- Stephen Curry is the greatest shooter the NBA has ever seen. Steph Curry’s shooting form is the main reason to why he is such a great shooter. Steph’s shooting ability is one of the main reasons the Golden State Warriors have been so successful recently. Stephen Curry has put tons of work into his shot mechanics and in this video we break down why Steph Curry’s shooting form allows him to make any shot he wants.
Music: - Sport
Steph curry is not ONE of the best shooters we’ve ever seen. He’s undeniably, unquestionably, irrefutably THE greatest shooter of all time. There’s no one even remotely close to him. He’s on a different level, an entirely different atmosphere.
Lebron better shooter
No other player of such a overwhelming expert on a skill in basketball, let alone being the most valuable skill.
@@xembones 😂
Only one remotly close is lillard i'd say
3 point shooter I don't think it's possible for him to hit the contested mid ranged consistently like Kobe MJ KD
Another thing that makes Steph’s shot so hard to guard is his high release. The arcs on his shots are insane
Very true that high release makes it much more difficult to block
all nba players have high release, if you don't good luck getting in the league
@@myweirdsecondchannelwithap9070 you clearly don't understand the point im making.
@@nakkesha which is?
@@myweirdsecondchannelwithap9070 that his release point and arc is higher than the average…. I remember learning about his jumpshot a couple years ago on sport science
Enjoy him while you can, there may never be another Steph Curry. Sure someone might break his 3pt record one day but the range of difficulty of Stephs shots and finishes are unbelievable. Box office worthy.
Whoever breaks it won’t shoot a lick over 37% from 3, that’s the craziest part
why?@@mauricedoug314

We already have joakim noah idk what u on abt
Their will absolutely never ever be another 100%
Probably one of the best breakdowns of Steph Curry’s shooting form
Thank you glad you enjoyed it
Agreed, everyone always talks about his upper body form but never his lower body form(or lack there of).
Yup
Lmao, no...
There's a video on CZcams in which Curry's personal skill coach Brandon Payne mentions that one thing Curry especially trains for is independent control over his upper and lower body. That way he can perform the same consistent shooting motion with his upper body while independently having his lower body do all the other necessary stuff (e.g. create balance, jump and turn towards the basket). This video demonstrates that very well.
There will probably not be another like him in whatever years of life I have. It is a privilege to witness. He is to 3-point shooting, what Wilt was to inside scoring.
Me who doesn't have enough energy for a 2 motion shooting form:
*Maybe I am Steph Curry*
The biggest element to his shooting is his confidence in making them and the tenacity to utilize his speed and range to make a basket, doesn't matter if he misses the first 30 attempts, he will still go for the next 30 and believe that he will most likely make them go in.
Confidence is the most underrated aspect of shooting
Well if I could make 104 three pointers in a row in practice, I’d be pretty damn confident too lol.

You have finally unlocked the Di Vinci Code that is Stephen Curry. This is our local living legend here in the Bay Area and I'm obsessed with this guy's technique and mechanics. But, the thing that was hiding in plain sight I couldn't quite see you solved for me finally. It is the lower half of the body, the legs and the sheer fact he is the rare player ever in the history of the sport to not land with a single, singular form or follow through with relentless unwavering consistentcy, but, as you brilliantly laid out with pin point percise detail, Steph isn't restricted to any one way of landing or limited to one rigid way of finishing his shot release or inflexible to changing of the direction his lead shooting foot points toward. I struggled and struggled to find the hidden secret knowledge that made his shot style so unique and original only for you to decode that modern cosmic riddle and arrive at the there in wide open is the obvious.
Thank you, my dude.
Thank you , this is a great breakdown. When he’s done people will be pouring over everything he did because they will finally start to understand how unique he is, and your work here will be there for them when they finally get it.
Thanks so much. This is the best explanation of Curry's form I've seen
Thank you glad you enjoyed the breakdown!
No it’s not

I think Harden still got more "pausing" in his form, He's waiting to reach the apex of his jump to release the ball.
