Neil Peart is the most "busy" drummer I've ever seen in my lifetime. He don't just keep a beat like a lot of drummers do, he is constantly in motion hitting his high hat, working it with his foot, and using all the other cymbals, rolling on the toms, changing the beats, etc. I didn't really pay attention as much as I have since he passed, but lately I have really been listening to a lot of Rush and watching their videos, and paying particular attention to Neil's drumming. He was a beast on the drums and in my opinion he's the best ever.

Most great bands have one guy that made them great...usually the front man. Rush drew the Royal Flush with all 3 guys. Hard to imagine one band with this kind of talent. RIP Neil.
Great comment. There have been some amazing power trios -- Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, ZZ Top, Triumph (Canadian brethren to Rush), Grand Funk Railroad, et al -- and Rush certainly ranks up with the very best !
This one is my favourite too. The beefed up guitar in this version makes it just as good as the album version. Alex Lifeson is without a doubt one of the best and most underrated guitarists in rock.
Rush definitely has songs with over the top schemes and bigger "musical statements" but this song is just so clever. The changes between sections really push the song along and create a sense of urgency. Best example of 80s Rush to me .
I agree - only because this track introduced me to Rush and I'd have a list as long as my arm if I tried to pick my 'other' greatest songs. I remember driving with my friends to go surfing at Huntington Beach in the mid-70's listening to 2112 cranked up- getting stoked (and stoned:) before paddling out. We'd never heard anything like that! Geddy's voice was sky high and the musicianship was spectacular! It still sounds fresh, 50 years later!
A very good Friend of mine was riding in my car on day and he asked " man do we need to listen to Rush"? I said no we don't! I pulled the car off the road and stopped. He said what are you doing? I said letting you get out and walk because I'm listening to Rush. You see it doesn't matter what anyone says about Rush good or bad. And it sure doesn't matter what is said about Geds voice. I've heard it all. But since 1974 when I 1st heard them on WMMS I was hooked. True fans who love rush as I do just don't care what anyone says about them.
jasper7522 You must be from Cleveland the rock 'n' roll capital of the world. You probably know this already but WMMS is credited by Rush on Rush's first album for giving Rush airplay to get their feet off the ground.
Yeah- that's shitty. Your friend had a point. There's nothing worse than someone who listens to the same band over and over and over and forces their friends to listen to it as well
What makes a drummer go from good to great? It is not his technique or his speed, because there are hundreds of drummers with those requirements, but greatness, how does a drummer become that? Well, with the impact it has on the lives of other people. Neil Peart not only created a drumming style that influenced drummers around the world maybe more than any other, he influenced people who don't even play drums! Neil Peart is more than his drumming, he is more than the spectacular solos, more than rythms that no one had played before, more than incredible fills that are a superb mix of taste and timing. He is a mirror as a drummer in the whole expression of the word for so many people, that he only can be remembered as one of the greatest drummers in the history of music.
Great comment and I agree 💯. His sound itself was SO big and unique, and was SUCH an integral part of everything Rush was, that he is absolutely irreplaceable . Peart, Bonham, and Palmer - in no particular order - are my all-time best 3 rock drummers. There are scores of other great drummers, but those 3 were/are in a league of their own.
We live a short drive from Lakeside Park in Port Dalhousie that of course inspired Neil's lyrics to the song...where he worked as a teenager at the summer fair. The willows in the breeze are still there, as is the lighthouse and (newly re-constructed) pier. And now they have a new *Peart Pavilion* named in his honor at the park - a beautiful facility. RIP Neil - your legend will live on for generations. Your lyrics and rhythms were a huge part of the soundtrack of my youth and great memories.
RIP Neil. I wish I had a chance to meet that guy while he was alive. I can't fathom how a man who was a hero to others on drums decided to go out and take more drum lessons. But its apparent in his playing how good he wanted to be.
PenTheNinja For me it's just too difficult to put him at #1 without mentioning John Bonham as well. Neil is such a perfectionist and is so precise it's almost not human. Both are (or in John's case was) brilliant. So happy to have seen them both. Incredible does not begin to describe either of them.
@@jasonbroten7956 The difference between Bonham (and I am a HUGE fan of his as well, and of Jason!) and Peart is that Bonham may be one of the greatest pure rock drummers in history, but Neil is perhaps the best percussionist of all time. He can play anything from Rock to Jazz and has created rhythms that new music notation had to be invented to document. Neil has worked with all the major manufacturers from cymbals to drum heads to pedals and helped engineer new methods of building sets so that his rhythms could be replicated. He has gone head to head with the best (Ed Shaughnessy, Buddy Rich, etc) and left them mesmerized.
