What Happened to Ricky Rubio? [HEARTBREAKING]

- Ricky Rubio has announced he is stepping away from basketball at just 32 years old. His NBA career is likely over because the Spaniard previously said he’d play in Europe when his son goes to school. But what happened to make Rubio call it quits and cite mental health as a factor?
- Sport
I'm from Spain, so I can tell you what happened to him: two terrible injuries and his grandma and mom's death in a short period of time. No wonder he has mental issues, it's a miracle he didn't go insane. Te queremos, Ricky, recupérate pronto (we love you, Ricky, get well soon)
its clear mj is the goat i lost all my respect for kobe hes terrible for injuring ricky
@@frozenplays2708dafuq did MJ got to do with this?
Flip Saunders also passing was hard on him too.
Amen hermano
Is Spain a building?
One thing I think gets lost in all of this:
He was a professional from 14 years old all the way to 32. That’s almost 20 years. Nearly two whole decades of sacrifices, holding back at screaming fans or social media clickbait, having your every move viewed and scrutinized by the public, etc. before even being considered middle-aged.
I really hope Rubio finds peace now and can live his life.
For millions of dollars. Sign me up !
He's 32 but yeah
@@zureaimoney isn’t everything
Same problem with child stars in Hollywood or the music industry. I pity these kids. They have all the money in the world but does not have genuine happiness.
Also got drafted to the timberwolves, basketball hell if I’ve ever seen it
Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health.
And they coincide too! If ones off the other will be too

I used to dismiss people who cry for help because of mental health issues thinking that's just being soft. Until i experienced it myself.
@joseph1145 hahaha good you deserve it. Hope you're good though
As a Utah Jazz fan I will never forget Ricky and what he brought to the team he gave us hope in those playoff moments and helped us win in the playoffs against OKC something Donovan and Rudy couldn't do after he left he was a lot more important to the core than anyone ever thought.
I was at the Thunder vs Jazz playoff game where the crowd chanted "RUBIO" at the end of the second half. Dude took it to Westbrook and made him pay. It was so beautiful to see. Always a Ricky fan
@@darylhenry9595what? Other than game 3 he didnt do jack in that series lol
@@RenzaissanceTVHUH?? He was the Jazzs second best player. Drawing 4 fouls on Westbrook after Westbrook said he was gonna “shut that sh*t down” in game 4. Orchestrated the offense setting up shooters and locking down Westbrook? Yes he was special. If he doesn’t get injured the Houston series is more competitive.
i still think the jazz would have reached west finals had ricky been helthy
I was there too! Such a great game! Ricky is my favorite Jazzman!
You forgot to mention that in 2019 he led Spain to a World Championship and was the MVP of the tournament. I will never forget watching him as a 17 year-old in the Olympic finals against Kobe and the USA. So impressed. I loved watching him as a rookie throwing alley oops in Minesota. He had a very successful career. Just like Derrick Rose, we all know how injuries can limit a player, that´s sad, but he accomplished much more than most players. Being a start in the NBA for many years is already an extremely difficult achievement.
Rubio in that OKC series. Man. I was at that game with the 26 point triple double. He was electric. The most hyped I have ever seen a Jazz home crowd since the Finals against MJ.
He's an incredible person, and deserves happiness.
He's not better than Russ but that series showed us why some playstyles are significantly more impactful
@@dumbassdude8372Rubio literally had 1 good game, he was ass the whole series
@@dumbassdude8372who cares if westbrick is better. He opened his mouth to talk shit about Ricky, he payed with a 26 points triple double his face. That was one of the best instant karma moments.
The most impressive thing about Ricky was him maintaining a positive plus minus on that 16-66 Minnesota team as a starter playing 30mins. Dude played 70+ games as well. To be a winning player on an all time bad team was mind boggling to me, and one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen. I watched every game. Watching Minnesota blow 20 point leads as soon as he sat on the bench. Watching him and Bazz beat the 73 win warrior team AT gs. Like what the hell. He deserved more respect around the league
At one point they were also above .500 then his first ACL tear happened
@neilbryanbucsit197 Many of those Minnesota teams with Kevin love and Ricky finished above 500. The west was just brutal. At one point a 50 win sun's team didn't make the playoffs. Like sheesh.
Fax that 2014 Minnie team was technically a 48 win team according to net rating, but the west was brutal@@noliferetiree1354

