Pedestrian Call Logic at Diamond Interchange

  • Here’s an update at the Lacewood interchange in Halifax. Not much has changed but more protected turn movements have flashing arrows. As well, the pedestrian call logic has been cleaned up and time of day plans have been implemented.
I was able to figure out some issues with detection where phases would max out and I was able to set up some pedestrian “forgiveness” at the protected crossing.
The other ramp on the far side of the interchange is actually timed separately from the vehicle phases. Sometimes it can extend that phase but pedestrians are able to get across safely, assuming a driver turning right on red doesn’t mow them down.

People turning in the intersections rarely pay attention to pedestrians or cyclists. Especially when turning on a red signal.

Nice! Oh that's what they call it when the other light doesn't turn green right away: "passenger forgiveness"

The official feature is called ped recycle in the controller!

@@TheTrafficTech Thanks! So your company does work for the city traffic control division I guess?

@@SkyOfTheUniverse so Halifax has their own signal techs and electricians but I work for the Province of Nova Scotia. I’m the signals inspector (and electrician) for Public Works. I also program all the controllers that we own across the province.

Thanks for sharing a cool feture of cities that is often overkooked. What inspired you to get into this type of work? Have you ever visited my hometown of Montreal, Canada? Thanks for great videos

I've always found this type of infrastructure fascinating and wanted to make a career out of it some day. Obviously I have the collection aspect of it too but making a difference out around the province is very rewarding.
I actually have seen a lot of what Montreal is doing and some features I've rolled out are based on what they're doing.
I just passed through there last week actually!

What is the point of a dedicated right turn signal when turn on red is allowed?

    • @TheTrafficTech
      @TheTrafficTech  Před 3 měsíci +1

Right now, it just helps keep traffic moving during the adjacent green and to reinforce the ped crossing. There will be right on red restrictions coming here soon though.

Wonder when they will add an EN5

    Awesome!
Do many drivers go straight from the off-ramp to the on-ramp? I feel like it might be better to prohibit the through movement from the ramp, so that the right-turn signal could remain green. Seemed like drivers were just rolling through the red anyway, so might as well keep it green if it can be!

I did ask about that but it seems they want to keep the through movements. It would be helpful but the medians would have to be modified if through movements were restricted!

Are traffic lights interconnected to traffic lights down the line to keep synchronization? I find over a period of time traffic lights lose synchronization

These 2 intersections run off of the same controller so they’re always synchronized! As far as the further lights down, they are not. Those ones are owned by the city!
