@@Camel_glasshouseagreed, without a doubt, but the distance in talent between Layne/Chris and the others is astronomical. The other 8 aren't even in the same universe as Layne and Chris in my humble opinion.
Cornell easily outshined Staley as a singer, no question about it. it's like dude said, this is a layne staley channel so of course he is one, but he couldn't touch Cornell.
@ChromeCobra420 Sure, Cornell is the better singer. No one can sing better than him, and I love him. But we're talking about "Grunge," and Layne was unique. The depth and range of his voice, creativity, and raw power put him at the top of Grunge singers. In fact, he is the quintessential Grunge singer.
Yeah. Super versatile. He could make his voice sound like the singer from whichever band he was ripping off on any given dogshit hack track that he was recording. He's the most famous local bar cover band singer ever.
In all honesty I reckon Kurt should have been lower I mean they were a good band but he wasn’t a good singer he just screamed, the rest had proper technique and skill to their voice
Kurt did cool things with his voice in addition to singing. Some of it was akin to rap as well, like weird forms of deranged rhythmatic storytelling, squealing and moaning, intentional voice cracking, etc, so interesting. If this were an American idol contest, you could rank him low, but his voice was so much more than that, and in the right context, you could also rank him higher because of his creativity.
He is such a talent from a very early age, huge fan of him and Silverchair during my teenager years, he's amazing singer, one of the best in the grunge with Layne

I think Chris Cornell is an objectively better singer. Especially listening to some of his acoustic work. His phrasing and improvisations are creative and sensitive and just impeccable. But Layne had a voice that was so perfectly suited for their style, plus his harmonies with Jerry, it all just worked so well together that I can’t even dispute Layne being #1. Chris is an extremely close second though, in my opinion.
@dirkdigler2245 I can understand that. For lots of people Eddie's voice could be hard to listen too. Scott's as well. Layne definitely had a bigger vocal range than both of them
