  • Gay Millenial watches Mannequin (1987) for the first time. Is this movie as insane as it sounds? Is this the first thing I've seen Kim Cattrall in? I think yes.

I loved this movie as a kid. Growing up in the 90s I would watch it on repeat 😂 it's so silly and fun!

It's a retelling of the myth of Pygmalion. The conceit is that Emmy was cursed to come to life only when a great artist poured their soul into a work, which has apparently happened repeatedly (hence meeting the assorted historical figures).

Love this movie. Coming of age as a closeted gay teen in the 1980s, I just adored Hollywood. And I love the movie’s message that they make him a hero. Sure, they make him stereotypical, but he’s incredible fun. Love him.

  • @JoeandOlly
    @JoeandOlly Před 6 měsíci +2

even though Hollywood was a stereotypical gay man, he is the most like the gay people I’ve ever met or known in my life or on CZcams. Like you said, they use a couple slurs against him, but the main character stuck up for him (“could’ve put me on with a bigoted jerk”) and wasn’t bothered by him being gay so that was pretty progressive for an 80’s movie.

I actually saw this in the theatre in the spring of 87 when it was released. I was 14. Definitely takes me back to a simpler time. This movie definitely had a quirky charm to it:) Andrew and Kim have great chemistry:) Love your channel and the direction your taking:) I’m totally on board:)

Yeah, it seemed like they were all having a good time making the movie. I thought the cast was really fun and committed to their characters.

This was a highly popular movie when it came out. Unlike now it was about a love story and wasn't meant to be historically accurate. The ratings site reflect the younger critics who, love to point out the inaccuracies historically and cheesy nature of the movie, because now very little in entertainment is truly funny anymore because of PC culture. Who are they to say what is correct. Someone writes a story from their own perspective and if it is fictional who are you to come in and criticize historical inaccuracies when it was a fictional story to begin with. People are so over analytical these days even when it's fictional it has to be racially accurate or people's heads explode. I loved this movie and we all knew the Egypt scenes weren't completely accurate, but neither was a mannequin coming to life in the real world, so we adjusted and enjoyed. I love your reaction.

This is my fav movie, the organ is still in the store and they use it weekly. Also the actual mannequin is in a store in philly.

Regarding white Egyptians, after Alexander the Great died, one of his Greek generals, Ptolemy became the ruler of Egypt which the Macedonian army had conquered years before. Ptolemy's male descendants became the Pharaohs of Egypt most of whom were named after him and his female descendants were named after Alexander's sister Cleopatra, whom Ptolemy had once courted for marriage but never married. One of Ptolemy's descendant, Cleopatra the 7th if I'm not mistaken, became ruler of Egypt during the rule of Julius Caesar in Roman times and had that infamous affair with Mark Anthony. So the idea of Caucasian Egyptians isn't so far fetched as it may seem.

This was a really fun reaction. I was hesitant to watch because I LOVED this movie as a kid and wasn't sure if I wanted to see it bashed. I had fun watching you really enjoy it but I never realized how dumb some parts really were. I need to watch it again as an adult because there is some real nonsense in there that I don't remember 🙃

They filmed this in the John Wanamaker Department Store, in Phillie. Not only did the store really have a pipe organ, it was THE largest functional pipe organ in the world.
Hollywood Montrose is EXTRA extra, but easy to like, a good wingman... and has quite the automobile in his possession.
A clean recording of the opening theme song had gone missing for decades (which is baffling, considering we're talking about a Belinda Carlisle in the 80s!), but someone came across a copy a while back and it can be found on CZcams.
Apparently, over the years, Emmy has been manifesting herself in the creations of very passionate artists and becoming their muse for a while. Presumably she eventually vanishes back into the ether for a while between significant others, then manifests to another artist, unable to become fully alive and stay with someone, until she finds a true match.
I loved this as a kid and I still dig it, animated opening, musical montages, and all.

It was nice seeing an objective review of this, and I could honestly see where you were coming from with your opinions. I'm not objective; this came out when I was 12 and I'll love Kim Cattrall until I die. Seeing it through your eyes was fun. I'm so glad you understood how the LGBTQ community was victim to some standard jokes back then and didn't let that ruin your enjoyment of the movie. It is pretty dumb, but I still love it.

It's just a sign of 'your' times that you and other people younger than 50 or 60 tend to look too deeply for details and explanation.

Back in the day, movies were just movies, people knew it was a love story and that's all that mattered. Nothing had to be explained because at the end of the day, it's just a movie and great one at that. Young folks won't get it
