Hi everyone and welcome to another piano review at the Merriam Pianos CZcams channel. We’ve got a much anticipated review for you here as we take a deep dive into Roland’s brand new FP-30X portable digital piano.
The FP-30X is the new update to the massively successful FP30, which was a total market titan during it’s 4 year run. Roland has managed to cram several significant upgrades into the FP30X, so we’re thrilled to put it under the microscope here.
If this is your first time to the channel, please like, subscribe, and hit the notification bell!
    Piano Overview
The FP-30X is an interesting addition to the market for a few reasons. It’s simultaneously targeted at the home user/hobbyist crowd, while also aimed at professional users as a totally viable option for gigging. You can think of it as a true “Prosumer” product, loaded with enough musical features to satisfy professionals, but not so expensive that it will turn off hobbyists.
    Piano Sound
The FP-30X runs on a brand new sound chip from Roland - the BMC chip. It features Roland’s SuperNATURAL piano engine, and the new BMC chip spruces the sound engine up over the version found in the FP-30. We weren’t expecting to hear a significant difference, but after hearing the FP-30X for the first time, there’s no question this new BMC chip is a definite step up!
Most notably, the dynamic range has been noticeably expanded, which will be especially helpful for those playing classical music. They’ve also doubled up the polyphony, now boasting 256 notes! This means you won’t really ever be taxing the processor.
The next big upgrade involves the speaker system. The average wattage of speakers on instruments in this class is 6-8 watts. The FP30X is loaded up with two 11 watt speakers, resulting in way more power and body than other instruments in this price range. This is also especially notable given the lightweight of the FP30X. You can also EQ the speakers depending on what surface the piano is placed on, super cool!
There are 56 total onboard sounds, including 12 distinct acoustic piano tones, 20 E piano tones, and 24 additional sounds including strings, organs etc.
    Piano Action
The FP30X features Roland’s PHA4 action. This action has been around for a few years now and has been a staple throughout the lower half of Roland’s lineup, while still being a professional-caliber action.
The PHA4 features escapement and a triple sensor, and on paper, is probably the most advanced action in this price point. People will definitely have their own subjective preferences, but objectively, this action out-specs anything else in the price point.
While Roland hasn’t disclosed any changes, the PHA4 in the FP-30X feels like it’s had some engineering upgrades, and the surface of the black keys feels different as well. This leads us to believe this is probably a second-generation PHA4.
    Piano Features
The FP-30X has a lot of impressive features, but perhaps most impressively is the presence of Bluetooth Audio. Bluetooth MIDI is present as well which is becoming commonplace for the price point, but Bluetooth Audio is still relatively rare at this price point. Bluetooth Audio allows you to turn your instrument into a giant Bluetooth speaker for listening or playing along with music.
There are also USB connectors for playing back MP3, WAV, and standard MIDI files. You can also record on-board, or via the new ¼” line out, which makes this a true professional gigging instrument.
It comes with a more basic sustain pedal, but we’d recommend upgrading to the DP-10 which offers half-pedaling.
In terms of finishes, it comes in both black and white, and optional accessories include a matching stand as well as a triple pedal board.
    Conclusions
The FP30X is a heck of an instrument, especially for the price point. Upgrades over the successful FP30 are notable and significant, and it beautifully straddles the line between being a hobbyist instrument and a professional-caliber instrument.
    Thanks so much for watching!

Thanks to this review and others like it, I just purchased this as a beginner keyboard for my daughter and son who are both just starting to learn piano. I wanted something closer to the feel of an acoustic piano and something they can grow with as their skill and knowledge improves. My son is extremely competent at computers (as well as myself) so the Bluetooth and USB capabilities are exciting. I'm an okay guitar player as well and I have always had an interest in learning piano. I look forward to using this for a good while. It seems to have gotten rave reviews over and over for its price point and quality. Thanks for the quality review. I have also enjoyed the comparison videos you have made.

Great review and playing! Love to hear all of the song variations and your excellent playing, and not the same riff over and over. This unit looks nice, and sounds great, even on my TV. It appears to be a good time to be in the keyboard market with so many excellent products coming out at reasonable prices. I would like to know more about the onboard speakers, since they don't seem to be really visible on the case and are more powerful than most. Looking at it, I thought it was meant only for stage. Looking forward to the app review, since I've seen some pretty bad reviews on that.

I don't own an FP30X but did check it out in a piano store and I'm quite certain there are several levels of sensitivity for the action on the keys, the light setting is very easy to depress, and the higher levels make it more like a new acoustic piano, i.e., a little more difficult to depress the keys. Great review, great playing

@J S I'm a beginner. yeah that pianoforever guy is opinionated and has a preference for es110, and will never change. I felt the action was too springy on p125 less acoustic like, but they would be great for young kids, the sound was brighter. I have not tried es110. I want something heavier to train my fingers. When I'm awesome, I can always upgrade the action, I can't play fast enough to notice the speed at which the keys return. The speakers are ok, and might get a monitor speaker. It's hard to ignore the huge amount of other features too. Also where I am there is very little difference in price between p125.