He’s still playing but for FC Barcelona
Ricky was traded to Utah, and the team improved so much, then was traded to Suns and the team improved a lot, then was traded to the Cavs and the team improved big time. He's the ultimate teammate and chemistry maker, either Donovan Mitchell and Dev Booker praise him all the time (remember, he was substituted by Conley and Chris Paul in Utah and Phoenix, not scrubs). No player has more assists and steals in less minutes played in NBA HISTORY. He had two ACLs when he was playing great and was MVP of the last world Championship. To me, he's been up to the hype in the limited minutes he has played
Ricky used to come visit our patients consistently at Huntsman Cancer Hospital. He was amazing!
Nothing but love for Rubio. He taught me to love the game in every facet. I wasn't athletic like D Rose, not built like Bron, could never shoot like Curry but I always tried to be good at the little things and see the floor on both the sides of the court and make my team better. Watching Rubio allowed me to see the game in a way I couldn't before. He's always been a positive guy and no drama. Depression just isn't something you can prepare for and it just never goes away. I wish him the best in life.
Ricky will always be a legend in Spain ❤
People don't realize dude started playing pro basketball towards the end of 14 years old. Dude has played a whole ass 15 years career even before the age of 30. Always has been a class act. It's a shame he didn't live up to the hype but he's always been a quality player. He may not be the superstar some of us expected but anyone who thinks he don't play winning basketball just doesn't watch he play enough. I hope he comes back and is given an opportunity on a winning team, he IS a good player and will contribute winning basketball.
@@MrLycan1995 He need to leave the nba and comeback to Spain, everyone will show him love and respect!
And in Europe/ rest of the World, too.

Love your recent content. Sometimes we get so caught up in excitement of the NBA, we forget these elite performers have personalities and struggles.
Thank you so much for making this video! Rubio has always been one of my favourite players!
Please keep making this type of stories. Basketball is fun, but there are things that are way bigger than basketball. Thank you for sharing these stories.

Wow.
Really good content! Your dilivery and engagement is super on point 😊
I read a lot about Ricky this days, but this is the best video/info of all. Good job, very complete
Cassey, an important note: the first team of Ricky was not named DKV, but Joventut de Badalona (DKV is tye sponsor).
As a spaniard, Ricky for any of us was a model of what a goid player and person, especially his moments with the Gasols, Calderón and Ibaka. And this year it sermed interesting dur to tye WC as Lorenzo Brown is out, it seemed that he wouid be the bew leader...but anyways, we dessire tye BEST to him and his family.
Gotcha - thanks for the correction!