Steph Curry shooting movements (the jump the rotation) are Not completely over, after the release, i think.
my thoughts exactly
What is the most shocking to me is, even with the speed of his release. He still makes every single one of them!
My HS coach was an elite college shooter and he actually taught this single motion technique. I improved tremendously but back then it wasn't even conceivable to be taking shots like Steph does. Just thinking about pulling up from 3 with my right foot behind my left is just insane and he knocks it down no problem. It's not just reps to get to that point but he truly has a gift or like JJ Reddick said he may have unlocked a new level of consciousness.
I can promise you no one jumps straight up and down. They typically land a little ahead of where they start.
You’re right every shooter does land a little bit in front but not every shooter lands with their feet in a split stance or on one leg
Not on fadeaways
We actually ran drills to do just that. Sprint while dribbling. Hop stop on the X, rise straight up, hit the jumper. Land on the X, get your rebound, and repeat.
Best breakdown of his form!! Very insightful
Thank you!
Great analysis.. Very educational and easy to understand
Perfect breakdown 🔥 also his landing depends heavily on what defenders do. If he doesn’t have landing space he’ll land with his feet out to the sides
Great breakdown New sub
Some shooters don’t have the strength to pause the shoot in one motion to take advantage of the potential energy of the ball coming up from there hips
Most two motion shooters grew up where defense was played and rules were followed. One motion requires some space in order to smoothly bring the ball up through the body and finish with the release. If you are banging up against defenders all day, the ball has to be high or you have little chance to get the shot off. The reason so many of the previous generations shot two motion shots is that you had to elevate with a hand in your face and find that moment to release the shot.
Curry and others have a lot space when they start their shots (even with defenders closing quickly). Further, with the NBA casting aside rules and allowing traveling (double step backs, gathers, walking into shots, etc.), finding space is much easier.
I know some of the outstanding defenders I played with in college would strip a one motion player all day. If you turned into the shot with the ball below your mid-chest or higher, they would swipe it instantly.
A lot of people talk about klays "perfect form" but to me Steph has the perfect form
look wise, klay all day. Effectiveness, Curry all eternity
@@everythingaboutbasketball1939 To me Steph's form was more appealing but then again it is preference and I shoot like him. Do you have any specific reason for choosing klays?
@@lucidstudious750 Klay's was the perfection of mechanics. Right stance. Right balance. Right elbow. Right follow through. etc. etc.
Curry's is all about momentum. It's a rhythm shot. It is also subject to more variance and inconsistency due to all of the variables. But, it works for him.
I shoot more like Klay, and even with my body failing, it is still consistent and high percentage.
I’m 2 mins in & your analysis is killing it. Watched hella Steph videos including sports science one but I fuck with your insight
Love this video 🔥
Thank you
3:12 Klay was like bad shot...SWISH!!!😅😅
Been trying to explain this and practice with my son. I just sent him this video ✊🏾
Thank you this really help me so much i now i shoot for curry range Btw i love your vids
Stephen Curry's shooting form break down: One motion release, Sweep and Sway, Feet are turned and not squared, dip the ball, eye follow the ball after release, elbow/hand release in line with the rim.
Break it down however you want but you can clearly see all throughout this video that steph has unique intangibles that not even the best shooting coaches can teach. Steph operates in a different plane. There is no debate on who the greatest shooter is. You can only argue on who comes second after Curry
And they call fútbol the beautiful game. Poetry in motion
Look at the arc on some of these shots
steph owns the three point line and beyond
i have a similar 1 motion shooting form as curry(i worked to copy his shot as best as i could) but his difficulty of angles for making contested or awkward 3s has been so hard to try to be consistent with. I have the range but i usually need that extra dribble or 2 to get in position for the quick release form. Definitely using his shot form for 3 has made me a way more consistent 3 point shooter i try to do 2 motion sometimes and its way to slow for me, I usually come up short or over shoot with 2 motion. Quick release form seems way easier for me I can just see the moment i release if the shot is goin in. I love hooping fr.
