      Bach lived and breathed music. He showed us music's possibilities. How he was able to compose so much of the greatest music ever written remains a mystery (at least to me).

    This is one of the most moving versions I have heard so far. Everything is precise, perfect and still sounding so human, so dramatic. The Matthäus-Passion's opening is, in my view, an exceptional, opera-type opening, surpassing even Mozart's openings.
    A part that always has me verging on crying is "Seht! Wohin? - auf unsre Schuld!" (Look! At what? At our fault!" with the preceding very dark modulation and chords.

      I usually sing the chorus 1 bass. Although it is possibly the most beautiful thing I've ever sung, I sometimes feel sad I was never a singer as a boy so I've never been able to sing the children's choir bit (sung here by the sopranos in the middle). I always get the shivers when they join. So simple yet magical.

    I just want to thank my mother for giving me a longplaying rekord (LP) with this work of choir - before I even knew who Bach was . She obviously knew me better than I did myself. I am so grateful to my dear mother, but I can’t thank her- because she is not here on earth anymore , miss you my dear mother; and thank you again for giving me this knowledge of music ❤️

    I am from the United States but I LOVE LOVE this musiic!! I gave a CD back in the day when I visited him that had this and many more lovely works of ABSOLUTE the best music...and it made my elderly father close his beatifal blew eyes and nod to the cadence of this work... I am so so so THANKFUL I had a lovely, genuine, kind, loving, intelligent, gifted, hard working, honest man who claimed me for his daughter and me...OH MY...YES ROBERT DONALD ...YOU WERE THE ONLY MAN AMONG MEN!!! you dressed impeccably, never EVER SAID AN UNKIND WORD ABOUT ANYONE ....YOU are MY DAD...AND I WILL FOREVER BE GRATEFUL TO HAVE HAD YOU IN MY LIFE...I miss you, Dad....especially our Saturday afternoon chats in the dining room, just you and me...yapping and chatting...over a plate of cheese, crackers, pickles...and a couple Cold beers.... I MISS YOU DAD!!!

    Splendid! The most beautiful version I evered heared of this particular part, was at the final end of the movie THX 1138, an SF Movie from 1971. This made such a hugh impression on my as a young kid, that it became my favorite piece of Bach. Unfortunately I never find out which orchestra was performing int that particular version.

    My first real encounter with classical music. Watching the movie THX1138, the end was astonishing for me. I can't describe the whole movie here, but very compact. In a future world where man are controlled by maschines, one person can escape. Leaving the underground city where he spend all his live, he climbs out of the there through a steep tunnel. And at the very end he opens the manhole cover and steps out, seeing for the first time the sun, which is going majestically down, coloring the world red and yellow. You can only see the silhouet of the man covering his eyes, and birds flying. And at the background this incredible music. Amazing!The music and image was burned in my young head and since then, I discovered the beauty of classical music.

      Ronnie, why do you think the THX 1138 filmmakers decided on that particular piece for that scene? The scene is about finally gaining freedom and the piece is about mourning over Christ's passion. I don't get the connection between the two. Do you? Just curious.

      G'day, Ronnie! Wow, you were introduced not only to classical music through that film, but absolutely great music by Johann Sebastian Bach from his St. Matthew Passion. He's considered by some to be the greatest composer of all time. I suppose that the reason to use that particular selection for the escape scene could be simply providing great music for a great moment. The film, as I recall, was a student film by George Lucas.

    @RealHogweed- look at what 1 Corinthians 1 to 11 says about inspiration.
    I am very certain that we can take that very literally. Gods spirit is literally present when 2 or more people decide to pray for something in Jesus's Name - see Matthew 18:19 and 18:20. I have experienced that numerous times.
    So what I am trying to say is this: It is very realistic to believe that Bach was doing the best he could to compose this music and was seriously inspired by God himself to get it done. Just like God's spirit is literally present in any church because there are multiple people present and praying.

    i hate both the atheist and the religious comments about this music, this is the product of the sheer genious of a man, inspired by a god no more that Homers Iliad was inspired by the pagan gods. to say that god is responsible for this is an offense to bach himself, and to say this is bad only because it has a religious theme is madness. i can appreciate this, no matter if i'm atheist or not.

      He dedicated his whole work to the glory of God. Bach said: "Where there is devotional music, God is always at hand with his gracious presence!"

    ah, i'd say that the indirect argument is all another story :) my point was that if this kind of music would be all a product of gods mind then we should be able to see people that never studied music theory compose this stuff. i'm sure Bach put a tremendous effort in composing his music, and then hundreds of years later people come and say: "NOPE. god did it."

    it depends on what we intend by "inspired". of course the theme was inspired by the idea of some god. but when i wrote that cooment i was thinking about people that believe this music is a direct product of the mind of a god, with bach being merely some sort of intermediary.

      The baroque 'a' is a bit lower than the modern. It's the lower 'a' that gives this perfomance its depth.

      @@bumbumDK Maybe that's why when I listened to Bach's "Vergnügte Ruh" and followed along with the original score, the score was in D but when I compared the key I was hearing with my piano, it came out a half tone lower (D flat/C sharp).

    And do you think Bach believed the latter? Personally, I don’t. However, coming back to your original post, every Christian, including Bach, would obviously affirm that “God is responsible for this” at the very least indirectly through creating this universe and sending us the Messiah (thus creating the basis of this piece) :p

    It's sublime music. What, are they supposed to look like they're on Lawrence Welk and grin through the whole thing? Not arguing on behalf of Xtianity, btw.
    Black happens to be "concert dress' - the tradition handed down as a kind of uniform. I'm not fond of it myself but haven't been able to come up with a suitable alternative.

    I believe it wouldn't be an offense AT ALL to J.S.Bach - to say that God was responsible for this or even that this piece was created by God himself.
    I think that J.S. Bach would agree - but to assume this one needs to be an old-fashioned Middle Ages kind of person.

Also what he listen to now is not just Bach, but hundreds of vocalists, musicians, the directors and conductors, in short, it is truly the fruit of a shared humanity, across countries and eras...

    Where are the "dramatic" elements? The fast heart rate during "Kommt Ihr Töchter, helft mir klagen" ? It's a 12/8 metro but that does not mean to make a "waltz" out of it. Are humans feeling like this while there's grief in the air? And why always put an accent ? ONE-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12-ONE-2-3-4......? WHY? Ist gruesome! Horrible! Listen to Karl Richter (1971) and his performance ( "Münchener Bach-Chor").....
