For clipless pedals, what amount of float do you prefer on your pedal cleat (0, 4.5 ,and 9 degrees)? I just got Look Keo Sprint pedals, and the 9 degrees is feeling loosy goosy? Any suggestions? Great video, as well.
You should mention that pulling the front pedal up is pretty key as it removes weight from the back wheel. Like, learning to skip first is good idea. Almost like doing a nose wheelie.
Get yourself together, man. Move to Philly. Buy a loft. Start a noise band. Get six or seven roommates. Eat hummus with them. Book some gigs. Paint. Smoke cloves. Listen to Animal Collective. Start some type of salsa company.
what bike should i get?whats the best cheapest fixed gear bike i should get?pure fix?i want light and double wall rims and something that can handle hills
i find it easier if you begin to skid with a brake and a fixed gear. it helps as attempting to skid for the first time is hard and requires strong strength
Great tutorial. I think it should also be mentioned that being a relatively light person and having strong legs helps. I started to skid on smooth cement when it was damp to master it.
I run 15:48 and it's pretty much impossible, at least with my sandpiper calves. been riding that ratio for 17 years in Boston traffic. Only the foolish don't run a rear brake. You can never know when a car will f' you up, and you won't have time/ distance for a skid. I know, I've have been hit with no time to react.
Rear brakes wont slow you down quick enough, you want front brakes only because your rear brakes will just slow you down not stop you, all your weight is in the back so no front brakes will not send you over the bars and if they do either lose some weight or adjust your brakes....
Front AND rear brake is the way to go, I think that's the message he's trying to get across. But yeah it defeats the purpose of riding fixed if you have two brakes, might as well add a freewheel at that point.
Evan Pipta you obviously dont ride a fixie, properly anyway, rear brakes are useless on a fixed gear, its like trying to use scooter brakes on a car...
the pure idea of putting any kind of brakes to a FIXED GEAR* bike Its absolutly pointless and stupid, want brakes? get a single speed or a road bike. That's it.
Finally got it happening a few weeks ago. I'm just using one strap atm on my right leg, which is my dominant leg, but instead of pushing down with it, I pull up with my dominant right leg and down with my left. I hear that if you only use one dominant leg that you will wear out your tires in the same spots.
alienrefugee51 It has to do with the gear ratio. There is some cart online that tells you how many skid patches you will have depending on your ratio. Do you think you could do this with no straps? like on a slick pavilion floor. I have no hills but i want to learn this. I hate straps. I like to jump a lot, they just restrict my feet too much. I've been trying to do a small bunny hop into it with mild success.
GODis MEME I've had no luck trying to skid without straps, though I haven't tried to on a real slick surface either. I would think that straps would help with jumping as your feet are locked to the pedals and you can help lift the bike up with your feet?
Idk if it is hard, but because i dont have a fixie, i learned skidding on my gear bike (not fixed gear). But i use the front wheel/handlebars to turn my skid. Much easier in my opinion.
+Luis Turcios If you live in Los Angeles, there are fixed gear trade and sell groups on facebook. There are a ton of guys trying to sell their Blue Competition Cycles TR250. But yeah, it is rare to fine it for sale anywhere else indeed.
I've been skidding on 50/16 for a while.. I don't understand how some people can't skid.. Do you guys have proper foot retention? Cages/straps will make it a little difficult. Clipless pedals will make you feel "One with the bike" trust me.
How to skid on clipless? Because on my first time skidding in clipless it suddenly unclipped and resulted in a crash Ive tighten it to full tension but still came off why is that?
ever time i try i end up stripping the the threads if my hub where is connects to the cog, i am a big guy but i have some big friends that can do it any suggestion on how i can stop my problem.
I like that you advise to use breaks. I find they look stupid on a mostly cleared bike ... but German police wants everyone to have two seperatly usable brakes, so we have no other chance to mount at least on front brake in addition.
Santa Dragon "at least" implies that it would be fine to run just with a front brake on a fixed gear in Germany. But it is not! In Germany, you have to mount a front and a rear brake. If you don't and they catch you, you get a fine plus penalization points in your driving license (as long as you have one)
Daniel Zanetti Actually they discuss the problem, because in fact you need two from each other usable brakes. And if you have a front brake and the brake by skidding you have to brakes wheels normally. There is not the last word spoken if this counts now as two or one brake (front + fixed gear).
Santa Dragon I really have have no idea what you are trying to say. But trust me, running a fixed bike with just a front brake, is not legal in Germany. And seen we are talking about an actual law that says that you have to have two brakes - and back-pedaling doesn't count as a brake - there is no "discussing the problem". If you are lucky, you just get a fine. Now, if you are lucky enough and live in a city where the cops don't look, good for you. But by the law, it isn't allowed.
