I am from the Middle East. And to be honest this kind of talk from reporters saying that these horrifying events shouldn't happen in Europe, hinting it should stay in our regions where it 'belongs' makes me sick. It just makes our people feel like they are worth less than a european/western person. It's sad how we have come to a day and age where wars in the Middle East and African countries are not given as much attention as this conflict is. Then again, I am not saying that this conflict does not deserve press, quite the contrary it does! And what humanity is doing for Ukraine is absolutely amazing and I love it, but it aches my heart that we do not receive that much care from these countries eventhough we have gone through a lot more life threatening conflicts in our region :( The reality of our world is sad, the way these news anchors chose to value a human life more than another just because of their birth place and race... :(

First of all: every war and every violently taken life is terrible.
But as a European young person: I do relate more to a conflict close to me, than to one on another continent. Everyone does, cause we are able to understand it, we share similar culture and history, we are neighbours.
Just because it is more relatable.
Also, we Europeans share thousands of years of conflict. After the trauma of two world wars, it was our goal to unite and develope only through diplomacy.
Many Conflicts abroad are due to religious or cultural beliefs, which we do not share or even fail to comprehend.
It doesn't mean we do not care about other nations and their people. But we still have a handfull to do in growing together and achieving forever peace and avoiding conflict here.
This conflict is incredible because it targets a whole continents hard work for peace. It reminds us on WWII and the trauma that sticks to us till these days.
It repeats a dark part of history that we believed, would never be seen again.
It takes us back to the cold war. It threats the entire world through possible nuclear escalation.
It is the declaration of a worldpower, a autocracy, against the believe of democracy.
      Love from Germany.

nobody needs to write a full epic saga to prove they are not racist. Many europeans don't care about africans/muslims because they don't feel they are the same. It's easy to discriminate when you don't feel any bonds to a people/situation. There is nothing to romanticize about it. They just feel superior, even their conflicts are superior (oooh because we don't share the same beliefs that's why we cannot comprehend middle eastern/african conflicts :))) what a lame excuse! unfortunately there are cracks in the masks of humanity

I am an African student currently studying in Poland. I’m glad Trevor touched on the racism issue. It is actually surprising how some people over all this have the time to be racist. Foreign students are not being allowed on trains from Ukraine to other countries for safety. There are plenty of videos on this but… surprise surprise, the media is not even covering this. We are always seen as less than. I sympathise deeply with the people of Ukraine. I also sympathise with all other countries all over the world that the world is not really concerned about because they have a darker shade to their skin and it is expected of them like what Trevor said.
Just this Sunday, my Uber driver while we were casually speaking on how unfortunate the situation is, told me to my face that Putin should just, and I quote “ Pack up his tanks and GO TO AFRICA,” I do not even think he himself got what he was saying, because this ideology is so ingrained in most people it is actually shocking. He later back tracked when he realised who he was talking to. This shows you that this is a sentiment that a lot of people share. The value of a white man to that of everyone else will always be very different. I do not say this for divide, but just as a note about human nature. Some people’s lives are viewed as above others for some reason. I have come to terms with it. I pray for all those still stuck in this unfortunate situation.

We know! It's just sad to see how the global media forgets where civilization started and just because we have unique cultures doesn't mean we're uneducated savages who deserve war. We bleed for them to thrive. Look at Palestine and Afghanistan and Syria and tell me those people deserve it and there's nothing to be done about the situation! The whole world teamed up against Russia and I think they can do the same to stop war crimes committed elsewhere.

