The transitions between hubris, uncontrollable sadness, and the masochist need to feel pain after being humiliated-well done, Kieran!
His reaction to the person who was checking to see if he was OK says it all. He's completely broken both morally and emotionally. Too traumatised by neglection to be able to accept kindness and too far gone as a person to even recognise it.
I read it more like he doesn't want someone so beneath him (socially) touching him.
You know how Roman makes fun of poor people and all marginalized groups, some random from the streets making contact even if to help him is disgusting to Roman, he doesn't see them as real people, they don't matter to him.
I bet if it had been someone like Gerri trying to help him he'd been fine with it, it's what he's been seeking from her this season, her comfort but she refused to and her rejections made him angry because he's that spoiled, he felt she owed him that so even Gerri that Roman sees as a "real person that matters" is just a tool for him to make himself feel better. She did well not talking to him even if she did feel sorry for him at the funeral, he did look at her before going out but he knows she doesn't want to talk to him.
@@ororomunroe4055He didnt want help dude went there wanting to get beat up
Yeah, it was really the scene prior to this that did Roman in. Kendall insulting him and demeaning Roman just like how Logan did finally broke him and led to this.
he was humiliated early in the episode when he cried while trying to deliver his "awesome" speech that he prepared for. People recorded his crying and humiliation and were playing it at the wake. Feeling humiliated, Roman went and looked for the 'prize' that his father gave him for humiliation, a beating. He sought punishment for not being what his father wanted, he clearly was abused and he went to go seek his pain.
Am I the only one sick of the “tortured rich kid” trope? Like we get it, your family had a lot of money, and you feel guilty about it.
Roman got visibly excited when someone shoved into him, and then latched onto the larger dude who didn't ignore him like others did. he finally got rewarded by an elbow from said dude, yet no satisfaction of a proper beat up came. he curled on the ground making zero effort to get back up expecting to be trampled on, instead he got extended a helping hand, at which point he finally gave up because the illusion of harm was broken by the stranger's attempt at comfort. such an incredibly devastating scene made possible by the perfect choreograph, performance, and camera work.
Also, I find it funny that the episode opened to Roman basking on the protests from atop his skyline mansion and closed to him being on the ground, being punched & trampled by the same protesters.
How the mighty have fallen
Not just that, he gets punched and almost trampled in an act of self-destruction, reacting w/ violence to the guy who tries to help them up.
Almost like he’s basking in his self-loathing.
Good guy Roman Roy.
The only 1% elite who went to see the protesters firsthand. Really in touch with his people.
Lmao!
and they beat the shit out of him

The protesters are cowards we need Mencken to dress up as Batman to take care of them
He recognizes physical and emotional abuse as love after his childhood & with all of the emotions from the funeral he goes and does this. Great writing
THERE I AM!!! 0:56! CENTER OF THE FRAME!
having to shut my mouth about this was sO DIFFICULT. being on a desolate 5th avenue at 3:00 in the morning, huddled with 400 other extras... it was the best night. so many friends were made, the production crew was amazing. all around, a 10/10 experience.
p.s.
mark mylod is a very nice gentleman, and a fantastic director.
it must be an unforgettable memory for you
Congrats dude
Cheers dude.
Out of interest what was Culkin like? I heard he is a bit of a dick in real life.
this scene really makes you understand that even if they have money and power, in the real world they're as small and weak as everyone else
Like Mike Tyson said, “Everyone has a plan until they got punched in the face.”
Hence the need for money and power…
@@estevesmartins7935hank you mate, this is one of the first smart comments I’ve seen on CZcams. Thank you, bless you (Moriarti or however it was you spelt it from Sherlock reference intended). Bless you mate, i’ve been sitting through all these brain dead comments, you have no idea how refreshing it is to finally see something reasonable here. Lol, bless you.
Edit: I sound insane, but I don’t care. The idiocy of the internet would drive me insane anyway.
There's a famous story of Gustavus Adolphus, greatest king of Sweden and possibly the first modern head of state. Dude was absolutely slaying during the 30 years war, and would ride into battle wearing blazing armor, leading his men himself. He led the charge into a smoke filled battle... and after the dust settled, he was found at the bottom of a pike of corpses, naked.