Shoes and cleats will be easier once you learn how to use them. Pedals with straps (no cages) are easier to use if you want to wear normal shoes while riding. It really comes down to personal preference. If you go with clipless pedals (shoes + clippy pedal) use double sided ones like speedplay or Shimano SPD (or other mtb setup) because clipping into moving single sided pedals is very difficult.
Alex Soto I also have 48x15 and S100s on fixed gear bike but this ratio is very difficult to skid with if you dont have the leg power. I would recommend using 48x17 or 48x18 in order to learn how to skid properly, then you could try out 48x15. This what i did when i started off riding a year ago and now I ride 48x15 and i could on that ratio properly.
I learned to skid with a 48x15 but I have to admit it, it's kind of difficult if you have to skid a lot with this ratio, 48x17 seems to be a great ratio overall
Hey i just got my new fixed the other day and it was a single speed but also fixed. The ratio is 46:15 and when i try to skid the wheels won`t stop and i end up pedaling forward LOL
+FOOTNATION Naqib It has been a year since you commented. Better late than never. You do not need a specific tire to skid. Some tires may last longer, some may be harder to skid on, etc. Some really nice ones are, Gatorskins (do not get Gator Hardshells), Serfas Seca, and Specialized Armadillo.
+GODis MEME Yeah of course! You can skid without straps, but it would be a ton harder. It also depends on the ground, technique, strength, etc. If you have oily and wet asphalt, you can do a one leg skid anytime. Honestly though, skidding without foot retention is in my opinion, dangerous and not really efficient.
+GODis MEME If you have no straps, it's a lot easier to do ball-to-stem skid. Basically you stand on your bike and lean forward, supporting your body weight over handlebar (and thus over the front wheel) and do the same thing. Even with straps some people prefer this because it takes weight off the rear wheel so it's supposed to be less damaging to the tire. Also, a long skidding will almost always be performed in that position (there's even a competition for this).
sounds like the cog and lockring weren't tight enough in that setup. you ALWAYS NEED to have a lockring when you plan to skid (and in fixed gear riding in general to be safe), and your lockring should be tightened with an actual proper lockring tool, not by hand. Mavic Ellipses use a proprietary lockring, so a standard generic lockring will not thread properly. I would bet that was the cause of the stories you heard
Freddy Butler this. Even when simply backpedaling to reduce speed, the lockring must be tight. If you feel the pedals slip, even once, it may be enough to strip the hub. Really sucks if you have to learn this on a $300 wheel. Park Tool lockring spanner can be had for under $20. Hard forward pedaling will produce enough torque to tighten the cog.
I weight about 230 and i have been riding for about a year and a half and i have never bend my back wheel I only have stripped my hub because they were bad quality hubs and cause i didnt tighten the cog or lockring correctly
althought not specifically fixie related, i have some rims 15 years old. Get some good quality wheels built with proper double wall rims, stainless spokes, and decent hubs and they'll last a very long time. ...i ride up and down curbs and small flights of steps all day long. I break axles and spokes long before i damage the rims. I'm 220. my tires are 22 front and 25 on the rear so there's not much cushion there.
It's always just a matter of time that youll crash riding brakeless. No matter how hard you skid, it's not as effective as having a front brake. And not to sound like a snob, but if you cant skid its fine since static friction is greater than kinetic friction meaning you can stop faster and have less wear on your tires.
Yes, although having the strength and ability to skid means that you're also able to apply enough pressure to stop when it's most efficient, which is right before you start to skid. In other words, you don't have to hold your skid; you can go forward a bit and stop again like anti-lock brakes on a car.
+Der Von Nebenan If you are looking for a new hub and u dont want to spend alot i would go for the blb king or freestyle hubs, if u have more money i would go for the paul hubs, they rock! ;)
everytime i skid my rear tire goes up i can land back down but why does the rear go up? i have a 44 tooth gear but once again i can't seem to lock my legs and make my tire stay on the ground i also have toe clips
Philip Albuquerque Did you ever figure out why your back tire keeps coming up when you are trying to skid? I just got a fixie and I am having the same problem.
did you guys ever figure this out? it’s called a pop-skid. It happens when you quickly come off your saddle while you simultaneously push down on your dominant pedal while simultaneously pulling up with your non-dominant pedal. It causes the rear wheel to “pop” off the ground. If you ever so slightly pedal forward as you “pop” off the ground, it’ll cause the rear wheel to bounce multiple times when it comes back to the ground. That’s how I stop quickly riding brakeless.
That is easier to skid the bike when leaned over but it doesn’t actually help you stop , skidding with weight over saddle or seated helps you slow down faster
I started riding with 49x17. A great skid ratio, you can really pull long whip skids with it. I highly recommend it.
Lol brakes are for losers. *skids into vehicle*

