Tangerine Dream, "Bath Tube Session," Berlin, 1969

  • T Dream rocking the house in Berlin, 1969. Edgar Froese, guitar. Klaus Schulze, drums. "Happy" Dieter, bass. No one seems to know who "Happy" Dieter was.
It was filmed at the St. George Fountain in the courtyard of a restaurant on Potsdamer Str. The fountain now sits in Hindemithplatz, as the restaurant was torn down years ago, and the area is now a generic looking shopping district.
Sometimes also called the "Bathtub Session."

Shades of Interstellar Overdrive , etc., early Floyd jams. I think it's a compliment to say so. PF invented some forms of "Space Rock", TD just developed and explored further, two of my favorite bands......Edit: CONFIRMED, early TD jams WERE conscious "variations" on the theme of Interstellar Overdrive, etc. I read it on the Wikipedia page.

It just works fine with one or two mics placed in the room. This is some tiny art happening and not Woodstock, nobody mic'd drums on an event like this in 1969. They just started recording live shows in a propper way back then. Even in the 90s, drums were sometimes unmic'd on smaller shows I visited.

For this type of music, it's almost better if you don't really know how to play. Different ideas come out that a well-trained musician would never think of. I'm a prime example of that. I've trained and practiced for so many years that I'm totally stuck in a rut as a conventional guitar player - lol. Oh well. At least there are plenty of free thinking musicians out there that I can listen to that are far from conventional. :)

This is horrible. Almost embarrassingly so. That’s because all three of these musicians went on to make some of the most important (and enjoyable) music in my collection. This video reveals them as amateurs, playing music when they were hardly ready to play publicly. It is only because the audience was so naive that they were able to get away with it. I can relate, well, almost - I am also a musician (though not anywhere as well know as they became), and I’m proud of many of the works I’ve released. But if someone found a video of the band I was in the summer before I entered high school I’d crawl under a rock and would have to be coaxed out with the promise that the video and all its copies would be destroyed.