Why? Because they can get punched in the face? What a stupid thing to say that just looks smart for average Joes lol
Poor Roman, always looking for someone to beat him up. Physcially or emotionally.
It’s insane that he is seeing the manifestations of his decision in the election episode…also crazy that now him making that decision didn’t even truly lead to support from Mencken. Crazy episode, super excited to see how it all plays out
Same
ı couldnt understand why mencken changed hıs mınd so easily tho lıke a mınute after he was lıke ok ı can support your us. ceo plan why not
@@colombusoho2741Roman broke down and cried. Ironically that probably cost him the job.
@@colombusoho2741 i think it’s because ATN is already tied up with him already and the Roy brothers can’t change the narrative against him all of a sudden and Gojo can make him have more support from young people
@Trevor Distance yes but also kendall portrayed a strong leadership and wouldnt that worth a consideretion after all they're the ones get you on that potus position.
ı think its lazy writing at that point ı mean the show and last season is brilliant and they needed that focus shift to shiv in order to create one final tension but ıts not how a serious person would act on such important point, so arbitrary by him
Amazing how Roman’s emotional state mirrored the anger that the protesters felt after the election. This shows Roman’s downward trajectory, that all the other siblings have faced in times of crises
its pathetic; always grieve in private and break necks in the public
The scene prior to this one was so heartbreaking as we saw Kendall cross a line an emotionally abuse Roman in a way that only Logan had done before. His big bro that had looked out for him and protected Roman from his evil father became that same same vile man. Which only added to the pent up emotions that have been building up inside of Roman this season. No wonder he immediately ran out and did this as if he was looking to be hurt or worse.
For sure. Ken could have been much more supportive “you fucked it” is such a poorly way to word that statement. He could have said “the sharks are circling because you had a breakdown. Its not your fault, i just wanted you to be aware”
Roman's touch grass moment
I like how he started the episode in his big nyc penthouse bragging about picking the next president
Only to finish on the ground, completely broken
something something about Roman provoking physical assault on him when he was humiliated bcs he's still looking for Logan's presence in his life even though Logan's dead
I was so scared he was going to be trampled to death. Roman is just unraveling more and more.
I was kinda hoping for that, given how despicable his character is. 🌚
@Vaibhav Sharma Clearly, you don't get his character, if you think he's just a "despicable person." He's incredibly emotionally and mentally stunted, he doesn't know how to deal with failure in the wake of the world crashing down around him. He has no one to support him, or show him kindness. Not even his own brother could put the buisness end of things aside to let him grieve on the night of his Dad's funeral. He had to remind him and kick him while the "dog's down," that he fucked up the one thing he thought he was good for at the company. He is spiraling completely, desperately wanting to be hurt physically so that he can experience the emotional pain he's feeling.
@@ianp5367 Roman's emotional state doesn't necessarily exonerate his actions, though? His support of Mencken (the fucking FASCIST?!) is going to affect millions of people's livelihoods. We don't pardon criminals just because their dad hit them
@i eat sand You're missing the point, of course, it wasn't okay. The point is that the reason for his actions doesn't make him solely "despicable." These characters are nuanced, just like people, and Roman is no different.
@@ianp5367Obviously I know he's nuanced, we watched the same fucking show. It doesn't excuse his actions- that's the entire point of the episode you are pretending to have paid attention to. The whole point is that as unfortunate as the Roys' upbringing is, they're still terrible people whose terrible actions have unforgivable ramifications for the world around them- see Jess and Rava's reactions. You have some fucking nerve telling the normal people they missed the point when you missed third grade english class to dickride fictional fascists.
Roman being punished for simply grieving his dead father was the final straw for him.
We saw the real Roman this episode and it was sad to watch. I hope Kieran wins an Emmy because he's been incredible this season!!
it's gonna be tough if it's Kieran vs Jeremy 😭😭
Culkin was absolutely phenomenal here, but Odenkirk is taking home that Emmy
@@hbmatt5982 ya i see
Jesus fucking Christ. This episode was a lot to take in. It can’t be ending already. It just can’t, I need more.