I think kids have a one-motion shooting form because they have less power than adults but I'm not sure if that's the same with Steph but kids would instinctively do that.
This might be the reason why he shoots differently than most NBA players.. since he started very very Young due to his Dad being in the NBA
Curry probably did a crazy amount of chair shooting to independently always shoot with great upper mechanics
Not saying I’m a curry but I actually think I do some of this. I’m a lefty and recently I’m better shooting off a quick turn movement but I also have a habit of trying shots off-balance on purpose but I turn in the air to straighten my shot. Curry is definitely perfect though.
Guarding steph would make me go insane. Bro does not miss
The feet are not aligned to the basket but at a slight angle to the left (with his right foot in front), this aligns the right side of the body with the rim. If his feet are aligned to the basket you will see him "sway" or kick his right leg slightly to the left in order to align his right side with the rim. In short: his elbow needs to be in front of his body and this is only possible by aligning the feet to the left.
Its not his form, its his focus. He is able to focus and not think about his form which allows him to hit all of the crazy shots he makes.
Where does the power come from? How is deep range shooting so effortless looking?
This is basically how I shoot mainly upper body mechanics
The best breakdown of Curry's shot. I learned a lot from this. Thanks!
Thank you glad you learned from it
golden
Personally I don't believe Klay Thompson has a 2 motion shooting form as there is no visible hitch. When a shot has a hitch that is where the term 2 motion comes from.
In fact Klay's shot is more fundamentally sound than Curry's.
Curry can shoot from everywhere not only because of 1 motion, but because it's a lower release point and he doesn't jump as high. His shoot has a push element to it, not just a flick of the wrist.
klay has a 1.5 motion
i recall a heavy debate on which shooting great to learn from
Steph Curry's shooting form cannot be replicated in a sense as no one in history shoots a quick release 1 motion high rainbow arc at the clip like he does
and note, sometimes his body and at times his footwork are off/varied, more so he does it any range with spontaneity
this would be in the kareem skyhook realm or big fundamental's bank shot - can imitate it but you aint ever getting a perfect copy
coz that sauce needs natural talent
instead his splash brother would be the one to emulate as the prototypical shooting motion & form
Klay's 2 motion shooting form is 100% fundamental - learnable & coachable with consistency & muscle memory ingrained
@Nonstop Basketball , I really want you to specifically look at Steph's shooting mechanics/form from the last game vs Denver 4/2/23. I watched that entire game and this was one of the RARE occasions where I could NOTICEABLY see a "hitch" or just something OFF about his shooting mechanics from the get go. To the point I was able to call from launch whether or not his shot was going in last night. It was WEIRD AS HELL. It looked like his mechanics were completely broken/off by a good margin...
I just took a look at it and I see what you mean. 2/14 shooting and some of his misses did look weird. Could be a slight injury bothering him or maybe just an off night
would love to see a vid of misses and how the shooting form might differe as to how the player is defended and how that impacted them missing the shot, not just missing with good form
also a vid on MPJ's shooting mechanics would be awesome (after the lilliard vid) as he's another unguardable shooter
at 3: 57 steph did violation ...... by moving his pivot
Honestly, I think his shooting ability comes from his biology makeup. The way his bones are structured from the hip to his elbow allows him to shoot the ball in a straight line like he does. No amount of shooting will allow you to be able to shoot like that. Shaq could shoot 10,000 threes per day and will never be able to match Stephs 3pt%, because of his size. His body structured wouldn't allow him to shoot the ball in a straight line as much as Steph.
His 3 pt % would have increased, he would had to adapt but yes it wouldn’t nearly be as high as someone who has a more nimble and explosive build Steph’s height and mobility combined with his form and practice has most definitely put him where he is in terms of shooting
When I was a kid I had a form similar to Curry's- ball in front of my face elbows ready to launch with better power as a scrawny kid. I was pretty accurate. Then I saw how Jordan shot the ball and how cool he looked while shooting, and changed my shooting form. It required more strength and I became less accurate. Years pass and gave up basketball without really reverting back to my previous form. I should have stuck with it.