    • @bobherkey260
      @bobherkey260 Před 2 lety +71

@@zissou2265 I completely agree with you. I watched a documentary on the Afghanistan war and it was really sad how the United States destroyed Afghanistan in the name of dominance against Russia and how it literally used religious rhetoric to get extremists to fight against Russia. Afghanistan used to have beautiful cities and only in the countryside- like in all countries more so-called extremists existed. I don't really know as much as I should about Afghanistan, but that's what I kind of remember. I also get really frustrated by the hypocrisy in the United States and all around the world with the status-quo social constructs and public narratives. I completely agree that all people in the world deserve the same type of help as Ukraine is getting. As a white Polish-American, though, I get frustrated when seemingly ignorant commenters- definitely not you, write comments focusing on racism in the Ukraine response. It's definitely there, but it's a lot more complicated than that. Out of ignorance a lot of comments are really cold about it. It hurts me partly because I live in a place where there are very little Polish people around so I don't get to feel as understood and sympathize as other people in other cultures do. And it's also not like racism does not occur to eastern and central European people. I once had a boy older than me literally laugh at my face and talk to me about my ancestors and laugh that my ancestors were in concentration camps. People in Britain stereotype Ukrainians as bathroom cleaners. My mother has a medical degree, she worked as a doctor in Poland, and works as a nurse assistant because she has never taken her licensing exams in the US. She has the qualifications and knowledge for a different position so I think maybe her accent and background plays a role in in why the hospital hasn't offered her one.
I completely agree that most people in the US are completely ignorant about history and cultures outside the US. Like you said they don't realize that Europe was not actually as powerful and important as it is now throughout history. Only in very modern history it has become this powerful. Throughout history the middle east, China, and other areas, have been the major powers of the world. Civilizations in Mexico had extremally complicated cultures, and cultures of native Americans in US were actually more "civilized" in many ways than their colonizers. As you can tell I need to catch up in World History class, but I realize these truths exist. I think the only way to fix these problems and shortcomings is education and love.

Genocide in Vietnam by Western: A 30-year-long war raged in Vietnam between 1945 and 1975. It was the longest and one of the most brutal military conflicts of the 20th century. In the period from 1966 to 1968 alone, the USA and its allies dropped almost 2,900,000 tonnes of explosives on Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia - this was 800,000 more than total tonnage dropped during the Second World War. The suffering of the civilian population defies imagination. Over half of the rural population was driven out of its villages in the 1960s and forced to live in urban slums or refugee camps. The most conservative estimates work on the assumption that almost 630,000 civilians were killed in North and South Vietnam between 1965 and the end of 1974. As opposed to this, many historians refer to over two million deaths and over four million wounded - in a country with a population at the time of about 35 million inhabitants.
In any case, the proportion of civilians among the war victims was far in excess of 40 percent and therefore exceeded the corresponding quota for the Second World War.

You've fallen for the russian propaganda. White non-ukrainians are kicked off trains and buses too. Its because they're not ukrainian, not because they're not white. No doubt there have been incidents of racism but that its some huge thing that happens all over the place is russian propaganda trying to cause division. For every video showing black people being kicked off or stopped at the border there's a hundred videos showing black people safely crossing the border along with all the others. Literally just 10 minutes ago I saw a video on tiktok of a group of somali students talking about how they have safely crossed the border, meanwhile Ukrainians at another place on the border are stopped from crossing.
Ukrainians have priority, everyone else is at the end of the queue. Of those, women and children go first, men aren't allowed to leave.
All refugees also need to be registered and when hundreds of thousands are all trying to leave at once then yeah, some people get priority over others since the border system cant handle it all at once.

Russia tried to humiliate us for speaking our language. You can't even imagine what Russia was doing to us morally even before this war. Don`t forget that this war is only days old. I remember times when all the news was about Syrian and if this war goes on for months and months as I fear, it will sadly also get pushed out of the headlines. Also, people are selfish - Putin threathened to use nuclear weapons against the West so he became the common enemy for all of Europe and the US too. There is also a certain amount of guilt for not helping Ucraine by sending troops - because of that very threat. Last but not least, in my country which is only 7 hours from Ucraine there are enough Ucranian workers and students for everyone to know someone from Ucraine. And if the neighbours are fearing for the life of their father or son and the women and children of this family are arriving in a state of shock at the tiny apartment next door, it does feel closer than Myanmar of course. I`m not saying that it should but it does.

You know the response to this Ukrainian war shows how easy it is to humanize victims in a war thousands of miles away. Unless Putin is actually crazy, this war isn’t gonna last. The global response has been very devastating to Russia and this is all without direct aggression towards Russia.
At this point, the only reason anyone goes to war is to secure economic resources, if that wasn’t clear before, it should be crystal clear now. No one in the western mainstream media ever spoke about the bravery of the Iraqi or Afghan or Syrian or any Arab people when they were fighting their invaders, those stories existed but were never spoken about in the west because the US were the invaders. it’s a shame really cause I don’t want Ukrainians treated like Iraqis or Africans, I want Africans and Arabs to be treated like Ukrainians.