There was a father and son dressed as Analog. I turned to them and went "THIS IS YOUR SONG!!" and with eyes wide open they nod in agreement haha classic moment that will live in my heart forever.
Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson are right to say RUSH is over. Theirs no one that has the genius drumming ability of Neil Pert not to mention his Shakperian ability at writing lyrics which inspired millions. Something he is never credited for but ought to be.
The line "Well some will sell their dreams for small desires and lose the race to rats. Get caught in ticking traps. And start to dream of somewhere to relax their restless plight. Somewhere out of a memory on lighted streets on quiet nights." It just seems to touch way too close to home that its frightening. That line gets me everytime. No wonder this is my all.time favorite song by them.
Thanks Troy, I can't believe that 8 years have flown by so fast and more than that, the events since then. In the Heaven that I believe exist, you and Neil have a had a conversation or two about philosophy amongst other things... Thanks for taking me to this show... This was the last time that I would see you or Neil in person... May God bless you both!!!
@@anthonynasti1279 Geddy was a monster up to 2004, after that he lost a lot of his upper register. But he sounded great on his last tour, he made a bunch of changes to his diet and that seemed to “brighten” his voice.
This song takes me somewhere, idk how to describe, but at my best; I'm a teenage martian in the cosmos in the 80's, and I through no way in knowing, have come across an audio signal, I am experiencing sound in a rhythmic pattern for the first time and during my ventures, the music adds to the speed of my travels and enlightens me in a way, the galactic highway has now become a thing and otherworldy do I soar
+Carlos Rafael Suzzarini You said it!This is where it all began for me. Heard this when I was 15 years old in 1982 and it was like a hammer blow. I remember thinking 2 things - who are these guys and how the hell do they know about me! Not sure what hit me first, the musical virtuosity or the lyrics. It defined me to a tee at that time. Then of course I went backwards through their catalog and moved forward with them. Been a GIGANTIC fan for 33 years and I have loved every minute!
Neil is immortal, but Alex and Geddy no less. Can't believe there's only 3 members producing such fabulous music, rich and full, sounding like a whole orchestra. So a big up to all 3 legends
What a towering piece of music this is. It works equally well as social commentary and musical genius. How they keep everything together with such irregular time signatures beats me. I can't think of another band with such talent.
There are those who play instruments and those who are musicians. These men are musicians of the highest caliber.

I love all the nerds at rush show's air drumming along! So good!
+Steve Bingaman not necessarily nerds!
+Steve Bingaman Think I would be doing it too. Can't play the drums to save my life and cant dance lol
+zvonko krupilnicki Come on, RUSH are self-confessed nerds
+Steve Bingaman im the biggest nerd there .lol!
+zvonko krupilnicki yes. Nerds. All of them. Myself included.
NEIL PEART. ONE OF THE GREATEST DRUMMERS THE WORLD WILL EVER SEE & ONE OF THE BEST BANDS(along with YES & KING CRIMSON) THE UNIVERSE WILL EVER KNOW.
Ged's switch at 1:38 and the bass riff that follows is probably my favorite part of any Rush song. Never gets old!
Ged does more bass shred playing on that riff than most bass players in their whole careers!
We all know Geddy is the greatest living bass player:) But isn't it awesome to see/hear him play the keyboard too! just love it.
lancetop I agree....he seems to be more comfortable pulling the fat strings , but when he goes to the keys he is a class act by himself!
These guys got better with age and most people never even knew
Subdivisions IS the anthem of our generation! RIP Neil Peart! And long live Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee!
RIP Neil.
I wish I had a chance to meet that guy while he was alive.
I can't fathom how a man who was a hero to others on drums decided to go out and take more drum lessons. But its apparent in his playing how good he wanted to be.
IF YOU haven't been to a RUSH concert and seen them live you haven't lived. These guys are Incredible❗❤
i'm 14 ok please dont tease me
Millions now dying will never live.
Seen them half a dozen times, once front row. It was almost magical
Quite possibly one of the greatest drum tracks ever recorded!
Saw this tour in Helsinki Finland with my bro and my Swedish buddy Per. Unbelievable show.
Neil is absolutely mesmerizing to watch on drums! He is fantastic
Greatest drummer I have ever seen or heard
PenTheNinja For me it's just too difficult to put him at #1 without mentioning John Bonham as well. Neil is such a perfectionist and is so precise it's almost not human. Both are (or in John's case was) brilliant. So happy to have seen them both. Incredible does not begin to describe either of them.