You could have been Steph 😅
Im a good shooter but never realized me and curry have the same 1 motion shot. Its a very good type of form and its very quick and accurate
I have a one motion shot as well, but only because I lack the power to shoot from range as a 5'4 guy. I really have to put body into it and I can't pause and shoot when I'm midair.
Nowhere near close to Steph though, bro is amazing.
I'd also like to point out that I thought my way of shooting was flawed, but Steph has almost perfected it. It makes sense when you think about it, a one motion shot has the potential to be better than a 2 imo. If you can master both even better.
❤
Pure Jumper
In terms of the aesthetic of the mechanics do you guys think that Steph or Harden has a prettier shot?
That’s a difficult question I might have to go with harden but it’s pretty close
Steph
Steph because the creativity of some of his shots are ‘pretty’ in itself.
Steph shot is much prettier
Its pretty amazing, cause steph is not very high in nba standard and his jump is low, but he still make points over far higher players.
he lines up his shoulders/elbow in a way that increases his shot %. people have the common misconception of lining up their body straight to the rim and wonder why they keep missing. if people want to shoot like curry, study his form. memorize it. dont just want him shoot the ball and watch it go in. watch his body motion. be a student of the game. dont just be a fan of his
That release is ridiculous. You can't guard that.
You really cant

Klay,PG and KD have one motions not 2 motions (KD actually has a 1.5 motion)
actually pg is 2 motion klay is 1.5 and kd is 1.5

I feel like this has been covered in 2015 already
there's a stepback and then there's a Steph-back :/ one more deadly
That’s true
I always thought KD and PG13 were one motion shooters like Curry and two motion guys were more like LeBron or Kobe
It’s a “ swing” rather than a motion. Think a catapult
He was small so as a kid he shor from his hip that's how I was now I have a one motion shot
Talk about the thumb flick he has
Steph used to have thumb flick, but he doesnt anymore. So it's probably not necessary for good shooting.
Most players actually have a 1.5 motion shot
Wait till you see Canon Curry.
"the perfect shooting form doesn't exist"
it's his hand game
i mean all the explanation don't mean nothing to me tbh. curry just gona curry. and you can't stop him
I wish he shot more mid range jumpers he would be automatic
Crazy I've been on youtube long enough to see ancient videos recreated by the new generation of youtubers. So interesting
That’s pretty crazy I have noticed this about Steph for awhile but haven’t been doing CZcams breakdowns for that long crazy that others before me have done similar
@Nonstop Basketball yea man but you did it equally as well if not better. Well educated in the sport
Shot at/around 2:24-230. His right foot is actually behind his left foot when catching the ball. He then moved his right foot slightly in front of the left foot.... Smh.... Exactly the reason I watch A METRIC SHIT TON OF NBA, but only subbed to a few channels. They get things wrong/twisted
The different mechanics are the reason NOT to learn shooting form from Steph. Klays shot is the one to learn.
I stopped as soon as u said James harden has a one motion shot. Are u serious?
He also repeated the same things for about 4 minutes, and focused way too much on post release footwork.
3 finger flick
He is the best 3-point shooter of all time. There are guys like Jordan and Kawhi who were/are practically automatic from mid range. Jordan's fade, in particular, was unguardable. That's why Kobe adopted it.
Not it’s not he’s shooting form because JR smith has the best shooting form in all of basketball hips, puts he’s hip towards the basket and he’s jumps perfectly with he’s release the reason curry is so good is because he has big hands for hes size for example kawhi, MJ all have big hands for they’re size and they’re amazing shooters
7:10 jordan poole 😅 but seriously steph is the greatest shooter he's also the fastest
He has 1 motion shot every has two
Steph shoots like he's playing a golf shot
Short shooters shoot from their shorts.
3:54 is a travel lol

Carmelo Anthony has the perfect shooting form, no cap….
Any shot but a clutch one 😂
Coaches call that shot a heeve. Shooting from the chest.
