Tonight's episode is a fun one! Once per quarter, we invite all of our patrons out for a full day of recording games. In our last event, we decided to do a tournament. We each played on a point system, and at the end of the night, the top 4 got to battle it out in a final game to see who was champion. It was a great game and it showed off the power of the decks at the table, as well as the skill of the pilots.

Armageddon into Cyclonic Rift Is like 2020 in a stack
đđđ
lol
That whole sequence was fucked up
Surely someone's playing pox though
Lol
The cards in hand meter is amazing.
Rodrick Plum Came here to say the same! Love it.
That's why that is?
Hey guys, Iâm the Heliod player in this video. A couple notes about the video. Spoilers in the reply below:
Yes, the Armageddon play was pretty feels bad. I didnât realize Folger had seven mana available, and honestly, the MLD was an aggressive move that I didnât need to do. My other blunder was letting Folger hold on to that Carpet of Flowers one turn too long. In regards to why I use the old Heliod over the new one, I find it that the new one is more suited to a Death and Taxes midrange combo build while the old one I can take advantage of the vigilance and enchantment tokens to utilize a Full Stax build with Static Orb, Storage Matrix, etc. CZcams comment sections suck, so if you have any questions, just @ me on Twitter at ilvaldi. Thanks!
@@Ilvaldi I don't like it because of two reasons. You did a pretty good job of having answers for the whole table but I feel alot of times, theres usually 1 player that isn't as badly hurt and thats definitely how it was for a while with niv-mizzet still executing most of his gameplan. Additionally, the win-cons and routes without the other heliod are too slow. luminarch was cool but even at 8 mana per turn, its still like 4 turn cycles before the whole table is dead. 16 + 32 + 48 < 120, 16+32+48+64 > 120
@@Ilvaldi you have an awesome build and it was fun to watch someone play something different. Kudos!
@@ssnow5516 Sure, but in situations like those, the game plan is to force that 1v1 match up against the player who isn't as crippled. Even then, the Niv player still needed to find a way to deal with Gideon in play. The thought process/philosophy of the deck is to use Stax (whether it be your own or your opponent's) to create game-theory board states where players are interlocked with each other in a gridlock, then methodically cutting each of them off. I'm abusing the fact that everyone is playing combo with parity-breaking Stax pieces, and I'm subverting their own parity breakers against them. This, in a way, is similar to how Death and Taxes would approach the problem in legacy, or old school Sligh decks. While I am dealing with higher life totals, the approach is similar, which is to apply pressure to the board, so that even though the time-to-kill is longer, the rate-to-respond is also lowered.
Also, as an addendum, I think new Heliod is great, but this is more of a preference/confidence-in-being-able-to-play with me choosing to play the old Heliod. I think new Heliod is better at utilizing hatebears, and some of the newer cards (particularly Hushbringer with the suped up Torpor Orb effect + auto-lifelink) are perfect fits for the new Heliod. I think White in general is in a good spot to be on the rise with Drannith Magistrate, and we'll see where WotC wants to take it with either Hatebears, Stax enchantments, or more combo pieces.
@@Trainwithseb Thank you!
that Heliod decks performance was actually kinda insane. Love seeing an underdog do so well.
That troll at the start of the game is soooo epic :D Good to see that there is still room for trolls at the cEDH table :D
Imagine if it baited out a force!
@@apock2474 It was definitely a bait. No doubt there.
Love that Charles turned a cedh game into an edh Game.
> Zack Gemstone Caverns into Silence
> Whole table sweats
Zack: Tremble before the might of... Elvish Mystic
This joke was literally in the video
Zack is a legend. I have to agree, it WAS worth it
Man these are very high quality videos, I can't imagine how much of a pain they are to edit. The cards in hand meter, life meter, and card blow ups are really great, not to mention the cutesy animations. Keep up the good work, you got a sub out of me.
Oh cool, a deck with the new Heliod
â...Heliod, God of the Sunâ
Oh shit
that turn 1 was the best turn 1've ever seen with that silence
Less than 5 minutes in and already the silence turn one Zack pulls on us gives me that turn one win ptsd
This was SUCH a good game! Holy cow! That Rift response to Ravages of War was one heck a play! Excellent start to the season!
Much respect to Zack for that first turn. Also: I enjoy the card counters for each player!
What a game. Very worthy of a top 4 final table. Best turn one ever lol
Just want to say I love the cards in hand graphic. It looks great, and provides some useful information.
Hey guys! I see youâve improved your gameplay quality and display. Great game, and keep it up!