Without Neil there is no famous Rush!
One of THE greatest drummers to EVER hold a drum stick...PERIOD.
There was a father and son dressed as Analog. I turned to them and went "THIS IS YOUR SONG!!" and with eyes wide open they nod in agreement haha classic moment that will live in my heart forever.
Neil was unbelievable. Amazing drummer. He and Max Weinberg the best that I saw
Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson are right to say RUSH is over. Theirs no one that has the genius drumming ability of Neil Pert not to mention his Shakperian ability at writing lyrics which inspired millions. Something he is never credited for but ought to be.
God damn, Neil Peart was a lyrical genius. I still can't believe he's gone. This band was my entire childhood
R.I.P Neil " The Professor " you re inspirations to drummers in the world......
Neil kicking Azz on the drum kit. RIP🇨🇦
Almost 40 years old and this song is still relevant. That's saying something.
As long as there on teenagers on this planet, this song will remain so much more than just relevant.
Neal is brilliant. He is a master of timing, and he called it flawlessly: Go out strong. Leaving good memories. Thank you, Rush.
Never have 3 people been so connected as them.
40 years later, the resonance of this masterpiece!!!
Part of my heart died when Neil passed away. What a loss to humanity and music! 😢
Geddy's voice here is not what it was, but they more than made up with it -- incredible energy and musicianship.
As you get older, your voice drops in vocal tone. Happens to everyone
Me Nombre he doesnt try to replicate the album he tries to give it a different tone which is very effective
I thought Geddy delivered his best vocals of the 21st century on the Clockwork Angels tour.
@@anthonynasti1279 Geddy was a monster up to 2004, after that he lost a lot of his upper register.
But he sounded great on his last tour, he made a bunch of changes to his diet and that seemed to “brighten” his voice.
Was told to scale it back or could get throat cancer
Their lyrics and skills are INCREDIBLE!!!!
Geddy Lee play difficult lines in bass, synth, keyboards, sing.... OMG....awesome artist.
and neil....rs....no words... :)
They got skills, to pay the bills, and popcorn!
The harmonics in that solo are epic!
The best Band of the World!!!!!!! Forever!!!!
RUSH has to be the greatest band to ever grace anyone's ears...
this song is amazing it shook me when i was a teen and it still does after more than thirty years
+Carlos Rafael Suzzarini
You said it!This is where it all began for me.
+Carlos Rafael Suzzarini Song is 1991, so it is 24 years old.
+Tim Hughes No It Is 1982. My bad.
+Wes Rogers Ditto I too felt the same learning the keyboard parts now finally hope to cover it this summer
being a teen now I find this song one of the most relatable out there, makes me feel like I'm not alone in being an outcast, Rush is the fucking best
Saw this tour in Helsinki...was fantastic. My bro and my buddy Per had a great time with fantastic musicians.
You are sorely missed Professor. You left this world much too soon. Rest peacefully with Selena and Jackie.
4:27 I never get tired of repeating this part.
The Clockwork Angels tour was so, so good. I love that they bought back so much of the 1980s' material.
Neil is immortal, but Alex and Geddy no less. Can't believe there's only 3 members producing such fabulous music, rich and full, sounding like a whole orchestra. So a big up to all 3 legends
R.I.P. The Professor......G.O.A.T.
I remember my childhood listening to Rush in my room playing air drums.☹
Don't think anyone stirred the spirit of an air-drummer like Neil Peart. His skills were simply on a whole new level of awesome.
4:34-4:38- The "Lifeson" Chord. Amazing. It's in nearly every song on P/G.
Man, I miss these guys. Seeing the Rush cover bands are life support, but nothing beats going to those past Rush shows.
Anyone who grew up in the 80’s Subdivision’s knows what this song is all about. Zo meaning full & powerful! Kinda long for those days…..
The best drummer rest in peace
What a towering piece of music this is. It works equally well as social commentary and musical genius. How they keep everything together with such irregular time signatures beats me. I can't think of another band with such talent.
I was there , what a show bad ass PEART on drums sticks flying in the air and not missing a beat.
The perfect demo of true skill. Geddy playing synth with feet, bass with hands and singing. Rush are simply epic
Seeing these guys live is a religious experience ❤️
Rest In Peace, MASTER Peart!!!!!
What an amazing song. May be my favorite Rush song 🔥
Three masters of their craft. Lucky to have seen them live once.
