@@dbracer No idea tbh. Ofcourse you should be doing your DD duty. Ofcourse you should be firing your main battery when you know you can kill or reset a cap and disengage from the fight. No need to die in first 2 mins just to cap a point too. If there is no support play accordingly.

Glad to see more vids Flamu, I feel like this video should be sent to every player on the EU server, especially the bit about fighting for caps and not giving them up for free, I've seen this happen so many times recently particularly when the enemy have less ships, it really grinds my gears!

The best performance videos show the destroyers surfing the grey detection areas. They never do anything in plain sight. They launch the torpedoes before detection, in the dark. They have a firing angle before opening fire and only shooting when the ship is focused on another target. The smoke is used more as a handful of sand in the eyes rather than a shield. They stay undetected and spot for the first half of the game when not looking for capping opportunities. They control areas of the map by rolling torpedoes across them. They do the same thing with gaps as well.

“Wrong, wrong, wrong!” Hallelujah! If you take up a DD slot on your team you need to play DD, play objectives, spot for your team, etc. You do this differently with Kleber than Shima, but you still do it. Denying the cap in this game is a perfect example.
One thing you clearly do but didn’t highlight is fire torps as close to your target as possible. Yes, Asashio has 20 km torps (or 16 with Torpedo Acceleration), but you ALWAYS improve your chances of hitting the target by closing the range. There’s nothing wrong with dumping torps into a choke point and/or group of BBs at longer range, but with 5.4 km concealment you often can get so much closer. (Flamu knows this and has discussed it multiple times in the past - I just thought it was worth emphasizing.) It drives me crazy when a DD with really long range torps thinks that’s an excuse to never get within 15 km of potential targets.
With things like Khaba you’re better acting like a CL, but you still belong in close proximity to the cap circles backing the other DDs.

I made the sprint to rank 1 in no time in the Asahio. Just like you said the guns are not joke, I killed so many dds because I got of the first volley with rpf and positioning. And the threat of these torps just stops a whole flank of bbs pushing in. Its really really strong if played correctly. Very nice gameplay!

Considering the size of the prize pot Wargaming dropped on Flambass for 50k+50k YT subs we really want to get Flamu over the 100k line. Flambass giveaway was epic 😉
Fun fact: Asashio and the tech tree Kagerou are extremely similar ships, and you can do like 80% of what you see here without having to spend a dime (the difference being the multiple torp hits on battleships, the price you pay for being able to torp cruisers and other destroyers). Don't sleep on IJN DDs.
Yeah... But no.
The Asashio torpedoes are long-range deepwater so they're massively better than Kagero's (except they can't hit destroyers and cruisers).
It also has access to smoke and reload booster which is just massively better than Kagero.
It also has lower concealment meaning it beats Kagero in a gunfight too.
And that's a massive difference. Those two ships, while sisters, are 100% different. Asashio doesn't have one of the IJN massive weaknesses (easy to dodge torps, bad guns), Kagero does.
It's better when top tier than Kagero, it's better at equal tier than Kagero and it's WAY better when uptiered than Kagero (massive difference on that last one because she handles radar cruisers way better).
@@dzello Asashio and Kagerou share the same concealment and guns. Asashio's effectiveness scales with the amount of battleships in a given match and whether or not she can get into the right position to attack said battleships unmolested. The former condition is easy to fufill because battleships have almost never not been popular in NA, but it's not guaranteed. The latter is the real issue, because being able to attack outside the range of radar cruisers or gunboat destroyers doesn't mean that Asashio can't be hampered by them. Any non-battleship can screen for Asashio's torps without worry. And she still wants to get as close as safely (or unsafely) possible to maximize the chances of hitting torpedoes.
@@flashtirade You're right, I checked: it's the air concealment that Asashio is better. Still a really nice plus because planes are quite annoying for destroyers.
As for Asashio's effectiveness scaling with the amount of battleships, it's actually not that true (though I understand why you think so, her torps not hitting cruisers and destroyers). So you'll understand why:
Let's say there's 4 battleships, you'll get 2 on your flank. That means you're gonna kill two battleships, then you won. Let's say there's 8 battleships, you'll get 2-6 on your flank. That means you're gonna kill.... 2 battleships again. Then, you'll win. It doesn't change because your limiter isn't your targets, it's your torpedo reload. Even if you add battleships, you just oneshot them (or almost) and it's your team who will actually kill most of the battleships regardless. In a low battleship number game, she's better than Kagero, in a high battleship number game, she's, at best, EVEN BETTER than the previous conditions.
As for the last part... Well, Asashio still deals with that better than Kagero by far so it's moot. Asashio obliterates Kagero in tier X matchmaking because she pumps out better and more torpedoes from further away while retaining a similar ability to kill destroyers (unless Kagero torps them which rarely happens).
@@dzello You underestimate the effect of non-battleship enemies. Ignoring CVs, enemy cruisers and destroyers can completely mess up Asashio salvos simply by being in front of their BBs. Not even counting radar or hydro, if the torpedoes get screened by a non-target that just happens to be passing by then 4 out of 5 battleship captains have enough brain cells to hit the rudder. This is amplified by the fact that in low-BB games, cruisers and destroyers are more likely to be in forward positions because they won't evaporate as easily to gunfire. In high-DD games even friendlies can mess up Asashio salvos by throwing theirs in the same area.
Asashio does uptier better than Kagerou, but that's mostly due to the greater presence of radar and T10 CVs. Also her torpedoes are more likely to be faster due to Torpedo Acceleration, which Kagerou can be punished heavily for taking.

The second part, you just explained WHY Asashio is better uptiered rhan Kagero.