I think the most poignant thing about this scene is how long it takes anyone to even give a shit about Roman. It really makes him seem even more pathetic and powerless. Even though the protest is ostensibly about him, he's still just a little man playing a big game he only has the illusion of control over. Hell, even when he does manage to provoke someone to hit him it's almost as an aside. For all his delusions of being the next Logan Roy, without his money and privilege he's a nobody.
Hilarious how is technically his fault that the country is in shambles
I mean is it ? It’s not the Mencken guys who are protesting this is quite normal happens every election people tend to sensationalize it
Right, if only the radical antifa got what they wanted they wouldn't destroy the country.
The question is which side is responsible for the shambles? Now we know Mencken is some sort of fascist (Despite not much being shown other than him being a Republican) but in the show, it's been the democratic supporters causing pretty much all the carnage and damage.
Want to make clear I am in no way a Republican. Can just acknowledge both sides are equally at fault when they tend to be
@@razzprince2877 well, beside him explicitly saying he likes to take ideas from H playbook but maybe that is just being a republican lmao
@@razzprince2877 how are both sides at fault?
i genuinely thought he was going to die by a lost bullet or trampled. i was so scared this whole scene
I always remembered a scene in the trailer from the season in which Roman is in the demonstrations and when I saw that in this episode the demonstrations were presented, I was worried about Roman from start to finish, I even felt that the initial scene of Roman practicing the speech and that music was a way to say goodbye to the character
It's sad how the only way Roman can cope with his emotions is throught insults and violence. He feels so BIG and yet so small among the crowd. A place where he has no power, no authority over anyone, he's just a broken man.
This might be one of the greatest scenes in the show. Very meaningful
I got spoiled that “Roman got bruised” when reading a description for episode 10 a day before this episode came out. So the suspense of this scene was unbearable, I thought he was going to get beaten near death by people who knew who he was.
IMDB
I think the emotional pain with company is much worse than anything these protestors can do physically.
Yeah it was just a punch, you see in the finale promo he has a little bandaid and redness but it's basically nothing lol, HBO really exaggerated with the finale synopsis, you can be sure Logan beat him way worse than that. I thought they'd kick the shit out of him when he was on the floor but nope, they just walked past him and a dude even tried to help him.
@@ororomunroe4055 I expected him to be trampled to death or some shit like damn
Daaamn Roman was so close to playing the greatest move of all time, even I was blindsided by the fact that the president could simply change his mind once he got what he wanted 😂😂😂
the soundtrack, the emotions, the madness and the overall acting from Kieran Culkin just makes this scene perfect. this is probably my second favourite moment in the whole show
absolutely loved this episode and this scene in particular really captures the essence of it. Roman roy, a powerful dude or at least he thought he was, disappears into the sea of "nobodies" like everyone else..
His abuser now is dead but he still fill the need to be hurt and humiliated just to feel something
I m Kendall fanboy but holy shit i feel terrible for Roman. I mean it's all consequences of his own actions but still. Kendall just crushing him with you fucked up was so brutal for him. Kendall legit made him feel like a nobody and when Roman went out in the streets he realised that he was in fact, a nobody. This scene was so powerful man. I really really really hope Roman an Gerry patch up or something oh god. I also hate the people bashing Roman for crying tbh. Amazing acting by Kieran man
As Kendall put it, Logan was comfortable in this world. Roman immediately gets trampled in it.
It's almost as if HE'S ASKING TO BE PUNISHED FOR HIS WEAKNESS AND FAILURE. THAT'S WHAT HIS FATHER TAUGHT HIM ! SAD.
Another hard watch, thanks Succession!
It happened on the wrong day but Roman got about 1/10 of what he deserved here
1/100th
I was scared watching him go into the crowd,.I thought someone will beat him to death, cause its hbo , it's normal for them to kill a character when you least expect it
Can anyone in this entire show be happy at the end of it? Anyone at all?
Despite his suffering I think he brought this onto himself. He can do pretty much whatever he wants when hes in those skyscrapers-- and yet when he's in the thick of it down on the street, his insults have no value except for instigating a brawl. Even though I know these feeds his self-loathing from his childhood abuse, I think he realised that in the general public, he doesn't really matter.
Just give him the damn Emmy already
Roman's joker moment
rich joker lksdkls
Roman inadvertently becoming a participant in the mob of people who's lives have been part-way ruined by Logan Roy.