it's more heroic to be a good person than a great point guard. Thank you Ricky
he's still quite good though
Hey A.M. hoops keep up the excellent work! I really like these story-telling videos!
Terrific video production! And regarding Rubio... it's a shame injuries sometimes mess up players' carriers 😑
Rubio was very important for the Suns too... he helped to change our culture and the bubble run was amazing! Unfortunally, Phoenix trade him in a dirty way, so it adds up to the struggles of his mental health :/
Thank you for making this, Rubio is my all time favorite player
I'm spaniard and they were talking abou him like crazy here since he was 15-16. That can break anyone
Great video. Always loved his game hope to see him a few more seasons.
Losing a loved one will absolutely change your life & mind forever. Prayers for him & wish him all the best.
Overall hes been a good player, having good contracts and some great performances. He's won team and individual titles with Spain and he was Westbrook's daddy during that OKC-Jazz series. Its not his fault that he got hyped and severely injured his rookie year. I hope he finds happiness as a retired player
Great content casey. Been following Rubio since he’s 17 and no matter how wild the ride has been, im glad he’ll have more time with his family.
Props to Ricky, he's a good man. I hate that the NBA can be this toxic.
As a Jazz fan, we loved him here and he loved Utah. Then the front office told him they would be moving on from him. Have only wished the best for him ever since. Hope he takes care of himself and comes back soon for another run.
Another run for utah
Here from Spain we aprecciate the work, great video as always
It's really sad to see how his career went. Also to see how his life went. Being hyped up from 14 years old. Being top prospect. Getting drafted in poor conditions. Getting injured multiple times. Losing his mom while not being there because of his job.
I hope he finds himself back again living his life with his family.
He was a great player. Wish him the best.
Finally someone appreciate my NBA idol, he's the reason why I started watching NBA, his passing skills was the thing I was looking forward to every game, he was my steve nash, when I first saw his flashy passes back in 2013, I was so amazed, it was first time seeing such passes because that time, I didn't know such playstyle exist, heck I didn't know a thing about bball back then but I know his passes is awesome, I later learn about steve nash, rondo, kidd, white chocolate & other great passers but he was the reason why I even started watching NBA, he was the reason why I pick up the ball, I even buy his addidas shoes then when he visited our country, I was so hype but couldn't attend because I had classes that time. He will always be my No. 1 Idol in NBA.
Me too
Sad, didn’t know this about him, hope he gets the mental help he needs, and comes back better than ever
The reason he didn't join Minny right after the draft was simply that he had a hefty buyout clause with Joventut, and paying it out of his own pocket would mean basically playing for free his first 2 seasons there. This was well known and that's why they chose another PG at 5. They just screwed it up choosing the wrong one.
And BTW, his first season in Barcelona was pretty good, it was in his second year when the coach decided to change the way they played and Ricky struggled to adjust.
Nice work 🎆✨
Great job with this story!
Loving all these stories
I distinctly remember seeing Rubio get drafted by my Wolves, and being at the Target Center during a pre-season game getting so excited when he was to enter the court as a Wolves player for the first time. We were all chanting "Spaniard!" and it was great to see. That first season he was electric and it was a shame it was cut short during that Lakers game.
I agree with the poster who said he's been playing for 20 years already. He has had a long career, and a lot of stress and heartbreak. If he wants to hang it up, good for him. I'm glad I got to see him play in the NBA and in international play for as long as I did.
Pretty good summary of Rubio's career, but I wish you mentioned more about his role as a mentor & teacher, especially to Mitchell and Booker.
His shot was never great, but he excelled at pretty much everything else. A lot of us in Minnesota still love him even though we never went anywhere with him starting at PG.
Ricky is gonna be one of those talents that you wish blossomed to all those projections, but still appreciate what he was for who he is. Sucks to see it came down to this, but all the best Ricky. Hope this man finds the peace’s he’s looking for and lives a fulfilling life with his family. Bigger than basketball. ✊🏾
The Fam will always be number1️⃣ over everything no matter what. Good for Ricky man. Hope he has a good rest of his life.
He's a fighter, always been, but sometimes you're fighting for no reason. He has made a good decision focusing on his son and wife, I'm sure he'll be a great father and family man. Thank your visibilizing his story.
Guys, let's just not say that Kings passed on him = NBA scouts passed on him. Kings is notorious in passing star prospects. Kings itself was the graveyard for rookies for a long time. It's a blessing Rubio did not go there. But Timberwolves 😩😩. Imagine if he is in the Warriors and teams with lots of spacing. How good would he have been!
Smol guard who cant shhot and lacks aggression. He did the best he could have.
Man the fact that Kings GM decided that Rubio won't be picked by them just because his mom cut the steak for him has proved to me how r@cist America is, just think about it he passed on Rubio not becoz he lacked skill but due to his mom caring for her son, for the GM it proved the long held r@cist stereotype Americans hold for Europeans that they are 'soft', Americans think that staying away from family after hitting eighteen is being p*ssy, god should punish America for its r@cism man they also ruined the career of Jeremy Lin just because he didn't look like a baller, man this is crazy
Great video I just wanna say that you called DKV to the Juventut de Badalona which is how it's usually refered as
I worked with Rubio in MN. He was always a kind soul.
A good overview of Ricky's NBA career, but you should have mentioned the great achievements he got in parallel with the Spanish national team, especially the FIBA World Cup MVP in 2019.
I miss ricky
I really wish I could see him live in my country during fiba world cup but I respect his decision
luckily I haven't bought the tickets so I didn't lose any money
I'm from Spain and I'm proud of Ricky. He is an awesome person and an incredibly fun basketball player to watch
Another great vid Casey. Would love to see you talk about the recent Knicks-Raptors corporate espionage lawsuit though. Don't feel it's getting the attention it deserves and it could DESTROY the Raptors if the Knicks' claims are true (namely that there was intent to steal and share confidential files). Based on previous cases like this in the MLB, Masai Ujiri, Bobby Webster, Darko Rajaković, and more could all be getting fired and blacklisted from the NBA, while the Raptors could lose multiple first round picks given the Timberwolves lost FIVE for just an illegal contract, not breaking US federal law.
Man I’m gonna miss Ricky Rubio so much :( truly disappointing what happened to him and his career
Hi am love your content
Good for Rubio. I'm sure he's earned enough money from the NBA. In this life, family is and will always be the most important thing that matters.