He must be so annoying to guard 😂
one motion vs two motion shooting is a lie. The ball always has to change directions in your shot, which will cause the shot to stop. Some players slow down more than others, but they all have to change the direction of the ball at some point.
yes but 2 motion shooters have a very noticeable pause
@@hinokami2913 no such thing as two motion. everyone will have different timing. steph curry and trae young start their release while they are still on the ground. someone like ray allen who you people would call a two motion shooter just has different timing. instead of starting his release on the ground he starts it in the air while he is still going up so he still has power. Some people will also say jokic has a two motion shot because he brings the ball up while going down, but the pause in his shot is much shorter because he starts his release on the ground, does this mean that he is actually a "one motion shooter"?. a jump shot is literally two motions, bring the ball up to the set point and then towards the basket. unless you are catching the ball in your set point and then shooting, it wont be a one motion shot.
what one motion shot is the energy transfer the both players you mentioned are classified as two motion shoots because of their energy transfer and the reason is because of their high set point, and ur right the timing is different but that litearly what changes a jumpshot one motions shooters have the perfect energy transfer and motion while two motion shooters timing is off which results in less power its about the transfer of momentum and energy @@freddiebensonstan7037
one motion shooters shoot on the way up,two motion shoooters shoot down or at the apex of their jumpshot which is what ray allen does therefore he is a two motion shotters @@freddiebensonstan7037
also yes ever shot is bring the ball up then release that is true but the pause on how you do it one motions shooters the ball is still going up when their shooting two motions shooters bring the ball up then pause then shoot every motion is classified on how big of a pause there is, thats why there is 1 motion,1.5 and two motions shooters@@freddiebensonstan7037
And yet, Curry base ins't the best for 2k. Smh
3:55 travel
Its called spending thousands upon thousands of hours on your game.
his form doesn't matter, I mean if people try to do the same. It won't be the same. This is just his practice and learn the timing distance and how much power you need when you shoot, pretty much accuracy so all your explanation is pretty much just a theory. Everyone can shoot what they're comfortable with.
Form matters, that's why there are bad and good shooters.
@@Nat-ih9oe There are plenty of reasons for shooting differences. Form matters but isn't the only thing (and might not even be the most important). Reps, eye-sight, consistency, strength, etc. The top 5 shooters off all time all have different form. Curry's form is actually highly inconsistent (as shown).
So where does consistency come from if not from consistently executed form? Of course it needs reps to have consistency in your shot but it's the form that sets the foundation on which you repeat consistently. Of course the other things you mention are important as well, but I'd make the argument that »good« form matters most and is the most difficult to achieve. There's a straight path to strength (work out) and to reps (just do your reps) and there's the given element of eye-sight. So what's left to work on is form. And »good« form means simple, uncluttered, efficient and easily repeatable form so that you can execute it in the most difficult situations as quickly as possible (as Curry obviously does). This is not an easy thing to achieve because you need to figure out what works best with »your« body without giving up on simplicity and energy efficiency and then you will have to rep your body into executing this form consistently every time. You don't have to rep your feeling for distance that much as you're training it implicitly with every shot you take. Consciously changing and applying better form had a far greater impact on my shooting consistency (and also range!) than just getting tons of reps in (which I did before). My feeling for distance is pretty accurate. It doesn't need any attention. But it's the little details in how I bring the ball up, how balanced I am and whether I properly sequence my shooting motion (and whether I do it consistently every time) which decide on the ball going in or not.
@@otocyon2431 I don’t think anyone’s gonna read that. Sorry you wasted your time💀
@@TheOfficalPaper Oh don't worry. I'm fine. When I was at a point where I was watching Curry videos to figure out on what I could improve with my shooting I did read such long comments and someone dropping »sequence« back then would have given me a nod in the direction I needed. But very sweet of you taking your time letting me know.
im a huge lebron fan curry maybe is the best 3pt shooter ever but the best shot creator is Kobe. Curry never do fades or though shots like kobe