Guys what's a good gear ratio for skidding? It's too hard to lock up my wheels
Ohhhh
I ride my fixed thats 50x17
I didnt know that thats really hard to skid stop until now..I just got it readin comments..

This honestly thought me how to skid
I have a ratio of like 46/14 is that a good ratio for skidding??
last night I did a skid really close to a cop car and after this they tried to chase me, it was amazing.

mexican Mac from "its always sunny in Philadelphia" duuude!

What shoes and pedal are those?
wont your tires burn fast?

easier to have a single foot strap on your dominant side so you just simply yank your foot upward and push down with the other foot
can i skid with mountain clipless ?
Did he had his toe clip on? I can't seem to skid at all without toe clips...
I need a fixie bike in my life..
This video... i like
is it oke using 24hole wheels on rear doing skidd? like mavic ellipse wheels or any wheels with 24h on rear
Fikri Achmad yea , lower spoke count doesn’t effect this. Just you may have to true it more often
Man, I don't even own a single speed bike, but your cool&positive attitude got me subscribing! Keep it up!
Sorin Grecu thanks you 🙌🏼😭
Can do with a single speed?

any problems with the Mavic Ellipse back wheel? I heard stories of the Cog jumping and stripping the threads when skid stopping?
I run a blue tr250 with a front ellipse, I need to get a matching rear

sounds like the cog and lockring weren't tight enough in that setup. you ALWAYS NEED to have a lockring when you plan to skid (and in fixed gear riding in general to be safe), and your lockring should be tightened with an actual proper lockring tool, not by hand. Mavic Ellipses use a proprietary lockring, so a standard generic lockring will not thread properly. I would bet that was the cause of the stories you heard
Freddy Butler I always wondered about the lockring problem, thanks
Freddy Butler this. Even when simply backpedaling to reduce speed, the lockring must be tight. If you feel the pedals slip, even once, it may be enough to strip the hub. Really sucks if you have to learn this on a $300 wheel. Park Tool lockring spanner can be had for under $20. Hard forward pedaling will produce enough torque to tighten the cog.

everytime i skid my rear tire goes up i can land back down but why does the rear go up? i have a 44 tooth gear but once again i can't seem to lock my legs and make my tire stay on the ground i also have toe clips
Philip Albuquerque Did you ever figure out why your back tire keeps coming up when you are trying to skid? I just got a fixie and I am having the same problem.
+Carlo Flores have you made sure you foot its touching the front tire. It can also be due to the force causing the back to bounce.
+Philip Albuquerque My problem is the opposite of yours, i want my rear tire to pop up but i can't make it.
+Philip Albuquerque It could be because the tire has excellent traction? That would be my only guess.
did you guys ever figure this out?
it’s called a pop-skid.
Youre near chaffey college in chino
as a beginner, i didn't know that it'd be better and easier when we're gonna be doing this leaning over ur bike and not just sit on the saddle
That is easier to skid the bike when leaned over but it doesn’t actually help you stop , skidding with weight over saddle or seated helps you slow down faster
@@LockedinCycling gotcha, thank you
You dont have to skid to brake. You can slowly try to pedal backwards and once you get slower you can use one foot to stop