Yep. She is one of the ships that i can feel comfortable using even as gunboat on some cruisers. with proper play you can even outgun most gunboat boat thx to her hull being stupidly low on water such that enemy gunboats actually have hard time landing shell properly on you even when they have good aim. Up-tiered is a bit difficult for me though because it is also team reliant. There are some doomed moments when your team lost to a single stalingrad leaving you alone to deal with it
Thanks for this video! I seriously hope every Asashio player sees this. Heck, Shima players too. So annoying seeing them avoid objectives and shoot torps from max range and then moaning that the caps are taken by the enemy.

I view the long torp range as not necessarily needing to reposition to pop torps. I find it really easy ship to play for me. BBs are scared of me, I can avoid Cruisers, and I have the concealment to detect DDs before they can see me.

Best asashio games are the ones where you gun diwn several dds because they focus the "strong gunboats" on your team :)
Once again, Shamu makes a triumphant video about a game where there aren't 2 or 3 or even any CVs (and rocket planes) to dodge over and over and over and over. Must be nice Shamu! WoW must grant you lots of SPECIAL FAVORS!
Would be interesting to see how the HSF Harekaze stands nowadays, especially now that it's back in the premium shop.
I find it to be a very balanced ship. Concealment, good guns, good torps, good speed, solid amount of HP, and the option of smoke or reload booster.
Never underestimate that Asashios guns. I've gunned down Fletchers with mine.
Priority Target is redundant for IJN DDs (and majority of DDs which are not gunboats). As a DD you can assume that once you are spotted you are targeted at least by few enemies, and being a good player you already know who can target you. I'd use Preventive Maintenance as a tier I skill for better torp tubes & guns survival.
Priority target is definitely not overrated. With it you know when it is safe to use your guns without any cover, you get a hint of when you're being torped, etc. If you assume you're always targeted by at least a few enemies, you're never going to use your guns from outside smoke or behind an island, and that's a lot of opportunities wasted. That's exactly the kind of play style Flamu is criticising here.

Flamu why don’t you use Torpedo Acceleration? Your range is still a respectable 16km but your torpedos go up to 72 knots of speed.

Funny that you mentioned Harekaze. I think it is one of the best designed premium ships due to the number of variety and choices given. I am playing it the last few days and one person asked this question... "Why use any other guns but the 100mm" Watching this vid from Flamu shows clearly that the choice is not as obvious between them. They all have advantages and disadvantages.

@@tegli4 i use 100mm guns just for the dpm and 32mm pen, spredsheets says they are the best too 😄
@@Tasukete_22 I also use them. But I noticed that I am fighting a lot of US/RU BBs and the 32mm penetration is not helping as much. The increase fire chance on the IJN 127mm ones might be more useful. Of course, that is why I said i like it, it gives you options and they are not as clear cut as just a spreadsheet :)

How does you follower count relate to you ability to give presents? There's no 'free give away' if you expect payment in the currency you call 'followers' to give it away...
WG gives bundles & codes to CCs to give away whenever they hit some milestone (like 50k followers,100k etc). It is pretty much a "free giveaway" considering that.
It's part of the CC incentive program that WG runs. He gets enough followers and they give him free shit to giveaway.
You guys do realize it isn't free, right? That's it is a trade, and not a give away... It may be a good deal if you don't earn any money yourself, but it's 'paid advertisement' and a form of trade (gifts for followers), so not a 'free give away'...

The main problem is that those 42% WR players doesn't watch any videos... "Just playing for fun" That's why they have those terrible WRs. They are don't give a shit about anyone advising them how to play more efficient. I always advice these players to watch some vids/streams from you to learn more about the basic game mechanics and map/ship awareness. Usually i end up being an idiot and being called a "cpt perfect" or anything like that. Sadly normal and good players are getting enough of this game and leaving very fast. How do i know this? Well i started to play this game almost 2 years ago now. And we have significantly more below 50% players than we had back at least 6-12 months ago. Now 70-80% of the average players are below 50% WR, what means that they are doing something wrong. (Losing more than winning constantly) Of course there are more new players as well, but here comes the first thing what i mentioned. They just don't looks like they want to learn anything before jumping in randoms and especially ranked. WG really looks like they fd up big time with that CV rework, and then when they released those new OP ships. Old players who got experience are turning away from the game. At least that's what i see and think. The games basic standards are going downhill... Sad... This ship is a nice example of how to waste a ships abilities to tryharding on doing dmg instead of playing for the team at first. Asashio has god tier concealment to catch even Kagero or Shima. Has nice guns to even really catch them. You can push back an entire flank of ships with her. If you play her wisely, and NOT just backline torping because "that's what it's made for". But this requires some basic ship awareness and tactical/team awareness. Not just farming dmg like a zombie and then lose because you haven't done shit with only torping. And not help your team to catch other DDs, spot other ships, harass BBs and everyone with constant spotting of them. Not to mention capping of course...etc., etc...

Doesn't Asashio has the exactly same guns and concealment as Kagero? If the DWT isn't as important as regular DD tasks, then you should be able to achieve the same stats with a Kagero. Let's see it?
But let's be honest. DWT is what makes Asashio. Stating otherwise is just plain contrarian.
This gameplay is a little unrealistic... Usually there are carriers around with tons of planes out to spot you while you try to be sneaky... I did exactly what u mentioned but still dd gets wreck when the planes spot you and everyone starts focusing on you
Those tips are all well and good but then you come to the Russian DDs who all have the worst detection tier for tier meaning you're always going to be outspotted by enemy DDs.
So yeah with the Ruskie DDs take the whole 'don't give up caps' thing with a grain of salt.
Despise most Asashio players as they won't DD. they have no confidence in their guns.