Took me half the game to notice it wasnt the heliod I thought it was
Loved the editing and effects on this one, the little zaps from mana crypt were fun
aaaaah the secret tech of cockblocking the land destroying stack deck, and winning. now that's satisfying to watch.
Perfect game ! Loved it ! Thanks for this content !
Mono W almost got there... PS: what a channel man! Glad to see such a high quality work!
Wow, what a game. Charles's deck was especially impressive
i love the eyes you gave during the sushi hulk opener XD
I really like the addition of the hand counters. Also keep up the great work guys
The new overlay and 60fps are great. Thanks guys
What a great game, thanks for making this channel!
I also play Niv-Mizzet! So glad to see it in this channel
Just due to the way it forced him to narrate, I bet Ryan begs someone not to play Storage Matrix for a long time.
Wow. Probably your guys' best video yet. The game was solid and amazing (Rip Scott though, was rooting for Niv đ), the commentary was on point, and all those little HUD changes (hand size bars, relevant cards briefly flashing when triggering) made it even more watchable than before. Serious props!
Wow! Thank you very much!
God bless you for keeping track of the amount of cards in hand
I like the "number of cards in hand" visual.
I don't think a channel has mastered the art of capturing a live game of mtg as much as y'all have.
3:48 Silence even stopped the music. The most powerful play of all time.
that game was absolutely insane, somehow stax seemed fun and i have to say that recovery of everyone after the big destruction play was impressive.
Couldn't Scott have activated Nezahal to avoid being rifted?
Yes. Nezahal comes back end of turn. But i don't think it would've changed much... but maybe. Nezahal is a good blocker and scott developed his mana really fast.
Not only is Nezahal a good blocker, it also draws cards wheh others play non-creature spells, like mana rocks.
I immediately noticed this as well, He would've been in a commanding position if he did that. Maybe he REALLY wanted all the cards in his hand? Even so, I think nezahal on the board could've helped more than pretty much anything in his hand after that land wipe and cyclonic rift lol.
I think having a Nezahal would've put him in a really strong position as well, drawing so many cards from the rift reset and eating attackers from Folger as well
Yup talk about miss play
Mono white did some business! Not bad.
overloaded cyclonic rift in response to ravages of war was one of the most brutal plays iâve ever seen
The Grasp of Fate interaction with commanders is pretty interesting. There's a bunch of different cards that do that sort of thing but only some of them actually allow commanders to return from the Command Zone and some that don't. Different wording/formatting on different cards cause some of them to act differently.
This mad lad plays old Heliod in CEDH
This was awesome!
Always love to see Medium Green played! đ
Yes! Nice Game and hand counter!
I just realized half way into the video charles is playing the old heliod not the new one
I am surprised Scott didn't use Nezahals ability to blink out when the cyclonic rift hit.
@@MrParagonical that only affects artifacts though?
Awesomeness... love it!
15 turns, 1 spell countered...HOW!?
And with 3 blue players, one that was supposed to be control.
RecklessFables MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY!!!
Zack is definitely the MVP of this game. It's not always about winning, it's about sending a message. That had to have been a big relief.
That mono-white stax deck is a MONSTER! I can imagine that many games that night ended through Heliod commander damage
"I suggest you check out Charles' decklist, especially"
Me, 10 minutes into the video: pulls up deck list
Fantastic battle... congratulations
I really like this video because it showcases something I have been saying since this trend of bashing white started: Mono white is NOT underpowered. I honestly never understood why all of a sudden someone said white is crap and everyone thought it was cool to jump in that wagon. I have been using a delightfully oppressive monowhite deck for years and not once I thought I was at a disadvantage against powerful decks.
All that and 1 cyclonic rift makes you lose is what they mean by that like this game clearly demonstrated
Was the Nezahal delayed flicker ability just missed around 17:00 when ravages/rift were on the stack to keep a 7/7 around after it all resolved? He had the cards in hand to activate it and there were no cursed totem type effect active.
Charles out here living the life I want to live.
Storage matrix seem really interesting!!! Might get one for my Urza :p
It is not a mono artifact and still works when tapped so there is better for that
Iâm pretty sure it doesnât work when tapped. It still got the old school artifact text like winter orb.
Hey guys, love the channel and the quality content. Question, what kind of setup do you have to play matchâs during quarantine? Iâd love to get some games in since my LGS has been closed for months now. Thanks!
We use webcams (or phones) to play. We meet up via a video conferencing software and play.
nice match! Spellseeker enters with a +1+1 counter, when he blocks tymna was a 2/2
wow a mono white cEDH deck that slaps.
I like that everyone points out small blunders about the game, but guys come on, they played for almost 2 hours and all we see is 22 1/2 minutes. Everyone makes mistakes when the cognitive load is so high :D
my fave lock ive managed is: eon hub + stasis + null rod + mycosynth lattice.
