beside myself listening to it. Took me on a JOURNEY.
Jirrre!
First time I've heard them. Thanks for the introduction.
I'll just bang on about Son of a Bach quick.
Again really, just an awesome reaction. I really like how in depth you go with your reactions.
Would love to see a reaction of you on the band Unprocessed. Try their songs "Fear" or "Abandoned".
The live recording for g.o.a.t on their channel is crazy, its the exact same time as the song.
Honestly dude I could listen to you talk about songs all day. You are so good at converting your thoughts into words keep it up. Also check out 'The Worst' by Polyphia, or just anything from The Most Hated EP.
Great stuff! Can't wait for Yas
Polyphia operates on a higher space time continuum than mortals
Oh Tim writes most of the songs, the thin girly man. Love the channel!
Polyphia breaks my brain. They break many brains. There’s many ridiculous players, but the song writing really shows Tim’s music vision.
Right away, I think of Salsa. Extreme Salsa! And I wait for the line of dancers....And then it's Flaminco!
Dude, exactly, it’s got this Latin/Cuban vibe to it!
Very informative reaction! Learned alot from it, thanks!
Nice one, thank you 🙏
The guitarist with the shorter hair,Tim Henson, is the main song writer for Ployphia as far as I'm aware.
OK, I have never heard of them apart from their work with BABYMETAL, but I can really see myself getting into this. Sounds awesome!
Chase: "Cool video."
*_Cue decapitated mannequin_*
Chase: 🤨
😂😂😂
Nice to listen to their songs with you and seeing how you as a musician is clearly as amazed as I am as a no-musical-knowledge-fan. I feel like their album New Levels New Devils is so unique that I cannot pick a genre that fits. Like they created their own, except they are just the only ones playing that genre. You could compare them to Animals as Leaders or Chon perhaps, but I feel like Polyphia is pushing that genre into their completely own territory.
"Excuse the pun" with the most unmoved face ever is one of the most British things I've seen from you :D
Very analytic! I liked it.
Glad you liked it!
Can we pause a second, and remember a small band called Yes 50 years ago
Keep up the reactions man! Would love to see some Chon or Plini on the channel!
Tim Henson's the guy with the shorter hair, wrote G.O.A.T. and OD...I think Tim and Scott normally collab a lot of their songwriting...
I think you'll like Jason richardson , one if the best if not the best technical guitarist right know, check "tendinitis" or some polyphia work with him like "Nasty", its superb.
Lead songwriter is tim btw
Exactly my thoughts at the end, animals as leaders and other bands like them are technical choas. This is music.
polyphia got that ~vibe~
Tesseract, plini, mars volta, between the buried and me next
The guitar is going through a vocoder which is a super cool technique.
It feels almost like Caribbean music at the start, and I just can't hear the rest of the song without feeling that vibe
We definitely enjoyed that. A lot more intense than GOAT but just as impressive and bingeabel
You got a fast net bruh!
You definitely need to check out "Nightmare" by them. It was my introduction to this band and is so awesome!
Also definitely definitely definitely need to do the band vitalism!! Pagan pt 2 will blow your mind!
The Dear Hunter - Waves pls! Song writing is next level.
Theyve got a new album on the way in the near future.
How a review should be!
Yas by Polyphia is pretty great too! It has the guitarists from Chon featured. Definitely worth a listen
Tim makes videos on how he creates song, and they are mind blowing. You should definitely check those out!
Instrumentals always appreciated. Polyphia is a treat. Next up "Vitalism - Pagan Part II"?
Would definitely recommend Impassion by these guys. so slick
Love the analysis! Would love to see some Periphery or Tesseract next...
gock block btw. another great analysis!! from the videos tim henson has posted, he came up with the riffs, and plays over a back track he creates, and then the band comes together to compliment him and add their touch. Then i believe they clean it up with a producer
