9 years ago, my colleague at that time who is Korean said his 9-year-old daughter came home at 9:00 P.M everyday. The compeitition in Korea is so overwhelming. A lot of school kids/girls have to go to different institutions to learn things such as English, music etc. It's very common for a Korean high school student sleep 3-4 hours a day in their senior year to prepare for entrance exam of college. Not a Korean, but the first comment is either a troll or willingly foolish. Korea of the 70s and 80s was a growing economy with thousands of available jobs. There was no housing crisis (or at least it was not so pronounced). The baseline standard of living in the 70s was low, which means fewer expectations. Now things are different. Korea is an industrialized economy with a housing crisis, an exorbitant standard of living and an oversupply of talent. Its almost like life is worse off for the new generation despite technological innovations...

And thanks for giving some insight about Korea! I'll ask my last (and very stupid) question: based on your experiences and what you heard from older generations, would you say that your parents' generation was happier despite grueling working conditions?

I've watched many of these as I've lived in Korea for 15 years and this video missed many things. Money is part of the problem, not the main issue, but if you interview people on the street they will give that as a simple answer. Family systems are still very conservative and younger women especially do not want to get trapped in the older generations idea of family.
Having children is a career ender or at least a huge career setback for most women here, the women I know who took 1 year off after giving birth were treated very poorly by their companies when they returned and for men it's mostly unthinkable. If they choose to become a housewife then they are completely reliant on their husband for the rest of their lives and the husband also has the burden of having to be the sole money earner for the rest of his life too. If they get divorced or their husband loses his job then it's basically game over.
    Other factors I've noticed:
    - Lack of high quality flexible or part-time jobs as people have to choose full time very long hours in the office or high school wage part time jobs. There are almost no opportunities for housewives coming back to work.
    - Older/younger generation extreme culture gap. Multi-generational support for raising children is much less common and also more difficult due to the generation gap. It also just causes a lot of stress/conflict for many people here.
    - Poor mental health care, high stress lives and very high depression/suicide rates.
    - Culture change no longer seeing marriage and children as an outright necessity.
    - Education system is literal hell and young people don't want their kids to experience that.
    - Korea transitioning from a very patriarchal society causing a lot of tension between men and women.
    - Extremely competitive society where appearance/job/money are highly valued.
    - Housing affordability, especially in Seoul.
Basically you have to really, really want to have kids to overcome all the challenges of having children in Korea.

Bangladesh has one of the sharpest birthrate declines in the world. They were having 7 babies per woman in the 1970s and now it is 1.8 births. Mainly because so many young single men went to work in Gulf countries and live in Male Only Labour Camps, and so many young women started working long hours in garment factories. So young people never had a chance to meet up and procreate. This process will probably worsen and spread to India and Pakistan as more young men leave for the Gulf states to work.

As a Korean I just see this as a natural phenomenon. Did you know that South Korea has highest population density in OECD countries? and half of that population is living in Seoul metropolitan area? The tragic recent crowd surge that killed 160 people was not a coincidence. I myself feel that there are just too many people in Seoul whenever I go to wherever the places. Plus, my generation had to go through incredible competition at schools and job markets thanks to high population. I personally studied at high school until 11pm along with my classmates. I feel that after getting a job, I finally am free and living my own life. Many people don't want to become obliged again. I would have to work my ass off to afford education and housing for my family. At least thats what I have seen my parents do their whole life. About the education part, of course we do have a choice not to send our kids to expensive private academies or English kindergartens. However, probably because of high pop. density, it's so hard to ignore other people. Therefore, you either show off your fancy trophy with luxurious lifestyle, or you don't get one at all. Having a dusty and broken trophy is considered shameful and miserable, so people just don't get one at all, with excuses of "I'm working on getting a fancy one too."