The last few teams he olayed for he helped them get better then they traded him away. Its crazy
@@serbonkers4130 true, but the last trade from cleveland to Indiana was different, he was injured for the year and then resigned him. Pity, It was interesting to see a rotation with Mitchell, Garland and Rubio
That's crazy. Ricky Rubio is my favorite player and will always be my favorite player🙏🫶
Respect to Rubio... Family over EVERYTHING ❤❤❤❤
Rubio reminds me a bit of those child actors who were always in the spotlight. A lot of them had to live under a lot of expectations at a very young age. Sometimes it worked out and sometimes it took its toll pysically and mentally.
Hope he finds true joy and happiness 🙏🏼
Good for him. Not many human accomplish so much in an entire lifetime, let alone by the age of 32! Buena suerte Ricky! Basketball will always be there for you.
Ricky earned 126 mil - sounds like aGREAT retirement 😂
The sincerity in this mans eyes !🙏🏽
Amazing mentor to Darius and he really helped to cultivate the high performance culture the Cavs have today.
As a Cavs fan, I wanted him long before we actually got him. I was sad to see him traded after getting injured and then was ecstatic to find out he was back the next year! It’s going to suck not seeing him out there but his health and happiness is above all else and I wish him the very best!! ❤
I can't with this thumbnail dead bro 😂😂😂😂
I'm Serbian, and as for floor general fame, Rubio is up there with the best point-guards (we say playmakers in Europe) of all time. The best comparison would be Jason Kid, but unfortunately due to injuries, he couldn't leave that kind of impact in the league.
He was one of the guys that elevated every team he was on, you know those type of players, when they sit on the bench, the playing 5 simply falls apart in every way. He comes in - oh, everything's functioning now.
I always thought that his bad FG% was a miniscule price to pay for everything else he brings to the team.
Anyways, I wish him all the best in his future.
I can feel Ricky. Something you love the most goes against you. You try the best but you don't succeed. You sacrifice too much but you leave someone you love behind. It sucks. Life is not fair. Luck does play a huge part for everyone's sucess. Hard work only gives you a ticket to compete but luck is the key to suceed in the end.
Well said.
Much respect to Rubio. He would be an awesome PG off the bench of the 76ers especially if they lose harden. They would need a experience playmaker without a doubt. heal up toward peace Ricky 👍
Ricky Rubio was the MVP of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019, where he won the gold with Spain. But even before that he had proven to be one the most talented and unique players on earth. Some of us prefer enjoying his magical assists than reading stats. How many players can do those no-one-expected-that blind assists in the toughest basketball league of the planet?, even in his first year! He is exceptional, his passes are beautiful, like an art form. Those extraordinary moves stick in my mind forever more that figures, digits, amounts or percentages. Creative guy, imaginative, clever, artistic, original, innovative... and a good person with a positive message: there are no stats for all these things, but they are much more relevant.
i still remember when he had that great game agaisnt the knicks, feels like that was so long ago
I remember that 😂 everyone dropping career highs against the Knicks
I do imagine how tough to be over-expected, loss of his mom and such. But I hope he can understand how also he is privileged to have the physical and chance to improve his skill on the world too level league. Sorry for him tho, want him to not forget most of can’t even have luxury he has.
Was a huge Rubio fan when he played for the Jazz.
I hope he can find peace. His mother would be proud of him and his legendary career. Generational talent.
demarcus cousin is the most heartbreaking case, he should have been the greatest player to ever play the game. he in his prime was dominant like shaq in the paint, had the footwork of kareem, and he could ring threes long before jokic came to the league. without injuries easily the greatest and most domaninant player ever, the biggest "what if". can you do a video on him?
Ricky legend, great basketball player despite everything and a great human being
Thanks
He is my very first favourite player❤❤
Ricky started playing pro at 14, he played the olimpic final at 17, at 19 he had already won the ACB and the Euroleague. After his injury he was at the top of his game in 2019, dominating the WC, only to be traded and traded again in the NBA. In Spain we learned that Cleveland wanted Ricky to play in the WC and come back in top shape to the NBA, but at 32 he just declined. He just needs a break and enjoy basketball again. We will hopefully see him playing in Europe soon.
This is going in my Favorites folder.
3:00 very well explained and very true. Here in Europe usually the team is more important than the players although there are exceptions.
Loved Rubio throughout his career. Wish you happiness
Favorite player of all time 🐺
I saw the match Spain vs USA Rubio balled like a champ in that game trully an inspiration
Love Ricky. I credit him to helping the suns start to get out of that 10 years of suckiness
Disrespect not mentioning Lauri being amazing teammate to play with Rubio as both knew European style of bball. Garland and Mobley really didn't benefit from Rubio in that Cavs year more than Love & Markkanen did having Rubio play with them. Rubio I think would have enjoyed being in Spanish league more than NBA, maybe bad mistake to leave his home country. USA culture of bball doesn't fit for all. Still all the best for Ricky, I always enjoyed his game in any team he was with.
I agree with a lot of what you said, however, I think garland definitely benefited and learned how to play more off the ball with rubio
@@zachnantz5304Well I didn't mean that Garland didn't benefit, I was tiredly talking which players on the floor benefitted when Rubio played that year.

The fact the Timberwolves past on S.Curry not once but Twice is insane. Glad Curry got drafted by GS because MN will definitely ruined his career
This made me so sad for Ricky 😭😭
Important note: He hasnt said he is retired, he said he wants to take a break from basketball and that he doesnt know how long it will take him to return. My guess is that he will return in a few years, but he will play in some Liga ACB team (either Joventut or Barcelona)
Return in a few years? He's already 32 lol
