Maile Ohye from Google covers the five most common errors she finds in SEO, and then concludes with six quick tips to make sure you're on the right track.
Mistake 1: No value proposition. Why would a user select my site in search results? 0:20 Mistake 2: Taking a segmented approach isntead of a holistic online strategy 1:30 Mistake 3: avoid rel="canonical" isntead use: rel="next" and "prev" for paginated content 3:07 Mistake 4: Following SEO trends 4:48 Mistake 5: Slow iteration. 6:05
you should've listed the tips to help improve and the cycle tips which are much more valuable than the mistakes which are old and not as relevant. her tips and advice for improvement were awesome!
This is definitely a good video that emphasizes common mistakes that most SEO specialists commit. When I started as an SEO marketer before, I have also committed some mistakes. However, now, I am very much confident that there is no room for mistakes whenever I am working.
Great video Maile Ohye! I agree with all of them especially No. 2! It's so important to integrate SEO strategy with everything that you do and not have it be a separate entity!
I believe that a lot folks should really get started promoting their small business on the web. I also reckon that ranking in the major serps will be an incredible starting point. Wonderful video!
Great! Thank you so much for sharing it. This kind of mistake is very common in seo world. Many seo specialist are making it a habit so we need to avoid it now.
Thanks for the video, good for people who are just starting off and need a basic overview. Although, I'm applying these steps successfully will likely be tougher than it seems
This video is great! Very interesting to relate mistakes our Company and I have made in the past. We have been an SEO Expert Team for about 5 years now and I can say that some of these happen all the time. Like always we must learn from our mistakes so that we never repeat in the future ;)
Just as with many other advertising methods, businesses have a few moments to present what sets their business apart from their competitors. I can see why focusing on the value proposition would be so important.
Hi Maile, I really enjoyed your video about mistakes in SEO. I especially liked the great point about keyword density rather than great compelling content that will engage users for lasting value. I definitely have adjusted my focus. I think your video is timeless:)! Thanks.
Good points. I'd add a caveat: Before bothering with 1, 2, or 3, follow Maile's advice. Too many people try to turn business building into a job. What I mean by this is that they assume they should get paid hourly. The best sites have hundreds (if not thousands) of hours that go into creating contents/programs that deeply satisfy their users. Once that is all up and running, then each of these, particularly 2, and 3, become that much easier.
If you’re just getting start with SEO, this is a must-watch video. Not only can you avoid these 5 mistakes and save yourself the time and trouble, but you can also benefit from the tips that Google gave. Thanks Google, we can always count on you for tips and advice.
I really delighted in viewing your video. I discovered your understandings are fascinating and cannot wait to view your other video. I do have a concern however, how long have you been in this market?
I call this "Thinking around the corner." We can't always see/hear, but we have an "intuition" , perhaps, or what's to come. Thinking around the corner is really about getting back to basics. Get out there, tell people WHO you are, WHERE you are, and WHAT you do. Billy Lowe
I have been beating this drum since the early days of Google, that people use search engines to look for products, services and information. They also use search engines to ask questions. Say what you mean, Mean what you say and Say who you are: Anticipate what a USER might search for in terms of information, photos and questions. Then provide this information on your website in a meaningful way.
for example, if the search was film, you could have filters in the sidebar like "indie films" "short films" etc. recognizing that these sites have to compete against giant companies like Time Warner or Disney. Something to think about.
Learning from your mistakes is extremely important, its what makes business grow stronger. Since SEO is a constantly changing industry it is very easy to be doing the right thing at the time and be out of date in the future. Its important to make sure everything is of the highest quality to avoid this!
Too many "SEO experts" are stuck in the past and one can't help but wonder if they've ever read the primary patent of March 2005, much less, pay any attention to this type of available guidance! I sure wasn't confused by this video and indeed found the information encouraging toward the path I'm on. It's all about the methods of dissemination of information and the implementation, isn't it ;)
Hi Maile, Thank you very much for your pointers, though I'd like to see more description for some of the points. In your SEO Instructions, what does "Be Smart about your tags and Site architecture" mean? My four small sites seem to be avoiding all the SEO mistakes and black-hat no-no's. They're listed in Webmstr Tools and Analytics and I manage those frequently. I'm always adding well researched content, and minimizing affiliate links. Although they are getting some traffic, and there's been no manual actions against them, none of them are ranking anywhere for any keywords I'm trying to rank for, and they seem to be non-existant in the SERP's for anything, though they are indexed and the sitemaps are up-to-date. I want to be on Google's good side. What am I missing?? These are the kind of answers I've been searching for. After a page has been indexed, is it detrimental to adjust the site title to a more descriptive one?
Great to hear these tips from Google themselves, thanks Maile.