I find it crazy that the most important reasons were not even mentioned in this video. First of all, there is growing movement in South Korea called the 4B's/4 No's, it's women that say no to dating men, marrying men, having intercourse with men and having children with men. The percentage of assault and domestic abuse is insanely high in South Korea and it is always glossed over in the media and their romantic KDrama's do not help. The society is also extremely conservative; women are expected to do literally all of the childcare, fathers do almost nothing. But with the cost of living, women also need to work. So they do all of the household work, childcare and still need to bring in income. On top of that, the wage gap between men and women is one of the largest in the world in South Korea.
There are also other things, like unmarried women not being allowed to have ivf or sperm donation. A famous celebrity there had to go over to Japan to get sperm donation, because South Korea refused it because she is not married.
When a society places so little value on women and makes their lives so hard, there is no reward in motherhood.

In the media, children are shown only as a burden, sleepless nights, money drains, having meltdowns in public spaces, getting bullied at school, etc. Good sides are barely shown at all. Some mom on social media show off their cute babies and toddlers but I think people look at them the same ways as cute pet videos, cute yes but so much work, not worth it. I've heard a substantial amount of women get some kind of baby fever in the age of around 26, but nowadays 26 yr olds have barely started their work-life, feels like they just started to actually have a salary and be able to buy something. Regardless, the age of 26 comes surprisingly quickly and many feel they're not ready and don't have enough money anyways, so the baby fever passes if there was any. At 35-40 they wake up and realize it's now or never, starting at that age, it's very likely it will be a one child family, not bad but far from that 2.1 desired average.

When a country become rich, it's young population don't want to have kids anymore, having kids is a old conservative traditions in every part of the world. Instead young people want to enjoy life with the money that they are earning. Also demands of relationship and responsibilities of bringing up kids becomes a boogyman for youth. It's not just Korea by the way. Even in USA, it's migration from Africa and middle east who are technically conservative people are having kids. White people with rich background are not having kids or getting married. So Americans also have this same problem, it's just hiding in the plain sights because of immigration in USA.

Having a child in Korea is cheaper than US. In US it is MUCH more expensive. Lots of koreans dont need car for commute, healthcare is cheaper, monthly rent is hundred of dollars cheaper, in general I see koreans and east asians spend a lot of their money on luxury designer brands. Women simply want to be making money and not spending it on baby or having to stay at home to care for babies or have to spend money on childcare.
I get it in a way. But its not that expensive to live in SK. I think its more about not wanting the stress of not having more money which compels many to not want to essentially waste their time on raising a child. Raising a child means unpaid labor and childcare basically since thats what often happens with having a kid, you arent paid a full time wage like a job. When developed societies are used to a higher standard of living versus under developed countries, they rather maintain their lifestyle than focus on kids.

I believe the attitude with having babies are different for Koreans. I was on a long flight with Korean airlines coming back overseas with my Vietnamese wife. Our 13 month old son kept crying every 2 hours or so and I’ve tired my best to keep him quiet. Unfortunately 6 young adult Korean passengers complained about our baby to the fight attendant. Fortunately the couple next to us from the states were very supportive.
When we finally landed on to our connecting flight in Korea I needed hot water for the baby milk powder and no place was open in the airport at 11pm except for this small coffee shop. I waited in line and asked the barista while holding an empty baby bottle for hot water and offered to pay. He looked at me angrily and said “NO HOT WATER HERE”.
I was shocked to see how rude this person was. I walked back to find my Vietnamese wife and she said that’s okay. If this person had kids they would understand, but they don’t.
In Vietnam everyone I’ve met love seeing children and encourages raising a family house hold with kids. But I’ve noticed in developed countries family and children are not a priority. As a father I get treated as an annoyance with my one child.
This may not represent all Koreans but that was the attitude I got with my baby.

Im white Australian and i plan on having kids later because i want to build cashflow before becoming a parent. i dont know if that is going to be in a relationship or not. Having a child is not an obligation, its a hobby. In order to be a good parent you will be spending a few million these days to bring a child up and its just getting more expensive and that amount doesnt even cover the cost of wages lost due to time off work.
The work cultures here can be supportive towards parents. its not great but its a hell of a lot better than Japan or south Korea of which have some of the most toxic work forces in the world. Cost of childcare is a huge factor here and ive heard it is as well for south Korea and japan. The cost of putting your child into childcare is so expensive that parents have to honestly consider if its even worth going back to work. Careers are so competitive in South Korea and Japan that women will not risk taking time off to raise a family because it will ruin their ability to return to their job. Furthermore, the level of sexism in these countries is still decades behind western countries. Women are seen as the traditional housewives of the 50's and are expected to do all of the housework by themselves and make sure they are feeding their husbands. As a result after getting married many women end up cutting back on their hours at work or leave work completely to live on the one income for the family (both due to outdated views on daily dynamics and the sexism at work).
This has been my general observation of watching a lot of content from Korean and Japanese youtubers over the last 10 years. I dont know how accurate it is but that is what i have gleamed. I used to dream of living in either Japan or South Korea but i have decided that my values do not align with most people who live in these countries and i would likely find it very difficult to live there.