This is what will happen if Kieran doesn't win the Emmy
Roman is there like: look on my works ye mighty and despair.
This episode was so good at softening you up with a laugh before (literally) punching you in the face with an “oh shit” moment.
Damn that was quick lol
I honestly thought he might get killed here. He's lucky no one in the crowd knew who he was.
Not gonna lie I thought they'd beat him up way worse, like kick him when he was on the floor but there was a nice guy that tried to help him and he was awful as usual, because he doesn't want a "poor" touching him.
That punch is just a scratch, it will heal in two days, lol. Logan probably beat up Roman worse since he was a kid and that's what he's missing, he just needed to feel something.
This is why Logan never considered Roman. The finale is Shiv vs Ken. Roman is irrelevant.
Roman endorsed an extremist and basically put him into power and is now getting trampled by the situation he created which happened a lot throughout history. I wonder is this foreshadowing the fate of the Roy family and maybe the country as a whole
what a character devolopment he got! insane
It's kinda sus how Mattson looked at Roman's breakdown at the altar.
He's in need of an American CEO who he can keep on a leash while being a sweetner for the board. He's 100% not gonna choose Shiv (he's blatantly sexist, knows Shiv has no sense of loyalty and is too ambitious to keep on a leash). Ken's not gonna take the job even if offered. Leaving only Roman.
Yes, Roman and Mattson are not on good terms. But he's still the guy Logan brought with him to negotiate the deal. He's also the guy that successfully pitched Mattson the GoJo deal. Most importantly, he can be kept on a leash and taken advantage of.
I predict Rome's gonna be CEO at the end of all this. Or he fuckin' dies. Because there's nothing for him to fall back on.
He’s gonna pick Greg
@@zombibyte Let's be real here - Cousin Greg came to the funeral in a fuckin' bicycle. He's the dictionary definition of "not serious people."
@@princepscivitatis4083 Mattson isn’t looking for a serious person, he’s looking for a puppet. An American CEO for him who will bark when told to. He liked Greg, he knows Greg is cutthroat from his firings, and Greg is in the family. Ken is too dangerous and would never accept, Shiv is inexperienced and far too ambitious, and Roman is a wild card who crashes and burns historically. Honestly, it’s between Greg and Tom for the crown. My money’s on Greg.
@@Redfield982 You can't make someone like Greg the CEO of a giant conglomerate overnight. Mattson needs a puppet, yes and preferably one that's neutered. But that person also needs to be appealing to the board and the markets or the whole thing would crash and burn.
Roman was a board member and COO under Logan. Then he became CEO during the transition. Most importantly he's lost. Mattson can shape him however he likes.
@@princepscivitatis4083 But he won’t, because Roman is now a laughing stock. After this episode, Roman is done.
This was so disturbing to me for some reason, like I knew a scene like this was coming but it was worse than I had expected
Also can you post the ending theme of this scene 🙏🏽
Never knew there was such a thing as a rich entitled walking style until you see roman walking just now.
Thought he was going to get beat to death to end the episode.
I really thought he would get killed here
I imagine Roman will reconcile with Gerri in the finale in some sort of way.
I’m pretty certain that ship has sailed.
@@537monster business wise yeah, but maybe he apologizes
i hope he at least manages to give her a sincere apology
@@margaritasalt I think something might come up, when Roman has his breakdown the camera focuses on Gerri and she obviously feels sorry for him but also won't talk to him for obvious reasons, then Roman looks at Gerri before going outside and losing his shit but she doesn't see him because she's talking with Frank and Karl, she only sees him go outside and calls out Karl for laughing at that video.
It'd be nice if Roman gives her a proper apology before she leaves so things don't end so bitter between them, some proper closure because he's been horrible to her and despite everything she still cares in some capacity and not many people care about Roman, understandably, he's not easy to like.
@@ororomunroe4055 "and despite everything she still cares in some capacity and not many people care about Roman, understandably, he's not easy to like." very well said. it's so sad one of the few people he has left he's managed to alienate as well.

I predict some toned down version of a blood bath, a true Shakespearean conclusion. Ties severed, wills broken, and an ungodly amount of compromise for each and every one of these ‘players.’