I am looking forward to replacing my Yamaha P35B with Roland- Yamaha didn't upgrade their Microsoft app for the new MIDI. I salvaged the situation with the excellent Roland WM 1D. I am surprised that the Bluetooth does not go direct to Headphones however that is not a problem as I simply plug my Sennheiser Bluetooth transmit into the headphone socket and use the Bluetooth on the headphones for both my Piano and my stereo system so the Roland will undoubtedly work the same way. The middle finger of my right hand jams between black keys on a Yamaha P-125 depressing three keys, but not on the Roland BF30X. Looking to get back into piano after many, many years since I was taking lessons (primary school), even though I would be coming into this as essentially a beginner, I feel the compatibility with the triple pedal set is well worth the extra over the fp-10, even if I'm only learning, seems to be worth the extra 30% or so cost (fp-10 is $750 dollarydoos vs the fp-30x @ a grand) Not sure how much I would use them, but, well, acoustic pianos have three pedals for a reason right? Coming from guitar (cole clarke acoustic, strat), so fine with seeing instruments as an investment rather than a toy, the sound chip is just a bonus at this point...
I guess what I'm saying is anyone reading this, tell me the fp-30x is worth it, trying to justify the extra $250 lol, heavily leaning to this one anyways, just wondering what the established pianists think. Never a performer, just a private enthusiast, looking at an e piano first, because as an also ex drummer, e drums are expensive if you want the "features" of an acoustic kit (triple zone cymbals etc, I know the kit I want, another Roland product, but well, keys gets me playing something besides guitar sooner!) Expensive hobby haha, still got nothing on simracing tho!

Your videos are great. I bought the FP-30X based on this. I am a beginner at 50 and I wanted something that had a great piano sound and action that felt something like an acoustic piano. So far the FP-30X is great. (UPDATE: SO ACTUALLY... I bought the 30X and It's very good, but I found having to use the app for almost everything was a pain and the downward firing speakers sound muffled to me. I was going to return it and get the 60X, but it is back ordered for more than a month. So I went crazy and bought the 90X. Not only does it sound better, but the PHA-50 action feels incredible and way more responsive than the PHA-4. I'm poor, but I'm satisfied.)

The Kawai 110 / 120 also has downward firing speakers. I own the 110 and hate the piano key + function combo with no screen, as well as the downward firing speakers. I used it on a tabletop and the sound through the speakers sucked, even though there is a "tabletop" sound setting, as here. Plus, I now have downstairs neighbors. I've been looking at the Kawai 4520 (upward speakers but deeper, 14" to the 30X's 11", you can see why, they fire the speakers down and it saves real estate). Since the reviews are rarely about speaker direction, your comment saved me from going to try out the 30 at a store. It's a rule out for me, as well as having to use the app. I like controls. The Kawai 520 is $1300, but I'd rather pay that than be frustrated. So, if you see this comment, thanks!

I just got a white one yesterday. It has an audio interface - I use it with VST. Unfortunately there are a few cons: I can't find a good ASIO driver - the one which gets installed automatically in Windows is by no means low-latency - I have to use ASIO4ALL with it. I'll probably switch back to my usb audio interface, but it works well if you need to take it out - you grab your computer, the keys and one usb cable. 😄
Another thing which annoys me is it doesn't remember all the settings, only select ones. Such things like MIDI channel, local control is forgotten when you switch it off. Good the keyboard velocity is remembered. The speakers are really good, I can confirm - as far as built-in speakers go, of course. And the keyboard does seem tighter - exactly as Stu said 😁 In general I'm happy - I have to build a custom desk for it now - previously I had a full size digital piano, so I didn't need it.

20:08 me too. The app compensates for the lack of a display, which sets this board into the lower shelf, making the FP-60X appear to be on another level, which is arguable.
The little difference of price currently between the FP-30X and the RD-88 is what is making me undecided . I think the RD-88 can be a longer term board , if I can afford it.

Beautiful playing by Stu. I love the richness of the FP30X features, but to me the bass end is exaggerated, and the middle doesn't cut through. I'd say the heavy processing leaves the sound too wet and boomy.
Of course a great thing is how much you can edit the sound, but I don't want to have to reprogramme a piano a lot just to get what seems like a natural sound to me. This is why I rejected the FP50. Could be psychoacoustics giving me an unfair bias here, but I prefer the P-125/P-121 and PX-S3000 sounds. Even the ES110 sounds nicer to me on the main piano tone.
This instrument might be great on stage, which is where Roland pianos/keyboards do tend to shine, but as a practice instrument? No, not for me.
Despite all this, I have suppressed my preferences and suggested this instrument to a friend who admires Roland products and would have bought the old FP30 if only it had decent outputs.

Great review STU, you're the master .. can't wait for the 30 vs 30x comparison .. I have a question though .. adopting the piano designer app with what it has of powerful potential parametric piano tone shaping on the sound and tone of the piano sounds makes me wonder about Roland's philosophy towards the real concept of their supernatural piano engine sound.. in other words to make it clearer, I have always thought that piano designer is only capable of dealing with "modeled" piano sound engines like in Roland's latest "pure acoustic" .. the question is, if the supernatural sound engine is based on sampling with few limited real time processing of their BMC chip, how could even the piano designer app make these tremendous amount of piano parametric variable changes to a "sampled base engine sound"?!
I have a doubt that FP-30X first piano sound is the only one that is modeled and is the only one piano deaigner app can play with .. other piano sounds are indeed sampled based on the supernatural engine and hence couldn't be dealt with by piano designer app.. I hope to hear from you STU addressing this wondering and to give us your own analytical opinion about it in the next 30 vs 30x comparison video..

I can not hear any "brightness" or "fullness"! Even after connecting it to my good 2.1 speaker-system, the sound ist just meh. But if I listen to the sound Stu's creating in his video it sounds amazing. Why is that, any idea how to achieve a "bright and full" sound?