People don't really understand how much it really costs to raise kids in Korea; probably the highest in the world due to the 'after school' culture. You see, in Korea if you don't send your kids to after school academies they will never be able to enter the top Universities, or even decent Universities. It's not an option. In America, if your kid is really smart that child will probably end up getting scholarships and even money from the government if their household is poor. So you can still make it if you're really smart but poor. That's not the case in Korea. If you don't send your kids to academies they have next to zero chances of getting into any top universities and in Korea your university dictates your whole future. It's not like in America where you can get your act together in your mid-20s, bounce back and go back to school and make a career. In korea, it all comes down to that University entry exam during high school. I heard the average amount a Korean household spends on their kids' education before even getting into a university is around 200k.

The main purpose of going to top academies is because those academies have all the information necessary for the students to get top grades to be able to accepted to the top universities. You cannot get this information anywhere else and mothers never share this information with anyone, not even with their close friends. Even getting into an ok University in Seoul is super hard, people do not understand how hard the university entry exam is. The university you go to in Korea dictates the rest of your career life; there are no do-overs after you get older. I think you can take the exam a maximum of 3 times, once per year something like that. Home schooling will not be viable because this exam is based on how much you memorize and the information you need to memorize is mainly owned by the academies. The whole system in Korea was setup this way.

The problem with low population runs deeper. Before fixing this issue, they need to work on decreasing their reliance on big conglomerates, creating new cultural standards (ie education, social status, values rooted in Confucianism), and building new cities. Things in SK are so concentrated. 50 percent of population lives in Seoul. Everyone wants to go to the same three universities. Everyone wants the same jobs. The conglomerates make up most of their economy. Only a few people will succeed as social mobility becomes harder and the top becomes narrower. There’s so much pressure early on to succeed and this makes life harder, especially for young kids. They’ve dug a deep hole that’s hard to get out of. It worked miracles for them to rebuild their war torn country and pushed them on the global stage but to have a greater future they will need to do the hard and difficult work to set up the next generation and beyond.