9:52 The Cyclonic Rift on Grasp of Fate would no longer work that way with the change in Commander death triggers, correct?
amazing game!
perfect cyclonic rift play. gg fulger
@playing with power mtg NIcol Bolas Playmat?? how can I find that one? Would be appreciated.
I think gideon of the trials was really good in that it slipped under the radar of removal so long even if someone had the manabases to win it would have stopped it
What a great game!
Top 10 Cyclonic Rifts of all time. No contest
Armageddon into Cyclonic Rift, huh? Yeah that pretty much sums up 2020
that silence was the best play ever
Correct me if Iâm wrong, but if Blind Obedience has the orzhov hybrid symbol in the card text, how can it be used with a mono-white commander? From what I looked up, hybrid mana symbols count towards the color identity of the card so shouldnât it be illegal in the mono-white deck? Still a kick ass deck but just curious
Since itâs in the reminder text and not the card text, itâs legal.
Still can't get over zack didn't tymna turn 2. Crazy man!
Was aven mindcensor still in play around 19:00 minute mark?
69 views, thats what I like to see. Great content btw!
its interesting that of the 2 different thrassos & tymna decks the one that isn't flash hulk won.
Love Charlesâs deck! But how is playing Blind Obedience, I thought that was an Orzhov card because of the hybrid BW extort activation cost?
Reminder text doesn't impact color identity.
Big brain turn one
was there a reason why scott didnt activate nezahaul in resp to the rift?
TBH Charles' most valuable card was Scott's moon.
Am I the only one that saw the eyes on Tymna flash when they mentioned flash and got freaked out at the beginning of hands being revealed?
17:40 great turn 1 over here
So many Niv-Mizzet triggers were missed this day
They weren't missed, I just assumed they weren't bothering to spell them out because Gideon was preventing damage.
3:03 Arenât mana symbols that are not part of your commanderâs color identity illegal in your commander deck?
Blind Obedience has a hybrid W/B mana symbol in one of itâs abilities. Or is hybrid mana allowed now?
The hybrid mana in Blind Obedience is part of Extort's reminder(?) text, which means Blind Obedience itself doesn't have a hybrid mana symbol in its text. If it had, you wouldn't be able to play it in mono W
Vasco Barros That is very interesting. Thanks for your response
@@vascobarros24 this is correct on both parts. Reminder text is the correct term.
some missed niv mizzet triggers at 14:41 or am i just missing what he is pinging with the triggers?
Wasnt gideon preventing damage?
Amazing game
Charles is the hero we need
Scott probably Should have blinked out Nezahal in Response to Rift, having that on board after Geddon would have been major
Finally!âș
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Scott miss a lot of Niv triggers because Niv also triggers from your draw step?
shouldnt spellseeker have a +1/+1 counter from neoform? not that it matters, but still
13:50 scott could have drawn 2 cards for Nezehal
Every video i'm like wow I need to make this deck lol
Dose this interaction with graspe of fate work for other cards with same kind of effect ???? This IS very bizzar
Yes, as long as they say "exile [something] until..." they will return it even if going to exile is replaced with going to another zone, as long as it hasn't left the zone it actually went to. This isn't true with cards that say "exile [something] ... return the exiled card(s)" specifically because the cards are not exiled if they went to a different zone.
That Grasp of Fate, and in general, commander into the command zone and back again ruling is scuffed.
I thought "Exile" meant the creature is now in the Exile zone, and the option to have it go to the Commandzone nullifies the trigger of the "leaves the battlefield and returns back" clause.
That's actually janky.
3 blue players and no counter for Ravages of War. Brutal
scott could have blinked Nez until end of turn to dodge the rift.
are proxys allowed in the patreon league?
Yes they are!
Why didnât Scott activate nezahal in response to cyc rift?
âCyclonic rift isnât too opâ~ Everyone that plays blue
What is the orange bar underneath the card size?
One meter is cards in hand. the other meter is life total.
@@PlayingWithPowerMTG Ah. They are both really cool and helpful as a viewer. It must take a lot of time to edit those. Also love the effects on the board like the mana crypt triggers.
There were so many times Niv-Mizzet didnât draw from other playerâs instants and sorceries and dealt 1 damage to any target from draws..
Hans coria yes, it kind of sucked that Scott forgot his draws. However Gideon was preventing Niv from doing any damage with his ability, though.
Missed triggers. It happens.
@@Ilvaldi Which kind of sucks considering most Niv combos resolve around decking yourself and winning with a card like Oracle or Lab maniac.