I am a single Korean man in mid 30s, never married, running my own business which I have invested all I have saved up to date, who does not own a house. I come from a more-than average household, having studied at private boarding schools in Canada since middle school, with my parents' home valued at roughly USD 2.5M(for less than 90 sqm) located in Gangnam. I am very glad that I found your video today because most if not all media today puts all the blame on the government instead of the cultural background.
The reason why Koreans refuse to give birth or even get married in the first place is a combination of multiple causes. I would admit that we Koreans have a very unhealthy mindset of life, hence Koreans also rank number one in the world for committing suicide.
Like I said, this is a combination of bad causes. Our parents' generation were the boomers straight after the war, which means they were born in a poor country and have experienced vast economic growth. During their times, overstepping your classmates for acquiring better education, working for well paid conglomerates, devoting your whole life for your family has proven right all the times and their kids, we in 30s and 40s, have grown up heavily under their influence. There were a small number of certain careers our parents' generation preferred their child to be working in, there was hefty competition between parents overshadowing each other to prove their wealthiness and this unfortunately is carried on to the next generation.
Speaking as a direct member of the 'aging singles', I can see so many of these aging singles, regardless of sex, set up excessively high hopes for their spouse. I assume this phenomenon derived from our parents' competition of displaying wealthiness during the strong economic growth but we Koreans always compare ourselves to others in what they have spent on and we Koreans simply cannot fall behind others. We Koreans somehow need to display that we are keeping up with others. I find this mindset EXTREMELY TOXIC. I could offer some generosity for some sort of expenditure but not when it comes to housing. I guess this is a common phenomenon in every other developed countries but housing has really gone out of hands in Korea for the past two decades. Because the soar in price of housing has never collapsed, our sick generation decided it is never too late to jump into this train to nowhere, deliberately draining more than half of monthly income for TENS OF YEARS to pay mortgage for an unnecessarily overpriced house. MANY aging singles here in Korea do not think it is adequate to start off a family in a lesser form of affordable housing than in an affluent modern condo because they don't want to lose in this stupid competition. On the other side, people who simply cannot afford that kind of mortgage fall into the state of desperation. These people, in most cases falling behind financially, decide to go on maintaining expenditure to keep up with other wealthier ones without saving a dime, worsening the declining marriage/birth rate.
In my case, I had two partners since my late 20s, dated each of them about 4 years with serious discussions over marriage. Both of the ladies did not want fluctuating income like how my business generates and they couldn't get along with my idea of taking chances of success, like how I have invested all my savings into setting up my business. They rather thought investing my savings into down payment for mortgage was a far better idea. Both ladies left me in hopes of finding someone making more 'rational' and 'stable' financial choices. How can every newly wed begin marriage in a luxury condo worth 1M? Is marriage a raffle or something?
Yes, I do agree with the young couple who instantly answered that the government aid at current level does not convince them to have babies. I too, consider it as a promotion to rob more tax off of our future kids. ALSO NO, injecting money into having kids is not going to solve this matter at its core. It's the morality of Koreans that needs to be changed, whether it's the government or the individuals.
A little side note. Koreans were against Shinsaimdang printed on a 50,000 Won banknote because her works are questionable compared to King Sejong, the person printed on a lesser, 10,000 Won note.

    • @myautobiography9711
      @myautobiography9711 Před 11 měsíci +1

One more important fact about the intensity of this problem.
Entering 2020s, combined with record breaking lows in birth rate, Koreans begin to realize what is expected to come in near future. The population for people born in the 1960s, in that one decade alone, is 8.6 million. That is close to one fifth of this entire nation, probably exceeds one third accounting those born in 1950s and earlier. The imminent loophole is that these immense number of those born in the 1960s will retire sooner or later in this decade. That's right. We have less than 6 years left. This means the conflict between the working generation and the retired generation is greater than it ever was and inevitably WILL BE GREATER in the upcoming decades when one single laborer born after the 2000s might have to pay pension for two grannies alive by the time we reach 2050. Under today's life expectancy, the majority of boomers of 1960s will likely be still alive as well.
What's even worse? The damage to Korea's demographics has already been done and the only two ways out of this problem are either heavier, I MEAN HEAVIER tax or to fill that void with immigrants. I, as a fellow Korean and having lived in the west for many years, think that Koreans are the baddest mfers on this planet in terms of racism and the current immigrants being laborers from developing nations is not going to make racism among Koreans, whether immigrants or not, any better.
Like I have mentioned in my original comment, Koreans disapprove fellow Koreans to begin with. This wrong morale has left farmer men living in countryside with no option than to 'import' brides from developing nations and it has been this way for a long time, left as it is because nobody gave a damn about it. Let me be honest with you, now rural communities are experiencing discrimination the other way around as majority of kids are multi-ethnic. The population unaware of this in cities will get surprised by the time when every surrounding voting district will have a non-native governor elected, probably two or three decades later. Next step? Low life Koreans will disapprove mixed ethnic people living a better life than themselves, conservative Koreans are going to hate those supporting the mixed ethnic groups, discriminate mixed ethnic groups blaming all modern problems like Nazis did to Jews in the past. I wish I can be blamed for being wrong after all.
I don't see any other options. Honestly, Korea is not a place you come in pursuit of better life when you are already living average or above in your home country. Our immigration demographics can never be the same as what it is in North America. Exodus is another major problem. Most of my cousins(5 out of 7) have left Korea already. Two went to Australia, the rest in the US. This nation will experience a major exodus in its upper-middle class. You can call me an extremist, right winged, whatever tf you want but I'm not going to sugarcoat the reality of Koreans and the brutal future of Korea here just because we are a great nation which has BTS.
